7 Common iOS 7 Problems & How to Fix Them

Published

on

In September, Apple finally released its iOS 7 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, an update that replaced iOS 6 as the company’s most current piece of software. Since its arrival on September 18th, iPhone and iPad users in particular have been vocal about iOS 7 problems and bugs that have been impacting their experience. Here, we take a look at what we consider the seven biggest iOS 7 complaints and offer potential fixes to iPhone and iPad users.

Back in June, Apple announced an iOS 7 update for its older devices including the iPhone 5, iPhone 4s, iPhone 4, iPad mini, iPad 4, iPad 3 and iPad 2. The company said that the update, with its new look and new features, would be rolling out to owners sometime in the fall. Fortunately, Apple delivered on that promise as the company announced a roll out date of September 18th alongside the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on September 10th. It then stuck to that date and made the software available through OTA and iTunes.

For the most part, iOS 7 reviews have been favorable and many iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners have had a seamless transition from iOS 6 to Apple’s new iOS 7. However, there are always rotten eggs with iOS updates and really software updates of any kind and we have been hearing about several iOS 7 problems that iPhone and iPad owners are having to deal with. Apple’s discussion forums are rife with complaints about iOS 7 issues, some big, some small.

Apple, for its part, has done a great job of keeping bug fix updates rolling out. First, we saw iOS 7.0.1 roll out to owners of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c to fix some issues on launch day. We also saw iOS 7.0.2 roll out in an effort to quell one of the security flaws that got discovered shortly after the arrival of iOS 7 last month. The company has also promised two major fixes in an upcoming update. iOS 7.0.3 is rumored for next week and it could be that it arrives with those bug fixes on board.

While some iPhone and iPad owners will get relief after installing iOS 7.0.3, there are still a few days between now and its release. And we also imagine that problems will linger after it finally does arrive. With that in mind, we wanted to share seven iOS 7 problems that we’ve been hearing about the most and offer some potential fixes, some temporary, to those in need.

iOS 7 Battery Life Drain

One of the issues that typically surfaces after any iOS update is battery drain. iPhone and iPad owners consistently complain about the negative impact that iOS updates have on their battery life and iOS 7 unfortunately did not escape their wrath. iPhone and iPad owners have been piping up about battery drain issues within iOS 7 but unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Apple considers this an iOS 7 issue. If it did, it would have acknowledged the issue and promised a fix, just like it did in iOS 6.1.

Instead, this is an issue that is likely going to be drawn out until the release of iOS 8 next year. And that means that iPhone and iPad owners are more than likely going to have to rely on unofficial fixes if Apple doesn’t quell the issues in incremental iOS 7 updates. Fortunately, there are quite a few things that iPhone and iPad owners can try, should the device start experiencing heavy battery drain.

While there are a ton of things that people recommend, we think there are seven key fixes that iPhone and iPad owners should try. The last resort of course is going to be a hard reset of the device, something that likely isn’t appealing to users, but something that actually might be a godsend for those sporting older devices like the iPad 2 and iPhone 4. It’s a tedious process due to having to back up the device but hard resets often will make the device feel like new. They also sometimes help immensely with battery life issues.

Wi-Fi Issues

iOS-7-battery-life-fixes-323x575For the past year, Apple’s discussion forum has seen lengthy threads in regard to Wi-Fi issues that iPhone and iPad owners have been having. Owners complained about a wide variety of issues from grayed out Wi-Fi to unstable connections. From the looks of things, it appears that many of those issues persist in iOS 7 as we’ve heard, and seen, complaints about Wi-Fi connectivity being up and down for some. We’ve also seen some owners complain about the connection being grayed out.

Unfortunately, Apple didn’t roll out an iOS 6 update to address these issues and we have a very good feeling that Apple isn’t going to send out an iOS 7 update to fix them either. That again means that iPhone and iPad users are going to have to rely on unofficial fixes that may work for some people but not others. We think that the same fixes that worked in iOS 6 may work with iOS 7. Users saw success with these fixes last year and they are worth a shot this time around as well.

