Brad Linder Reviews the Asus Eee PC 1005PE Netbook

angle3Brad Linder of Liliputing has reviewed the Asus Eee PC 1005PE Netbook, the first Pine Trail Netbook on the market,  and I think my theory about the evolution of Netbooks is about to be confirmed. Brad flat out says that if you own one of the earlier siblings, battery life is about the only real reason to upgrade, even with the move to the Pine Trail platform.

Brad gives the unit a thorough once over, likes what he sees with the keyboard and that 10 hour or so battery life (advertised at 14hours), and generally says that with the $370 price tag, it is a good buy if this is your market. But, his benchmarks prove his point that Pine Trail is more about power savings than it is about increased performance.

Oh, and as to my theory? We really won’t be seeing any big innovations in the Netbook market. They are what they are, and we’ll see battery life improvements, perhaps a teensy bit of performance boost down the line, different trackpads (none of which please), touch screens, etc… But the bottom line to my theory is that Netbooks are what they are and it is all tinkering at the margins from here on out. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. Just what it is.
