16 Common OS X El Capitan Problems & How to Fix Them

Published

on

The OS X El Capitan update for Apple computers adds a collection of incredible new features to Macs. This update also brings problems and issues as well. After monitoring complaints from users, we want to show you how to fix the most common OS X El Capitan problems on your MacBook, iMac and other Apple computers.

We’ll look at problems that continue to frustrate users in 2016, including a OS X 10.11.5 problem that is especially frustrating for iTunes 12.4.1 users that listen to albums with shorter tracks on Apple Music.

Originally announced in June 2015, the OS X El Capitan release arrived at the end of September after months of beta tests for developers and for the general public. This guide will help you fix OS X El Capitan problems on versions including OS X 10.11.2.

For all the good features that OS X 10.11 brings to users, there are also some issues and bugs.

We are seeing some users report OS X El Capitan problems in forums, on social media and directly to Apple in hopes of a quick fix. It’s not a shock to see OS X 10.11 problems appearing as Macbook owners use the new software more.

If you listen to tracks shorter than 60 seconds on iTunes 12.4.1 on OS X 10.11.5 using Apple Music the next track will not play. The odds are good that you will need to update to iTunes 12.4.x or OS X 10.11.6 to fix this when updates arrive.

OS X El Capitan Updates

Apple released OS X 10.11.1 and OS X 10.11.2 in late 2015 to deliver fixes for common OS X El Capitan problems, and they did offer some relief to users. If you are suffering from WiFi issues and other OS X 10.11 problems you should try upgrading to the current version.

In late December 2015 Apple offered a test version of OS X 10.11.3 to users, and another beta of this software appeared during early January 2016. There is no list of new features and fixes in the OS X 10.11.3 update, which is usually a good sign that the focus is on fixing problems.

Apple also debuted the OS X 10.11.4 update in mid-January as part of a public beta that includes new features like Live Photo viewing, password protection in Notes, similar to the new iOS 9.3 features.

Read on for a list of common OS X El Capitan problems that you can fix on your own without a trip to the genius bar. Some of these are common Mac problems that happen after a major update, while others are tied specifically to OS X El Capitan.

How to Fix OS X El Capitan Installation Problems

We have not seen many OS X El Capitan installation problems that are widespread, but we did run into issues on one of our MacBooks. The OS X 10.11.1 update includes installer reliability fixes, so you should run into fewer issues.

If the computer restarts after what you assumed was an installation, but it is still running OS X Yosemite, the first thing to try is running the OS X El Capitan installer again.

If you are stuck on a gray screen during the OS X El Capitan installation you can try to simply wait it out, which works for some users. If that fails you may need to try booting into safe mode. Use these three steps from Apple.

  1. Start or restart your Mac.
  2. Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.
  3. Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen

This may get you into your Mac. If this fails you may need to restore a backup from Time Machine and try installing again. Or you can try a clean install.

How to Fix OS X El Capitan 10.11.4 Freezing Problems

One of the biggest OS X El Capitan problems to affect users in 2016 is a OS X 10.11.4 freezing problem that mainly effects the 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina from 2015.

On the MacRumors Forums many users complain that the MacBook randomly freezes while running OS X 10.11.4. You can use the directions in the link above to see if you are impacted by this issue, or if you are just experiencing random issues.

If this happens to you, you will need to hold down the power button to force a restart. This is only a temporary fix. If it happens to you, the next step should be to install OS X 10.11.5. This small update fixes the problem for most users.

Fix OS X El Capitan Microsoft Office 2016 Problems

Since the OS X El Capitan release date we’ve heard from many users with problems using Microsoft Office 2016 on OS X El Capitan.

Thankfully there is now a simple solution. Install the OS X 10.11.1 update (or later updates) that is free for all users and available now. This will fix your OS X El Capitan Office 2016 issues.

At this stage it is also

How to Fix Slow OS X El Capitan Performance

Some users will see slow OS X El Capitan performance after upgrading, especially on an old Mac. This could be due to the need for more Memory or it could be that you need to free up disk space. You may also need to do a little housecleaning.

If everything is slow, including what you type appearing on screen, restart your Mac. Click on the Apple, then on Restart and wait for this process to finish. You may need to close apps and choose to save something before it completes.

The next thing to check is to see how much memory (RAM) your Mac has and if you can upgrade it. On many older macs you can upgrade RAM to make the computer run faster, but on newer models this is not the case.

On your Mac, click on the Apple in the upper left and then click on About This Mac. Then click on Memory and Memory Upgrade Instructions. This will show you exactly what you need to do to add more RAM to your Mac and tell you what kind to buy. You can often find better deals on RAM through Crucial or other websites.

You should also check to see if you need to clean up your hard drive so that there is enough room for OS X El Capitan to store files it needs. Use this guide to free up space. You can also run Disk Utility to make sure your hard drive is not suffering from problems.

How to Fix OS X El Capitan Battery Life Problems

One very common OS X El Capitan problem is bad battery life right after the upgrade. If you are experiencing bad battery life during the first day after upgrading the computer may simply be using Spotlight to index files, which uses more power.

If this is the case you may simply need to wait a day or so for it to complete. You can use these tips to fix bad OS X El Capitan battery life and to see what apps, or spotlight are causing your problems.

If you are using third-party software that claims to clean up your Mac or keep it safe, one of the first steps to diagnosing bad battery life should be to uninstall apps like MacKeeper and CleanMyMac to see if that solves the problem.

One additional step you may need to try is resetting the System Management Controller on your Mac. Use this guide to complete that task.

Fix OS X El Capitan WiFi Problems

Reasons to Install OS X El Capitan - 2For the most part the OS X El Capitan WiFi problems are small and less likely than on OS X Yosemite thanks to a major change by Apple, but there are still some problems you may run into.

The OS X 10.11.2 update included WiFi reliability, so you should upgrade to that to see if it fixes your problems before taking any other steps. These are also built-in to OS X 10.11.4, so you can update to the current version and get your

If you need to fix slow WiFi on OS X El Capitan, you may need to restart your router and modem, unplug them for about 30 seconds to a minute. If this doesn’t fix it you can try turning your WiFi off on your Mac. Click on the WiFi icon and then Turn WiFi off. After a minute turn it back on. This can fix many problems.

Other potential fixes including clicking on Open Network Preferences and then on Advanced to change the order your computer should connect to, options to delete a WiFi network and more. Sometimes deleting a connection and re-adding it will fix the issue.

Fix OS X El Capitan Bluetooth Problems

After upgrading to OS X El Capitan we’ve seen odd Bluetooth connectivity issues with the Apple Magic Trackpad. If you run into problems, the best thing to do is try re-pairing your devices or powering them on and off.

Users with OS X El Capitan Bluetooth connection issue should install OS X 10.11.2, as it includes fixes to prevent Bluetooth devices disconnecting.

Be careful turning Bluetooth off on your Mac if you only have a Bluetooth mouse and a Bluetooth keyboard.

Fix OS X El Capitan AirDrop Not Working

AirDrop is a great way to quickly send a file from your iPhone to your Mac, Mac to Mac or Mac to iPhone. Unfortunately we’ve heard from users who say AirDrop is not working any more. Here are some steps to try on your Mac and what to check on your iPhone.

If your Mac doesn’t show up on your iPhone, click on Finder on your Mac and then on AirDrop. This normally does the trick.

You may also need to choose to send to Everyone instead of Contacts only on your iPhone or iPad by using Control Center and from the AirDrop screen in Finder on Mac.

