5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Jailbreak Your iPhone 4S

Published

on

The iPhone 4S jailbreak is on the way, and while many of us are excited about the ability to customize and do more with the iPhone 4S, there are a number of reasons you shouldn’t jailbreak your new iPhone.

Jailbreaking refers to unlocking areas of your iPhone that Apple has locked down, so that you can customize the experience, install applications that the company hasn’t allowed into the App Store and more.

(Read: How to Jailbreak the iPhone 4S)

For many users, an Phone 4S jailbreak will deliver the iPhone experience they have been looking for, but jailbreaking isn’t for everyone.

Before you jailbreak your new iPhone 4S, be sure that you read the following warnings first. I’m not trying to talk you out of jailbreaking your iPhone, just giving you a heads up on what can happen if you do.

You’ll Void Your Warranty

iPhone 4S jailbreakIf you jailbreak your iPhone 4S, you will void your warranty. While the jailbreaking process was ruled legal in 2010, Apple was very clear that doing so voids your warranty. This means that you could potentially lose out on a warranty fix for an unrelated issue because your iPhone is jailbroken.

Many times you can restore to a standard Apple iOS version before going in for repair, but not always.

You’ll Lose Genius Bar Support

If you are a user that needs and loves Genius bar support for your iPhone, you probably shouldn’t jailbreak your iPhone 4S. In the past some users have been able to get support by not mentioning that their iPhone is jailbroken, but again, if the Genius finds out that it is jailbroken, you may lost out on support.

Again, you can un-jailbreak, but this is a an annoying process if you need help on a regular basis.

No More Fast Upgrades to New Releases

One of the more tangible reasons to avoid the iPhone 4S jailbreak is that you’ll need to wait for the Jailbreak development community to create a new jailbreak or patch before you can upgrade. If you are waiting for the jailbreak, you should also avoid installing iOS 5.0.1 to your iPhone 4S.

This isn’t as big of an issue for small upgrades like this, and in the case of 5.0.1, a jailbreak was available very quickly. But, when it comes to major upgrades that bring new features, you may be forced to wait a while, or go back to a stock iPhone experience.

No More Seamless Experience

If you are a fan of the iPhone experience, and don’t want to chance a buggy or slow iPhone, you may want to pass on jailbreaking. Apple has many controls in place to keep apps from slowing down your iPhone, but jailbroken apps don’t need to stick to these guidelines.

Many users who have gone back from jailbreaking cite a poor user experience and buggy nature of their jailbroken iPhones as a reason for going back to normal. If you know exactly what you are doing, or don’t mind troubleshooting to find out what is causing an issue, you will be OK, but many iPhone owners I know don’t want to hassle with things like this.

Some apps will also not work on jailbroken devices. So far this has been limited to streaming apps like TW Cable on the iPad and the occasional app, but it is worth noting.

Security

Finally, consider the security risks. If you have a jailbroken iPhone and are installing apps from various sources, one of them could contain malware. The threat of malware has caused concern for Android users, and so far we haven’t seen a large number of malware infested jailbreak apps, but the threat remains. If you do jailbreak, be vigilant about what you download.

Should You Jailbreak Your iPhone 4S?

iPhone 4S Jailbreak wishlistI’m not here to tell you not to jailbreak your iPhone 4S or iPhone 4. I’m excited about the iPhone 4S jailbreak release, so I can fix many of my concerns from switching from Android. There are a number of our staff here who won’t jailbreak their devices for many of the reasons listed above.

Ultimately, jailbreaking your new iPhone 4S is up to you. If you know what you are doing, you can follow these instructions to jailbreak your iPhone 4, and stay tuned for how to jailbreak the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 as soon as the tools are available.

In most cases, you won’t have to worry about bricking your iPhone when you jailbreak, but it is always a remote possibility. Baring any major issues, you can try out a jailbreak and go back to your normal iPhone experience without much hassle.

Nothing bad except STEALING the hard work of developers. I don’t see how Apple hasn’t updated ITunes to check for Jailbkreak and prevent sync or updates. But I would assume its coming.

