7 Reasons the iPhone 5 is Better Than the Nexus 4

Published

on

The iPhone 5 is the best iPhone to date, but is it better than the Nexus 4, Google’s flagship Android phone? That depends on each smartphone users priorities, but Apple’s iPhone 5 still leads the smartphone pack in a number of key areas. While some power users are attracted to the cutting-edge technologies packed in the Nexus 4, the iPhone 5 has the most robust ecosystem.

There’s a lot more to consider besides the below seven items when buying a smartphone purchase. Users should buy the phone that best fits their needs while remembering that we’ve yet to find the perfect phone. While the iPhone 5 is one of our favorite phones of all time, the Nexus 4 has some distinct advantages to look at as well.

iPhone 5 Has a Higher Capacity Than Nexus 4

Iphone 5 vs Nexus 4

The iPhone 5 is Physically Smaller, But Has Up To 4x the Storage Capacity of the Nexus 4

iPhone 5 storage capacity starts at 16GB and ranges all the way up to 64GB. The highest capacity might not be necessary for everyone, but apps, photos and HD video can gobble up space much faster than some users expect.

By comparison, the $299 Nexus 4 comes with a paltry 8GB of storage capacity and the $349 version matches the basic iPhone 5’s 16GB capacity. Those kinds of capacity simply aren’t enough to fully realize the Nexus 4’s potential. High-end games can gobble up hundreds of MB each, while HD movies are well over 1GB. Google Play does allow users to stream movies rather than downloading them, but streaming movies is prohibitively expensive on mobile networks. Shooting video with the Nexus 4 gobbles up between 50MB and 90MB per minute depending on settings.  Don’t forget that the Nexus 4’s operating system and stock apps take up a bout 2GB of capacity out of the box, leaving just 6GB or so for users’ files, apps and games.

It’s truly pitiful that Google decided to sell a flagship device with 8GB of storage in the final months of 2012 and into 2013. That used to be ok in the age of SD video and VGA smartphone cameras, but we’re in an HD world now and Google needs to make devices that can store big files. Unlike many Android phones, users can’t add storage cards at will.

iPhone 5 Has 4G LTE

The iPhone 5 is the first iPhone to feature 4G LTE technology, which is what many people consider the only real 4G. In areas with solid 4G LTE coverage, the iPhone 5 downloads and uploads files blazingly fast. The  Nexus 4 may be the best Android phone money can buy without 4G LTE. Instead, the Nexus 4 uses HSPA+ wireless technology, which isn’t as fast as 4G LTE.

The AT&T iPhone 5 can download data at about 30 Mbps in Silicon Valley, while the Nexus 4 downloads at about 15 Mbps. There’s an even bigger contrast in upload speeds between AT&T’s 4G LTE and T-Mobile’s HSPA+ networks. As I mention in the above video, you probably won’t notice the speed difference a lot of the time, so long as your area has strong signals from both AT&T and T-Mobile, but T-Mobile doesn’t perform as well everywhere.  Some people, such as those that stream video or download a lot of big media files, should go for the absolutely fastest network available.

iPhone 5  Easier to Use than Nexus 4

The 4.7″ Nexus 4 display sure is nice for watching movies and reading Web content, but it’s a pain to reach each every corner comfortably, even for users with big hands. The 4″ iPhone 5 display strikes a nicer balance between screen real estate and usability since it doesn’t require users to contort their thumbs to reach for on-screen buttons and icons.

iphone-5-vs-nexus-4-display

Nexus 4 Display Compared to the iPhone 5

The Nexus 4 and iPhone 5 are approximately the same thickness, but the iPhone 5 is noticeably narrower, making it more comfortable to hold in most situations, especially while on voice calls. The smaller dimensions make it reasonable to stuff the iPhone 5 in a case without making the package too big  to fit in some pockets or creating a big bulge. The Nexus 4, like other large Android phones, feels too hefty with a moderately protective case. It would be laughable to carry the thing with a rugged case should a company like OtterBox decide to make a Defender Series case for the Nexus 4.

The iPhone 5 will instantly feel familiar to anyone that’s used an iPod touch, iPad or older iPhone. Its user-interface doesn’t have auto-updating widgets and it can’t be customized as much as the Nexus 4’s, but the truth of the matter is most people would gladly trade in advanced features for something they can actually figure out how to use. What Android enthusiasts called ‘locked in’, everyday users call security and convenience.

Most people don’t follow the ins and outs of the latest smartphone developments, nor have the wherewithal to figure out how to do everything with Android. There are certainly bright spots in Android, but it the features, Google’s built-in apps, and third-party apps aren’t as cohesive as what’s found on the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 Has Better Support Than Nexus 4

iphone-5-vs-Nexus-4-stores

Apple’s and its wireless partners offer iPhone 5 users something Nexus 4 users will have trouble find: real support. Having trouble with an iPhone 5 or just need to learn how to use the thing? All you need to do is book an appointment at an Apple Genius Bar or waltz into one of Apple’s stores and take a class. Real humans will be there to give you a hand and even replace your phone if there’s a defect.