If neither of those work you should turn Bluetooth and WiFi off and back on on the iOS device. Be careful turning off Bluetooth on your Mac if you only have a Bluetooth mouse.

You can also try rebooting your devices and your router if you are at home.

Fix OS X El Capitan Spotlight Problems

OS X El Capitan Spotlight Problems

A common OS X El Capitan Spotlight problem is that it does not include some of the new features. If this happens you should go to Spotlight settings and turn apps off and back on to see if that fixes the issue. This may not solve all of your problems. One member of our team still cannot use the Weather feature.

If you need to get the Spotlight window back to the default location click and hold on the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of your screen.

Fix OS X El Capitan App Problems

After upgrading to OS X El Capitan you may experience apps that crash or that simply do not work at all.

The first thing to do is check for updates. This varies from one app to the next so you will need to figure out how to update the app on your own. Most compatibility updates are free, but if your app is a very old version, you may need to buy an upgrade.

Another option is to simply remove and install your app again. This won’t always fix the issue, but it is surprisingly good at it. Here’s a list of the apps that are and aren’t working in OS X El Capitan.

  • Fixes an issue where outgoing server information may be missing from Mail
  • Resolves an issue that prevented display of messages and mailboxes in Mail

Additionally, upgrading to OS X 10.11.2 adds a fix that, “prevented Mail from deleting messages in an offline Exchange account.”

You can fix Mail crashing on startup by using this guide to turn on accounts one-by-one instead of a rush of checking when Mail starts. This may also fix Mail freezing in OS X El Capitan.

Fix Mail cannot access servers problems on El Capitan by deleting the mail account and re-adding it to your Mac. This solved the issue for some users on the Apple Support Forums.

How to Fix OS X El Capitan Printer Problems

We’ve heard from users who have OS X El Capitan printer problems after upgrading. This is not extremely common, but if you do tun into it you can normally fix it pretty easily.

The first step is to restart your printer and restart your computer and make sure both are connected if the printer is wireless.

If that doesn’t work you will need to reset the printer status on your Mac. Go to System Preferences -> Printers & Scanners -> Right Click or Two Finger Click on your Printer and choose Reset Printing System.

After doing this you may need to restart your Mac again. If neither of these solutions work, you should try searching your printer name and OS X El Capitan to see if there are specific fixes for your model.

First off, restart your computer to see if that fixes the problem. You may be surprised how often this fixes annoying problems. Make sure the SD card is removed and the hard drive is unplugged when you restart.

If that doesn’t solve the problem, you should try to reset the SMC and the PRAM on your Mac.

How to Fix Stubborn OS X El Capitan Problems

You Have Mac WiFi Problems

You Have Mac WiFi Problems

If you have WiFi problems on your Mac with OS X Yosemite you should consider being one of the first to upgrade to OS X El Capitan.

Apple put a lot of effort into fixing these problems and continues to address Mac WiFi problems with the OS X 10.11.2 update. These appear to be stable in the OS X 10.11.4 update.

Apple switches back to the old tool it used for network connectivity on your Mac. With the return of mDNSResponder, your OS X Yosemite WiFi problems should be a thing of the past.

Users who are already on OS X El Capitan should consider instaling the OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 update as it includes a previously released fix for WiFI reliability.

I’d like to know two things if anyone knows the answer:
    1. Is there a way to organize Notes alphabetically as one could do before?
    2. Is there a way to designate a default email account within Apple Mail from which all emails, unless otherwise indicated, will be sent?

    Thanks.

re.2: The account on the top of the accounts list at the left of the mail viewer window is the default. If you want to change the default, you can drag the preferred account to the top.

Mail->Preferences->Composing has a field “Send new messages from:” in which you can select the account from which new messages are sent.

LKB Did you find a way to organise Notes alphabetically because I have also noticed that this option does not appear to be available anymore?

When I enter System Preferences and navigate to Security and Privacy it will open in the last window I attempted to open, then more times than I can count it freezes then drops out, quits. Little by little system preferences is starting to work, downloaded the new os x about 12 hours ago. As I write this I notice that a lot of what I has to be gone back over as keyboard strokes are slow or do not appear.

Having the same problem – panes in System Preferences do not load and it crashes, or they load and subsequently crash.

It certainly rivals Yosemite which caused freezing and crashing on a regular basis. I almost feel like I’m using a PC, there are so many issues.

Agree!! Worse upgrade ever. Used my macbook professionally on stage and download has rendered infra red remote useless. Not to mention all the other issues that have come with this download. I’m ready to toss the computer i’m so frustrated.

I’ve been using mac computers since their introduction over 30 years ago. I am about to throw my mac in the trash and buy a PC with the terrible windows 10 operating system, which is 100 times better than “El Capitan”. Thank you so much apple. Y’all are worried too much about your IPhone and other social media computers and not about someone that depends on your operating system to make a damn living. Your “El Capitan” can’t hold on to a network connection for any length of time. See you apple. It’s been a nice run for 30 something years but Gates is kicking your ass.

Hap, I’m with you on this.
El Capitan is the worst OS ever produced by apple.
I too had over 10 years using apple OS, until this poor excuse for an OS came out.
Mr. Gates has come on top leaving apple is the ashes. Goodbye apple, it was “fun, ha!

When I open new windows in Safari, they often (but not always) open the sidebar as well, which I don’t like. This is new for me on El Capitan. Does anyone else see this as well? Is there a known fix?

    • Jack

      11/06/2015 at 3:47 pm

Apparently the correct fix is finding a new operating system, shutting Apple out of your wallet and demanding actual testing be done BEFORE they release something.

Just speculating, of course. My Mac was a seriously capable piece of equipment until I installed this crap OS.

Thank you for saying this. I feel like a computer idiot after upgrading to Yosemite then El C. I so miss Mt. Lion. I don’t understand why Apple has so many complaints about their OS and just ignores them. When my Mac is no longer working I’m switching to a PC.

          06/14/2016 at 2:02 pm

Apple doesn’t just ignore problems, they deny they exist.

Nothing is more frustrating to me than to search for a solution to a Mac problem and find thousands upon thousands of post in various forums of people having the same problem with no solution. Then, when you into the genius bar you hear this: “Really, that’s not a problem anyone at Apple has ever seen or heard of before.”

          • WhingeyMrWhinge

            07/09/2016 at 10:43 am

Sooo just hazzarding a guess … Does anything think that maybe the problems aren’t being had at the “Genius Bar” (such a name!), as they aren’t using systems of an age greater than 2 years no doubt … Most common issue for slow system; slow old dinosaur can’t cope anymore, which is a testament to what has been said for many years about Apple! Every update will naturally widen the gap of backwards compatibility, which is understandable!. But yes that does force people to upgrade … ?!?! And? …
Other common issue is faulty RAM or HDD or SSD or SATA Cable between the HDD or SSD. … The system could also need a full internal clean and dust removal with thermal compound being replaced.
… Oh and the aspect of there being thousands upon thousands of similar posts upon forums around the world lately, well the population has grown and the population is now far more socially connected and whingers love whingers and they love to band together! … Which is potentially why the actual people who SHOULD be replying on these forums, keep as far away from the hate mongering forums as possible!
Sheesh. … Stop using Apple computers based on naive beliefs!

Since installing El Capitan yesterday, I cannot open “Photos”. Message on screen says “Photos must quit because the photo library has become unavailable or its data is corrupt”.
Also, after finally getting my email to work, I still cannot get the signature facility to work. It worked perfectly on Yosemite.

