Droid RAZR & Droid RAZR MAXX Ice Cream Sandwich Bug Fix Update Rolling Out in August?

Published

on

Those looking for a time table for the upcoming Motorola Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX Ice Cream Sandwich bug fix update should circle August in pencil on the calendar as that appears to be a possible month for the software’s release.

A source has told us that the bug fix update, which we reported was in the works, might be rolling out sometime during the month of August.

We weren’t given a specific date but we were told that the Droid RAZR ICS bug fix update would, at the earliest, arrive in the middle of August.

Greater odds were given to the end of August for a roll out.

A Droid RAZR ICS bug fix update could arrive in August.

In any event, Verizon is apparently hard at work trying to fix what the Ice Cream Sandwich update broke and we should have a more firm timeline to share in the days ahead.

In the meantime, owners can try clearing the cache on the Droid RAZR or Droid RAZR MAXX in order to try and solve some of the issues. We’ve heard from several people who have seen noticeable improvement after performing the fix.

Read: How to Fix Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX Ice Cream Sandwich Issues.

Clearing the cache likely won’t solve all of the problems that Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX owners have been having but it should work to help stabilize the device.

As we’ve said, the fact that the Motorola Droid RAZR Ice Cream Sandwich updates are plagued with bugs isn’t surprising. It’s clear that both Motorola and Verizon came down to the wire trying to meet Motorola’s imposed Q2 deadline for the update.

The carrier originally announced a June 22nd roll out date for the updates but it became clear soon after that it was a soak test rather than a full on roll out.

Most Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX owners saw the update roll out on the last day of June and since then, we have heard from numerous owners who have been dealing with issues caused by the update. And that means they’ve been hoping for an update to arrive sooner rather than later.

Better temper those expectations though, it looks like it’s going to be August at the earliest.

I did a factory reset a few days after the ICS rollout, and the few issues I had cleared up completely. I fully appreciate that Verizon will address other issues that users may be experiencing. However, does anyone know if they intend to implement a solution that involves another factory reset? It was a LOT of work recustomizing, reinstalling apps, and recovering data after that reset, and I do not have the time or patience to do that again any time soon. I just want to use the phone for what it is designed to do (phone, email, text, web browsing, camera and music). I do not live to customize and fiddle with apps and settings. If this were the plan I would be livid. It would be a major inconvenience. Please tell me that is not the idea. Makes me boil thinking of it. Am I alone? Please Verizon (if you are listening), have a heart. Thanks all.

I agree totally. My RZr Mxx has next to no battery life now. Had great before. Very spotty to make phone call usually have to power off and then on to be able to connect. Most likely lot more issues, but as of right now I keep it off except for times I feel I must have it on. Don’t think having to do a reset or wipe should be a requirement for an update. Trying to get 50+ (me)to use profit making data using smart phones and introducing an update like this?
      WTF????????

As an update: Called VZW CS yesterday. Got battery to last a lot longer…..by booting to safe mode and leaving it like that. Is this a fix? Like saying my car vibrates above 40 MPH, solution = don’t go over 40 MPH.

my phone took two restarts to work out this fix even before ICS so it may take a second time but luckily I thought to try mine twice in a row so I didn’t have to go through the customizing twice. best of luckily when I upgraded to ICS mine is fine… only trying to see how to put back my camera feature so I can take pics without unlocking again it was great for me with two kids I love to take pics…

      Henry,
They are not sending you a new phone, it is only a different phone. They claim to test phones like yours and mine and then send them out as replacements. What you are getting is someone else’s problem phone and someone else will get yours. If you call enough and are persistent I think you will eventually get an opportunity for a different manufacturers used phone. I keep demanding a partial credit each month due to the issues that came with the firmware upgrade. So far not successful on that front but my next call is to the Public Service Commission that has some pull with the wireless carriers as they don’t want under their rule. Like previous posters I don’t have the time to re-customize my phone after every hard reset. It takes hours to get it back to where it was. Good Luck.