Frank, what do you mean by “stealing the hard work of developers?” You sound like one of the millions of clueless Apple drones that, for some reason, assume that jailbreaking = pirating apps. Get a clue!

          • Lance

            01/19/2013 at 11:09 pm

their is a difference between stealing and pirating, if i stole your car i would have it and you would not, however if i copyed your car you would have it and so would i, piracy dosen’t deprive the “victim” of their property… and i really don’t like paying for an app when apple is going to take more than 20% of the poor developer’s money. besides appstore apps suck i only use Cydia app’s. if you don’t want your money “stolen” don’t develop apps.

Stupid article, you can achieve greater security through many of the different jailbroken apps. From locking your folders to apps that hide info, sure don’t install the blinking eye tree wall paper that eats up memory and battery. Lame article. Hilarious after posts, love all of you

Very interesting post but, in my, opinion it’s not complete, some facts are no all that right.

Been a Jailbreaker since iPhone 1 and never had a buggy experience or had serious troubles, most of the jailbreakers that go back to stock it’s because the have no idea what they are doing.

Both, the Warranty and Support can be achieved by a single restore and iTunes (or, in any case some cydia apps) make this process really simple.

One again, nice post, but you should see and talk with both sides of the coins before this kind of posts IMHO.

      I do share why I am excited about a jailbreak. – https://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/10/20/5-reasons-i-want-an-iphone-4s-jailbreak-now/

This is aimed at the users you mention who may not know what they are doing. I don’t recommend jailbreaking to many family and friends b/c they fall into that group.

      • the other halph

        11/14/2011 at 2:10 pm

If you are going to make a post about this you should at least add valid facts to it. Apple claims you lose your warranty but if you need suppose you can just restore. If your unable to restore its probly because your ipod wont boot up in which case apple can’t tell if it is jailbroken. The same thing goes for genius.

If you jailbreak the you normally dont want the new upgrades. Most of the time if you are jailbroken, then the upgrades being sent out you already have. And if not, then the jailbroken functionality is normally preferred to the updates.

I, along with many friends have had jailbroken iphones and ipods and have never had them slow down or stop working.

and security is only an issue if your doing things which are illegal.

so much BS lol, i brought in many of jailbroken iphones and apple has replaced them everytime, its the 3gs if u alter baseband then u void warrenty. you can over clock you ios to do things apple couldnt dream of. wish you best of luck on your next story, and as mentioned by another person, make sure all your facts are straight first before fillijng peoples heads with bs, to much of this online now adays

        01/08/2013 at 2:33 pm

How would you list greater security as inherent to a non-jailbroken phone?

Jailbreaking is a process that finds the security loopholes within the factory iOS and uses them to gain permissions to perform functions Apple doesn’t intend to let you have.

After jailbreaking, Apple sees these exploits and tries to close them. Additionally, jailbreak tweaks are issued to close these security leaks PRIOR to iOS getting an upgrade.

As another pointed out, there are tweaks intended purely to increase your knowledge of what your phone is sending out to apps. While passing Apple’s requirements may mean “secure” in your eyes, the information being sent out isn’t typically something you’d need, nor want, being sent out.

Sharing 5 reasons someone might want a jailbreak doesn’t make erroneous reasons true. I’m sorry. Your reply basically said “I’m right, circles are squares because I pointed out that some people like squares over here.”

The only jailbreakers I’ve ever seen go back are the same style he speaks of. They weren’t utilizing the jailbreak tweaks. The functionality was the same for them with, or without, the jailbreak. Security is NOT stronger for factory phones. The warranty is only voided in lip service, not practice. If you’re making frequent trips to the Genius Bar, you shouldn’t be in talks about the jailbreak. Hell, you might as well include “You don’t want to jailbreak your iPhone 4S if in fact you own a Galaxy instead.”

And the worst part, a great deal of features Apple has implemented into iOS come FROM the jailbreak community. Let’s follow simple logic. If the feature is only available in the jailbreak community prior to the update and available to both after the update. Which group is waiting for updates: jailbreakers or factory users?