We also suggest trying to reset the network settings on the iPhone or iPad. To do that head to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This isn’t a guaranteed fix but it’s certainly one to try if Wi-Fi isn’t playing nice. If that doesn’t work, it could be a problem with a router. We suggest making sure the router’s firmware is up-to-date. If it is, try resetting it. Some people have had success with that. Older routers seem to have issues with newer iOS updates so it’s possible that a router, not iOS 7, is to blame.

If nothing else works, we suggest trying a hard reset on the device as they, again, seems to solve some of the major issues with devices. If that’s not an optimal route, try taking it in to an Apple Store. It’s possible that if the issue is unsolvable that they’ll offer a replacement phone.

iOS 7 iMessage Problems

iOS 7 users with the iPhone have been complaining about issues with the iMessage service ever since iOS 7 and iOS 7.0.2 were released. Some users are able to receive iMessages but not send them and some aren’t able to receive them or send them. This is a big problem for those that don’t have unlimited texting plans because the alternative is sending a text message.

This is a problem that Apple has acknowledged and has promised to fix in a future update, likely the iOS 7.0.3 update that is said to be rolling out next week. In the meantime, users are going to be looking for some solutions to this issue and fortunately, there is one that has worked, at least temporarily. The first thing to try is toggling iMessage on and off. If that doesn’t work, try rebooting the phone. If neither of those work, it’s time to reset the device’s network settings.

photo1-323x575

To do that, head into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. The phone will reboot, and while users will lose their stored Wi-Fi networks, reentering a Wi-Fi password is a small price to pay for working iMessages. This solution hasn’t worked for one hundred percent of iPhone owners but it’s worth a shot if iMessage isn’t working.

Keyboard Lag

An iOS 7 complaint that emerged shortly after the release of iOS 7 was about lag within the keyboard. iPhone owners, iPhone 4s owners in particular, were very vocal about the lag found within the new keyboard, something that makes writing email and writing messages a real pain. This is an issue that is more than likely not going to get an official fix but lucky for those experiencing it, there is a way to make it stop.

2013-09-19-09.11.45-575x471

First, users will want to open up the Settings app and go to iCloud > Documents & Data. That will open up another window where there will be a toggle switch. Turn it off if it already isn’t and the lag issues within the keyboard should dissipate. If that doesn’t work, users will want to reset network settings as that appears to be another possible fix. To do that, go into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

FaceTime Issues

In addition to iMessage issues, we’ve been hearing complaints about another Apple service, FaceTime. iPhone and iPad users are apparently experiencing connectivity problems with visual and audio FaceTime calls and it’s something that we have experienced first hand. While there isn’t a fix that is working for one hundred percent of owners, there is something that those having issues will want to try.

Resetting network settings seems to be the trick for a lot of these issues and it has seemingly gotten rid of the FaceTime kinks for many users. iPhone and iPad users will want to access Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. If that doesn’t work, try toggling FaceTime on and off as that might do the trick as well.

We’ve been experiencing terrible audio issues with FaceTime audio and most of the time, the drop in audio quality comes when switching between cellular networks, so 4G LTE to HSPA+ on AT&T for example. While this isn’t a fix, we highly recommend using a stable home Wi-Fi network when making a FaceTime Audio call as they seem to be performing much better.

Security Flaws

In iOS 6, we saw a number of security flaws impact iPhone and iPad users. Those flaws allowed thieves to pass the lock screen and access things like contacts and the camera roll. Apple worked to quickly patch those flaws up and rolled out updates to address the issues. The same type of issues have emerged with iOS 7. Almost immediately, we saw a simple exploit allow users access to the camera roll, apps, contacts and more. Apple very quickly patched that issue up in iOS 7.0.2, only to see another flaw emerge shortly thereafter.