Google is selling the unlocked Nexus 4 through its Play Store and through T-Mobile, though the phone is just about impossible to order from Google or the carrier. Thus far, most Nexus 4 buyers are purchasing through Google’s Play Store, which means they can’t get direct support from T-Mobile, AT&T or any other carrier. The phone is actually manufactured by LG, which means there’s quite a few cooks in the Nexus 4’s kitchen. Need help with a defect? Get ready to send the Nexus 4 back to Google via snail mail. Support may not matter that much to some power users, but it is a very big deal to most people.

iPhone 5 Available on More Carriers

The Nexus 4 is only compatible with GSM carriers, which means it can’t run on Sprint or Verizon, two of the four biggest U.S. carriers. The iPhone 5 is available on  Sprint and Verizon, which is important if you’re tied up in a shared plan with family members. Unless you’re going to use a cheap pre-paid plan, such as the $30 per month T-Mobile plan, you may as well take advantage of the subsidies.

Screen Shot 2012-12-06 at 10.19.27 AM

iPhone 5 is Available on 3 of 4 Major U.S. Carriers or GSM Unlocked

Carrier diversity is very important since coverage and call quality can vary from block to block. While some may praise a carrier as the best in the business, others simply can’t wait to ditch the same carrier because they can’t make calls from their homes or offices. Their simply isn’t a ‘best’ network in the United States for everyone. With the iPhone 5, you can have your pick of the litter, especially once T-Mobile and Apple finally get hitched.

Call quality’s just half the battle these days. Data speeds also vary wildly from block to block. For example, in some parts of San Francisco we see Verizon download speeds in the 25 Mbps range. In other parts of the city we can’t download anything faster than 7 Mbps or so.

iPhone 5 Lives in the Best Ecosystem

Though there are several reports about Android activations eclipsing iPhone activations, developers and accessory manufacturers still put the iPhone first. Android manufacturers can brag all they want about market share, but the truth of the matter is that nobody spends as much on apps and accessories as iPhone owners.

There are countless cases, headphones and other gizmos built specifically for the iPhone. There are a handful of Nexus 4 cases out there, but don’t expect to see anything close to the quality or quantity of Nexus 4 accessories to ever come close to matching the iPhone 5’s.

Apps are more important than cases and docks. iPhone 5 users are treated to the latest and greatest apps, while Android versions of popular iOS apps are seemingly always released weeks or months later. How often have you heard about some awesome app that’s available for iOS now with the Android version ‘coming soon’?

Screen Shot 2012-12-06 at 10.48.35 AM

Many More iPhone 5 Accessories Available Than Nexus 4 Accessories

Those who own Macs, iPads and other Apple gear will get the most out of the iPhone 5. The tight integration means users can do things like send and receive iMessages from any of their iOS or OS X devices. Buying a movie or album on one device means it’s available to download on any other.  It’s a seamless experience to go from watching movies purchased on an iPhone 5 to watching it on a big screen if you have an Apple TV. FaceTime is another Apple-only feature that makes it much easier to place and receive video calls from any device, so long as your friends and family also have iPhones or other Apple devices. Sure, Nexus 4 users can video chat, but not without doing some legwork to set up the calls in the first place.

The iPhone 5 Will Hold its Resale Value

Screen Shot 2012-12-06 at 10.35.32 AM

Nexus Phones Don’t Hold Their Value

Those that buy an iPhone 5 today at a subsidized rate stand a good chance of selling it for as much they paid for it a year from now. Depending on the iPhone model, market conditions and contract status, some iPhone users can upgrade to the latest and greatest iPhone once a year.

Android phones simply don’t hold their values the same way iPhones do. That’s partially because Google and manufacturers don’t support older phones with as much enthusiasm as Apple does. For example, Apple is still selling the iPhone 4, a phone that it introduced in June of 2010. The iPhone 4 doesn’t have all the features found in iOS 6 on the iPhone 5, but it’s pretty cool that Apple’s actively supporting a phone that’s 2.5 years old, an eternity in smartphone years.

Screen Shot 2012-12-06 at 10.45.17 AM

iPhone Owners Can Recoup the Original Purchase Price a Year Later

The iPhone 4S, which is just over a year old can easily be sold to a buy-back site like Gazelle for just over the $199 original purchase price.

The Galaxy Nexus, which also launched just over a year ago can only garner $103 from Gazelle. The Nexus 4 might be a bright spot in the Android landscape today, but it’ll fade quickly as next-generation smartphones are introduced in 2013.

