Diners and Digital Reading Don’t Mix

Published

on

I love having breakfast at a good diner and on this crazy schedule I’m on I get to do that this week.

But reading the morning news or my feeds digitally at a diner just doesn’t work unless you want to fill up your device with the same grease you are pumping into your system.

Maybe diners will be the last bastion of hope for newspapers.

I somewhat disagree. I bring my Kindle to restaurants of all kinds, all the time, when I’m going to be eating alone. Yes, I have to be careful about getting it too close to the food, but I find it small enough and convenient enough to hold one-handed that it’s just fine, most of the time.

Dude, I hope you’re cutting that grease with fruits and veggies sometime during the day. High stress + typical diner food + lack of rest is a very unhealthy combo.

@Sumocat And here, I was going to say I was JEALOUS that he was getting to eat such a hearty, bacon-filled breakfast, when all I had time for this morning was a smoothie from Jamba Juice!

Uncle Mikey: Well, I’m jealous of you. I would walk to Robek’s (I’m not in range of a Jamba Juice) and get a big smoothie every morning if I could.

Here’s a tip if you don’t want to get grease on the Next Page button.
Turn on the Text to Speech (which may turn into a crapshoot soon) and turn the volume all the way down. The pages will auto turn and if to fast or slow, you can speed up or slow down via the TTS controls.

@Jesslyn: I have a Kindle 1 :-) I avoid grease simply by eating right-handed and holding the Kindle in the left. If something compels me to use my left hand, I thoroughly wipe it off before picking up the Kindle again.

Really, I don’t find this any different than I did when I was reading paper. Of course, for newspapers, a lot of people will just read them by leaving them lying on the table, but I never like to look down when reading, so I almost always hold my reading matter in one hand at eye level.

@Sumocat: I’m blessed with a Jamba Juice that’s directly on my morning commute. They’re tasty enough, and almost certainly better for me than a daily dose of eggs, bacon and hash browns…but that doesn’t mean I don’t crave a good old-fashioned Heart Stopper every now and again!