There are a WEALTH of legitimate reasons NOT to jailbreak.

None of the 5 you listed being to touch the legitimate list.

LOL Finally a spark of intelligence appears on this page. (I think a rib cracked from laughing with the parents comment.)

Apple simply doesn’t want you to jailbreak because the apps you receive and such don’t pay them because you the user that has a “cracked/hacked” iPhone receive it at most: FREE-OF-CHARGE.
Now I’m not particularly fond of the lag from my iPhone 3g but my other 3gs work just fine so long as I don’t multitask TOO much.
Unlocking your iPhone to it’s full capabilities is awesome, but like everything in the world it has it’s risks if you that are easy to fix.

    11/14/2011 at 9:00 am

You do not void your warranty at all. You just need to do a quick restore in iTunes.
Why not do a post on why you should. I bet you could come up with a lot more than 5 reasons, legit reasons as well.

Reasons 1 and 2 are complete BS. You can always restore back to normal.

Reason 3 is somewhat valid. But iOS brings “new” features only once or twice a year. Everything else is bug fixes.

Reason 4, OK, I’ll go with that. Im sure that some people installed some trash on their iphone after jailbreaking it and messed up them up. but I never had this problem, neither did my parents.

Reason 5. LOL. You mean like the “security” that allowed all of iOS to be ripped apart in an instant via a PDF exploit in Safari? The exploit that allowed jailbreakme.com to work. The ironic thing is that for about 2 months, the only way to secure your iPad/iPhone was to jailbreak it via jailbreakme.com, which then went ahead and patched this vulnerability.
Or how about those book apps from a two years back that recorded a users

This is a totally useless post. You can always reverse a jailbreak. Never believe idiots who claim that it voids your warranty… that’s completely false information. Whoever decided to come up with that has their head way too far up their ass and has no clue what he or she is talking about. You can always do a restore if you’re not satisfied, bringing you back to the stock iOS version your device is currently on…..

Come on now idiots… stop writing articles please. Crawl back into your little holes and stop wasting everyone on the internet’s time.

I’m assuming you don’t understand the meaning of ‘bandwidth wastage’, seeing that you wrote some extra garbage to fill up the internet.

Anyway, the only reason that is partly plausible is 3. Yes, you might not be able to upgrade but there are Cydia tweaks that provide new feature.

PS. you contradicted yourself: “I’m not here to tell you not to jailbreak your iPhone 4S or iPhone 4”
Well, why are you writing this junk if you aren’t?

Worst reasons why you shouldn’t jailbreak. Warranty is not voided unless you’re dumb enough to walk into apple and hand them a jailbroken phone lol. 2nd, who gives a flying duck about genius bar. Theres nothing all that special about em. Just do your research lol. Probably the only reason I would say not to jailbreak is, if and only if, youre not tech savy and love the stock shitty phone. Seriously all the new features integrated into iOS 5 are all from jailbreaks! I had all this junk way before hand. All i can say is, Apple you played your cards right. Free ideas from the jailbreak community…touché.

Not a great article at all, actually. There is no way Apple can detect your jailbreak & the only way a genius can see your phone is jailbroken is to see jailbreak apps like cydia on the screen. Put em in a folder or whatever & if you need to exchange the phone, it is really no big deal to restore it.
As far as updates, the devs will release a jailbreak & the updates that immediately follow are to patch security. Bottom line, if I have my phone the way I want it, I can wait for the next big update.
Security is the only valid point in this whole article but it hasn’t proven to be a real problem. You can protect yourself by changing the root password. The article should be titled “Jailbreaks are for big kids only.”

There is really only one point on here that is valid: the loss of seamless experience. All of the other points here can absolutely be avoided by doing a factory restore of your iPhone, or maybe even more than one factory restore if necessary to wipe all traces of past jailbreaking. I’ve taken physically-broken iPod touches of all generations to the Apple Store before and gotten free replacements just by performing factory restores with iTunes to wipe traces of the past jailbreaks.

