Companies Aiming for Color and 3D for eBook Readers

Some have summarily dismissed stand alone eBook readers as headed for the recycle bin now that the iPad has begun the Tablet/Slate revolution. To some I guess that makes sense. Why have a stand alone device that reads only in black and white when you can read those same eBooks in color on a device that allows you to do other things? That’s not going to stop the innovators though, and I hope it doesn’t because this whole personal mobile/portable device thing is really still in its infancy.

Two companies are looking at those eBook screens and talking about future innovations here of late. The first is Sharp who is talking about a 3D display that can be used on eBook readers and slates of all kind. Nope, you supposedly don’t need the glasses. Pressing a button alternates between 2D and 3D viewing modes.

LiquaVista is looking to bring color to the eBook reading experience with its electrowetting technology. Essentially the technology moves colored oils around within each pixel stimulated by an electric charge.

Don’t look for any of this any time soon, but it will be interesting to keep an eye peeled for where this is all going in the future.
