5 Ways the iPhone 5s Beats the Galaxy Note 3

Published

on

The iPhone 5s is continually one of the best smartphones users can buy and more often we are seeing users compare it with the large screen Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

While Apple enjoyed a major lead over the Samsung Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 2, the Galaxy Note 3 marked a big improvement for Samsung bringing this phablet in to the buying consideration of more shoppers.

If you are looking for a new smartphone and are considering jumping from iPhone to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, we suggest checking out these ways the iPhone 5s beats the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 before singing a two-year contract.

iPhone 5s Review | Galaxy Note 3 Review

Of course the Note 3 isn’t without its merits, so be sure to check out the ways the Note 3 beats the iPhone 5s before buying a new smartphone.

It’s easy to focus on size alone thanks to the relatively small iPhone 5s display, but the iPhone is more than just a smaller phone.

iPhone 5s Design

Despite the strides Samsung made with the Galaxy S4 design, the Galaxy Note 3 arrived with a love it or hate it plastic leather back, complete with fake stitching on the edges. Some users like this and thanks to thinner bezels and a thinner overall design, but next to the iPhone it’s clear the iPhone 5s is on a different level.

The iPhone 5s design is much nicer than the Galaxy Note 3.

The iPhone 5s design is much nicer than the Galaxy Note 3.

Visually the iPhone 5s and Galaxy Note 3 are close enough to think of as equals, but the tactile feel of the iPhone 5s is what separates them. The aluminum and glass of the iPhone 5 deliver a premium feel that the Note 3 doesn’t match. For users that don’t hide the iPhone 5s away in a case, this is a big benefit for the iPhone 5s.

One Handed Use

The iPhone 5s one handed use.

The iPhone 5s one handed use. By holding the iPhone 5s here I can reach any part of the screen.

If you love to use your smartphone with one hand, the iPhone 5s is a clear winner. One of the reasons Apple only switched to a 4-inch display was to maintain easy use with one hand, and it pays off. The iPhone 5s is easier to use than the Galaxy Note 3 while walking and carrying a drink and many other activities where you only have one hand free to hold the phone.

The Galaxy Note 3 one handed use. TO better reach the middle of the screen I typically hold the Note 3 like this.

The Galaxy Note 3 one handed use. TO better reach the middle of the screen I typically hold the Note 3 like this.

As the image above shows the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is big enough that some operation is lost with one-handed use. There are special modes to move the keyboard and dialer to one side for easier one-handed use, which does help. There is an overall option that shrinks the on-screen display down to about the same size of an iPhone 5s, but it’s not realistic to use this on a daily basis.

After using the iPhone 5s and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for several months the iPhone 5s is definitely easier to use with one hand.

Overall User Experience

Apple still leads the pack in the overall user experience with included apps and services, and unfortunately for users that like the Galaxy Note 3 Apple keeps the best services restricted to sharing between iOS devices.

iMessage is an indispensable tool for many of the Gotta Be Mobile writers because our team-members, friends and family use the service. Google Hangouts and Google Voice attempt to fill this hole, but Apple still offers a service that more of the users we interact with use and want us to use.

Easily sharing photos via Photo Stream is just one example of the iPhone 5s user experience that is better if you are friends with a lot of iPhone owners.

Easily sharing photos via Photo Stream is just one example of the iPhone 5s user experience that is better if you are friends with a lot of iPhone owners.

Sharing photos on the iPhone with other iPhone users is also easier thanks to Photo Stream. On a recent trip all but one family  member carried an iPhone and the odd man out had to jump through hoops to see the Photo Stream. Google+ is an alternative but even though most users on our trip had a Gmail account they don’t use Google+. It is still also the easiest way for us to share photos with grandparents and other users who aren’t big on email attachments.

Apps routinely come to the iPhone before Android, look or work nicer on iPhone and sometimes are only available on iPhone, adding to the overall iPhoen experience.

iPhone 5s Flash

The iPhone 5s includes a dual-LED flash that Apple calls a True Tone flash. Thanks to the two LEDs and the processing power of the Apple A7 processor the iPhone 5s can detect and then fire a flash that uses one of over 1,000 combinations to deliver better looking photos with colors that are closer to real colors.

The photo above was taken in a dark room with the iPhone 5s flash set to On. The image below was taken on the Galaxy Note 3 with the flash set to on. The top image delivers a better overall representation of the subject.

