5 Things to Know About the iOS 11.0.3 Update

Published

on

The iOS 11.0.3 update for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch continues to reign as the most up-to-date version of iOS 11 as we push into November.

Apple continues to release new iOS 11 updates at a rapid pace. The company currently has two milestone updates, iOS 11.1 and iOS 11.2, in beta. The company also released iOS 11.0.3, a maintenance update aimed at solving lingering iOS 11 problems on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Apple’s iOS 11.0.3 update is a bug fix update, but it’s actually a pretty sizable download. Like iOS 11.0.1 and iOS 11.0.2, iOS 11.0.3 is another 278MB download for the iPhone 7. It’s 280MB for the iPhone 7 Plus.

If you’re coming to iOS 11.0.3 from an older version of iOS, your download will likely be larger thanks to features and fixes from the update’s you skipped. They’re baked in. If you’re upgrading to iOS 11 for the first time, you can expect a very substantial download.

The iOS 11.0.3 update fixes problems on the iPhone and iPad, but we’re hearing about the iOS 11.0.3 problems plaguing iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users. Some users are reporting installation issues, others are reporting immediate battery drain and issues with GarageBand.

Our iOS 11.0.3 update guide goes over the most important things to know, right now, about these iOS 11.0.3 problems. It also includes our quick iOS 11.0.3 reviews for the iPhone and iPad, fixes for iOS 11.0.3 problems, the iOS 11 downgrade, and what to expect next from Apple.

iOS 11.0.3 Review

Apple’s iOS bug fix updates sometimes are just a few megabytes. However, the last three iOS 11 updates have been substantial downloads.

The iOS 11.0.3 update is 278MB on the iPhone 7, 280MB on the iPhone 7 Plus, and 276MB on the iPhone SE. If you’re coming straight from iOS 11.0.2, your download should only take a minute or so provided you’re connected to a swift Wi-Fi network.

The iOS 11.0.3 installation will take a bit longer. The installation on these three devices took about five minutes, give or take a few seconds.

Again, if you’re coming from something older than iOS 11.0.2, you can expect your download and installation to take a little bit longer.

We’ve been using the new update on the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, iPhone SE, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, and iPad mini 2 for three weeks now. Most of these updates are stable.

We haven’t noticed any abnormal battery drain and we’ve successfully connected all of these devices to Wi-Fi (including eero), Bluetooth devices, and cellular networks.

We haven’t noticed any random reboots, but we’ve noticed user interface lag on the iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, and the ancient iPad mini 2.

Apps are performing well.  Our core apps include Asana, Slack, Twitter, Spotify, Podcasts, YouTube, and Gmail. We’ve noticed a few crashes, but that’s not out of the ordinary.

For the most part, iOS 11.0.3 feels stable. That said, new software, even maintenance updates like iOS 11.0.3, can cause major problems.

Older devices (like the iPhone 5s) are particularly susceptible to performance issues so those of you with an aging device should approach iOS 11.0.3 with caution.

If you need additional feedback about iOS 11.0.3 and iOS 11, take a look at our reasons to, and not to, install the iOS 11.0.3 update on your device right now.

We’ve also put together quick reviews for the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, iPhone SE, and the iPad Air 2, iPad Air, and iPad mini 2.

iOS 11.0.3: What’s New

The iOS 11.0.3 update is a maintenance update which means it comes with bug fixes. And like iOS 11.0.1 and iOS 11.0.2, it fixes serious issues with iOS and the iPhone.

Apple’s change log notes that iOS 11.0.3 fixes an issue where audio and haptic feedback would not work on some iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus devices. It also addresses an issue where touch input was unresponsive on some iPhone 6s displays. The company says this is because they were not serviced with genuine Apple parts.

The iOS 11.0.3 doesn’t bring any new features (that we know of) and it includes the security content of iOS 11.

iOS 11.0.3 Problems

We’re having a solid experience on iOS 11.0.3, but others are running into trouble with Apple’s latest iOS 11 update.

iPhone and iPad users are noticing installation problems (the update’s getting stuck during the download/installation process and we noticed an error you can see below), Bluetooth problems, weird battery drain, issues with first and third-party applications, Wi-Fi issues, and UI lag.

Apple’s acknowledged an iOS 11 Reachability bug, but it’s still present in iOS 11.0.3. Apple’s latest iOS 11.1 beta, iOS 11.1 beta 3, fixes the problem.

The company is also looking into a fix for GarageBand issues and an issue with iOS 11’s calculator.

If you’re noticing bugs or iOS 11.0.3 performance problems, take a look at our list of fixes for the most common iOS 11 problems. Our list covers abnormal battery drain, Bluetooth issues, and more.

iOS 10 Downgrade Closed

If iOS 11.0.3 starts acting up on your device you can try downgrading.

As of right now you can drop back down to iOS 11.0.1 or iOS 11.0.2 in an effort to improve your device’s performance.

Apple’s closed off the iOS 11.0 and iOS 10 downgrades which means there’s no going back to iOS 10. Once you download iOS 11 on your device, you’re stuck.

Apple will, at some point, stop signing off on iOS 11.0.1 and iOS 11.0.2 so those of you interested in downgrading will need to move pretty quickly. It won’t make an announcement ahead of time.

Our guide will take you step-by-step through the downgrade process.

What’s Next

The iOS 11.0.3 update fixes some bugs, but there still are plenty of iOS 11 problems. Apple hasn’t confirmed an iOS 11.0.4 update and we don’t expect one to emerge for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Apple’s next iOS 11 update will almost certainly be iOS 11.1. Apple recently released the fifth iOS 11.1 beta for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Apple hasn’t confirmed an iOS 11.1 release date, but it should arrive in late October or early November with several brand new features for iPhone and iPad users.

iOS 11.1 will deliver Unicode 10.0 and its new emoji characters to the iOS keyboard. The list of new emojis includes a zombie, a genie, an elf, an exploding head, a mage, a coconut, a sandwich, and a vampire. The iOS 11.1 update will also bring back the 3D Touch App Switcher gesture.

