The best diabetes apps that we’ve found will help you monitor what you are eating so that you can control blood sugar by what you eat. We also share essential diabetes apps that can track your blood sugar and alert you to what is wrong.

If you are looking for diabetes apps for your child or for a friend or family member you may want to know more about how this works.

In the video below Scott Hanselman shares how he uses a diabetes pump and how he uses a continuous glucose meter to constantly monitor his blood sugar level. While showing this Hanselman uses an airplane analogy to explain blood sugar monitoring.

If you want a better understanding of diabetes accessories and where the technology is going, check out Hanselman’s overview of diabetes technology last year  to see where the hardware and software are, and where they are going.

“This has surely saved my daughter’s life several times!”

One of the best Diabetes apps we’ve found connects with a Dexcom Glucose Monitor to see blood sugar levels on a phone or smart watch. Amanda Hoover shares how this helps her daughter.

“Our 12 year old daughter has an insulin pump that is tubeless so she wears a pod that communicates to the PDM (Personal Diabetes Manager aka the glucose meter).” she explains, “You add in the amount of carbs and it will tell you how much insulin to give.”

With this technology she is also able to monitor her daughter’s blood sugar levels remotely. Hoover says, “She also has a Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitor with Share. This monitors her blood sugars through a site that we change weekly (sometimes longer), this updates every 5 minutes and is usually within 20 ml of her actual blood sugar. The CGM communicates her blood sugar numbers to a cell phone through the Share app!”

Using the Dexcom follow app, Hoover is able to see what her daughter’s blood sugar levels are — including if the levels are even, or rising or dropping rapidly.

Hoover is upbeat the system telling Gotta Be Mobile, “This has surely saved my daughter’s life several times!”

In late 2015 the family added a Pebble watch to their daughter’s diabetes technology which shows her blood sugar levels on her wrist so that she can check them without taking a phone out in class. If the levels are high or low the watch vibrates to let her know. Hoover and her husband can also send her text messages that show up on the watch so she can get help with what to do.

These are the best diabetes apps for 2018. They will help you track your diabetes and manage it better by counting carbs and making smarter decisions. Some of these require special meters and pumps but there are also diabetes apps that you can use without changing how you treat diabetes.

The PredictBGL App also does the same thing, but unlike MySugr, it is designed for people with T1 diabetes. PredictBGL also includes LIVE dexcom data, whereas MySugr is delayed by at least 3 hours, making it far less useful.

As a Type 1 diabetic, the technology available can be a god-send in monitoring and anticipating sugar highs and lows. The CGM is an integral part of a management and predictive program. Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover CGM products so us seniors are left to find out our glucose levels after the fact.

How the hell did you decide which apps to review and rate? There are far better apps than those you choose… As a type 1 diabetic I would recommend Diabetes:M, it’s far better than all of those (maybe without mysugr). Please review more apps before writing such posts … It’s just hilarious to say those are “the best”.

I just wanted to let you know about an app that I use and love. The app is called “Diabetes:M”. It is free and has helped me manage my diabetes. I am a Type 1. It lets you log carbs, insulin, etc. and you can send all of the info from it by e-mail to your provider. It has graphs and charts that help out a lot as well. Hope this helps someone else as much as it has helped me. Thanks.

A great app that has many features is Wellocity Health. It allows you to track blood glucose, carb counting, weight, medication, exercise, and much more! It’s great if you have other health conditions too like hypertension. There is also educational material if you ever feel like reading more about diabetes. It’s free on the app store!
