Android 4.4 KitKat Leaked Images Reveal iOS 7-Inspired Flattened UI

Published

on

Leaked images of what is claimed to be a phone running Android 4.4 KitKat have been revealed, and they show off a new design for the upcoming Android version that’s more flattened out than previous builds, hinting to the possibility that Google may have taken a page out of Apple’s iOS 7 book. Nonetheless, the images show off some of the redesigned stock apps and their new look.

One of the biggest changes is the look of the dock, which get rid of the detail and shadows in favor of a simple, flat look. Many of the app icons retain their overall design for the most part, except for the Messaging app, which got rid of its smiley face emoticon in favor of a simpler speech bubble with lines in it representing text.

The phone dialer has also been redesigned, with a new blue and white theme, with the flattened Call button at the bottom. The overall look hasn’t changed significantly, though — certainly not a drastic change that iOS 7 was.

Unfortunately, the leaked images don’t reveal any new features in Android 4.4 KitKat, but the redesign definitely gives us hope that this version will see some big changes over Jelly Bean. While we expected Android 5.0 to be the next version of Google’s mobile platform, the company seems adamant to stay on 4.X for now, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see a handful of new features arrive with the new update.

In fact, the radical redesign of Android 4.4 KitKat could mean that Android 5.0 will be an even bigger update than we might have originally expected, especially since X.0 updates are usually the biggest for software developers and companies. However, we’re taking these leaked images with a grain of salt, as they could easily be fakes, but the design easily seems like something Google would do, so we wouldn’t be surprised if these were real.

Android 4.4 KitKat was officially announced earlier this month by Google, and it’s rumored that the update will officially hit the public starting on October 14, alongside the launch of the rumored Nexus 5, which has also been heavily-rumored for the past couple of months. The update will most likely hit newer Nexus devices, and will eventually come to other Android devices as manufacturers and carriers approve it.

Really? SERIOUSLY hope not!! Even mentionaning iOS is a slap in the face to an android lover and a white holo dialing pad?? Really android donu not know most search for everything inverted cuz your still stuck on stupid! Higher the right people, like,jrummy,qbking77,shabbypenguine,th3bill,faux,franco and many more that would take android way past 74% of the market.

Besides that I can’t spell I see the writer is bias(not a put down, that’s my opinion). Please GTBM, if such a big and possible true story is to be told have 2 writers do it,not one that (but focuses on iOS)as the main or only writer. No offence Craig(also my name)

Then don’t buy 3rd party manufacturer in future, buy Nexus and you will never experience this problem.

Try being in Samsung’s shoes, and create an update for a phone 1 generation behind. Besides there’s always custom ROM to go for, to not flash one is an epic fail.

Based in Indiana, Craig covers a variety of mobile technology topics, but focuses on iOS and the jailbreaking scene. Craig has absolutely no idea what android looks like. He even thinks the new UI of android was based on IOS. What Graig doesn’t know is that it is almost the same as it was 4 version ago. But since Graig is an Apple FanBoi he actually thinks it’s based on iOS 7. And being a good Apple Fanboi he is he doesn’t check any facts and just believes what other apple fanbois are telling him. You can harress Graig on Twitter or shoot him an email at [email protected].

lol, my thoughts exactly. You would think that somebody who is at least attempting to make a run at being a real writer wouldn’t write such uneducated garbage.

Wow. Taking a page out of iOS 7 with the flattened design? Have you never seen Windows 8? Also, I’m pretty sure this new Android UI was in development before iOS 7 was released. Also, the HTC One has similar flat-style icons.

And before iOS 7 was released, it wasn’t in development?

What a dope. The flat iOS 7 inspired OS from google was introduced in 4.0. What you are seeing is holo light vs holo dark. Basically an inverted app that has been in the developers tool box in eclipse for 16 months. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Nice try though.

those icons are old as hell from the chrome web store. Why are they now saying its ios7 like? so ignorant…

How does one begin a critique of the most ignorant tech based piece of work that I have had the displeasure of experiencing?

Dear sir, if you care to write about android, it may be in your best interest to at least try to understand what you are saying. Nothing in those images is any “flatter” than the 4.3 stock build I have right now. The dock in those images looks no different than what it looks like right now.
Additionally, if you state that it isn’t a drastic change in your third paragraph, it might be better if two paragraphs later you didn’t refer to it as a “radical redesign”. Just saying, if you want to be a professional writer, you should probably write and research like one.

Yeah, You’re an iOS user. Don’t claim that new 4.4 is inspired by iOS 7… How do people get jobs like this? Can I have one? I’m good at making things up also.

Look at Android 4.0… When was this released?

How about iOS 7’s new notification system, control center, slide unlock screen? Where are you at now?

    Pathetic.

Writer, do you really think that Android 4.4 design was inspired by iOS7? Do you think the Android team developed Android 4.4 in a small time frame following the iOS7 release or leaked images?? You are ignorant. Software has probably been in development probably for the past year and way before iOS7 was announced. Also the flat design in iOS7 was inspired by Android Holo theme which was available during Android 4.0 launch. Outside of iOS7 copying the flat design holo inspired theme in Android, iOS7 also managed to copy the notifications drop down menu from Android not to mention the multitask scrollable app preview menu including swipe to kill app.

Yea I have to agree with a lot of other users here, this is not an iOS 7 inspired interface at all. If anything iOS7 has been inspired from Android. Just take a look at the toggle additions and double drop down/pull up menus, and swiping screens etc.. who invented all of this… ANDROID.

Hey Craig, would you change at least the title? It doesn’t make any sense to most people, and it angers many

For those people that say Android 4.4 Kit Kat came from IOS7 or inspired by IOS7 those people did not have an Android phone before. Because clearly IOS7 is and Android inspired UI. For those who disagree compare the previous IOS to previous android models Jelly Bean => Froyo and you will be shock. That you should have switch to android ban wagon a long time ago.

Flattened new design definitely yes. But not inspired from iOS7 most of these icons have been in existence since a long time.
