Everyone is different. Some will surely give their kids an old phone, a handy-down, while others will want to choose something on the cheaper side of Android. It’s all a personal preference. Our list below mostly includes some inexpensive options, tips to keep them safe, and other information for parents.

Most popular smartphones are really expensive. The Galaxy S7 is typically over $700 new, and many other phones have a similar price tag. That is a lot of money to spend on a phone that may get lost, stolen, or damaged by kids.

If you’re ready to get a child their first phone, get something affordable. A phone with decent specs, a good design and camera, but a manageable price. There are plenty of cheap Android phones that aren’t terrible, which is what we’d recommend. Then, once they show some responsibility, or treat it well, a better phone can be an option next year. Don’t forget to add a password to the Google Play Store for app purchases.

Some unknown brands like Kurio offered Android smartphones made for kids in the past, but they never sold very well. As a result it’s almost impossible to find. It was loaded with kid-friendly apps, parent controls, and other things. Considering that’s no longer an option, our slideshow below is a well-rounded list of great phones that won’t break the bank. Everything from small screens (and a low price) to a huge screen for the gamer in your family. We have it all and more below.

Moto G4 (or G4 Play)

Moto G4 (or G4 Play)

When it comes to choosing a smartphone for your kids you want a good phone that isn't expensive. Something that will work great, take good photos, get decent battery life and be enjoyable. It's also a good idea to only consider phones with a microSD slot. Because you can bet they'll be installing tons of apps, games, or downloading music.

The first phone that comes to mind (and what my daughter uses) is the Moto G4. It's affordable, works good, and lasts plenty long. There's even a "Plus" model with a fingerprint scanner for added security and peace of mind.

The Moto G4 has a 5.5-inch 1080p HD display, a fast 8-core processor with 2-3GB of RAM, plenty of storage and a micro-SD card. It has a good 13 megapixel camera, and even a front-facing flash for those selfie photos and Snapchat videos.

You can grab the G4 starting at $179 on sale from Motorola. It's also SIM unlocked, so take it to any carrier. Alternatively, for those REALLY on a budget get the Moto G4 Play for $85.
It's not the biggest or the best, but the Moto G line has consistently made the top of our list for the best budget phone. Offering an all-around decent package for a low price. It's also good enough that kids won't feel left out if their friends have an iPhone.