The one thing that IS keeping me from jailbreaking my iPhone 4S is the lack of seamless experience. I am obsessed with this phone and play with it 24/7. The idea of having to upgrade to newer firmwares, rejailbreak, upgrade, rejailbreak, all the while restoring a lot of data and retweaking a lot of features in apps and in the interface after every update, doesn’t sound like something that necessarily belongs in my dream experience of having an iPhone 4S. For something that I have spent so much money on that I love so much, I am going to enjoy the **** out of it as a device that “just works”. I’ve played incessantly with jailbreaking on my iPad, my iPad 2, and all of my iPod touches, but with the iDevice that I use most regularly I’d love a seamless, Apple-guaranteed experience.

Others may disagree as they please, I COMPLETELY understand the love for tweaking devices like this.
Also – why this article pertains specifically to the iPhone 4S I do not know; after all, these are points that one usually attributes to all of Apple’s iOS lineup of devices.

    That said………….
    Yeah this article is bullshit.

Your only thinking negative, think of the positive side, the apps you can get the full capacity you will have , it’s awesome, without the jailbreak you don’t know what your missing out. For example Tomton from the app store cost about £69 , you can get it free, how about that- that will shut you up

Did anyone actually read any posts by the author or did you all just read the title and decide its time to be assholes? He clearly says over and over that this was intended for people that know nothing about jailbreaking. NOT the people that have been doing it forever or that really look into it. Its meant for the kind of people that hear “jailbreaking is awesome” and are ready to do it. So before you tell someone that they don’t know what they’re talking about or they’re an idiot try reading the damn article first. Also, to the the 100 people that said “YOU CAN REVERSE JAILBREAKING FOR 1 AND 2!!!!” he says jailbreaking is reversible at the end, GJ.

You guys, it (hint) can slow your iPod or iPhone down. My friend had to buy a new iPod because his froze so bad while he was swiping pages. I had a jail broke iPod touch 4G, but it got stolen. I got an iPhone 4 shortly after, and I am debating wether I want to jail brake it or not. The message of this post is just think before you leap, you know?

Sad, this article is not researched at all!  I’ve taken 3 jailbroken and unlocked phones to 3 different Apple Stores (all in California, LA, Walnut Creek and Sacramento) and no warranties were voided, and the genuis bar served us just fine!  As long as you either restore them, or they do, nothing really changes.  Seemless … not seeing issues here.  All apps, especially the jb ones, work great!  I like my phone looking differently than the ordinary boring iPhone looks … so this Jailbreaking, is just the answer to making my ordinary phone, fabulous!

You don’t jailbreak an iPhone for free apps, you do it for customization and apps that apple will not allow. For instance I do not like having to scroll through screens of apps so I have a calendar set on my home screen (thanks lockinfo) with my 4 top apps and my dock hosts 5 apps or folders per scroll. Then when I want to find anything it’s all in my dock and I always can see my calendar no matter where I scroll.

Those of you who have added your comments seem to be a smart and savvy lot, so help me with 2 simple questions to which I’ve yet to find a clear answer. First, the background. My wife has a new iPhone 4s … and a 2 year contract to go with it. I’ve encouraged her to jailbreak/unlock it since she’s traveling to Germany for a month. She could just get a local prepaid micro-SIM while she’s over there so that she can use it while out and about.

Question 1: Can you only jailbreak/unlock phones that are NOT under contract?
Question 2: If we keep using the current SIM card in the States, does AT&T even know, or do we just keep getting our normal monthly bill?

    Thx much.

no offense, but I think most of the above reasons are wack.
    1. Yes you’ll void your warranty, but there’s something called “Restore” that gets rid of all the evidence of jailbreak without apple knowing you ever did. I’ve tried it myself and they fixed my screen before my warranty expired.
    2. Be honest, how many people actually use Genius often.
    3. Most of the updates are useless anyway. If for any big updates like the ios5, just simply upgrade your iOS and lose jailbreak for. couple of weeks until the new jailbreak comes out, YOU LOSE NOTHING.
    4. Jailbreak will not slow down your iPhone/iPod/ipad, UNLESS you mass download tweaks other than apps. Doenloading apps for. jailbreak has the same effect as when you purchase it from app store.