Galaxy Note 3 Flash Sample.

Galaxy Note 3 Flash Sample.

While the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 camera app offers more functions and modes that we use while we are out and about, the iPhone 5s flash is clearly a better than the one on the Note 3.

Fingerprint Reader

The iPhone 5s is Apple’s first iPhone with a fingerprint reader for added security and ease of use. Many users did not put pass codes on the iPhone because of the hassles of unlocking the phone when they needed to use it. The iPhone 5’s fingerprint reader allows users to register five fingerprints and unlock the iPhone 5s by pressing down on the iPhone home button. Overall this works very well, though some of the Gotta Be Mobile staff needed to set up Touch ID multiple times.

The iPhone 5s fingerprint reader makes it easier to unlock the iPhone and more likely that a user will secure it.

The iPhone 5s fingerprint reader makes it easier to unlock the iPhone and more likely that a user will secure it.

Rumors suggested the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 would include a fingerprint reader, but it did not bring on to market. Users need to use another method such as a pattern or the less secure facial unlock to unlock the Galaxy Note 3. Users who own a Galaxy Gear can set the Note 3 to unlock when the phone and watch are near, but there is no simple fingerprint unlock feature.

I had iPhone 5s and now have note 3 and a Xperia Z1 and josh you must be a fanboy the 5s sucks too small hard to text on made for baby fingers like your d.ck android has 2gb/3gb ram apple still has only slow 1 gb ram and apple says the fastest iPhone yet?? Nope I don’t think so!!

Apple is still trying to make us all believe iOS is actually running True Multitasking in their imitation Multitasking using their ominous sounding “Preemptive Task Management”. Which is simply suspending one task in order to run another more important one!

So no wonder it can run one App faster than Android can run many Apps at the same time!!! lol…. iOS is a one dimensional one trick pony and no matter what they say, it can never run true “Pervasive Multi-tasking” or Multithreading system wide. So let’s see Google or Samsung challenge Apple iOS to Multitasking War. We on Android take it all for granted, because we like being able to run a real file manager, fast search, several apps and Google Now all at the same time. Whereas Apple’s iOS since it’s using it’s hierarchical HFS+ file manager system can only stack tasks…. one on top of the other and running them ONE AT A TIME!

Galaxy Note not only would KILL iPhone 5s on with true PiP PoP multi-window w/ Drag n Drop, but S-Pen is becoming an irreplaceable feature in creating content using a vast assortment of tools from it’s S-Pen’s Wacom Heritage! …..in the right hands, Galaxy Note still doesn’t have a competitor to speak of and Apple made the decision a long time ago to develop some way of replacing a Stylus with our fingers. Fingers even Cavemen gave up on after inventing paintbrushes and paints to write and create with.

No freaking way will finger painting and drawing in the sand with fingers to write….., ever replace the 1000’s of Tools man has invented over history to use to make that all easier. It’s like Apple thinking an auto mechanic could throw away all his wrenches and tools and just use his fingers to fix cars instead! lol…. ;-P ……and once you use the S-pen you understand all the power to create lies in the Power of the Pen…. S-pen that is!!!

Biggest Bullcrap article ever.. Clearly written by a Fanboy.
Design ok your right. Samsung can learn from Apple in that department.
Sharing photos only with friend with iPhones.
Do not know how it is at your place, but where I live Android is outselling the iPhone faster than a speeding bullet.
    So that statement is bullCrap…

And apple brags how many they sell BUT they NEVER tally count how many returned?? Nope!!! They are out for greed and profit not the buyers sorry to make all fanboys cry on that lol … Sniff sniff lol apple rips off even the fanboy and pays them at apple store for pennies

What is it with the iPhone – design-superiority crap? Its the ONLY smartphone on the market that has thick bezels, looks clunky and can easily pass for a buttonless DVD remote control! Lol. C’mon now, how can that compare to the elegant, streamline appearance of the other high end phones currently on the market?…ridiculous.

Design – the iPhone is too small and too slippery. One Handed Use – not really, either phone can arrange icons to make some easily accessible but both are too big to be able to hit every one without juggling the phone (in the picture, try and get your thumb down to the call icon) plus only one includes a real stylus. Overall User Experience – sharing works best if your friends have the same phone as you and OS agnostic apps can do everything for all phones. Flash – I’ll grant you this but if you want a camera that’s also a phone, get a Lumia. Fingerprint Reader – great when it works (which is doesn’t always) but not as easy as face unlock which also qualifies as great when it works (which is doesn’t always).