    • Mark Wheeler

      10/06/2015 at 1:32 pm

For Mail signatures, you have to open preferences in Mail, and drag (add) the signature to the Mail account. For some reason the system retained my signatures but separated them from my Mail account, so I had to add them back. Hope this helps.

I use a MacBook Pro with just 256GB SSD, so I have photos stored on my Time Capsule. However, opening photos in preview causes them to come up green. I can view them by clicking the eye icon at the top of the folder, but no matter how I open them in preview, they always come up as a green image. Same thing even if I copy them to my desktop. They open fine in Photoshop, but preview seems to have issues.

Maybe you can help me. I recently downloaded El Cap and was immediately disappointed in Photos. No contrast control, no brightness control and when I slide the sharpness bar I see no change in my picture either during or after. Any thoughts? I would like to add an extension but the description of them in the App store is limited and I cannot convince myself that any of them would get me back to at least the capabilities I had with iPhoto. Any thoughts?

Paul: Photos definitely has brightness and contrast (and more). When viewing a photo, hit enter to go edit mode (or click the button with the three horizontal sliders in the upper right corner of the window.). Then click “Adjust” with the dial icon. You should see sliders for Brightness, Contrast, as well as Highlights, Shadows, Exposure, etc.

Thanks for this article. I haven’t encountered any of the mentioned problems (yet). Has anyone run into any issues when connecting to an external monitor? I started getting severe screen flicker and screen tear on both my monitor and tv (connected via Thunderbolt to D-Sub and HDMI) right after the update to 10.11 on my Early 2011 MBP. On Yosemite this was working fine.

My HDMI only works when I’m connected to the Mac mini via a VPN connection to my MacBook Pro that I use to control PLEX on the Mac mini. It did work on Yosemite.

    • gruvinnz

      10/15/2015 at 5:29 pm

Same problem here. IN my case, it seems to only happen when VM Ware Fusion (7 or 8) is started and a Windows VM started inside of that. But it’s early days (as in the first).

      • gruvinnz

        10/15/2015 at 5:32 pm

I guess I should note that I run two external monitors, on an iMac 27″ (late 2013) — one on each Thunderbolt port, via HDMI adapters. All screen experience the flicker though. Oh and the things that flicker are almost always windows or menu drop downs that have been closed or otherwise should have disappeared. Google Chrome’s entire header bar and even now faded temporary message popups inside Chrome (and other apps) also flicker. So it’s not just whole windows or menu drop downs that have been closed. What a mess.

After downloading El Capitan, I can no longer use my CanoScan LIDE 200 scanner. The error message says something like it can’t be operated by two users at the same time.

    • Toby Walker

      10/11/2015 at 3:32 am

Hi Tony, I have the same scanner here, same issue, although my scanner gets stopped half way through an A4 sheet scan. The remedy at the moment is to use the ‘free-ish’ Vuescan software, which works here, until Canon update their own software. You can download that at any certified download site (MacUpdate etc) The proper software doesn’t currently exist at the moment. Hope that helps.

      • Bec Drakenhall

        10/14/2015 at 7:33 pm

Glad the VueScan driver worked for you. It didn’t for me and I had to buy a new scanner, since Canon doesn’t support the LIDE 200 for El Cap.

        • James

          01/17/2016 at 7:11 am

Hi Bec, what printer/scanner did you opt for that works with El Capitan? Seems Canon says it will work for certain operating systems and then when you get it, it doesn’t scan at all. Canon software fails and VueScan sometimes doesn’t have the software to support your scanner! Thank you.

      • Chipper Jones

        12/28/2015 at 9:01 am

        Alternate Solution.

I had a similar error for my older HP PhotoSmart 2610. I was using the USB connection to this printer until the El Capitan upgrade (yes I delayed intentionally until late December). The Vuescan software solution did work for me, however I didn’t want to pay the developer, knowing I had another solution. The other solution I have available on my particular printer is to use the built-in printer scan software. It is accessible from a computer using a HTTP interface. I simply type the IP # of my local printer into my web browser and I was able to scan as needed. Other printer/scanner vendors may have built-in software available via ethernet HTTP interface as well.

        Example: https://10.0.1.8

    • Bec Drakenhall

      10/14/2015 at 7:32 pm

CanoScan LIDE 200 does not work with El Capitan – see the Canon site for compatible devices. You can get all sorts of error messages – basically just junk code. I donated my 200 to Goodwill and purchased a 220, after trying the VueScan free driver – didn’t work either, for the reason above. The 220 is much faster though, so it was a good thing.

      • Dan Grandstaff

        11/18/2015 at 9:49 am

Bec, I’m not clear whether it was the 220 that didn’t work either, or the VueScan? Can you clarify because I’ll buy a 220 if it will work with El Capitan.

      10/15/2015 at 10:12 pm

Hi I too have had the same problem but I partially solved by keeping drivers Mavericks version and using the imaging system application. The application works well and allows you to scan different formats that can be used by various applications. Hoping to be helpful ..

    • Michael Juul

      01/05/2016 at 2:12 pm

I also have a LIDE 200 scanner and just realized I couldn’t use it anymore with El Capitan. My workaround was to install the Canon software and driver on my Windows 7 environment in Parallels. Works as usual this way (though assumes you have Parallels with Win7…).

I am having the same problem with iMovie quitting unexpectedly when I use certain features within the program. Also when I try to add a photo to a video it shows black instead of the video on playback. I don’t have any idea how to fix it!

      • grammaj

        10/11/2015 at 4:59 pm

That’s the issue I was referring to below. iMovie 9.09 can’t find my photo library so I tried just dragging and dropping photos into the timeline which worked in the past. I can see them in the timeline (and the dragged in audio works), but in the actual movie the photos are replaced by a black screen. If anyone has a fix I’d love to hear it. Right now I’m resorting to working on my spouse’s Macbook Pro- he (wisely?) never upgrades anything.

All photos (except thumbnails) in Aperture are grossly overexposed and useless. Only slideshows display correctly.
What happened to ‘Securely Empty Trash’? Not even available as an option!

    • Aryugaetu

      10/27/2015 at 2:05 am

With the latest versions of advanced data recovery, Apple could no longer claim “Securely Empty Trash” is 100% by today’s standards. It is still available in “Onyx” at https://www.titanium.free.fr/onyx.html under “Cleaning” -> “Trash”.

Onyx is a totally free app. It accesses many hidden Mac functions for techs and offers no instructions, so be very careful when using it. Search the internet if you have questions about any functions. Heed and carefully read all warnings.

Note: Standard methods of securely emptying the trash do not work with SSD, hybrid and Fusion drives. For more info, read https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5521.

Just updated to El Capitain last week, and the only challenge my MacBook Pro 15.4 faces is that each time it goes to sleep my Seagate 1 GB Time Machine “improperly ejects itself”. Once the system “wakes up” I have to “remount” the drive.

the problem(s) I am having with Mail in El Capitan is

    a) when I first launch Mail, it just sits and does nothing and I have to force quit it and relaunch to get it running

    b) I have 32G memory on my machine, and when I launch Mail, it eats up almost all of my memory available

    I am looking for solutions…..

    • MC

      10/07/2015 at 2:40 am

I find that the new Mail app in El Capitan is trying to clean up the log files by zipping them in memory which caused the problem.

