Apple TV Adds Disney Junior and MLS. Here’s How to Hide Them

Published

on

Apple TV received its special version of the iOS 7 update designed for Apple TV’s interface and the set-top box now sports two new channel options. Apple TV users can load up the Disney Junior channel and the MLS or Major League Soccer channel.

These new additions continue the aggressive improvements that Apple started earlier this year when two previous updates brought some new channels. The Apple TV home screen looks pretty crowded these days, leaving some to wonder if Apple will change the user-interface, adding iOS-style folders or a new subject-based tabbed interface.

MLS

The MLS channel app includes a number of useful items like…

To subscribe the user pays only $24.99 making it one of the most affordable subscriptions for a major professional sport. The fee covers the Apple TV and the free iPad/iPhone app.

Soccer doesn’t get as much support in the United States, but there’s a passionate fan base that will love watching games on Apple TV.

Disney Junior

Disney Junior fans can watch content similar to what’s available on the Disney and Disney XD channels added earlier this year, along with Vevo music video channel, The Weather Channel and the Smithsonian channel.

To use the Disney channels, users must enter their TV provider credentials, which severely limits the usefulness of the apps. Most of the on-demand content available through the Apple TV channel already shows up on pay TV on-demand services. This only benefits Apple TV users who connect the box to another TV not wired to the TV service.

We wish Apple would help us cut the cord with content not connected to a TV subscription service, like DirecTV, Charter and others.

How to Customize Apple TV Channels

If the list crowds out what a user wants to see at the top of the screen, rearrange the apps much like one would in iOS. Press and hold on the select key in the center of the aluminum Apple TV remote. Then move the apps around the screen. Users can also hide apps they will never use in the Settings app. Select General, Parental Controls and then scroll down to the channel list and select all the channels you want to hide.

One wonders how presumably smart people so screw up so badly. Surely, they test these “improvements.” Perhaps the problem lies in quality control of the phones and iPads. Aren’t they put together in hundreds of factories in several Asian countries?

Tom, while the devices are assembled overseas all of the software is written in California.
