BumpTop Desktop Getting Closer?

Published

on

Maybe all good things come to those who wait. I’ve been interested in the BumpTop Desktop ever since it came across my radar awhile ago. I see that you can now sign up for the closed Beta, which I’ve done, so here’s hoping. What intrigues me about this is the desktop metaphor which I think would work very well for Tablet PCs and touch devices. At least if you keep your virtual and real desktops as cluttered as I do. Here’s hoping this moves forward soon as I think once we see multi-touch in Windows 7 that BumpTop could become very, very interesting as a desktop metaphor. Check out the video for the possibilities.

That is just superb. As long as it doesn’t bog down the system I want it!

Warner, do you have any invitations to give out? This looks very nice.

    Steve,

I haven’t been accepted into the beta yet. If I do get lucky and have extras I’ll let folks know.

    This is absolutely fascinating.

It looks like a fun way to use a desktop. Maybe they can add a recycle bin in which we can “throw” crumpled files into ; ).

This would offer the user so much more control in tablet mode!

    Keep us posted!

Wow… I could really use this concept. I hope this would work on portable media like flash/jump drives as well, and for folders, files, drives and more.

So, this would be useful…for what exactly?

This is actually available right now – with a somewhat more limited option list when it comes to sorting the piles – “Real Desktop”:

But all the bouncy physics are there. A 3d room metaphor. Tossing files and folders around. Creative clutter and piles. …Three different versions. One is free and fully potent enough to give you a sense of it.

I’ve played with the full version off and on. Very cool…at least at first. After a while I start missing the straightforward – if boring – layout of the customary desktop.

Still, the increased manipulation capabilities (gestures, more context-menu options) and tablet-friendly nature of the BumpTop might drive it home. Like you, Warner, I’m intrigued and will be watching.
