5 Things to Know About the Galaxy S6 Nougat Release

Published

on

With Samsung’s Android 7.0 Nougat release starting to pickup steam, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge owners are starting to wonder about the status of their update to Android 7.0 Nougat. If we’re lucky, it could be out in a matter of days.

Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Nougat beta ended in December and the company is finally starting to make some progress with its release.

The Galaxy S7 Edge and Galaxy S7 Android 7.0 Nougat updates are rolling out to select models and they’re poised to hit a slew of new devices in the near future.

The company is starting with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, its two flagships, but Android 7.0 Nougat will hit plenty of other Galaxy smartphones and tablets including the popular Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Nougat release is confirmed but it hasn’t rolled out to any devices just yet. Again, that should change soon.

With a Samsung Galaxy S6 Nougat release getting closer, we want to take an early look at the most important things owners should know about Samsung’s plans. We’ve already taken a broad look at the release but this goes a little deeper.

For more on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Nougat update itself, please take a look at our Galaxy Android Nougat update roundup.

You Might Get An Update Before You Get Nougat

Your next Android update might not be Nougat.

Believe it or not, Samsung is still rolling out Android Marshmallow builds to the Galaxy S6 and many of you will probably get a new Marshmallow update before you get Nougat.

Samsung is currently rolling out Marshmallow bug fix updates and security patches to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

T-Mobile recently pushed security patches to both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge and the OTA (Over-the-Air update) should be picking up the pace as we push deeper into the month.

We expect the Galaxy S6 Marshmallow roll out to continue even as these devices start making the transition to Android 7.0 Nougat.

You Should Start Preparing for Nougat

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Nougat release is missing in action but you shouldn’t be sitting on your hands, not with a release this close. Now is a great time to get in some early prep work so that you’re ready to roll once your update arrives.

Samsung and its carrier partners will test the Galaxy S6 Nougat update for problems. They will squash a ton of bugs but we expect problems to slip through the cracks. They always do.

It’s difficult to predict what you might run into after you download and install Nougat on your Galaxy S6 and this is why we recommend doing some work before you install.

We recently put together a guide that takes you through our pre-installation process. It’s worth a look, especially if you’re new to Android.

Updates for older devices like the Galaxy S6 can be problematic so the more prepared you are the better off you’ll be. It’s never too early to start.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Nougat Release Date

Samsung hasn’t announced a specific Galaxy S6 Android 7.0 release date but we do have a release window to share with you.

In an announcement, the company confirmed plans to release Nougat for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge sometime in the first half of the year.

In other words, you can expect the roll out for both devices to start up sometime before the end of June. And perhaps, sooner than you think.

Samsung Turkey recently released a Galaxy Nougat roadmap and it looks like the company is planning to release Nougat for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge in February. The company has since pulled the schedule.

Imminent release or not, the company is making progress behind the scenes.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Android 7.0 Nougat update surfaced in a GFXBench benchmark and it also received its Wi-Fi certification. The Wi-Fi certification was a necessary step ahead of the worldwide release later this year.

Most Carriers Are Silent About Nougat

While carriers are starting to talk about the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge Nougat release, they aren’t talking about the Galaxy S6 Android 7.0 update’s release.

Vocal carriers like Optus, Telstra, Vodafone, and Telus all remain silent about their plans for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

This means that the Galaxy S6 Android 7.0 release is probably several weeks away (at the very least) for those carriers.

We expect these carriers, and others, to get their Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge Nougat releases out before they focus on their Galaxy S6 updates.

In the United States, T-Mobile’s confirmed plans to release Android Nougat for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge but those updates remain in the “Manufacturer Development” stage.

Once they move into the T-Mobile Testing stage you’ll know that a release for both Galaxy S6 models is imminent.

AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint haven’t confirmed anything just yet though all of them are expecting to roll out Nougat to the Galaxy S6.

Galaxy S6 Edge+ Nougat Release

If you own a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ you will also get the bump up to Android Nougat at some point down the road.

Samsung’s confirmed the Galaxy S6 Edge+ Nougat release for the first half of 2017 though it stands without a specific date. Samsung Turkey recently claimed that it will roll the device’s Nougat update out in early March.

It has also shown up in benchmarks, a sign that it’s currently in development in Samsung’s labs behind the scenes.

In the United States, T-Mobile’s confirmed plans to release Nougat for the Galaxy S6 Edge+ though the update remains the “Manufacturer Development” phase.

Its release, like the others, is probably weeks away at best.

3 Reasons Not to Install Galaxy S7 Nougat & 8 Reasons You Should

Install Nougat If You Want Better Security

Install Nougat If You Want Better Security

Let's start with some basics.

If you value your security, and most of you probably do, you'll want to think about installing an Galaxy S7 Nougat update soon after it arrives for your device.

Every month, Google and Samsung release important security patches for Android devices. Your Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Android Nougat update should bring the latest security patches to your device.

Samsung's initial batch of Galaxy S7 Nougat updates delivered the company's January security update but the latest updates deliver newer security patches. You can read more about them over on Samsung's website

If you failed to download or receive an older security update (May, June, etc), you'll also get those patches when you install Android 7.0 Nougat for the first time.

On top of the patches, Samsung's Galaxy S7 Nougat update brings Samsung Pass, a way to secure your identity using biometric data rather than entering your password or ID.

Samsung Pass is like a master key for your various logins and it relies on Galaxy S7's fingerprint scanner. The biometric data is encrypted and stored safely by Samsung Knox.