Try to delete your log file manually in the following folder (Command + Shift + G):
      ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Logs/Mail/

You may see huge size log files in the folder …just delete all *.log and restart your Mail App. Then, things should back to normal.

        thanks for that tip
yes, I did find a few zip files in there and removed them
someone on another thread mentioned something about removing 3 Container files and letting Mail rebuild – I tried that and cancelled it when the rebuild timer went up to 123 hours…. lol

One really annoying complaint about El Capitan is in Mission Control. The Space icons used to show each Space as an image, now it shows the stupid desktop X label until one has to hover over. This is really stupid because some of us actually know how to use a keyboard and use the mouse as little as possible. I need to see the Space and what’s in it, not some useless label.

I cannot find a fix for this anywhere.

      Try this https://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,1632139,1632195

      2. If that didn’t fix it, try another User account. If ok there, problem is in User/Library/Preferences in original/problem User account. Try trashing Finder prefs, resetting them and see what happens. Otherwise select other appropriate prefs to trash, testing each time in between.

Restart finder and done, it works for me….

After installing El Capitan, I can’t edit pdf’s as much. For some reason when I click the text button to add text to my pdf, the text box appears in the middle of the page instead of where my cursor is. And it doesn’t allow you to select arrows. My boss’s text messages use to come to my email now it goes to a separate app which made me miss 3 text messages from my boss. Thank goodness they weren’t urgent.

    • Bec Drakenhall

      10/14/2015 at 7:24 pm

You need to drag and drop the text box to the location where you want to type. You can then adjust the font inside, the color, etc., but you can’t remove the box until you’re done typing. It’s a PIA for sure, compared with the old Preview from Mountain Lion.

When I upgraded to El Capitan I got the new iMovie, the one that thinks it knows what you want and only exports in HD format. I’ve tried to go back to iMovie 9 but it no longer recognizes my photo library. (I do have a library designated as “system library”, still doesn’t work.) I need to export 4×3 for my job and this is driving me crazy. Anyone have this problem, or a solution that doesn’t require a $300 app?

Same for me. All of my previous movies in Library no longer have the photos (iMovie tells me that they do not exist on my hard drive — ha — they are still there). GrammaJ, I don’t have a fix but thank you for sharing my misery. At least I know that I am not the only person who hates how Apple, once the pinnacle of a machine for creative work, has dumbed down its new apps (like iMovie), to make all the decisions for the user — and not including the choices I want. Bring back the 1983 commercial and through it in the new CEO’s face.

I installed El capitan on my Macbook which took about 3hrs to reach 90 percent. It then froze. I tried several times switching off and when turning on, holding shift when hearing the apple sound. It continued reaching 90 percent, but then i left it and it finally installed after 30mins. No video or audio would work online or on any media player and launchpad was glitchy. After trying many options which wouldn’t work I restarted the Macbook. It, unusually, took about 15 minutes, but now everything works perfectly and its super quick! May not work for everyone, but sometimes the simplest things are forgotten and still work best!

MacBook Pro hooked up to an external Dell monitor.Every time after sending mail or minimizing the window to tehedock, the viewer mail window disappears.
But, it is visible on the MBP screen.
I then have to select new viewer window, which then opens all the way to the left of the desktop with a thin white stripe.
I then have to drag it over to the right and reduce it until it fits.
But, whatever action I do in mail makes the viewer window on the external monitor disappear.

Another problem with El Capitan is when I press F3 to see all the open windows there aren’t any logos to help me differentiate between the open windows like in the older versions (i.e I can’t tell the difference between open Safari, preview or world document) so it takes me few seconds to look for the window I want and sometimes it takes few clicks and back and forth F3s until I open the window I want – this is driving me insane, why would they remove it (argh!)

Hate Hate Hate El Capitan. Since updating nothing works correctly. Dropbox: I have tried downloading the latest version but it still will not open. It disappeared from the finder sidebar. You can click on the icon in apps but nothing happens. I try dragging the app to the trash but it states that the app is “open” which it is NOT! I have force quit everything. I have tried downloading latest version etc but NOTHING will open. iPhoto: iPhoto will not open. It states that I need the latest version updates. I go to app store, I try to install the new download and it states that it has already been accepted and is in the purchased list. I go to that which only lists the 2012 version of iPhoto and when I try and update from that (which is my only option) it gives me an error message. phot keeps showing up in the app store “update” list as in it needs to be updated to a newer version 9.6.1 but again, if you try and update from there it tells me it is accepted and go back to purchased list…and round and round we go! SOOOO Frustrating.
Oh, and now InDesign won’t work either.

I had the same problem as you with iPhoto. I dragged to the trash bin, then went to the app store and reloaded it works fine now. I have got a problem with iMovie can’t find a way to delete photos that have automatically been put there any ideas?

With El Capitan, any time I close my laptop screen, or go to ‘sleep mode’; the screen and computer will not turn back on. The computer is still running as I see the HHD light going, but i can not use it. have to do a hard restart every time I wake away from the laptop for 30mins+. Goes back to OS 10.10.

Ever since installing El Capitan on my MacBook Pro mid2012 my wifi disconnects after about 20 minutes and when I turn off my wifi and turn it back on half the time it will say connected but I can’t use the Internet. When I hit the wifi setting it says there’s no IP address yet it worked before. Also bc my internet connection drops my webpages I open take forever to open or it freezes. My computer has also frozen to the point nothing would respond and I had to do a hard shutdown. Now when I shut down the computer takes way longer to shut down or it doesn’t shut down at all and I’m forced to do another hard shutdown. Nothing but frustration with El Capitan!!! I hope these issues can be fixed ASAP!

Wish I shouldn’t have downloaded update new version El Capitan… its wasting my time! I need cs5 illustrator to work for my side job! That’s not cool! I hope they fixed the problems ASAP!! Geesh… El Captain is the worst upgrade I ever seen.

My Mac Mini bluetooth keeps turning on and off, about every 10-15 seconds (most the time). Tried in vain to determine a possible conflict, but after hours trying to diagnose the problem, I just turned it off. Had to buy a new wireless mouse to replace the magic mouse.

I have been had Mac since 1984, the original classic (MAC SE) and this must be THE worst upgrade ever!! After upgrading to EC it lost all my IMAP mail accounts except my “me” personal account. Time machine stopped working automatically and even in manual mode you can kick your hat faster than it backs up. (About and hour for 15GB). There have been lots of other small anomalies plus what I just read in this blog. This upgrade has not ben tested correctly and a fix is needed very urgently. If the great Steve Jobs had been with us this would never have happened as he wouldn’t have allowed it to be released.

I can’t agree with you more!! SAME PROBLEMS> AND Mail doesn’t “keep” my settings for my non-google and non-me email addresses. So it will work for a while, once I go in and re-add settings, but then reverts after a while to “No password required” for my smtp out settings (which of course need a password.) It’s infuriating! After HOURS of chat with Apple, they are still clueless as to why this happens and can only go through tedious b.s. things like making sure my password is correct – YES!! IT’S CORRECT, IF YOUR DAMN MACHINE WOULD KEEP THE SETTINGS I PUT IN OVER AND OVER AND OVER!! WORST upgrade ever. We shouldn’t need to futz with all our settings and re-install and re-put in all our passwords for everything multiple times after an update. It should just f-ing WORK.

rebooted to gray screen… of course, I had my sound off, so could not hear chme on reboot. shift did not work, nor command S… what did at least get me as far as the apple screen was to hold down the alt key and choose the proper partition. As I am upgrading from snow leopard, I actually installed a clean version of snow leopard on a different parttion.. imported using immigration assistant and then instlled el Kapitan. it now appears to have installed and started.