In short, it all depends on what you like in your phone or, what the Register very appropriately calls your fondle slab. I find the iPhone too small and too limited. Then again, I don’t own a copy of Angry Birds so I’m not in the target audience.

P.S. I’ve noticed these “I love my iPhone” posts around the web have stopped mentioning Siri. I guess Google Now has replaced her as the trophy app.

    • Apple is so yesterday

      12/24/2013 at 12:37 pm

Oh yeah, ‘siri’, I forgot about that. Like the ’64bit’ and ‘retina’, it was a short lived, questionable improvement and an area where they were quickly eclipsed by their competitors.

Apple can’t compete on real terms – they can only compete in marketing.

      • No FanBoys allowed

        12/24/2013 at 7:01 pm

I think this is the one post that pretty much sums up apple as a whole. Oh, with Jobs gone now, apple is lost like it was before the iPod was introduced.

          12/25/2013 at 5:03 pm

I’ll give you marks for design, but your comment regarding the flash is so horribly off that I just had to say something. As a pro photog, your statement is wrong as the apple image is over blown and that is clearly not a true representation of anything. The note 3 is clearly the winner. I love my note 3. I loved my iPhones. I needed more; Samsung Android delivers.

  7. jjlarsen

    12/24/2013 at 11:08 am

How many times has this same article been written by a different person, and how many times is the fingerprint reader considered the killing blow? “The top image delivers a better overall representation of the subject.” TIL poodles have glowing white heads.

    • Apple is so yesterday

      12/24/2013 at 12:34 pm

This is how apple fans operate. Apple does something thats not really that impressive, and apple fans run around declaring how great it is, while ignoring everything that is shitty about iphones.

People still talk about ‘retina displays’ as if it meant something, lol. That’s a trademarked word, and today it really means “inferior” as the leading phones support far better overall resolution and/or dpis. Stay away from ‘retina’, ‘retina’ was good 3 years ago but today it means ‘shitty.

Ya exactly my Xperia Z1 has a res at 1080×1260 and 20.7 mp cam apples retina is 1280×640?? Ya some great clarity so apple fanboys go screw themselves Xperia don’t brag or android WHY?? We’re the best and people know that apples desperate so they lie, also 2 gb ram Xperia apple say fastest yet at only 1 gb ram apples hopeless

The “best designed” phone in the world right now is the HTC One, an android phone.

    The HTC one is excellent.

If you want excellent design, look beyond apple’s bullshit marketing. Look at the HTC One.

Its really sad for Apple that *these* are the features chosen to make the ihpone look better than the Note 3. The Note 3 must be a really great phone!

My wife and I bought new phones together. I bought the Samsung Galaxy S3 (staying within our budget) and she bought the iPhone. She was regretting her decision within an hour…. It wasn’t what she thought it should be and almost went back to her old Android. She chose the iPhone because she thought it would be easier to use along with her ipad.
Next time she won’t buy an iPhone.

Is funny how there are still dumb people that buy a non-HD smartphone at the price of a FULL HD smartphone. Come on, the iPhone 5S screen is the same exact tiny one from the iPhone 5 (1136 x 640 pixel resolution). ALL new premium smartphones are FULL HD (1920 x 1080) and this is something you can REALLY notice.
Using a tiny non-HD smartphone feels like watching a movie on a non-HD TV.
Is your choice if you decide to buy a cheap car at the price of a expensive one.

There are also a lot of stuff you can’t do on an iphone that you can do on an Android smartphone.

your “5 ways” are so Funny….Let’s play with your 5 ways with a normal human being point of views:

    Comparison Iphone 5S to Note3
    1. Hardware Design:
Look: 10 to 9 . not much different ! after put on the phone case, they all look the same.

size: note3 replaces a tablet. it 5.7″ still fit my jeans. fits into women hand bags. bigger
display for internet, and gps navigation. iphone 5S is just a tiny phone.

“One handed use” : you need to learn some basic tricks from note3 before you criticize it.
turn on the one handed operation mode in note 3 to enable shrinking the
display to “any size” you wish. that’s is a 2 in 1 advantage that your
iphone5s is still need to learn how to catch up with Samsung technology!