Right now, there is no known fix for the current security flaw that is affecting the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. We imagine that Apple will be fixing it in an upcoming update so our advice here is to keep a close eye on a device until the company is able to fix the problem. There is, however, a security flaw that can be remedied.

Recently, it was discovered that thieves can very easily prevent iPhone users from remote wiping their device by putting the device in airplane mode even with the iPhone locked with a passcode. We imagine that Apple will fix this exploit down the road but in the meantime, there is a quick fix for those that are worried about their security.

iPhone owners will want to open up the Settings app and tap on Control Center. There, there will be two options including Access on Lock Screen and Access Within Apps. Users will want to make sure that Access on Lock Screen is disabled. This will prevent access to Airplane Mode while the iPhone is locked up with a passcode.

Apps Crashing

We’ve been hearing a lot of complaints about applications crashing in iOS 7 and applications logging out iPhone and iPad users for no apparent reason. This isn’t an Apple problem so much that it’s a problem for app developers. So that means that there likely won’t be an iOS 7 stability update coming any time soon. There are a few things that iOS 7 users can try to make things more stable though.

First, make sure applications are updated. App updates with support for iOS 7 have been trickling out since launch and many iPhone and iPad owners out there are terrible about ensuring that their apps are constantly updated. Those who don’t like doing this will want to turn automatic App Store updates on as it will update apps automatically and ensure that they are always on the latest version with the latest bug fixes.

As far as apps that are logging people out, owners may want to turn off the Background App Refresh feature that is found in iOS 7. To do that, head to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. This seems to work for some people and it worked for us. If nothing works, it may be that the app simply needs to be updated with fixes.

How about guided access?! I use it for my 2yr old daughter. So she can watch movies without exiting out of it. But in iOS 7 it doesn’t work. None of the movie apps will work with it. HBO Go, STARZ Play, none of them! I’ve tried on 3 different phones. Please let this be known so a fix is made!!

Are you kidding??? You are complaining about something that doesn’t work for a 2yr old!!! Take it off her & try being a real parent & spend quality learning time with her by reading her a book…..you know, those thick things with actual paper & pretty pictures & things that children would be welcoming to.

Come on buddy. Are you a parent? She has plenty of books. But she so happens to like disney movies too. Especially on long rides. Dont you remember cartoons? Your ignorant rants are just mean. Think before you speek!

Wow Wally, you sure figured this guy out from a 4-line post about iOS 7! Rotten parent, doesn’t spend quality (or probably even quantity) time with his kid, doesn’t believe in books (possibly can’t even read), and you’ve also figured out that his kid would prefer seeing pretty pictures in a book than on an electronic device! Re-reading his post, I too can now see that it’s basically curtains for that poor kid–dropping out of school, drugs, low self-esteem, dead-end career. Probably clinical depression and even…madness!!! Wish we were all more like you.

Well it’s obvious your parents failed at raising you Adrian! It’s awful you would come to such conclusions and have the balls to express them out loud. I’m sure you hate yourself and wish daddy was the man he never was. Your just a reminder to myself that no matter what you do in life, there will always be haters. You actually took the time to comment on my parenting on a mobile site speaking about iOS. I feel sorry for you.

After moving to IOS7, the music app is in a mess ….. I had organized my library based on Genre and now i cannot listen to all the songs of a single genre ….. like in the earlier ios versions ….. im beginning to hate this version…. Can anyone help ?

Siri is a work around to this annoyance. Simply tell Siri, “Shuffle rock music (or whatever genre you like).” Your chosen genre will then playback shuffled.

Maybe you should read these discussions:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5331834?start=60&tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5328365?start=390&tstart=0

Let me sum up my observations in this discussion.