Update worked flawlessly on macbook pro retina, however, on my 27″ iMac the mouse would NEVER bring up the dock. It was as if there was no dock installed. Using the mac trackpad. Even without the ability to use the trackpad to open ANYTHING there was the ever present beachball of death. I tried reinstalling the new OS and after 38 hours of no production I did a time machine backup of the entire system overnight.
Just at a loss at to why its fine on the macbook and not on the desktop.
I have searched everywhere about the trackpad non response and have found nothing.

This also happened to me in Mavericks and I also just noticed it’s not been fixed in El Capitan either. To remount Time Machine, and when computer is on, unplug the external device’s power supply and then plug it back in again. This should remount Time Machine. My problem now is that the Time Machine icon won’t turn blue with its logo. It stays orange.

Had completed a full (not a ‘partial’) Time Machine backup of my iMac’s SSD (which acts as the operational drive) & had checked that the backup showed the full 69GB of photos in my Photos library. Then erased the SSD as it had a lot of 3rd party software which had slowed the iMac down over the years. Loaded El Capitan from a UDSB drive – most things working BUT the “Photos” app won’t import my photos from the Time Machine backup, nor will Photos allow a “Restore” from the backup.

There is a big problem for some people who upgraded to El Capitan and it’s affecting me! First off Capitan worked great for a couple weeks then one day I turn my system on, boot up and log on. It took a crazy long time to load my desktop and when it did it was still crazy slow in operation. I restored from a backup and that fixed the slowdown problem but unfortunately now I have a problem where it hangs at boot up, the progress bar gets up to about 3/4 of the way then it stops. Holding the power button to shut down and then trying again and it works, WEIRD! and I’m not the only person with this problem. Google “el capitan stalls at boot” and the first link will be Apple’s discussion page about it.

Since installing El Capital can not access email, it does not recognise password. Also SSD shows full when it only 2/3 full, so cannot open any software. 10/24/2015 at 8:55 pm

This happened to me! Have you tried right clicking on the drives, then selecting “get info”? When that window opens, click on the lock icon that is on the bottom right. You may have to enter your computer password to unlock. Once you’ve unlocked the drive you should be able to change the privileges to read & write not just read only. This is what worked for me.

      • Sequence

        10/24/2015 at 9:04 pm

Thanks Rachael, I tried but the sharing and permissions only shows “you can only read” the lock icon doesn’t show for me to do that :(

        • Rachael

          10/24/2015 at 9:10 pm

:/ On the bottom of the get info menu (after unlocking it) do you see your name, “staff”, and “everyone”? And to the right the privileges for each….which sounds like for you would say “read only” with an up an down arrow to the right of the text. I am able to click on the current selected privilege and a menu pops up and then I can choose from three options: “read only”, “read & write” , “write only (dropbox)”. I can make those choices for myself, “staff” and “everyone.” Is this something you see or can do?

Tried turning mouse on and off plus new batteries and unplugging keyboard. I have to manually power off the imac via the power button…which causes problems when I power back up. El Capitan has been causing all manners of poltergeist-like problems, often involving basic user settings. I have 2 suggestions, both are quick and safe:

      1. Go to “System Preferences” -> “Mouse”. Even if “Double-click Speed” appears correct, move it so El Capitan is forced to refresh your mouse preferences. If it works, then just move it back to a comfortable speed.

This is true with any preference settings and functions that don’t work, are missing or are misbehaving after the update.

      2. Relaunch your Finder in “Force Quit…” under the Apple () menu. It is safe to do with apps open. Don’t panic when it redraws your screen. It takes a few seconds.

Interesting little quirk ….relating to the reboot to gray blank screen after install. even with resetting the pram, I am not able to do a normal restart. it will boot to gray… I have to choose alt and choose the drive to start up on(I have snow leopard on another partition so I can still run older software when needed). the weird thing is, if I start on snow leopard, and look at start up disks, it does not recognize the el capitan drive as a start up disk, and when I choose alt, it comes up not only with the two start up disks, but it also comes up with two restore disks and one called EFI boot that I don’t know what they are from.

My experience with El Capitan has been a PITA. The first try got stuck at about 90%, forced a reboot and the external SSD had to be reformatted. 2nd try took a while but finally finished. The driver for my Tascam interface no longer works, my presets for Garageband produce no sound, youtube playback is jittery and my mac mini crashes about once per day while no one is using the computer. Call me very unimpressed.

Doesn’t recognise Eos camera, raw images are turned into jpegs, contacts not working, can’t find photo library that will open, doesn’t connect with Bridge. if Apple want serious photographers to stay with their hardware they’d better fix this because it’s a disaster for me. How do I uninstall this monster?! It wants to run everything – badly.

I upgraded to El Capitan and my mail ceased to come in. Thirty minutes later with help from my phone company the issue was found to be under mail, preferences, the advanced mail box, there is a line “Allow insecure authentication” This box was not ticked. So ticking it produced all my mail from the last few days.
However, I now see each mail title line OK, but not the text in the right hand side when I click on a particular e-mail, which previously allowed me to read it without any other operation. I can’t see what to do next – any help would be appreciated.
I am definitely not impressed at an upgrade that wastes so much of my time on a basic function like continuing to receive mail!
    Thanks

Hi! I don’t know if anyone has already asked this question… It’s entirely possible that I’m just doing something incorrectly but I just tried to open my Mission Control after I updated to El Capitan a few days ago. I know it’s changed but everything I had on the page (stickies) are gone. All the apps on the page are gone. I’m not concerned about the weather or dictionary apps or anything like that… just the stickies I had one there. Was that supposed to happen during the update? Thanks for any help you can give me!

My Safari version 9.0.1 on my 27 inch Retina 5k desktop iMac, after my recent El Capitan 10.11.1 upgrade, has stopped searching when I type a search word or phrase into the address bar. This used to take me to a google search page. Now when I type something in and hit “return” nothing happens. If I click behind the address bar entry with my mouse, then hit return the blue bar begins showing a search is in progress, but that never goes anywhere. It hangs and never brings up a webpage. If I click on any of my favorites in a Safari browser page they load immediately. If I click on a default “Yahoo” that loads, and then I can do internet searches with Yahoo. Because of all that I know my internet is working fine – plus using Firefox for internet searches works. Any suggestions or other people experiencing this problem?

For anyone with Mail problems. I discovered this through trial and error:

    – In the Preferences/accounts settings the check box for “Automatically detect and maintain account settings” was turned on.

Somehow I thought El Cap was getting this wrong so I unchecked it and saved the settings. Miracle of miracles…days worth of mail showed up.

Now if I could get my local post office to be as successful at delivering mail… :~!

After upgrading to El Cap older Pages documents take up to an hour to load. Explanation was that they have to be converted. I have hundreds of Pages documents to have to “convert” them IS ABSURB! The suggested “fix” was to open the olde documents in iCloud, they opened almost immediately but then you have to “Buy” more storage space from Apple…. sounds like a conspiracy.

I had to stop the update mid through because i was leaving the place i had internet. Now i can’t log into my account or my stuff. I can only use the “guest” account and is what i am using now. Every time i log into mine, it panicks as soon as the load bar pops up and has black and white print at the top left of the screen and said some stuff like “Current version: not set yet”. So I can only assume that it was because I had stopped the update prematurely. What should I do?

