Droid Incredible Gingerbread Update Rolling Out Once Again

Published

on

If you own an HTC-made Droid Incredible, then you are probably aware that the manufacturer and the phone’s carrier, Verizon, kind of sort of rolled out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update back in September. Some people were able to get it and then the update up and disappeared without any sort of explanation. Well, it appears that the software has made its return as Droid Incredible owners are reporting seeing a new update arrive on their devices.

Yes folks it’s back and hopefully HTC and Verizon were able to work out the kinks that some users saw and some didn’t back when it first appeared. From what we’re hearing, the update works great so kudos to the companies for getting it done.

Still, we could have done without the silence.

Droid Incredible

If you weren’t able to get the first update, you’ll get that first followed by the smaller 8.6MB update that will bring your phone up to speed.

It should be smooth sailing from there.

Received Android 2.3.4 on my Incredible this morning. But it was build 4.06 rather than build 4.08. Did not previously receive 4.06.

Low memory icon and message is now there. Also, SD card
    apps “don’t exist.”

Re-downloading apps and then moving them to
the SD card re-establishes the app, including access from their existing home
screen shortcuts. Most apps restored this way seem to retain their
settings, etc. However, at least one required a re-sync with its server.

Also, Sprint is showing in Market, and Verizon is gone. Thanks, Verizon. Tried shutting down, pulling the battery and the SD card, but that didn’t
help. Also tried unmounting the SD card first, and that also didn’t
help. I’ve pinged VZWSupport on Twitter, asking if the push of the 4.06 build is normal, with a subsequent push of 4.08 is imminent, but so far I’ve not received a reply from VZW.

I received the Gingerbread update (Build #4.06.605.3 NOT the 4.08.605.2 Build # Verizon is advertising) pushed out from Verizon on the morning of Tuesday 11/15 and my Droid Incredible immediately went haywire. I got “low memory,” and “low storage,” notifications (which in turn would not allow my bluetooth and email and other notifications to download or work properly), despite there being plenty of free space, some of my icons appeared stacked on top of other icons on my home screens, other icons would appear multiple times or just disappear completely, and quite humorously, Verizon was removed from the Market, and replaced by SPRINT! After doing some research online, I figured out that this update I received was actually the original Gingerbread update Verizon began pushing out back in September (which I never received), but then pulled because of these glitches, and I learned that they would be pushing that update 1st to those who never got it, and then push out a fix. Sure enough, late that same night, I got prompted to download another Gingerbread update, supposedly to fix the problems of the 1st one. I initiated the update, and then my phone told me that I did not have enough space and would have to clear message and mail data and remove apps, and then proceed with the update. I did precisely that, and got rid of the low space message, however, once I freed up tons of space, I was no longer prompted to receive the update, and the OTA has not been available to me again since. I did a soft reset, and even tried to reprogram the roaming capabilities, but neither helped. I contacted Verizon, who claimed it was their 1st time hearing of the Sprint Market issue (despite me reading about it online), and the Verizon rep apologized and contacted HTC for a 3 way conference call. HTC was absolutely NO help. The HTC rep just listened to my issues and said that I basically just had to wait for the update to push out again and that it “eventually” would. He said he had “no idea of a timeframe,” but it “shouldn’t take more than 2 weeks,” adding that “it could happen later tonight.” Contrary to what others with similar problems have stated Verizon told them, Verizon stated to me that I could NOT go to a Verizon store to get the software manually updated, and like HTC said, I would have to wait for the OTA. As for my current glitches, the HTC rep recommended I do a factory reset in the meantime, something I am dead set against doing since I just had to do one on this phone just 3 weeks ago, and had to do another several months ago. (Another thing absolutely ridiculous considering I’ve had the phone for just a year and 2 weeks). I have to say, I loved my HTC Incredible when I 1st got it, and thought HTC had a customer for life, but the issues I’ve had with this phone, and the lack of proper customer service/resolutions has me DYING to jump ship! There’s no way I’m doing yet another factory reset, especially when Ice Cream Sandwich is about to come out and I will be getting a new phone…Don’t think I’ll ever be coming back to HTC.

I got the first update back in Sept. and it caused all kinds of problems.  Verizon told me that I couldn’t reverse the update so I told them I wanted a new phone.  They sent me one without the update and it works fine now, but now they are trying to make me update again and I’m seeing others having problems with it already.  Is there anyway to not do this update and also stop all the update notices from popping up?

This happened to me, too, except no one at Verizon knew what happened and what to do about it.  They flat out denied it even happened at the time.  Very skeptical about any updates now until I can be assured they have their (HTC and Verizon) crap together.  Can’t seem to get the notifications to stop.

Hey everyone I found someone who had the solution.  At least it worked for me.

“Okay, I have fended several issues just getting Gingerbread Baked!  The first update was deployed 11/15/11 with no issues. This was build 4.06 On 11/16/11 the second update (4.08) attempted install and failed with the dreaded “Low Space” error.  After that, I got stuck in the eternal non-reboot issue.  To get this out of the way: Disclaimer, I do not take responsibility for your device.   But… It seemed to be a pretty simple fix for me.Remove any unused apps you can.  These can be reinstalled later!Boot into recoveryPress and hold Power, Choose “Restart” option
When screen turns off, press and hold Volume Down and PowerWhen the white HBOOT screen appears, use the volume button to move down to “RECOVERY.”
Press the Power button to select “RECOVERY.”
When the triangle and exclamation appears, hold the Volume Up and Power button at the same time.
Using the volume button, scroll down to “Wipe cache partition” and select it.
Select “Reboot system now”When the system restarts, go to Settings>About Phone>System Updates.  Chances are the update is NOT there.Go to Settings>Set Time & Date.  UNCHECK “Use Network Time”Reset your clock for 1 MONTH aheadGo back to Settings>About Phone>System UpdatesYou should get the update now and it should install and reboot flawlessly. Hope this helps.”

It worked for me as well. Initially when I checked if System Updates was available it still said it was up to date. I closed it and reopened it and then it was available. Thanks. Better than waiting for another push from Verizon!
