Dark Souls 3 Release Set for 2016, Allegedly

The rumored Dark Souls 3 release is confirmed in a new report, but the potential release window will come as a huge disappointment for anyone looking to play the game on their Xbox One or PS4 this holiday season.

Video game website IGN, is reporting that materials it received indicate that a Dark Souls 3 release is coming, but not this year as some hoped. In fact, the outlet believes the Dark Souls 3 release date won’t come until 2016, “Early 2016” to be exact.  The outlet says that it got the Dark Souls 3 release window from a single promotional image sent to it by a tipster.

In that picture we see someone wearing an intricate suite of armor and holding a sword. The armor is badly damaged, having been set on fire in a battle of some kind. In the background behind the armored figure is what appears to be a castle sitting on a large bluff overlooking the surrounding area. It’s not necessarily clear if the outlet has separate evidence confirming the Dark Souls 3 release and promotional image are real. The outlet does have a solid reputation in sharing leaked game details.

Dark Souls is a long-running Japanese role-playing game created by video game developer From Software. The last completely new game to arrive in the franchise was Dark Souls 2, which first hit store shelves in 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PS3. From Software and video game publisher Bandai Namco Games improved on that game’s graphics and combined all the downloadable content to create Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, which launched on the Xbox One and PS4 just this past April.

It was only a few weeks ago that rumors indicated Dark Souls 3 would be shown at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, California. Allegedly this Dark Souls 3 release would include a new mechanic that requires players to perform a sacrificial-ritual with a fire, which could be why the figure in the leaked Dark Souls 3 release image is on fire. Reportedly, players are in for a huge new wave of combat, with a whopping 40+ new enemies to fight. 12 new maps four players to explore are included, according to Kotaku.

No doubt, potential Dark Souls 3 buyers are looking for more immersive gameplay, better graphics and improved mechanics from this new game. It’ll also be interesting to if From Software decides to create a version of the game specifically for Xbox 360 and PS3 users so that they don’t have to upgrade to the latest console to experience the new title. Lately, more and more high-profile releases are focusing on the Xbox One and PS4, leaving last-generation console owners out in the cold.

VG247, the same outlet that originally indicated we’d hear about a Dark Souls 3 release during E3 2015, also believes there are some huge changes in personnel for the game. The original Dark Souls was developed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. Miyazaki had a less integral role in the series after Dark Souls, directing the development of Bloodborne an exclusive for Sony’s PS4 gaming console.

Allegedly, he’s back in charge of the series, acting as development lead for Dark Souls 3 from within From Software. Many hope that having him back on the series will spark huge advances in this new game. The problem with this theory about Dark Souls 3 being shown off at E3 2015 is platform. From Software isn’t presenting at the show on its own. Video game journalists haven’t gotten an invitation for a dedicated Dark Souls 3 release reveal either. Some think that the announcement could happen at Sony’s E3 2015 Media Briefing on June 15th.
