AT&T Galaxy S2 Android 4.0.4 Update Now Available

While the Samsung Galaxy S2 appears ready to get a Jelly Bean update sometime in the near future, at least one carrier is rolling out another Ice Cream Sandwich update before it arrives as tonight, the AT&T Galaxy S2 Android 4.0.4 update became available Over-the-Air for owners of the aging device.

AT&T announced tonight that an update is now available to Galaxy S2 owners who are already running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The update is available Over-the-Air through the device’s settings right now and quite possibly, through Samsung Kies as well.

Tonight’s update, according to XDA-Developers forum, takes the AT&T Galaxy S2 to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. AT&T’s website does not list the version of the update or the build though it looks to be

Previously, the AT&T Galaxy S2 had been running on Android 4.0.3, the version. The update comes about six months after AT&T upgraded the Galaxy S2 with Ice Cream Sandwich, an update that rolled out all the way back in June of this year. That update was Android 4.0.3 as opposed to Android 4.0.4.

The AT&T Galaxy S2 Android 4.0.4 update is now available.

The update is an extremely minor update and according to AT&T, these are the changes:

  • Improves the AT&T branded application launch process
  • An EAS/Office 365 security pop-up fix
  • An update to all Google branded applications

It’s certainly not Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but it looks like it could tackle some issues that Galaxy S2 owners have been dealing with. Again, it appears that only those who are running Android 4.0 are going to be able to see this update and those that are still on Gingerbread won’t see a prompt.

AT&T still hasn’t announced any kind of a roll out date for the Galaxy S2’s likely next big update, Android 4.1, an update that Samsung promised for the device at some point in the future. Thus far, the only clue that AT&T Galaxy S2 owners have is the fact that Rogers, AT&T’s Canadian counterpart, will be rolling out the Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean update in late January. No specific date was specified.

AT&T and Rogers typically roll out their updates around the same time so it could be that the AT&T Galaxy S2 gets its Jelly Bean update in late January as well.

Try display settings. There is an option called “display battery percentage”

After update mine was checked but didnt show the percentage until i re-toggled it.

david, yes, my phone has shut down twice and I had to remove the battery in order to fix it! Anyone know why?

Three lockups since update yesterday. Complete black screen and no other sign of life except faint flash of back lights when pressing power. Had to hold down power button for a long time and eventually powers back on. Never know when it happens until I look at the phone so I am possibly missing calls, alarms, texts, etc.

      David,

My wife and I both have AT&T GS-II and both phones have turned off and needed to remove/replace the battery to restart… Hope they update the update to fix that!

Unfortunately I can’t afford to wait for the update to the update .Rooting the phone prevents the phone from shutting down but then the camera doesn’t work properly . I just went back to the older version

I upgraded and my battery life literally started dropping while I watched. It’s awful. I don’t know what is causing the drain but I had to pop in a spare battery and a short time later it’s already gone down 8%

In the same boat. My phone keeps shutting down as soon as am done with a long phone call. the whole point of not rooting is to have something stable and to not run into such issues.

Same here. Updated about 5 days ago had about 5 random shutdown and a couple of times the battery was drained in few hours. I want to go back to 4.0.3. Anybody knows how?

You have to connect your phone to your PC via the USB cable you use to charge the battery. Then download and install samsung kies to your PC. Next download Samsung Odin then the stock 4.0.3 firmware file over at xda developers forums. Once you do all that you flash the stock firmware using Odin to get back to the previous before the nasty update.

I’ve had at least 7 shut-downs per day since I updated on Wednesday. I have no idea that its off until I check my phone, so I’ve definitely missed alarms and calls.

Update fixed a few issues I was having with GPS, but has made my phone useless. My battery now dies within a couple hours of non use.

I haven’t noticed much of a battery drain however, the random freezes have happened several times after the update. Have to do a battery pull each time as the screen went black and unresponsive.

