Americans Want Smart Phones But Are Confused About Why

Published

on

palm-pre-webosjpg Best Buy Mobile did a survey. Survey says Americans have been bitten by the smart phone bug. Survey also says that there is confusion among those who want them. Sampling 1000 adults over 18 the information is interesting as it points to some customer confusion and price resistance, but shows that the sexy marketing is having an effect. Only 1 in 5 of the survey respondents owned a smart phone and a sizeable portion said they planned to make a purchase in the next year. But 47 percent said they were confused about smart phones.

The survey is certainly interesting and I think it indicates a triumph of marketing when you’ve attracted folks to your product even as they are confused by it.

Interesting side note. It is time for my wife to get a new phone. She has never, ever been attracted to anything but a non-smart phone (dumb phone?). She just never saw the need. That said, she’s become attracted to the Palm Pre, not for the apps, not because of its capabilities, but because of how it feels in her hand. She likes the size and the look of the device. She’s had a chance to play with one as a friend has one. Now she’s in rationalization mode trying to figure out why she needs something with all those features. You know she’s hooked when she says things like, ““we’ll, if I ever need that feature, I’ll have it for the future.”

    LOL @ your wife’s justifications.

I’ve not read the report just yet, but does it elaborate on WHY there is confusion or rather, what that confusion is?

Are they confused over why they need the features, or what the benefits are?