Flash: can not tell the different, do we have to look at each picture with a microscope?
is this a biology class? or Go discuss this with a photographer when you want to talk
about picture “quality”. The photographer will think your iphone 5s flash worths like a
    “penny” …..hee hee.

Finger Print reader: note3 using pattern lock is faster to unlock then finger print method.
I guess you have too much secrets to hide from your wife ! haha! that’s
why you need finger print technology to unlock.

In regards to the pic comparison, the dogs face is too bright in the iPhone pic. I prefer the Note 3 pic as it seems more natural looking. And in my opinion, the fingerprint reader is a gimmick that won’t make anyone but true iPhone fans excited. And it doesn’t work that well. My wife stopped using it because she got tired of it not responding. There is absolutely nothing about the iPhone 5 that makes me feel that it’s superior in any way to the Note 3.

What else can I add? I have an Iphone 5 for work, (that means I use it 5 days a week). and I own a Note 3,, Note 3 is a much more complete system. I phones are for music (Itunes) pics and texting… you need to read the many articles out there,, Get off the toy and get a real phone. Everyone I know says the Iphone 5 is too hard to text with, because the keyboard is SO small.. and maybe if you would learn to set up your Note 3 as being left handed (yes I see you are a lefty) you wouldn’t have to reach to the other side of the screen…

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, thank you for the laugh, I will have to remember and read your funny reviews, next time I am feeling a little sad what you forgot to add was the i in iphone really stands for IDIOT.

I have what would be called small hands, I have not customised the layout of my Note 3 yet, but I can still handle it ONE HANDED easily even without the need of turning on the One-Handed setting. One reason for that is the tactile feel of the back cover, it gives better grip. another point to the Note 3 is its ability to shoot 4k movies at 30fps or normal HD at 60fps :D:D:D:D:D.

The Note 3 has the power to do everything I want and still have plenty left to do more. I(diot)Phone, cannot do 2 things at once let alone 4 or 5

Marketing all right, they still say retina and the fools think its still the best its not. Its actually becomeing the worst out there. Untill the iphone has a full hd display 1920 x 1080 p screen and more than 400 ppi and the ability to download massive amounts of data wirelesly from the store or any site with movie downloads. The ability to pop in a usb flash drive to then stick into the telly and watch, i will stick with Android. You can a teeny weeny screen that calls and txts only because to use it for multimedia is a joke! i tried to help my boss with a iphone recently and i was that close to throing it under a truck! its the worst experience i have had on a phone WHERES THE BACK BUTTON god dam it!

  32. Candycrate

    01/31/2014 at 1:06 pm

These 5 reasons DON’T make 5s better than Galaxy Note 3. Let me explain:

    1) At least Samsung is changing and improving the deisgn unlikely Apple (CAUTION i am talking about design AND NOT build materials). Yes the iPhone has Aluminum body BUT that doesn’t mean its more DURABLE than Galaxy Note. Why? Because Aluminum easily gets scratched or dent. On the other hand Galaxy Note’s plastics are unbelievable DURABLE (Like Galaxy Note 1 flexible back cover).

    2) One handed use???? Pffff please. Have you ever heard people saying: “Once you go black you never come back”??? I’ve been an iPhone 4 user in the past and moved to Galaxy Note 1. It took me few weeks to get used to the size of Note and how to grab it but once you get used to it you’ll see how EASY it is to hold and operate even with 1 hand. And now everytime i grab an iPhone i laugh because it seems like a toy. Trust me SIZE matters!!!

    3) Overall user experience and “Apple still leads the pack in the overall user experience with included apps and services”. Let me laugh, HAHAHAHAHAHA. Few Words: Android, Open Source, iPhone Limitations (we are not talking about devices that have been jailbreaked – iOS – or rooted – Android). The Play Store offers you THOUSANDS of apps that let you modify your phone to the MAX (such as LAUNCHERS!!!) unlikely Apple. There are ton of other apps which greatly improve the user experience!!! Oh and about Siri: its only in English making it USELESS for more than 180+ countries.

    4) I don’t see any big difference in those two photos. Instead i see that the dog in iPhone’s picture has more glare which starts to ruin the photo. Too many light is NOT good!!! I prefer the brightness level of Note 3.

    5) No comment…. nah i want to say it……. ehhmmmm….. : IN THE NEXT IPHONE GIVE ALSO YOUR DNA TO THE GOVERMENT….SHEEEEEEEEEEEEPS!!!!! As you can see its not a feature. Its a disadvantage. Oh and if the fingerprint reader gets scratched (which is easy. Just check Youtube) the fingerprint will NOT be recognised which is a FAIL!!!!