Same issue here, my phone now randomly turns itself off without me knowing and I’m missing calls/txts. Come on ATT… How do I downgrade back to 4.0.3?

    • Jeff

      01/20/2013 at 5:43 am

To get back to 4.0.3 you have to flash the stock firmware using Samsung’s Odin. You can download the stock firmware file from the xda developer website.

Well I rooted my wife’s phone and installed Jellybam. No more problems, and she’s enjoying all the new features of the latest devices she’s been seeing in TV commercials. Google Now, Touch Transfer etc. AT&T needs to wake up. BTW they were real quick about deleting the links I posted to Jellybam and how to root your phone, wish they could use that much attention on fixing the issue at hand.

I haaaaate this update so much. Since I updated my phone its at full battery and randomly shuts off for no reason so I have to take out the battery to even get it to turn back on then when I do my battery is in the red percentage its starting to make me so mad I don’t even want this update anymore. My phone never shut off randomly before but now I’m starting to hate my phone.

I have the same issue. Definitely started after the latest update. I spoke with ATT. They either did not know or did not acknowledge the problem. In fact, they suggested I upgrade to a different phone (also extending my contract that way). May be more people should call and complain so they take notice. It might help all of us. I used to like the phone except for the short battery life. Now, it is just worse because the battery shows active percentage (between 40 and 93%) at different times the freeze happened but I keep missing phone calls and texts. If this is not bad, I do not know what is.

Besides, I have always wondered, does any one know why when we sign a contract for two years is the phone warranty only for the first? Should they both not be equal? If there is a class action, I will join in.

I too did the annoying update and phone immediately started shutting down on me randomly. Battery life is terrible with this new update. I called AT&T and complained and they sent me another phone with the update installed, same problem still shuts down randomly and battery life is less than a day. I wish they would find a fix for that awful update.

Same issue with my wife’s phone. Random shut down, and battery drain. Mine is rooted with custom rom (Jellybam 4.1.2) so no issues here. Its definately that new update. Thinking of rooting her phone. Its sad that rom developers are doing a better job.

I updated mine, and like most I have had nothing but problems. Since my phone is no longer under warranty, I let my son loose on it. He rooted the phone and put Jellybean 4.2.1 with the custom rom on it and I couldn’t be happier. If your phone is out of warranty and you want to fix the ATT bug and improve your phone, root it!

I went through the update and got a few random shutdowns. It seems to be working okay for now. My battery is shite anyway so I haven’t noticed a change is drainage. If you root your phone with the update installed, it will fix the shutdowns BUT then the camera and youtube app will malfunction (as meantioned above). The only true way to fix (since AshiT&T isn’t doing anything about it) it is to either go back to 4.0.3 by flashing the stock firmware in odin OR flash a custom ROM in ClockWorkMod Recovery and use it in place of the stock ROM.

I had this problem in the summer (random shut down, battery drain) after I upgraded to ICS and again after this upgrade. Doing a factory reset seems to have fixed the problem, but it was a pain to back everything up beforehand.

I HAVE A FIX FOR THIS UPDATE
In order to stop the random shut offs and battery drains, you will need to either A) keep it plugged in for 24-48 hours or B) root your phone. If you go with the first choice, it still may shut off a time or 2 which was fixable on my Galaxy s2 by removing the battery for 30 seconds. If you go with the latter choice of rooting, you will notice that the camera malfunctions. This is fixed by flashing the siyah kernel v5.1 in CWM Recovery once rooted. You must flash v5.1.1 of the syiah kernel in order for everything to work with the 4.0.4 update, as this version was made to be compatible with the update, no other version! The siyah v5.1 kernel is available at the XDA Developers forums. Hopes this helps some of you.

Don’t install this update. You MUST skip this update to avoid random freezes and shutdowns. It has nothing to with apps or other settings and resetting the phone will not work, it is DEFINITELY this version of Android that breaks that Galaxy S2.