We downloaded El Capitan a couple weeks ago on our iMac and when we printed certain files (we are historians and do a lot of writing) the file printed nothing but rectangles for each letter. Then I noted on one of our files part of the file was not corrupted (no rectangles). The corrupted part of the file was in Bookman and the non screwed-up part of the document was in Book Antiqua.

I have tried reseting PRAM, SMC and have even reinstalled MAC. Damn thing doesn’t want to boot from internal drive .. if i connect same drive via external USB it boots up just fine.. i have tested it with two drives same story. Seems like they screwed up with the EFI or SMC. with this version. and it doesn’t let me downgrade it.

We are still working to correct some (but not all) the serious problems we downloaded with the El Capitan upgrade (actually it is a downgrade). None of our files that we created with Bookman fonts are printable. The first 35 page document we printed had a rectangle for each letter. We can change the file to some other font and it will print correctly. We have many hundreds of files in Bookman (we are authors and editors).

Is there any help as to how to get Bookman back on as a usable font?

My issue may be similar to one of yours out there but seems to be rather odd.

My monitor has side usb ports which I’d been plugging my keyboard and mouse into. After upgrading to El Capitan, the OS complains that it cannot find a bluetooth keyboard. Well no duh. I don’t have one. If I unplug the keyboard from the monitor and plug it directly into the case, it works just fine. Also, If I leave it plugged into the monitor and then borrow a bluetooth keyboard from a buddy, then it will detect that and unlock and for some odd reason, start allowing me to use the wire keyboard again. But then if I reboot the computer, I go back to square 1 again. Of all the things to break updating your OS, the keyboard? Really? Where in the world was the quality control on this one?

3 days ago i updated my MacBook Pro to El Capitan. Safari is working slow but i can live with that! My drama is that i have a Seagate Plus Portable Drive, on it i have my families videos, photos etc and i use it to do time machine backup. I have used it for 3 months no problem before the upgrade to El Capitan. yesterday I transferred about 100G of video to the Seagate. I checked several times and it was all there and opening. I then deleted it from iPhoto an emptied my trash!!! A little while later i left my Mac for several minutes to get a SD card. When i got back the USB was still connected but a message said the USB had not been ejected properly. Now on the time machine symbol on top of my screen the latest update info which it say was yesterday is grey and who i click on backup now it says try backing up when the seagate drive is available. It doesn’t appear in my utilities or in the usb component in about this mac.when i go to time machine and click on it i get a cancel or remove disc option instead of use option. I spent most of last night reading and googling and i installed the Paragon NTFS thing but nothing happened. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to reformat because i don’t want to lose my stuff. Does anyone know how i can get time machine to open it and work?

After upgrading to El Capitan I was unable to use the “Easy Share” button on my Kodak app to download pictures from my camera. The Easy Share software is no longer available online from Kodak, so I thought I was out of luck until I found this information on Kodak’s website:

For a computer with MAC OS:

Make sure the power to your camera is off.
    Do one of the following:
1 Connect your camera to the computer using the USB cable that came with your camera, then turn on the power to your camera.
2 Remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into a memory card reader (either built in to the computer or externally connected to the computer).

Open iPhoto (now Photos) from the dock or the Applications folder.
Enter the “Roll Name” and “Description” for the pictures.
    Click Import.

I upgraded my Mac Mini to El Capitan from Snow Leopard and now I cannot access anything in the App Store or iTunes. These two apps ask me to log in with my Apple ID and password; after I enter the correct info, they just hang there. I spent three hours with AppleSupport and they could not fix the problem. I know it is not an issue with my Apple ID because I can log in just fine through Safari and using my other Apple devices. It’s frustrating because I cannot update any other Apps (which I have 3 updates pending) or access my iTunes without being able to log in.
    Anyone else having these issues?
Everything else seems to be running fine so far.

I think Apple continues to be spread too thin in the QA department for Mac OS updates; and consistently, since 10.4, the even numbered release versions are better than the odd numbered, for some uncanny reason. 10.6, 10.8 are still considered the best in most surveys I’ve seen, with 10.10 better than 10.9 or 10.11 so far. Let’s hope 10.12 fixes 10.11. I’m using Chrome now as default browser which has boosted productivity back to near 10.10 levels where Safari worked pretty consistently. It’s now a hot mess in 10.11. Each bug fix seems to make it worse with 10.11.2 being laughable. The lists of discussions are some of the funniest (sadly) I’ve read in a long time. Reminds me of some of the Windows support threads I’ve moderated in the past. So far my favorite thing about El Capitan is that it’s actually a lot easier to mod old Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1 chassis to accept it compared to Yosemite and Mavericks.

Can’t wait for the the 10.12 then…but here I am complaining on another computer cos my macbook pro is now ready for special school. I have worked on this platform for 15 years and for the first time I had a “dead” laptop for 8 days as El Krapitan continuously failed to boot. Eventually a hard wipe and 3 days at Macstore brought back a virtually useless machine – even the Macstore can’t get the internal dvd drive to read – which used to work perfectly – and which I use for my work a lot. Amongst other really irritating slowness issues, and glitchy interfaces please hear our cries Mac, bring out a teleporter so I can go back to December 2015 and tell myself not to update…

I too have a 2012 Macbook Air which is shutting down whenever I plug it in to charge and close the lid. Then when I open the lid I have to reboot the laptop. Ugh. What a pain. Pretty astonishing that there are so many issues with this OS!? It used to be that Apple OS releases were about as stable as they came–clearly better than Microsoft. But not now, apparently. I’ve been more happy with Windows 10 these days than my Macbook Air. Come on, Apple, get it together!

I have a new Retina 27 inch iMac late 2015, running El Captan. Suddenly it doesn’t recognize anything connected by USB. I reset the PRAM and SMC. Did a complete shut down and rest. Nothing works. When I reset the PRAM, external drives mount for a second or two, then disappear. It’s not a power issue: The same thing happens with a hub or one low power device connected. Ran diagnostics: No hardware issues. Any ideas?

I believe any other computer company would be smart to use your unhappy reply lest to develop one heck of a darn good advertisement campaign. It is very evident that Apple is not interested in selling computers anymore. In the four years i have owned this computers I’ve had four updates. I downloaded El Capitan.app onto my internal hard drive and then copy/pasted to my external drive. Can anyone tell me why I cannot install the El Capitan app from my external drive to “test drive” it without affecting my original 10.6.8 Snow Leopard OS X? When I re-start holding down the Option key it brings up the external drive but it’s grayed out and it says that the external drive is used for Time Machine backups. Yes, so what? Ok, I am not finding any answers to how to access my Aperture library after installing El Capitan update. It tells me ” In order to open “Aperture”, you need to update to the latest version”. I can not find one as apparently there is no such thing available in Canada. (?) What to do? ALL MY PHOTOS ARE THERE! Are they now lost??? GRRRRR……Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Apple really need to sort things! Sooooooo many issues with OSX we will all end up abandoning mac computers (the only reason I have an Ipad an iPhone, Apple TV, itunes, etc is so I can control all this through my home computer) You will end up loosing BIG STYLE If these lazy OSX issues continue to plague our lives. GET IT SORTED before we move over to PC Trying to be too clever is my guess!!! I just want things to work simply and easily but most of all CONSISTENTLY. Take heed Apple!

El Capitan is literally the worst piece of crap operating system I have ever run on a mac. I have never seen the spinning wheel so much in my life. After having so many problems I was ready to throw the iMac out the window, I went through the (not easy anymore) work of doing a clean install wiping my hard drive. Still runs like an old PC. Great job Apple developers, all the bells and whistles on a now unproductive computer is just GREAT.

