Wait for a Smaller Notch

Wait for a Smaller Notch

If you buy a flagship iPhone right now, it will have a notch.

Apple's infamous notch houses important sensors, but it has also drawn the ire of many smartphone users due to its intrusiveness.

Fortunately, Apple is reportedly looking to slim down, and/or eliminate, the notch on future iPhone models.

Apple is reportedly exploring ways to combine Face ID and the front-facing camera a move that could reduce the size of the notch.

Last year Apple supplier AMS revealed new sensor technology that could help the company deliver a smaller notch on upcoming iPhones.

“Smartphone OEMs today are striving to maximize their products’ screen-to-body ratio, reducing the bezel area as much as possible on the display’s face,” said David Moon, Senior Marketing Manager at ams. “The TCS3701 enables phone designers to take this trend to a new level, potentially eliminating the bezel entirely."

A report from Mac Otakara suggests the iPhone 13 will have a narrower TrueDepth camera which means we could see a thinner notch.

The site has also leaked an alleged iPhone 13 Pro mockup that depicts a smaller notch with a repositioned front camera/earpiece.

Leaker Ice Universe claims that the iPhone 13 will still have a notch, but that it will be shorter than the one found on previous models.

Ming-Chi Kuo believes the iPhone 13 series will have a smaller notch. So does Barclays analyst Andrew Gardiner. So does Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Hit-or-miss Digitimes also believes the iPhone 13 series will have a smaller notch. The publication says the company's "new design integrates Rx, Tx and flood illuminator into the same camera module" which will help it shrink the notch.

A leak from DuanRui on Twitter, which depicts supposed iPhone 13 screen protectors, shows us what the smaller notch could look like. If these are accurate, the notch on the iPhone 13 could be around 30% smaller than notches on previous iPhones.

DuanRui has also shared alleged iPhone 13 dummy units and these showcase a slightly smaller notch on the iPhone 13 series.

It's worth mentioning that a notch-less device spotted in the popular television show Ted Lasso isn't the iPhone 13. All signs point to a notch being on board Apple's new batch of iPhones.

You'll have to deal with a notch this year, but if you'd prefer a smaller notch, you'll want to wait for the iPhone 13.