Except 4G LTE, all other points mentioned here seems to be written biased towards Apple.Android is much better then ios. Iphone is costly device with most of the software locked into Apple ecosystem.

nexus 4 costs more than iphone 5 which has more storage… And ios is better than andorid. About 50 percent of my apps dont exist on the andorid stor including my favorites. iOs is so much better looking. S voice compared to siri is an absolute joke.

nexus only costs more than the iphone when its on your whatever contract which the carrier subsidizes, the nexus itself is only $309 on the play store (canadian, dunno exactly in american $), so no its not more expensive. For the apps, I can say exactly the same thing the other way. They each have about 700 000 apps, and just cuz they dont have exactly the same ones as each other doesn’t mean one store is inherently better than the other, the app store may be better for you but the play store is better for me becuase of the apps I use regularly. Also, all the most popular apps are in each because devs want the larger market of android and the market of people willing to spend more with ios. The aesthetics are the same, purely a matter of opinion, and as far as voice commands go people who test them side by side have repeatedly found google now (not s voice, but the actual integrated voice software) superior in quality to Siri, but lacking in attitude becuase it does what you want it to and doesnt have to cover its errors in humour and sass.

S Voice? No S Voice on Nexus devices. The Nexus 4 is only $300 unlocked with no contract and Google Now with Voice Search is far superior then Siri (just Youtube Google Voice Search vs Siri). Developers are all admitting that the Android OS has practically caught up with IOS and because of the much larger market share Android has worldwide, in the near future we will start to see the majority of developers launch their apps on Android first. Oh, and by the way…the Nexus 4 supports LTE on all Canadian carriers, as well as AT&T in the USA (Just need to change the settings). After reading your comments, especially the one where you said IOS is just “so much better looking” then Android, it’s obvious you haven’t experienced pure Google (Jellybean 4.2.1 for now) on a Nexus device. One last note…all the iPhone junkies said that the original 3.5″ screen size was all you need and then the iPhone 5 jumps up to a 4″ and now you all say that’s all anyone would need. What are you going to say when Apple eventually releases a larger screen? Apple fans need to do more research prior to releasing these articles/reviews/videos. It just makes you all sound like you have no idea what you’re talking about. I respect anyone’s opinion as long as it’s an informed one. The iPhone was #1 just over a year ago but Android (specifically the Nexus line? has caught and passed the features and overall experience of the smartphone market. If you do reply to my comment, please be accurate with your facts. (I own a 4th gen iPad and had the iPhone 4s BTW) Replaced my iPhone with a Nexus 4 and just got my Nexus 10. I also had the Galaxy S3 for a few months and even though Samsung interferes with the pure Jellybean experience with their Touchwiz features, it was still ahead of the iPhone. Just speaking from experience.

Being that you are some one with experience in both realms, how do you like your nexus 10? I had started with the windows tilt as far as smart phones go, that had an original droid, then iPhone 4 which I got rid of after 2 months, hated it, went to the thunderbold which was garbage (due verizon / not android ) and now have the Nexus 4 (best phone I have ever had). – along with that I have a Asus Prime which replaced my iPad (1) and now i have an iPad 2. I use the prime for any mobile business stuff I do, but the nexus 4 is starting to trump it. _ preffer to surf the web with the iPad 2 and what I am wondering is how does surfing compare with the nexus 10 to the prime or iPad.

I have to agree with some about the iPad apps looking better, but that really seems do to first to market and now G.Play is catching up with the quality of of apps. – Play is much easier to use and search.

One of the best things I have seen using the nexus 4 / is the ability to start and email on the phone while out to lunch then walking into the office and finishing it up on my PC – seamless.

Seriously I am really want to know what you call supirior ?
S voice search does not work I wanted it to work so well on Nexus 4 and it does not. It works on a samsung S3. Sorry to tell ya I have android and I have Iphone 5
I could not give a monkeys about supporting a brand. I do not care about brands I care about stuff working. I have experience in IT phones and pretty well with anything technical. I can tell ya that IPHONE5 voice comands are reliable not so with android. I said call filiz it says felez philis cheese ect.
If you want to defend something just on brand preference then you should keep it to yourself. I am willing to listen to your advice if you think you got a good app that works like siri on iphone 5? I even spend 30 Dollars on a voice command app on android which is useless also. I am sorry to tell you my Siri on Iphone really does what I tell it too. In my nexus it work on search but that is not useful I need this to call wife and do other task in this case it aint doing it.
I could not care less about brands I want stuff to work and base my research on functions not on brands!

considering the fact that there are 128 gb micro sd cards out there now, the base storage on an android phone no longer matters. whereas with apple, you are stuck with the space you bought.