I use my Mac to produce professional work and not to surf the web to find out on how to solve Apple problems. Frustrating again :-(

I’ve had El Capitan for a few months now (10.11.2) in a late 2009 iMac, but wonder if my current problem is related. When I put the iMac to sleep mode, I can hear the hard drive waking up frequently every few minutes then cycling off. The screen remains dark the whole time. I also have MacKeeper installed. Has anyone experienced this and if so, what is the fix? One contributor on Apple Communities said I had to uninstall MacKeeper because it is junk but looking online, there is some hysteria about MacKeeper but reputable reviewers like it. Can someone give me an objective answer to my problem?

I had so many problems with El Cap that the repair shop actually thought to replace my ssd hard drive on my macbook pro, which we reversed after installing Yosemite and now I am having no problems at all. El Cap has been a progressive nightmare for me. Very disappointed in Apple and am hoping that they take notice and release a brand new OS which satisfies us all!!

Having installed El Capitan yesterday, I have so far found it to work OK. However, one problem, which by most complaints is minor, is that I cannot use my favourite font: ‘Bernard Mod BT’. As far as I can see it is the only font that doesn’t function on El Capitan. Unfortunately, being into font design, I find this very irritating because it is the font that I use on all my headings. Can it be fixed?

Go ahead, most of the problems are exaggerated.
This is the most stable OS I have been working with and I use Macs since 1984.
The only dud I never even tried was Lion.
I agree that everybody has different requirements and ways to work,
but El Capitan is just fine.

I have lost at least 2 days of work trying to fix the NO WIFI problems.

      02/27/2016 at 3:48 pm

I have had nothing but problems with WiFi disconnecting since upgrading to El Capitan. I tried everything from tinkering with Network, Modem/Router, resetting NVRAM and SMC – nothing worked for any sustained length of time. I finally decided to downgrade to Yosemite and it’s been smooth sailing. The downgrade process was simple using Disk Maker X to create a bootable USB (found the how to on this site – thanks). But after the downgrade it took me a whole weekend to reorganize my music, photos and installed apps. It was painful, but now it feels like a labor of love seeing as my WiFi is once again stable. Yosemite for me all the way.

I wish I’d researched before installing El Cap. I read that it would “improve performance and speed” so I hastily updated. Big mistake! In addition to being slower (some activities that used to be instant, such as closing a window or app, or ejecting a CD, now take a while) and constantly getting color wheel, the most annoying thing is that I am frequently encountering a problem with videos (YouTube and Facebook, for example) not opening. They just spin, like the color wheel, but never load up. I’ve only had this iMac for a year and 4 months – I shouldn’t be having this problem! Anyone else unable to view some videos after the update?

On 2-19-16, I bought A new iMac 21,5″ With El Capitan installed. It replaces a late 2006 iMac with Snow Leopard. When I bought that first machine with the then current OS, I had it up and running in an hour or so. My life has been living hell since I powered up the new one. Safari had nag-ware linked to it which prevented me from doing anything. Getting around that Just led me to the next problem, I was so shook up at one point I had to take a two hour break. A real nightmare. There is one bright feature you will absolutely love. I have a Printer from which .I couldn’t get two print jobs out in a row. I simply pushed a couple of buttons, and the system installed that balky printer…..and it works just fine. I had a replacement Printer waiting, so it was already hooked up and I got a repeat performance in about 15 seconds. Now I am trying to find out why my tab bar intermittently disappears, and why I cannot properly pin sites of my choice. This was not a problem with Snow Leopard. Moral: only Purchase direct from Apple.

Thank god for Carbon Copy Cloner! I’ve gone back to Mavericks, again! Second time I’ve tried El Capitan as I thought the latest updates would have made it better but it’s still a clunky, freezing, slow nightmare on my late 2012 MBP with 2.3 GHz i7, 1TB SSD, 2TB HDD and 16GB ram. Never got on with Yosemite either. Is it all this IOS and iCloud integration that seems to be making OSX into an unreliable mess or that it’s just not working with older hardware? Or have Microsoft bought Apple or something?

I cannot connect to my print server under El Capitan. I use a Silex print server for Canon (LAN to USB) to share a printer between the Mac and the PC. That used to work with the previous OS, now it doesn’t anymore since Apple apparently removed some functionality, so the SX Virtual Link software driving the print server and making the connection cannot be installed anymore on the Mac. I have heard other people with other print servers (from Linksys and from TP-link) having similar issues.
Does anyone have the same problem, and more important, did anyone already find a solution how to fix this?

So, my MacBook is darkening most every video and picture. The effects are permanent in some cases, for instance, if I post an image to Facebook or print it. Many videos in Facebook are too dark to watch, but if you move the pointer over it, the video brightens to normal for about 1/2 second, then goes back to black. But it is bigger than Facebook, because printing or e-mailing a jpg does the same thing.

    • Kurt

      05/05/2016 at 5:58 am

How old is your MBP? There are MILLIONS of users with El Capitan, who have no issues, so to call it g”a total piece of garbage” is not justified. Plus, it gets better with each update.
I suggest to unemotionally figure this out.
      1) Reinstall El Capitan brand new, instead of updating. (back up your files of course)
      2) After going through all updates, use it for a while.
      3) If you continue to get Kernel panics, go to an Apple store check the memory chips on/and the motherboard.

I wouldn’t call these fixes.. all the problems apply to our pro tower and activity monitor reveals no unusual loads anywhere… this is just hands down a horrifying OS at the moment and were running the updated 10.11.5.

experiencing the Office crash bug again… Os Freezing… Spotlight non responsive, No sound after sleep mode (system wide), Screens wake to garble pixles then pure white (power cycle screens to freshen the dual gfx cards – 4 screens). apps report low memory on occasion yet so much free mem available when checking activity motor. I could keep digressing on other issues like the loss of NTFS support over network even when using a NTFS mounter. Were going to format this and start over…. Yosemite was working decent just before we updated but we’ll just go back to factory leopard.

Updating El Capitan (I’m now on version 10.11.5) did NOT solve the MS Office problem at all. I get “Word cannot save or create this file. The disk may be full or write-protected” DAILY, and cannot save a document unless I save it to a flash drive. This self inflicted horror of an upgrade has to have been intentional done on behalf of Apple. There isn’t a single pixel that hasn’t been fu*ked with and altered in some way. Aesthetically, they absolutely flattened everything. The buttons, icons, thumbnails, logos etc… have no shape, texture, shading or 3D effect on them. The graphics 2 decades ago were better than this crap. If it ain’t broke, don’t Fu*k with it!!! If I had 10 hands I’d give you 10 thumbs down for this Garbage. Fire whoever had anything to do with this Goddamn disgraceful piece of Shit!

Bless you!! I updated to El Capitan and it was sooooo bad that I started moving everything over to my big pc and using Windows for everything. Now, I just use the Mac to watch youtube videos. It would lock up to the point that I had to hold down the power button and try again. Or, it would freeze and the mouse would suddenly increase in size and lag sooo slow. But upgrading to the latest version is already noticeably better on my MacPro.

This is my first Apple product and I don’t think I will be getting anything else Apple. I had to take a mac class in school for some reason which made no sense living in Seattle (home to Microsoft) and I was pretty disappointed by every aspect of the product. Let’s blame a lot of it on operator error and we are still left with a system that would routinely lock up and freeze with every other function. It made me wonder if anyone at Apple tests the products or not. But, your suggestion made a big difference. Bless you again!!! :))

If your computer will not shutdown if you use Avid products you might try removing

    /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/Avid CoreAudio.plugin/
    or
    /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/Digidesign CoreAudio.plugin/

this was the cause of three of our computers not shutting down after the El Capitain upgrade. After removing the first shutdown will require “sudo shutdown -r now” from the terminal or press and hold the power button. This solved the problem for all three computers for us.