The company’s also promised to deliver Apple Pay Cash and person-to-person Apple Pay payments in Messages later this year and Apple employees are testing the service in iOS 11.1 beta. It’s unclear if it’ll make it into the final iOS 11.1 release.

Apple’s also confirmed an iOS 11.2 update and put that update into beta for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The iOS 11.2 update fixes the iOS 11 calculator issue and several other bugs.

If you’re dealing with unfixable iOS 11 issues and can’t wait for Apple’s next update, you might want to give the latest beta a try on your device.

4 Reasons Not to Install iOS 11.4.1 & 8 Reasons You Should

Install iOS 11.4.1 for Better Security

Install iOS 11.4.1 for Better Security

Apple's iOS 11.4.1 update comes with 15 patches for potential security issues. If you value your security, you should think about installing it today.

iOS 11.4.1 also comes with a USB Restricted Mode that disables the Lightning port on your iPhone or iPad if a device hasn't been unlocked or connected to a computer using a passcode within a certain amount of time.

The new setting is located in Settings > Face ID/Touch ID & Passcode. There you’ll see a new toggle for USB Accessories. It's toggled off by default.

This provides an added layer of protection and prevents the use of cracking tools like GrayKey.

If you skipped iOS 11.4, your iOS 11.4.1 update comes with 30+ patches aimed at improving your device's security. This makes it an essential download for most iPhone and iPad users.

If you missed any of Apple's previous iOS updates, your iOS 11.4.1 update comes with a lot more.

If you skipped iOS 11.3.1, your version of iOS 11.4.1 comes with iOS 11.3.1's four security patches.

If you skipped iOS 11.3, your iOS 11.4.1 update comes with 27 additional patches for potential exploits. Those of you lingering on iOS 11.2.6 would be wise to make the move sooner rather than later.

If you missed iOS 11.3, your iOS 11.4.1 update also includes a new privacy feature. When an Apple feature wants to use your personal information, an icon now appears with a link to access detailed information about how your data will be used and protected.

If you're running iOS 11.2.5 or older, you're currently exposed to an issue that lets people send a specific character that will crash an iOS-powered device and block access to the Messages app. It can also block apps like Facebook Messenger, Gmail, Outlook, and WhatsApp.

The iOS 11.2.6 update's main purpose was to patch up this issue. If you skipped iOS 11.2.6, you'll get these enhancements with iOS 11.4.1.

If you skipped iOS 11.2.5, you'll get 10 additional security patches including one for the malicious chaiOS link exploit.

If you're running iOS 11.2.2 or below and receive a certain GitHub link through your Messages app, your iPhone or iPad can lockup or respring. The Messages app will also become unusable.

If you're on iOS 11.2.1, your iOS 11.4.1 update includes security improvements to Safari and WebKit to mitigate the effects of Spectre.

Apple's iOS 11.2 update fixed several problems, but it also brought problems of its own including a potentially nasty zero-day iOS HomeKit vulnerability.

The vulnerability, discovered by Tian Zhang, allowed for unauthorized control of HomeKit accessories including garage door openers and smart locks.

Apple quickly rolled out a server-side fix, but the company restored full functionality with the release of iOS 11.2.1. If you skipped iOS 11.2.1 and use HomeKit, you should download iOS 11.4.1 right now.

If you skipped iOS 11.2, you'll get a few more patches with your iOS 11.4.1 update. Apple's iOS 11.2 update delivered 11 patches including one for Mail and one for Wi-Fi.

The iOS 11.2 and iOS 11.2.1 updates also patched up a widespread security issue called "Meltdown." Apple says its analysis suggests it "has the most potential to be exploited."

Meltdown affects all iOS 11 powered devices so we highly recommend downloading iOS 11.4.1 if you skipped iOS 11.2.

If you skipped iOS 11.1.2, iOS 11.1.1, and iOS 11.1, you'll get additional patches with your iOS 11.4.1 update.

The iOS 11.1 update delivered eight security patches including a fix for a serious Wi-Fi vulnerability called KRACK or Key Reinstallation Attack. KRACK is an exploit that targets the common WPA2 encryption protocol.

If you're just now making to move from iOS 10 (or whatever you're on) to iOS 11, your iOS 11.4.1 update will come with even more security-related features.

Apple's first iOS 11 update delivered several patches for potential exploits. iOS 11 also comes with new security features aimed at keeping your data safe.

In iOS 11 you can't establish trust with a PC using fingerprints alone. You'll also need to put in a full passcode in order to gain that trust.

If you want to protect the data you store on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you should make your move to the latest version of iOS. This is particularly important for those of you running older versions of iOS.

    Issues I have had:

Keyboard blocks most recent messages in iMessage, WhatsApp and FB messenger. Have to either touch chat to hide keyboard then bring keyboard up again…or close app and reopen

Récord screen has a audio option which is cool except when I send those videos on FB messenger or WhatsApp the audio doesn’t play (it plays in photo app).

    Flashlight lags to turn on.

Lock screen lags when it first appears (I am using a personal Live Photo)

    I USE IPHONE 7 128 GB

Updated iPad to IOS 11.03. My DirectTV app will no longer allow connection with Apple lightning connector to view my DirectTV when not at home. It worked Monday night, watched Football & Baseball. Updated Tuesday and now nothing!

I can’t seem to unmute a previously muted text message after downloading 11.03.
