Another Perk From Google+: Unlimited Picasa Photo Storage

With Facebook users accustomed to uploading photos to their hearts’ content, Google wants their new social networking alternative, Google+, to allow them to do the same. With the new venture integrated with Picasa photo sharing, Picasa users have some good news. Once they get into Google+ (betas are slowly rolling out) they will essentially have unlimited photo uploads for their Picasa albums.

As detailed in the Picasa FAQ, the new Picasa storage guidelines breaks down like this:

If you are a Google+ member:

• photos and videos will not count toward your 1GB limit
• the exceptions to this are photos up to 2048×2048 pixels and videos up to 15 minutes
• all photos you upload to Google+ will be automatically resized to 2048×2048 (all Google+ photos are unlimited)
• all photos you upload directly to Picasa that are over 2048×2048 will count towards your 1GB.
• if you exceed your free 1GB, all large photos (over the size limit) will be downsized to 2048×2048

If you aren’t a Google+ member:

• photos up to 800 x 800 pixels and videos up to 15 minutes won’t count towards your free storage
• all photos uploaded over the free size limit will count towards your 1 GB of free storage. When you reach your storage limit, any new photos you upload to Picasa Web larger than the free size limit will be automatically resized to 800 pixels (on their longest edge)

So being a Google+ member has its perks. Provided you aren’t uploading gargantuan photos and lengthy videos (most will easily be under that) all of your Google photo uploading will be on the house.