5.1.1 is the only iOS you can jailbreak at the moment, so you’re in luck. Google search “absinthe” and download it for Mac/Win/Linux, whichever you have. Backup contacts/music/photos/videos/apps on computer, restore iPhone, and then use absinthe. hope this helps!

I jailbroke my iPhone4 Sunday, no issues with battery so far. Installed Installous. Can intall apps via Installous, also via repos such as BigBoss, HackYouriPhone, etc. If you update iPhone to iOS 5.1.1 and use Absinthe 2.0.4, you should have no issues.

    06/24/2012 at 8:32 am

Half of that is total BS. I have had a jailbroken phone for a long time and have never had issues. Jailbreaks are stable and, if you know how, easy to use. It offers more features, support, apps, and so much more.
You mention that with the jailbreak, you lose the ability to quickly upgrade your device. This is bull. Tethered jailbreaks (for the last six iOS’s) have been released less that 14 hours after the iOS. Upgrade and rejailbreak within a day. Yes, there is some delay, especially when waiting for an untethered, but this should not be a deterrent from something as great as the jailbreak.

I took a jailbroken iPhone 4s into an apple store yesterday because I kept having sim card issues. The guy asked if had those issues without the jailbreak software. I told him yes. He scheduled an appt for me and I told him I thought jailbreaking voids you warranty. He said no apple just wants to make sure your issue isn’t from the jailbreak software, and to restore it before returning the phone. Today the replaced my phone with y warranty knowing it was jailbroken!…

How much did apple pay you to write that article?
1.)I have had my iPhone 1st gen through 4 jailbroken and never had any issues.
2.) If I did have issues I would restore my phone then take it to genius bar.
    3.) Void Warranty? See #2
    4.) Upgrades? See #2
5.) Security? Don’t be an idiot when you download.

Please don’t write articles about things you know nothing about.

  60. Irix

    07/17/2012 at 6:59 pm

Is this a joke? All of these reasons are bogus.

    1. ‘Warranty’, there’s no way to tell if a device is jailbroken. You restore, and it’s back to factory. No one can tell. So, this isn’t really a reason.

    2. Again, not a reason. Simple backup and restore, and voila. Jailbreaks aren’t difficult. You turn your phone off, hold a button, and hit next. Done.

    3. The jailbreak community is on top of things, and by the time ‘final’ iOS versions are released, they’re already jailbroken. So, reason debunked.

    4. Seamless experience? Jailbreaking allows full control of your system, including all of the garbage left over from previous iOS versions, as well as garbage from other iOS versions that your device does not use. For example, on an iPhone, you don’t need iPad specific files. You can also gain full control over RAM, and control the clock speeds of your device. The iOS SDK has nothing about how well an app manages memory or CPU, it’s up to the developer. So again, useless excuse.

    5. Unless you’re an imbecile who sticks their nose where it doesn’t belong, security isn’t a big thing. You only install what you need, just as you would from the App Store.

If anyone has a jailbroken phone, and wants to see how fast your phone is without the jailbreak, put it into safe mode (go to sbsettings, click power, and click safe mode). I just did it with mine, and it is incredibly fast, I’m considering removing my jailbreak.

For all of you that happen to be a narcissist and love to insult “inferior people” to feel better about yourselves, find a new way of living… This gentleman is absolutely 100% correct. I used to work at the Genius bar and YES jailbreaking DOES void your warranty. Now if you are able to restore then yes there is no way of knowing if the warranty was voided or not. You will not always be able to restore a jailbroken device, and when that happens you are terribly out of luck. How does this happen? Well when you have seen thousands and thousands of jailbreaks you see several hundred examples of things going wrong. I have seen them all. For example a dock connector stops working correctly while the phone is jailbroken. How do you restore that? Or the buttons stop working, screen freezes, and so on. The Genii are instructed to help you restore the device, and if that works help you out. If it doesn’t work and they know it’s jailbroken they can deny your warranty. When you jailbreak and flash firmware ANYTHING is possible and you can ruin the device with no chance of return. I personally have seen that many times. When you say NOTHING can go wrong you are leading people down a path that could cause them harm… you are causing harm. Thank you sir for this wonderful article.