Indeed, El Capitan is pretty much a joke. Cosmetic silliness with no addition of functions and the loss of very many of your favorite programs. It will clear space, since so many things don’t work any more you might as well just delete them. El Capitan is just Apple’s excuse for paying a bunch of kids to code things yet fairly useless for anyone who actually uses their Mac on a daily basis.

Please clarify what you meant by: “Be careful turning Bluetooth off on your Mac if you only have a Bluetooth mouse and a Bluetooth keyboard.” As written, this says we should be careful WHEN turning off Bluetooth. But be careful of what? What should we take care to do or avoid doing? And why is it an issue only for those having only a Bluetooth keyboard and/or mouse? Perhaps you meant that we should take care to REMEMBER our keyboard and mouse when considering WHETHER to turn off Bluetooth. That’s a very different statement.

Wondering if anyone has run into this before. I have an external monitor attached to my 27in iMac and every few times I turn off the monitor, the iMac freezes or locks up. There seems to be no fix other than restarting the computer.

The monitor is connected via HDMI through an adapter to the thunderbolt plug in the back.

Has anyone else had this problem and have you found a fix? I’ve had this problem a long time but finally starting to get annoyed. Thanks!

A couple aspects come to mind.
Given the plug transitioning, there could be some irregularities that cause a panic in the computer. So trying a straight through cable matching the best plug option at each end.
There could also be a form out a setting or a feature where the screen is sending a bit of information back as notification of it being turned off and telling the mac to go to sleep. But occasionally they never actually fully go to sleep thus they can’t initiate the wake of procedure when you return. This aspect could be in regards to a screen that wasn’t intended for use on an apple but I won’t go into detail on that one. But trying a top model display cable (not top price), could confirm an aspect of the screen being the problem with either an inability to run at the full range of specs, ie from low res to high resolution when compared to other panels that are the same size and style of LED LCD. But one screen might only be able to run the special high resolution provided specific cables, the version of the driver in the screen, the version of the plug and so on. These minute details are the things to consider when you buy the products that Apple haven’t “certified” but due to fair play policy they have to accept the competitors brand but at the users own risk if complications arise. Fortunately these days mooost things do actually work.
Without having a look at some of the power management and saving features, and the brands of the cables n screens and the exact model number of the mac, I will have to stop my ideas flowing now, and pass the ball back to whoever else is willing to expel their wisdom
      Good luck buddy :)

I got my 1st iMac in 2008. 8 dos. later I surfed to a school site, and hell began. A new computer provided by Apple, followed by my buying a new hard drive and for all these years absolutely choose, literally thousands of hours on line and at Genius Bar. They fix something, something else is wrong next day. Kept promising to send it to engineers but never did. Wen to genius bar and demanded they look at it. 3 days later, ,”There’s no problem w/the hard drive, no problem w/ software, no viruses, we’ve never seen the problem before, don’t know what it is or how to fix it. Here’s your computer. They did offer unlimited tech support, most good. Tired of playing the game I went to the store; they looked me in the eye and swore that new computer would take care of it! Spent 7 hrs at the bar getting data transfer on 8/1,. Since then have had 3 trips to bar, and over 35 hours w/tech support. Now, tho, tech can’t seem to fix anything! approx. 580 contact cards..disappeared. 1st tech said, too bad, all gone. Called again, he fixed it from Time Machine and I had 850 some cards (should have been about 650. ) But OK, I got them back and stopped my nervous breakdown. Today I get up, I now 1075 cards. Well, better than not enough. some time during the day, the count went down to 360 ;s which means I’m missing about 300. I did nothing. Call Tech, oh, just go back in and reload from time machine each time there is a problem., you won’t lose anything..HUH? Anything except any new/edited cards. I swear he told me that. Told him photos opened on its own while I was viewing an email, all I did was craw the mouse from lower right corner and to close button and suddenly I am looking at Photos. Oh, well, things often jus open on their own. *Then gave me a list of 5 none of which applied.) Showed him the screen shot, oh, well, the next time something happens, right away, take a screen shot, they have to show the second. So the second you see it get the shot and then we can go in and find out why. But, oh, don’t waste any times, bc after a few seconds there have been hundreds of files loaded in between so we can’t find it.Seriouisly? This is what I get to do on a brand new El Capitan desktop Imac? They are selling this crap? Hell has no fury like this stinking iMac. W/the upgrade even the pretty decent tech support is gone.

And I swear to you, people, all I want to do is be able to USE the computer w/out stuff that doesn’t work, that resents with a search that can’t find things, etc.,e ,tc., and I swear to you on the soul of my favorite in the whole world cat that every thing is exactly the truth. “Corporate has now taken over and with the help of the sr. help line and the execute staff and the engineers we will get this problem solved. ” yeah with an axe. This has about driven me crazy, I am an author and my book was delayed–first one it ate,..and took 6 months for pub. to accept it bec of all the freaky thing that kept happening when I tried to send it to them w/both Word and Scrivener..suddenly single to double vertical space in middle of page, strange substitutions, like foreign words appeared, new margins and tabs appearing in the middle of the manuscript. a living nightmare.

And those of you mentioning your issues, I’ve had a number of those also. And if anyone an tell me how to move to a Pc I would, w/out having to sacrifice 3 book manuscripts and hundreds of contact cards, and other stuff that can’t be found by search. And for about a year, every time I went to the Genius bar, I could not reproduce bc it was all totally erratic, so it was a “user issue.” When I demanded someone watch me, he would have lost his teeth if they hadn’t been attached–took less than 10 mins…”There is nothing any user could do that could make that happen.n” They finally believed me. Marriage to an alcoholic for o10 years wasn’t this stressful.

Not happy with it. I have a mac book pro (2011) Everything was running fine, until Foxfire would no longer offer updates. So… I went ahead and upgraded to El Capitan. Now I have freezing issues with display, slow/unresponsive Wifi, Java will not work even though I upgraded, and continuously prompts me to upgrade when I try to use it. Which in turn rendered my Canon printer scanning capabilities useless. I also upgraded the print drivers to try to resolve… nope. In addition, it rendered several other older applications unusable as well. Now I’m concerned about future updates… upgrading to Sierra? Yes or no?

Two OS X El Capitan mail problems (well, two so far after one day of use):

    1. In the mail notifications column, ie, the column that shows the sender and a short preview of the message, the merest touch to the mouse causes the notification text to slide to the right (to reveal a blue panel that switches from “read” to “unread” and marks or removes the blue dot notification accordingly) or — MUCH worse and definitely more dangerous — to the left (to a red panel marked “DELETE” so that, without so much as a click, you’ve deleted message that you haven’t even yet opened or read). Any thoughts as to how to get rid of this sliding abomination?

    2. When you are typing a message and have a complete sentence in parentheses, double spacing after that to start a new sentence automatically inserts another period. (Here’s an example.) . (Oh, fun, this form does the same thing.) . Any ideas on how to solve this? Many thanks.

Why aare the underlined words in a sentance intercepted by Apple Support and tells them to lick a link that brings them to apple support. At least that’s the way it is under the heading is your Elcapitan slow.