Are you serious …. you can buy two nexus 4’s for the less than what Apple sells their iPhone5 for ….. Come on. If you want to use ios stuff … dont compare to Android!
Google talk is much better than Siri … & android has much better app integration & sharing capabilities between apps.
I am very happy I moved from iPhone to Nexus 4 …

    • Chimera57

      01/30/2013 at 10:43 pm

You definitely spend a lot of time toying with features of your phone instead of using it. It also further proves that you don’t actually own an iPhone or use it extensively. I come from the Android world, so I am familiar with it. Nobody in the progamming world would dare say Android is superior than iOS. I, however, agree hardware implementations can vary greatly among makers, and so attract different buyers.

      • programmer

        02/02/2013 at 8:36 am

In the programming world android has a loving open source community, and the level of app integration is far superior to ios. Want to attach a file to your sms from drop box(or other apps)? No problem share drop box select it done.

A locked system has its place, it can be a great system(for both consumers, and developers). Now what I assume you’re trying to say is in a “programming world” heavily focused on QA or the last few steps of the development cycle “ios is superior” that is very true less hardware to test less bugs and kinks to work out more money saved everyone is happy.

I like to think(and this is a biased opinion based on stereotypes I see) the iPhone as a phone for my parents someone computer/technologically illiterate, or hipsters(every year always has to have the new phone, trying to be the center of attention), and it can be a pretty good business phone. Of course it doesn’t mean my parents or any of those people can’t use android, it’s easy to learn with lots of customization which can deter people and feel hard to master. iPhone is a great phone, even better when jail broken, but I like android more.

It’s all personal preferences but people can’t leave it at that and make shots at what they don’t like in the opposing device and blindly don’t see faults of their favorite devices. I see mine, and I’ve weighed and factor it into my decision for a phone do you see yours?(all of you)

Sorry for that gentle “rant” after the first two paragraphs didn’t feel like making two posts think of the first one as a reply second one to everyone :p

Again I invite you to please test voice commands on Nexus 4 with Iphone 5 then be honest which is better ?
Fck this bullshit had apple cos I had apple base it on something real on working stuff?

            02/11/2013 at 7:22 am

It would be great if you could actually reply in a more civil and coherent manner instead of sounding like a 12 year old fanboy all the time. And yes I have tested voice commands on both the iPhone and the Nexus 4. Firslty S-Voice is SAMSUNG specific, Google Now which uses Google Voice Search is on the Nexus 4 and it trumps Siri every time for searches and phone search and basic hardware commands, however Siri has much better integration for phone tasks and telling the phone to do something specific like with an app. I use Google Now for predictive information when out and about, travel info and search; which it does far better than Siri. Both the Nexus 4 and the iPhone are great handsets and fit the niches of different needs and audiences, I prefer android and the Nexus 4 easily but that’s my opinion.

    12/06/2012 at 12:00 pm

You should change the currently misleading title to “7 Reasons the iPhone 5 is Better Than the Nexus 4 *in the US*.”
Other parts of the world don’t have 4g lte so that point doesn’t matter for them
same thing for Sprint and Verizon, most of the world runs on GSM networks, which the Nexus 4 works on just fine.
The resale value is another thing, in other parts of the world (where you have to buy the phone full price) the Nexus costs only around $350, the iPhone (same storage capacity) is $700. Selling the phone the next year, you’ll probably get about $250-$300 for the Nexus, and $450-$500 (these numbers are listed on ebay for unlocked, mint condition, 1 year old models). This means that the Nexus will depreciate in value anywhere from $50-$100, while the iPhone drops in price by $200-$250 – almost three times the amount!

You are so full of it, there isn’t a phone out there that has resale value even compared to iphone, I sold an iphone 4 200.00 iPhone 4S 350.00 try selling a galaxy s2 or galaxy nexus for anything now, ain’t happening!! I’m sorry your plastic phones can’t even resell against an old iPhone 3GS there still getting g 100.00 all day on Craigslist. Obviously an Android user. Get facts before posting not opinion.

      • Jon

        01/08/2013 at 1:31 am

Sorry but you’re very incorrect. I sold a factory unlocked iPhone 4S for 315, and sold a T-Mobile Galaxy S2 for 280. There are many people selling other android phones on craiglist, and at respectable prices. I like iPhones, but you’re just biased.

      • You're a fool

        01/18/2013 at 6:17 pm

The things is… First the nexus 4 isn’t plastic it’s Corning gorilla glass on both sides and the back is much nicer looking than any of the iphone releases… AND the nexus 4 sales at 300 starting out so it’s obviously not going to continue selling at that price. Iphones start around 700-800 new so it’s already depreciated more than the nexus 4 possibly could when you sell at 350…

      • Seriou7s

        02/05/2013 at 7:18 am

$700 for unlocked iPhone 4s a year ago. Sell it today for $400 (being generous) You just lost $300.

$350 for Galaxy Nexus Unlocked, sell it today for $300 (believe me, I’ve been trying to find them for cheap since the Nexus 4 is out, but the price isn’t budging) You lose $50

Which has the better resale value?

