Apple: It Will Cost You $50 To Not See Your Reflection In Your Screen

Published

on

Apple is now offering those interested in the 15 inch MacBook an option for a matte screen. It will set you back $50. That’s right. In order to view your screen without seeing your reflection in a glossy screen, it will cost you $50. I know I rant on and on about glossy screens and glossy cases, but to me it is really a question of aesthetics.   I’ve never understood why you would create a beautiful looking piece of hardware (and I’m not just talking Apple here, many others are equally guilty) that is tough to view and attracts fingerprints like crazy.

I just don’t get it.

It’s the same screen with an extra coating over it, so I don’t see why that shouldn’t cost extra. As for why they do glossy in the first place, they use glass displays. They’re strong and recyclable, but also glossy by nature. It’s a trade-off, but I don’t think it’s an unreasonable one. Hell, I’m stuck with a big glass CRT monitor at work, so I’d gladly welcome a glass LCD display.

I don’t care how you justify it, glossy screens suck. I won’t even consider buying a system with a glossy screen.

As for the durable, I guess I take good enough care of my systems despite heavy use that I don’t have to worry about it… well, that and what are warranties for, right?

GT2L: You don’t like glossy, that’s perfectly understandable. But I have to use a variety of glossy and matte, and I see the trade-offs going both ways. Of course, I see the whole world through glass anyway, so what does another piece of glass matter to me?

I have nearly blind vision, and I’ve worn glasses for 20-some years now. My opinion is just that I deal with enough glare-induced headaches why add to the stress?

Anyway, I wasn’t ragging on glossy because I don’t think it should be an option at all. I just appreciate a choice, and I don’t think that particular preference should cost me.

Alas, I’ll never own a MacBook at all, so I guess it doesn’t really affect me anyway, lol. Just don’t want other OEM’s getting any bad ideas is all.