Everyone having a problem in these discussions has the following problem:

All phone affected are IPhone 4s
All problems occurred after the upgrade to iOS7
The issue we are experiencing is a greyed out WiFI button, which was not greyed out before.
We have tried all options advised by Apple to resolve this issue.
we are all unable to solve this problem ourselves constructively, although some of us have managed adhoc ‘fixes’ like hairdryers or using the fridge to ‘cool off’ the wifi chip.
Our iPhone 4s’s were operating without any noticeable problems prior to the upgrade to iOS7

The above makes me to draw the following conclusion:
There is a clear pattern and these are obviously not individual cases. It appears the wifi chip of the iPhone 4s is being of a substandard quality and not being not fully compatible with the new iOS firmware which causes this problem. Also most of the beta testing over the past months was done using the iPhone 5 and not the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s. Most likely because the 4 series were not part of the large scale testing Apple was not fully aware of this accelerated issue with the Wifi chip (when you do a Google search on “iPhone greyed out wifi” you see that this issue is not new, and you see the issue involves mostly the 4s ) But it seems iOS 7 pushed these weak and thus unreliable wifi chips just over the edge, causing them to overheat and thus to stop functioning altogether.

Apple must be fully aware of this issue by now but they are incredibly silent in communicating with their in my estimation ‘multiple thousands’ of customers worldwide experiencing this problem. Apple only sticks by claiming the upgrade to iOS7 is “at your own risk” (that’s what I was told) and sticking to the warranty period
(I bought my iPhone in Aug 2012, so am out of Apple warranty)

I feel that Apple should take their responsibility and help her customers in solving this quality issue.
As customers in good faith we bought this product (I paid some €600) having trust in Apple and in the faith the quality would be such that we could use it -with good care of course- for at least 2, 3 or even 4 years.

But unknown to her trusting consumers Apple created a product using a faulty wifi chip (hence the overheating issues which can eventually lead to failure)
As result of this us, we, customers are now stuck with an unusable iPhone for which we paid plenty of money.

( One thing I am sure of, if Apple would be a car manufacturer or an airplane manufacturer they would never get away with this, and would be forced to do a recall)

    My message to Apple:
It is now time to act. Taking responsibility never hurts (even if you for some reason feel you are not fully to blame) It gives you credit. And credit gives you loyal customers.

    Thank you.

I agree and it’s so bad Apple better fix it or face a class action lawsuit. I don’t think anyone is going to get away with selling $750 devices and then forcing an upgrade that does not work with wifi.

Thanks for a constructive take on things, unlike many of the comments above. I like it when the comments are as valuable as the article they follow, and not used as an opportunity to attack fellow readers.
I am shopping for an Android since Apple won’t acknowledge the problems with the 4S because of the update. You’d think it was a 3 GS with the lag in Safari and other problems.

iOS 7 sucks you can’t make pictures fit on the lock screen it’s made for a way bigger screen than needed!… The camera now sucks! Before iOS 7 if my daughter was moving and I took a picture it was perfect now it’s not! I use the camera a lot while in motion in my car while walkin or if things I like are passing by me used to be able to catch a great picture now it’s all a blur and a ll my picture worthy moment seem to be trashed!

    • LokiVII

      10/06/2013 at 9:45 am

I thought that you couldn’t make a picture fit your lock screen also but there is a way how.
      1. Go to picture that you want to make your lock screen.
      2. Screen shot that picture.
      3. Set to lock screen and it should work.

Honestly, Ive ben losing respect for Apple since the GS4 came out.
This iOwnShit 7 has done nothing but validate my dislike for Apple products.
My Ipod (most recent generation) moves so slow and I constantly have to press buttons twice.
Before it was seamless to use not its frustrating.
Steve goes and so does the ingenuity of this company.

Did they not test this before it rolled out???? WOW!

Battery life sucks. No problem with Wi-Fi. iPhone 4s. Had to buy a battery backup case. Now everything is okay. Wish they would fix the battery drain, maybe related to overheating the Wi-Fi chip.