Or if You bought it on a carrier: $250 for Iphone 4s Sell for $400 (still being VERYYYY generous) You make $150.

Galaxy Nexus for $100 (which many were sold at once they hit carriers) Sell it for $300, you make $200.

        Nexus still wins.

Yes, Samsung phones lose value quickly because samsung makes a new phone every 6 months and they never support their old phones. But Google is still supporting their old phones. And when the Nexus 5 comes out, I know I can sell my nexus 4 for close to the same price as the 5 and basically get a free upgrade.

        • John

          02/05/2013 at 9:05 am

If you still looking for a Galaxy Nexus I’m willing to part with mine for 300$. I replaced the screen (Samsung did the work) about 3 months ago and its has no scratches. The body of the phone has a few scratches but nothing very noticeable. I’ve tried selling both my Galaxy S (vibrant) and my Galaxy Nexus on Kijiji with no luck.

this article honestly makes me laugh, i mean the Iphone is available on more carriers? Tough luck, is the US the entire world to you? what about the other 95% of the people on earth? What about the price? pay 750 dollars? or 300? sell for 200? or 500? how much money do you lose? 250 compared to 100? thats what i thought….. seriously apple is the biggest money wh@re in the world. I am a die hard Fandroid. But I agree with most of what’s being said here, except ecosystem and easier to use. I completely agree that it’s bull$h1t they didn’t put removable storage in. I completely agree that you get better support when you buy an Apple product. But, LTE may not be as true as you think. https://www.xda-developers.com/android/inactive-4g-chip-found-lurking-inside-the-nexus-4/

    Here’s a less-biased assessment of this article.

    1. iPhone 5 Has a Higher Capacity Than Nexus 4 — Half a point to iPhone 5 because you still pay for that higher capacity and the Nexus 4 will have higher capacity options in the future.

    2. iPhone 5 Has 4G LTE — HSPA+ is perfectly capable of delivering good speeds across most of the US, LTE drains battery faster and isn’t even widely available, and with most users still being subject to data caps, this is a wash.

    3. iPhone 5 Easier to Use than Nexus 4 — You’re joking, right? You really, honestly consider the iPhone 5 “easier to use” simply because it’s narrower? What about the differences in, you know, FUNCTION? Like, oh just for one example, the availability of different keyboards on Android? Apple still refuses to acknowledge that people want other options besides hunt-and-peck on a tiny screen. I used an iPhone for 3 years straight and came out absolutely HATING what a chore texting and typing was. Switching to the Nexus 4 and now I genuinely ENJOY texting people. Seamless integration with Google services? Google maps? Customizable user experience? On and on. Easier to use my ass. Point Nexus 4.

    4. iPhone 5 Has Better Support Than Nexus 4 — Fair enough. The fact that you can walk into an Apple store and have issues addressed is pretty great. (It will happen eventually with Google, though.) Point iPhone 5.

    5. iPhone 5 Available on More Carriers — But it’s also locked on contract if you don’t want to pay $600 for it. The Nexus 4 is $300 unlocked. To someone on a carrier that supports both, the better option is the Nexus 4 due to the non-contract flexibility, a feature which absolutely cannot be undervalued. Being VERY generous to the iPhone 5 we will give just half a point to the Nexus 4.

    6. iPhone 5 Lives in the Best Ecosystem — There are applications available for rooted and unrooted Android that do things I simply couldn’t do with my iPhone. I don’t give a crap that Apple has a 500 million apps if 495 million of them are worthless junk (which, surprise, they are). All major apps are mirrored across both ecosystems. As for hardware accessories and such, yes, the iPhone does better, but you can still get what you need for the Nexus 4 and things will only get better. Half a point for the iPhone 5.

    7. The iPhone 5 Will Hold its Resale Value — This is irrelevant and doesn’t make it a better phone. Being able to resell your phone is not a consideration most people make when buying a phone. This has nothing to do with what the “better” phone is.

Tally (according to the specially chosen criteria in this article):
    iPhone 5: 2
    Nexus 4: 1.5

Now, if we used criteria that actually assessed the phones according to the strengths of both (instead of simply picking on the weaknesses of the Nexus 4), this would be even closer if not in favor of the Nexus 4.

Here, here! There seem to be a lot of these articles that ignore how to reasonably compare these phones apples-to-apples. Nexus 4 16gb unlocked is $350. iPhone 5 16gb unlocked is $650. Is the iPhone 5 worth twice the money? I wouldn’t trade my Nexus 4 for an iPhone 5 straight up, let alone shell out another $300 for it. I’m a former iPhone user, and I’ll go with whoever gives the best bang for the buck without forcing me into a carrier subsidy situation – big win for Google.

I’ll grant that the Nexus 4 screen is a little too big for my tastes just because of the battery consumption, but I dig it when I’m reading a book or watching a video. It took Jelly Bean for Google to finally win me over, but I think they’re way out in front now compared with iOS. Google Now is killer – PopSci’s Innovation of the Year.