I jail broke my I phone 4 and loved the customization, however a fault developed which was really annoying and I noticed a few other people had the same fault, the fault was when I received a phone call the ringer did not ring but the vibrator worked, after an exhaustive search I could not find a fix so I restored the phone back to normal, I would love to jailbreak again but I think I’ll wait for IOS6 and see what happens,

    thanks for a great article,

Why would you leave android, to go to iphone and jailbreak the iphone to get back some of the Android functionality? That makes absolutely no sense to me. Of course in my opinion the only reason anyone, including you would buy an iphone is because they want to look cool, not because the iphone meets their needs or is better suited for them.
The only person I could see getting an iphone are little kids and the elderly, because it is a stupidly simple phone with no extras, except for being the most. Expensive phone you can buy..

Well those were some crap reasons, if you know what you’re doing Jailbreaking can greatly increase the functionality of your phone, I’ve had an iPhone and I don’t know how people cope without it being jailbroken. ( I have the HTC one X now because it’s even easier to customize along with a bigger screen ). The only reason I see for people not to jailbreak is if they don’t know what they are doing and can’t support themselves in the process, that’s why like somebody else mentioned I never recommend it to family and only a number of friends who I know could understand it after explanation.

But yeah this article is bullshit :)

Missed one of the most important reasons for not jailbreaking: your work! Most enterprise MDMs can detect a jailbroken phone. And most MDMs will not deploy it on a corporate VPN/Wifi/Exchange if it’s been jailbroken. So if you want to take your device to work to access corporate emails, forget it!

Because there isn’t a jail break for IOS 6….yet! Most likely what ever that update does you can find an app on cydia that does the exact same. You shouldn’t have “unjailbroke” your phone because there will be a IOS 6 jailbreak that comes out very soon if it hasn’t come out some places already. To who ever created this is very invalid because i have had to restore at least 15 iphones in my time in the jailbreak world and yes apple says it voids your warranty but if you know what your doing then that dont mean shit. Honestly your everyday person could restore a jail broken item.

These are not really good reasons…
#1 All you have to do is restore your iphone and you still have a warranty. Besides, Apple makes certain that there are a myriad of ways to void a warranty. Unless you got the AppleCare+ (which is a waste of money), then your warranty is a limited one which only lasts 90 days. Chances are, your warranty is already null.
#2 See #1 . But it doesn’t really matter because Genuis Bar support is such a joke. They really can’t do anything you can’t figure out yourself except replace your device. For a hefty fee, that is.
#3 The only thing the “upgrades” really do is combat jailbreaking. The only useful things in the updates are either unnoticable or easily worked around with jailbreaks.
#4 I have only ever had one buggy app. All I had to do was get the same app from a different dev team. No issues.
#5 There is no such thing as a security risk on an apple product. Malware simply doesn’t affect them. The point is moot.

  82. derp derpson

    01/08/2013 at 4:00 am

ok this is an absolute fail,
    1) jailbeaking does not void warranty unless it is detected by an apple shop worker. (e.g. they see a moving wallpaper or cydia) if ur phone is stuck on apple logo (in other words broken) hold volume up on you jb idevice and its fixed.
    2) you dont lose genius. i jb my ipad and it still works.
    3) upgraading? ios 6 is crap anyway and not essential. ios 5 is good enough.
    4) it is the tweaks you apply that slow it down, not jb itself
    5) only retards say “u’ll get a virus and walwares and shit” only windows and linux are weak enough for viruses (no offence bill gates)

      You can go ahead an JailBreak it, here’s the best one so far, just follow the instructions and you’re good to go;
      https://evasi0n.com/

It won’t change the status of your phone to locked, it’ll remain unlocked, and so, any SIM card can work with it.
