Droid Bionic Ice Cream Sandwich Update Embarrasses Motorola Again

Published

on

The Motorola Droid Bionic Ice Cream Sandwich update has been embarrassed once again, this time by AT&T and a low-profile device called the Samsung Captivate Glide which has today received its Ice Cream Sandwich update.

AT&T announced the Samsung Captivate Glide Ice Cream Sandwich update on its website and owners of the QWERTY slider are now able to install the update through Samsung’s website.

The update will take the device from Android 2.3 Gingerbread to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich which offers a number of improvements over Gingerbread including a new UI, Face Unlock, a new Browser, and more.

The Droid Bionic ICS update has been embarrassed again.

This update, of course, is the same update that Motorola Droid Bionic owners are still waiting on and the Samsung Captivate Glide is just another low-profile device to get the Ice Cream Sandwich update before the Droid Bionic.

Droid Bionic owners have been waiting for the software for months, ever since Motorola promised to release the software at some point in “early Q3” of this year.

The company began singing a different tune earlier this month, promising Ice Cream Sandwich at some point during Q3. Q3 consists of July, August and September which means that the update should be out this month.

At least one Motorola rep has said that September will be the month that Ice Cream Sandwich for the Droid Bionic rolls out.

The sad part is that the Samsung Captivate Glide, a device that was, like the Droid Bionic, released in 2011, has similar specifications to the Droid Bionic. Dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, plenty of storage.

Of course, that’s not as sad as the fact that the Kyocera Rise, a device sporting a single core processor, a small amount of RAM, and a release date just shy of a year from the Droid Bionic’s own release date was launched with Android 4.0.

These are only two devices in a long list of devices that have already beaten the high-profile Droid Bionic to Ice Cream Sandwich and they probably won’t be the last.

Motorola has promised Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Droid Bionic and at this rate, Motorola would be better off skipping ICS and heading straight to Jelly Bean. The company has said it will give Droid Bionic owners $100 if it doesn’t update the device to Android 4.1.

It used to bother me that its taken this long to get ICS. Like many others my Bionic has had data drop issues and I’ve gotten it replaced by Verizon and the problem still persists. Verizon even told me that ICS would address the issue but had no idea when ICS would be deployed. I stopped being mad about it because, after all, the reality is this phone is over a year old and while we were promised that an update to ICS, the OS is old too. I have a Nexus 7 with JellyBean and I love it. Why would I care about ICS anymore? Moto/Google and Verizon (if they are at fault for anything) have a terrible software update process. The Bionic should have gotten ICS soon after it was released period. Not all this time later. Love the Bionic but who cares about ICS now. I’m moving on.

I’m mot sure if I understand you. Moto update issues? Kidding right? I’ve got a moto xoom32gig simce lasr yesr. How: amy tabs have been sincee. I wont say my OS V but its beyond 4.1 and its mem management and features are powerful not get it out there to give crap performance to devices coded by people with more work:on there plate than you can fathom is not ideal.
How maby iphone OS upgrades has there been? Now how many Droid OS upgrades in the same time space. Dude, An OS. Is not a piece of cake. Apple couldn’t squeeze 1, Android pumped 4~ FOR THE SAME DEVICE.
What OS is to old? Cause you may need to play with cpu snd mem management:with app prioritisation.

    Really?

“Motorola has promised Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Droid Bionic and at this rate, Motorola would be better off skipping ICS and heading straight to Jelly Bean.”

Adam is such a turd! Where is this promise? Oh, in the article he references later in that paragraph? Click the link and the article you are taken to states: “Motorola did not identify which devices won’t get a Jelly Bean update or when the cutoff will be.” and “These devices MAY include the following Motorola smartphones.”

So Adam, before you state something make sure your facts are straight. Enjoying your GED? Is this the best you could do with it? You just enjoy spreading false information and rumors huh?

      Here is the promise:

      https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/ci/documents/detail/2/motorola-jelly-bean-rebate_en-US

It says phones first offered in 2011 would get Jelly Bean or a $100 credit if it does not come, which does include the Bionic.

so saying that “phones first offered in 2011 would get jellybean or $100 if it does not come” does not make sense. that is like saying he will win the game but he may also lose. she is very tall but she could also be very short. it still does not say anything in stone. bionic is eligible for JB because it first became available in 2011, but vzw may not decide to upgrade it due to newer phones being released and the bionic not being part of their flagship series (i.e. the razr phone line). so i would not say that the bionic is promised to get the JB update – i would say it is eligible, but still may not happen.

i am not retarded, i am a little slow, but i may be fast…so i am, uh, yup! :-D

Droid Bionic was actually “THE FLAGSHIP PHONE FOR VERIZONS 4GLTE NETWORK. IT’S THE FIRST 4GLTE PHONE OFFERED BY VERIZON.” This quote has been all over the net since the phone was released, even on the Verizon website. So to say that “Bionic not being part of their flagship series.” is completely inaccurate. The Droid Bionic started Verizon’s 4GLTE Network.

And they better give us more than $100, everyone bought this phone because it was “Guaranteed” the newest software updates on the network and we have yet to see them, a whole year after the release, and after being promised ICS, we’re all still waiting.

I have an eMail from a Verizon Rep guaranteeing me ICS by Christmas of 2011, which was the only reason I bought the phone, and we still don’t have anything close to it. I paid almost $700 for this phone, because I don’t buy their 2 year contracts, I purchase all my phones off the shelf, and I’m still waiting, whether it be for ICS or even a public apology, the waiting sucks.

And to top it all off, they tell us we “may not be eligible for JB”. I’ve checked the specs and minimum requirements for JB and the Bionic far exceeds the minimums for that OS. So we better get that Upgrade also, or I know a lot of people who will be dumping Verizon on their heads and switching networks.

    Adam;

When your advertisers realize they’re getting probably click throughs on their ads, they’ll drop you until you find another topic to echo other site’s info. I admit I have looked until I realize I got smoke and mirrors about Bionic updates.

FACT: Moto is technically late on their estimate. Software happens. I’d rather have it working than quick.

FACT: Moto has optioned to come clean and make good on it giving Jelly Bean on qualified devices.

Why do they make me wait soooooo long for the ics 4.0 update? I could have waited a few months and gotten the better Razr Maxx that has better battery talk time than the Bionic. I waited so long for the Bionic to come out after delays, and then now I have to wait for the software upgrade to ics 4.0. Geez. Very disappointed, except that Gingerbread seems to do most everything I want to do with a phone.