It’s just discussing strengths that the iPhone 5 has over the nexus 4. You’ll also notice there was a 7 reasons why nexus 4 is better than iPhone 5 article. I agree to all those points except the 3: Easier to use one it’s quite obvious the iphone is the easier one to use considering the fact that every thing is in one place and theres no choice in changing it, just the app dock and nothing more. While with android you have widgets the settings are much more complicated

And to all fandroid- people are alwasy gonna buuy iphones over you. Apple will always be more sucessfull. Go to a school do they have nexus’s or ipads-ipads! Why do we take it » The Nexus 4 is pretty amazing right? I was so excited for this phone that I called in sick for work, set up multiple browsers on auto refresh, and spent 6 hours with the most disappointing e-commerce experience of my life. It was all worth it in the end though, when I finally got through! Wrong! A couple days later I received an email letting me know that I canceled my order. Huh? When I contacted support, I was greeted by a friendly voice explaining that Google never makes mistakes, and it had to be my fault. I went back in forth with them for a day hoping that someone would help, or at least look into the issue. Well… I was met with more nice passive voices letting me know that I can definitely have a Nexus 4 in 6-7 weeks if I order it today. I am 27 years old, and I already miss the days when a company had to care about their customers.

    A little venting…

I always had Iphones and wanted to really move to android by buying the nexus.
I am terribly disappointed it let me down very much.
I use a lot of voice commands and iphone 5 just works not nexus 4 even spend 50 dollars worth on apps to get it working that is so much I wanted it to work.
In the end I am really fed up and pissed of!
Google I love the phone love the camera but voice commands not working for me is a big
down fall so much I am thinking of getting rid of this phone asp.
It just does not cut it@@
I can not defend a platform phone based on brand I know lots of people hate apple and their locked down platform but stuff just works end of.
I tested stuff and android fails I want it to win but it just can’t cope against siri or other functions. In the end I rather pay 200 more and have something working then not working or unreliable!

I’ll give you one thing, the support system. Apple have it down to a science with their apple store network…..if you live close to one.

On everything else you are comparing apples to oranges.

Yes, the 8 GB version is too small, but you get what you pay for. For 299 consumers will prefer to opt for smaller memory capacity and manage their data rather than being able to dump anything. Also, remember, this is a phone, not a tablet, so not everyone will be having 3 1 GB movies on their phone.

The beauty of the Nexus is the fact it is unlocked!! Have you ever considered how much you end up actually paying for the iphone over a two year contract? Crazy money. This is basically a “Higher Purchase” scheme.

LTE, not available for many preople worldwide, and how different is your life with a page loading in 1 second rather than 4? I for one do not care.

Resale value, this is an invalid assumption. In my opinion, until it is proved otherwise, that the Nexus 4 will retain it’s value more than the Iphone. Remember, a new unlocked iphone 16GB iphone is 649 vs a new unlocked nexus 4 16GB at 349.

Now when you compare those apples would you spend 300 extra for LTE and an in-store support network?

Okay, I do agree that iPhone 5 is better than Nexus 4. That’s not to say I thought this article was a great way of pointing out its strengths. But in all seriousness, why are we comparing a high end phone to a high-mid range phone? This comparison seems a little redundant to me. It took me a few minutes to get back on track with the writing of my own article “7 reasons why the Ferrari 458 is better than the Nissan 370Z” because I was so phased. I know they’re overdone, but I’d like to see you point out why iPhone 5 is better than Galaxy S3. You may have trouble doing it deviceively, but that’s why I’m not telling you 458 is better than Gallardo, because it’s hard.

    • Ritesh

      12/30/2012 at 12:28 pm

High-mid range phone?? Have you actually seen the Nexus 4 specs? Its absolutely top-end, better than the iPhone 5 in every department apart from LTE and storage capacity. International versions of almost all flagship phones do not have LTE anyway.

Lol you really don’t know youre specs do you? The Nexus 4 comes with a Snap dragon S4pro. Thats a quad core processor, clocking in at 1.5Ghz and 2GB of ram, whereas the iPhone 5 has a dual core processor and 1GB of ram. The GPU is an Adreno 320, which is up to par with the powervrsgx 5 used in the iphone and even ipads. Do a bit of research before you go around saying things.

Your right. I really shouldn’t go tossing around the term “Sure” like jellybeans on a playground should I?

