on

The world is overflowing with Bluetooth accessories, with products like headphones, speakers, keyboards and mice. It’s one of the most popular forms of wireless and most users prefer Bluetooth peripherals over RF wireless simply because there’s no receiver dongle that they have to deal with; they just connect it to their device and off they go.

However, Bluetooth is kind of a scary world for those that are unfamiliar with it. Connecting and pairing Bluetooth devices to your computer, iPhone or iPad can turn out to be a confusing endeavor, but once you know how it works and the steps that it takes to pair a Bluetooth device, it’s easy sailing. In this guide, we’ll show you how to connect a Bluetooth accessory to your iOS 7 device.

Turning on Bluetooth

There are two ways that you can turn on and off your iOS 7 device’s Bluetooth. You can go into the Settings app and tap on Bluetooth in order to enable it, or you can turn it on via Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of the screen and tapping on the Bluetooth logo toward the top of Control Center.

Setting up Your Bluetooth Accessories

Connecting your Bluetooth accessories to your phone or tablet is called “pairing,” so whenever you see that word, that’s what it means. To pair a Bluetooth peripheral to your iOS 7 device, open up the Settings app and tap on Bluetooth. Doing this will automatically make your device “discoverable,” meaning that your iOS 7 device can find any Bluetooth accessories that are currently looking for a device to connect to that are in range.

However, turning on your Bluetooth accessory isn’t enough to pair it with your iPhone or iPad. You have to put it in what’s called “pairing mode.” This will allow it to connect to devices. Every Bluetooth product is different, but most of them require that you hold down the power button long enough for the lights to start blinking. That means it’s in pairing mode. Check the accessory’s manual for specific steps on how to put it in pairing mode.

Once it’s in pairing mode, you should see the accessory show up on your iPhone with “Not Paired” showing up next to it. Just tap on that item and the two devices will begin pairing to each other. Some Bluetooth accessories require a PIN to connect to your iPhone or iPad. You can look this up in the manual of the Bluetooth accessory, but it’s usually an easy PIN like 0000 or 1234. Once you enter that in, the two devices should successfully pair up and you can start using them right away.

From there on out, you can turn on and off Bluetooth whenever your not using it, in order to save battery. Doing this will not erase any saved Bluetooth devices that you’ve paired with your iOS device.