Now my turn. Why Note 3 is WAY better than iPhone 5S:

    1) Super Amoled Screen. The colors are far more vivid especially the black color. Put a 5S next to (any) Galaxy phone with Amoled and check the black. Samsung will give you pure black and iPhone will give you a bright black.

    2) Note 3 has FULL HD screen (1,080 x 1,920). iPhone 5s has …… 640 x 1,136!!!!

    3) Note 3 CPU: QUAD-Core 1.9 Ghz. iPhone 5S: DUAL (HAHAHAHA)-Core 1.3 Ghz

    4) iPhone 5S ram: 1GB. Note 3…… well the TRIPLE (3 GB)

    5) Camera: iPhone 5S: 8 MP, Note 3: 13 MP

    6) Other features that Note 3 has and iPhone 5S doesn’t: Removable battery (so if the battery dies, guess what. YOU CAN REPLACE IT), Expandable storage, more than TWICE battery capacity, Barometer, Temperature sensor

Now those are REAL reasons for making a phone better than another…

Crap article… dude you need to focus on your customers in the drive thru. No more articles waisting people’s time. Let me get you back on task, repeat after me ” hi my name is Josh and welcome to McDonald’s. How can I help you.” Or “please review your screen and make sure it’s correct and pull forward to the Android window.” Get a clue bro!

Honestly you havn’t really USED the Note 3 to even compare it to an iPhone. Simply the freedom you get is enough to buy true technological customers. All i can do on an iPhone is text, download stuff from the app store and buy music. Whereas Android actually lets you download third party things, such as off of google or any website. Apple has its users trapped in thr Bubble of Bullshit. And until you break free you will never know what its like to use an actual smartphone

2007 called they want their “smartphone” back…
What a joke. Complete bias bull$#*+. What strides have the iPhone made in the past seven years. A fingerprint scanner. That’s real nice and all but how about a device that doesn’t feel like light weight brick in my hand. How about that cheesy commercial with the I5 release. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYYSeACJ9v0 Talking about how can something be bigger and smaller at the same time. How about how the note 3 manages to pack in an even larger display than its predecessor with an even smaller chassis and while we’re on the subject of size, it’s a phablet. It’s meant to be large, to. If you can’t text with it than don’t bother with it. IPhone is just a brand, a nifty little logo plastered on the back of a less than extraordinary device. Just a very expensive fad.

The article isn’t claiming that the 5s is “better.” It is pointing out 5 areas that the iPhone beats the Note.

I am typing this from a Note 3, which I’m in love with. The 5s camera takes superior pictures. It is probably easier to operate one handed. And it does have a finger print reader. The UI and design are a matter of opinion.

I’ve read both articles and Josh has unbiased opinions as to why each phone is superior. What’s funny is that in the Note 3 article, only 1 comment is from someone defending Apple. And in this article (written in favor of the IPhone 5S), only a couple of Apple fans have commented. I love my Note 3 and it’s been awesome watching Android develop and improve from one version to the next. The writing’s on the wall for Apple. You know it’s bad when an IPhone article is overwhelmed with comments stating that Android is better. GALAXY NOTE SERIES FOR LIFE!

It depends on the user preferences. Note 3 and iPhone 5s have pros and cons. So you can’t really compare them at all since it will depends on the users view point. I owned both 5s and note 3 and I would say they have their on functionality.

Try to be open minded guys. Respect others opinion. No one also forced you to be in this website. It was your choice to read the article as well. I’m not siding with anyone. Both phones are superb in their on ways.

I have just recently made the switch from apple to galaxy and I have to say that I’m in love with the note 3. It’s so much easier to organize everything and one if my favorite features is the snote.

How anyone can use a galaxy note 3 for an hour then pick up and then use an iphone 5 in the same way. Its been said many times over the iphone feels and looks like a toy after useing a note! thats how i felt when someone handed me one to do something on. Born and breed on galaxy s2 then s3 then on to note 3 with android. Useing the iphone is just like little johnnys plaything i gave him to keep him quiet. While dad has the grown up stuff! Whats with all those loud cartoony colours and a fistfull of apps on the front screen, wheres your meeting calender which displays realtime info on front screen, about everything. Not apps but realtime widgets, how do you work with these things!