Plus I don’t really think specs can make it a high end phone. If it feels like a toy, it’s mid range. If its a specced out toy it’s upper mid range. Like nexus 4. I’ve played with em, they feel like they were made by Ikea. I’m sorry if that offends you but it’s plasticky and gross. And with things optimized for iPhone 5 like Real Racing 3, what benefit is a beefy A15 processor anyway?

and calling it a toy i do not know where you even got to handle the nexus 4 but they are far from cheap made i am going to make this clear as i can these $$$$$$ signs does not make the product better just because you pay more for something does not mean it is the best on the market it also does not mean that its going to be the greatest thing you ever own when you buy apple for 700 bucks its just so you can say i have money to blow see look at my iphone 5 that is all it is the reason apple know’s they can sell it for that price is because one people look at the price and thing this thing has to be really worth it and 2 because people keep buying them so in i guess if you all keep supporting them buy paying higher prices every time then i guess we will be able to see the day when people are spending over a grand for a phone that does exactly the same as a nexus 4 for example

    12/19/2012 at 9:01 am

Nexus 4 does have LTE capabilities but it only works in certain countries that have the correct frequencies eg. Canada. This article is clearly horribly biased however that being said, I am a currently proud owner of the nexus 4 and i would still like an Iphone if given the chance because I find both companies have their pros and cons due to apple being around longer for apps making it the developers first choice and mirrored apps can suffer in the transition. This and that as in the future as more synchronicity of devices comes into play android will not be able to keep up due to it being partially based in java no matter how much faster their IC circuitry is. I stated that apple is full of pretentious A-holes that over charge for there apps, accessories, and phones. So if you like that then good for you…..drink the magic fruit punch…All andriod phones get flash player. Actually at this point, there’s a lot more pretentious a holes who use android then apple. Seems that as soon as someone make an OS switch it’s their goal to bash iOS. Well they’re both effective. They all do their job perfectly fine. I don’t work for the Genius Bar or anyone affiliated directly with apple. I work for London Drugs which sells all platforms, and I’m not a phone salesman at that. I have devices that run each OS so it doesn’t really matter to me. I just think it’s a big hilarious game between people who try to pick OS platforms apart. This article sucked, but it doesn’t mean apple does. Yeah they’re overpriced, they always have been. Since when has that hurt their sales? These guys all do what they do best, and they’re both fine. What I was really getting at with my comment was, apple doesn’t love you, google, Linux, LG whatever. So why defend them and insult your fellow man because they chose one phone over another? It’s childish. It’s unfortunate that hate for a company can so easily make one person trash another person for giving them their business.

  22. Adam

    01/13/2013 at 6:14 pm

Commenters have hit all the reasons why this comparison is off base, even if it is US-centric. Having the iPhone and Nexus side by side, neither phone is a slam dunk over the other. These seven “reasons” are biased preferences.

The Apple iPhone 5 is cheaper, but locks in a two year contract that adds up to about $2200-$2500.

iPhone has a faster processor, a smaller screen, more gadgets and accessories.

Google Nexus 4 is more expensive, but can work with a $30/month contract, adding up to less than half the cost of the iPhone over the first two years, plus you can pay month to month with no lock-in.

Nexus is larger and produces real HD video out to HDMI. Both do wireless video.

Nexus has wireless charging, Apple has yet another connector design.

iPhone does flash, Nexus does all other video formats.

Google software has functionality far ahead of Apple. Google Voice is an especially useful voicemail system including automatic email, voice to text translation, and sync’d with contacts, calendar, email and works with other apps like Wallet to replace credit cards and wireless or Internet payment, all without the limitations of iTunes.

Apple is behind in software and functionality. Apple is a closed, proprietary single vendor like IBM from the 80’s and 90’s. Google is an open world.

Google TV and third party video and cable TV channels all work. Apple limits TV and iTunes to its partners.

Both phones appeal to novice users out of the box, the Nexus continues to be appealing to advanced users and developers.

Once you create a Google account, it syncs all apps and mail, updates, it can be enable to see your other computers and tablets, and keep your files and your work in the Internet “cloud” so you don’t have to worry about backups or sync or copies or versions … and it just works.

I dislike what Apple did with Java to try to break Chrome, so I have no sense of disloyalty by trying other Google products. Three years ago, we had only Apple consumer electronics, now we have Google phones, tablets, laptops, TV and we rely upon the Google account for email, browsing, music, apps, games, news, shopping, payment, etc..

Here’s hoping Apple finds its way. They’ve spent the last two years gaining in stock price versus Google, but losing their direction and leadership to fall behind Google.

I’ve gone from thinking of Google as the way to make use of the Web without all the noise, irrelevance and immensity of it all, to now seeing Google as being the almost indispensable solution to just about everything I do with a computer, tablet or phone.

For the last ten years, it has been Apple taking great ideas (mp3 music players, smart phones, digital multi-touch interface tablets) and creating almost cliched “finally, it just works” revolutions. For the last two years or so, Google has gone from a technology for enthusiasts and search engine (and advertiser) for everyone, to being a (much) better selection of (equal or) better solutions than even the great stuff Apple offers.

