Dell Opus One to Succeed 5-Inch Streak

Published

on

It seems that the Streak has just barely launched for the U.S. market and the late-coming Android OS-powered tablet from Dell may soon get a successor by the name of the Opus One. The Dell Streak, with its 5-inch Gorilla Glass display, had straddled the market between large touchscreen smartphone and diminutive tablet, and I personally like it’s size as it’s the perfect convergence size between phone and tablet for me. That said, the Dell Streak had launched with its share of issues–dated operating system and limited availability; the device still is yet to be sold through AT&T and you can only obtain it direct from Dell or via Best Buy. Hopefully, the Opus One, slated as a second-generation Streak, will fix some of those problems by launching with a more current version of Google’s Android operating system–perhaps Gingerbread or even Honeycomb (Android 2.3 or 3.0 respectively)–in May 2011.

As the Streak successor, the Opus One is said to carry the same 5-inch screen, but in the tradition of higher-resolution tablets that are beginning to launch and is found on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, the 5-inch Opus One may up the resolution to 1280 X 800. This means that the Opus One will be even higher resolution than the current generation Galaxy Tab and will pack those pixels tighter in a smaller 5-inch display rather than 7 inches on the Tab.

Information about the Opus One was obtained by a tipster to Streak-dedicated site, Streak Smart. The tipster was present at a small presentation that Dell had given. It’s unclear if Dell will launch the Opus One, but if it does, the device will give other larger devices on the market a run for its money with its display. Given the small space, you can actually still see more on the screen with a higher resolution display, which will be great for web pages and working with spreadsheets and documents. Moreover, the Opus One is said to use a 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU, which should give it ample power to handle the high-resolution screen.
