Dell Streak Going on Sale This Weekend

Published

on

The Dell Streak is going on sale this weekend in Europe and will be available in the U.S. starting next month direct from Dell for $499.  In The U.K.,  O2 will be offering the Streak for £429 without a contract and for free with a mobile broadband contract. The Streak will roll out across Europe later this month.

Dell’s new Android slate device has garnered a lot of attention over the past few month, but now it’s time for consumers to decide if the Streak is going to be a success or not.  I think it’s going to be a tough sale here in the U.S., where Dell hasn’t struck up any partnerships with carriers to subsidize the price tag. Dell’s Ron Garriques told CNet’s Ina Fried that Dell would prefer to sell it through carriers rather than Dell.com.

Dell is marketing the Streak as a slate more so than a phone, though it can certainly be used to place calls and send text messages. One feature that’s pretty intriguing is that it has dual cameras that could potentially be used for mobile video conferencing. Dell’s also promised that Flash 10.1 would be coming to the Streak, along with Froyo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SL9ngNTbzEA&feature=player_embedded

The Dell Streak is definitely an interesting device, but I think it’s going to be an uphill battle for Dell to move a lot of units here in the U.S. at $499.

I could be very interested in this device if I can use it with my ATT sim card that is in my USB 3g dongle. I don’t use the dongle much anymore. Having it in a device like this would be usful.

Is there any wifi/3g hotspot software for android?

Yes, Android devices can be used as hotspots, assuming Dell doesn’t disable the functionality.
Our of curiosity, what draws you to the device primarily? I would love to have a full web browser on a screen larger than my iPhone the go, but the last thing I need is another contract.

Well, I am looking for a device that can use as a document reader for work, pmp and email/webtablet. I already have an ATT usb 3g dongle with an account that I use for work often enough that I wan to keep it. I was thinking what a great idea it would be to combine all of these meager needs into one device. $499 is a little steep in my mind, but I would consider it if I could use my exisitng sim card in the Streak.

The Streak is the same width as my Palm Tungsten E2 and a little thinner. The Streak is the first device rugged and light enough to take the place of my E2 in my shirt pocket. The extra length will make it easier to take in & out of some pockets, and possibly too long for polo shirt pockets.

I considered the N5 (I too use Gragon) – too pricey and heavy for me. I’m not a heavy mobile phone/data user so an unsubsidized purchase is the best for me. The Streak has enough add’l features (wifi, GPS, camera/video, browsing, ebook…) to be attractive even at $500. And since it supports all 5 radio frequencies used in North America, it makes it the most adaptable GSM/3G cell phone.

P.S. Xavier: Do you still use your eVest?

Jenn from Pocketables helped me figure out that besides the bigger screen – the EVO e.g. has better rear camera (8mp over 5mp) which is minor, but also better hardware 1/512 over 512/256 which is important. Not to speak about the 1.6 vs. 2.1 OS version of the EVO.
That said since there is no other product that one can buy unlocked and use lets say in Canada :) with a spare SIM/data plan … I will just have to buy it.