I can only recommend to others that, if you’ve had an iPhone and you’re free to update to an iPhone 5 or a Nexus 4, move your phone number to a Nexus or other current model Android phone, give it a try and save some money while you gain the experience necessary to make a fair comparison for yourself.

  23. Zack

    01/15/2013 at 1:39 pm

shouldn’t even count the first “reason” it isn’t even valid, yeah sure the nexus 4 has 8gb for $299 and the iPhone 5 16gb at $350 (locked), but the nexus 4 is unlocked while the iPhone isn’t, and for the note the iPhone 5 unlocked is $650. Also the nexus 4 can be used on any GSM carrier world-wide (ATT or Tmobile for the USA).

This article was written by a apple shaped troll…

I’ve held a iPhone 5 in my hands and it felt like the edges needed to be filed down.

As for Apple’s support, it is sh*t. Back when I had a iPhone 3G my son pushed my external hard drive off of my desk and it smashed on the floor and never worked again. The only thing I never bothered to make another copy of was the music because it was all stored on my phone. When I asked Apple for support on how to pull my music from the phone they gave me the run around before finally admitting that there was no “official” way to pull the MP3’s back onto my computer… Not by iTunes not by Bluetooth, not by Wi-Fi, not by USB, not by USB mass storage OTG, not by Cloud service, the list goes on…

I also think iTunes is a terrible piece of software. This is because it takes way to much memory just to play an MP3, as poorly configured default settings, etc. If you change one check box to do with syncing you risk losing everything on you phone only to wait for it to sync everything all over again and that takes hours. It was very obtuse.

Long before my contract for the device was over Apple stopped providing the latest updates to the iPhone 3G and I lost access to app’s I had paid for because they required the latest OS.

In the end the iPhone 3G is a grate toy for kids and toddlers who don’t need to worry about good signal or sending files or recovering mp3’s. They just want to draw and have fun.

Would I buy an iPhone again? Yes but only if it were under 100$ and I would give it to my 2nd son who is only 22 months because it will suit his needs better than an Android/BlackBerry/WindowsPhone.

  27. James

    02/05/2013 at 11:43 am

    Nexus 4 *does* have LTE.
Nexus 4 has smaller storage, but there are more cloud-storage options available, and unlike the iCloud, U1, Box, DropBox, Drive, Skydrive, are all free.
Nexus 4 is ready to go on *any* network, just like the iPhone 5.

Resale value is going to fluctuate depending on the device. Gazelle is not the best metric, but that is a valid point, I suppose.

Best Ecosystem, Better Support, are both up for huge debate.
Apple’s ecosystem costs a lot more, while Android’s ecosystem is more universal
Same with support- Apple support will cost a lot more-

    And ease of use?
    Yeah, you’re totally right.

Apple’s big thing is making remedial technology..

Unfair and based reporting at its best, you forgot reason number 8: The iPhone is not better than the Nexus 4, in fact the iPhone is inferior to any Android handset running Gingerbread and above.

Sorry if this is a sore subject for you but you would sound a lot more intelligent, if you worked on your grammar and maybe did a spell check before posting your comments. Maybe even reading over your comment before posting.

        Just a suggestion.

Nice fanboying, if pretend my fingers are ultra small then I can pretend the disappointing size of then iphone5 is a feature. Who needs the best features when I can stick my fingers in my ears and repeat apple buzzwords like ‘robust ecosystem’?

I think this is called “grasping at straws”. Sorry, but the Nexus 4 is a spectacular phone at a fraction of the price of an iPhone 5.

And what really kills the iPhone is the serious limits on third party apps and customizability Apple imposes. By installing a simple launcher, I turned Android phones into really easy-to-use phones for my parents. For myself, the default launcher or Apex launcher is so much more effective than Apple’s tedious home screen. That alone caused me to switch from iPhone to Android a couple of years ago, and iPhone has basically not improved since.

One simple reason why the Nexus is way better is the possibility of compiling alternative versions of OS and kernel. Ever tried ask Apple for the source code of iOS? Period. So to say, with a decent linaro and bionioc improved ROM plus kernel this thing just flies. The screen of the Nexus 4 looks really, really ugly when on stock – but with a kernel that supports RGB and gamma control and a little tweaking with it to fit your personal taste and screen it’s the most stunning display i’ve ever seen on any mobile device. Even those iphone5 users that i showed pictures on that screen where truly amazed of how contrasty and colorful it is compared to their washed out retina display colors (which is in fact of course just an IPS display too).
So yes, for a consumer who never digs deeper into his device and just uses stock the iphone might have its benefits. But as soon as you start to enter the world of open source and customization – which is purely impossible on an ios device – you’ll be blown away.

Okay all out when you buy apple you are buying the name not the hardware when you buy a nexus 4 you are buying just above the cost of making the phone so the extra 300 you are spending is to just say that you own an apple but when you compare prices with what you get nexus beats out by far
