Apple To Place Second to Amazon in Race for Cloud Music Storage
Let’s call it short memories. The Interweb is jumping up and down this afternoon reporting and re-reporting a Reuters story that Apple will beat Google to the punch in terms of offering a cloud based music streaming service. At least that’s what the headlines and the leads all say. Scroll down the story a bit and you see mention of Amazon’s move several weeks or so ago to launch its own cloud music streaming service for Android phones and through browsers everywhere. Yeah, Amazon got the music labels upset and they are now negotiating, but that was obviously a part of Amazon’s strategy to begin with.
Regardless of how those with short memories are playing this, the news from Reuters is that Apple is apparently ready to go with its online streaming service, supposedly using that big data farm in North Carolina, and that Google seems to be stalled a bit in negotiations with the music labels.

Frankly I am not sure why people are not jumping up and down about the BS that the record companies have the right to stop people from streaming music they own.
Though I’m sure if you dig into the fine print of digital music you’ll find you don’t own it but only a license to listen to it as the music companies see fit.
That too – people should be jumping up and down about.
In any event, if I want to digitize the 200 or so CDs I own and put them in the cloud and then stream them back to myself to listen to for some reason, then who are they to tell me I can’t. Or, more pointedly, that a company does not have the right to provide me the service??
Of course in the end, if this becomes popular, then it is a fairly inane waste of bandwidth to be constantly streaming everyone’s music collection to them all the time.