OK I have found the magic button! :) Thanks to a posting on the Apple forum.
In this stuck multi app download issue your friend is: AIRPLANE MODE! Switch it off. Be sure to turn off all other buttons that could mess with your download such as auto-download. I even turned off iCloud back up so that nothing would clog the path. Restart. Turn off Airplane mode and voila you will see the little clocks on your applications (new IOS 7 feature–probably part of the download hang up problem) will pick up where they left off when they got jammed and one by one they will power up, zoom to the finish, and the next one will be triggered.
        AIRPLANE MODE is the key.
        :)

Do yourself a huge favor and DO NOT download 7.0.2 unless you wanna layout like a child’s fingerpaintings and shitty system with this autistic software. As I type this meaningless reply the ol’ sound of dial up plays over in my head. By the time I get done typing this laggin’ ass shit, I could probably have me a nice droid or Samsung delivered, set up and ready to use. This update is some serious horseshit and it would appear as though either Apple just doesn’t give a rats ass or the truth rolls out and they just wanna cash in on producing jankety software so consumers will buy the latest products. I’m about ready to go stone age and smash this goddamn phone. This shit sucks!!!!! Apple is going to suffer, if not already, great loss………..

Restore to factory settings using iTunes. Then setup as new phone. Do not restore from old backup. If that fixes the issue I would then restore from backup. If your issue comes back then it’s a problem with your backup. Sometimes going from iOS 6 to 7 it’s not a good idea to use an old backup. Especially if you were using a jailbreak.

Here is a message to Apple support that documents my problem and their inability to address it.
Thank you, but this was useless. I had already updated my iPhone 4 to IOS 7.0.2 Suddenly I cannot update apps because I am unable to agree to “terms and conditions” which pops up when trying to update apps. There is no “agree” button on the 54 page document and the “send by email” button doesn’t respond. I have synced with iTunes several times but that hasn’t helped. I’d appreciate some answer that acknowledges my specific dilemma since Apple clearly has nothing available on their site other than what you cited, which I already had done.

I upgraded my IPAD 3 to the new OS and I put guided access on for my girls and now it is telling me that my password is wrong. I try to reboot and it will reboot, Go to home screen try to go back to the app, then I click the home button once to get back to settings and then it forces the app to start. Then I am back being stuck where I was. If anyone can help it would be very appreciative. Because it is stuck on 1 app and that is it.

My guided access will no longer launch. I used the feature yesterday for the first time since updating the iOS and it was fine. I trident use the feature today and while I get the option to select guided access when I tripple click, nothing actually happens. I’ve tried it in different apps and I’ve tried forced restart but nothin is working :(

I’m having the same issue. In Settings/General/Accessibility shortcut, the guided access item is checked, but greyed. If I check other things (switch control, assistive touch), they all show up on the triple click, but guided access still does not function. I’ve looked for updates att the app store. It works fine on my iphone (both on 7.1.1 (11D201) version). I’m stumped

Don’t buy Apple products – none represent any reasonable value for money. New IOS are designed to kill of old hardware batch by batch … This is the only explanation why you see some people have problem while others don’t … Well, can you explain why wouldn’t they allow IOS downgrade ? I can’t … and I believe the only way not to be screwed by greedy compnay is not to buy their shit again.

My issue is with the ringer. My up/down is grey like it is disabled. When I switch the switch up and down…it comes back for a short moment…then goes away. I have talked to online Tech Support and taken it to the apple store and both have said, I need a new phone. I didn’t have the issue before the update and now I do My phone is a 4S.

I have a 4S, The battery seems fine, but the camera has issue. It constantly crashes on camera for multiple apps. Sometimes even for the built-in camera app. It is very annoying. They forced you to upgrade to iOS7, and now I am stuck…:(

Since loading 7.0.3 I no longer receive email on iPad mini? All settings appear correct. Any thoughts here?

One month ago, I finally upgrade my iphone to iOS 7.1, the first thing I noticed is camera crashing. Now it seems the camera crash a lot less, but once a while, it still crashes, not a big deal, but quite annoy.