Correct, but when I had my 1st Bionic, I kept having problems with every replacement I got. I finally had enough & talked to customer retention (I forget what they’re called, but when you ask them to disconnect your service, they send you there). I told them it’s stay if they send me a NEW phone, & not a refurbished one. I kept getting phones with pixles missing, white spots, etc.. They agreed to send me a brand new phone, & I got it. It came in brand new packaging, not that genetic box. It came with new battery & cover. They told me it want necessary to return the old phone, but I did anyway because I didn’t want there to be a misunderstanding.

My Razr Maxx received the ICS update yesterday morning and it was a complete fail. It immediately started to bug out and restarted numerous times. It was completely unstable and would not even allow the phone to charge, even though the icon indicated that it was charging. It also became very hot. I took it to verizon and all they suggested was to do a hard reset, but the phone was so unstable, the clerk couldn’t even do a HR. They ordered me a replacement, which I should get tomorrow. The update basically turned my razr maxx into a high-tech paperweight as it totally drained the battery and won’t recharge. I was extremely disappointed, especially reading all the great reviews online and the whole marketing that motorola put out as well. I so wish I just ignored the update. My phone worked great on gingerbread….I hope motorola, verizon, and google get their $hit together and put better quality updates out for the consumers…..uuuugggghhhhh!!!

Same here, no commercial email anymore…

Had to setup bookmarks to go to the pop3 site to pull emails. And setup forwarding so I can get a text notification that I got mail. What a pain.

Just a quick note in passing I had most of the issues that are stated above before I got ICS and the only way to fix was to do a reset though it didn’t work the first time it took twice for it to take then it worked fine and at this time did the update to ICS yesterday as it prompted me to and it is still running ok so far just a bit hotter than normal and no more instant camera on button which is what I was searching to see if i could find a way to put back by hand. Lol …. when I found this site…

Got my razr maxx about a month before ics came down. I did the upgrade immediately as soon as it came out. I had no problems just the slightest drop in battery performance. I suspect conflicts with apps causing your problems. The software worked fine for me.

I made the mistake of upgrading to Ice Cream Sandwich on my DR Maxx, now my corporate mail does not work. Get the following message:

“Couldn’t finish. You typed an incorrect server address or the server requires a protocol version that Email doesn’t support.”

Called Verizon 3 times to be escalated to 2nd level tech support who in turn referred me to Motorola. Motorola was not able to assist either but did give me a case # to follow up. I’ll be calling Monday morning.

Yes I made the mistake of not taking a backup of Gingerbread.

I’ve had no issues with the battery life or apps restarting. My issue is Wifi keeps disconnecting and takes much, much long to initially establish a connection. I’m just using cell data which still works.

I am so glad I Googled ICS update before accepting the update to ICS on my RAZR.

I will stay with Gingerbread until I see that they have fixed all the issues. I just don’t get why everyone was in such a rush for a few extra bells and whistles, versus having a stable platform to work from.

I have had my phone freeze twice on me since the update…noticed my battery life is diminished. My 3g or 4g us spotty at best an my wifi is hit or miss.Did they get anything right?

I have an issue (among too many to list) with the google play store (what a juvenille name). Anyway the app keeps freezing up on me. Anyone else?
Lately I’ve noticed that anything Verizon has its hands in turns to SHIT. Then when you call to get some help they pass the buck and connect you to motorola? WTF, I am paying Verizon. When you talk to Moto. they just want to get information from you about their phones. They do not care about their customers. THIS IS MY LAST MOTOROLA PHONE!

    • Al

      07/20/2012 at 9:44 am

This upgrade is unfortunate. I really liked my Motorola Droid Razr Maxx phone, but if I do not have the functionality that was working prior to the ICS update, then it is useless to me. Very frustrating as every time I contact Motorola even though I have a lvl 3 ticket open, I have to endure the same questions on 1st and 2nd lvl support as if was a new case.

I tell the them that I have a lvl 3 ticket and they say they can’t, they have a process. When I finally get done with lvl 2 they indicate someone from lvl 3 will call me within 24hrs. That is 3 times I have endured 20 – 30 minutes on the phone with lvl 1-2, but have only spoken to lvl 3 once and they did not have a resolution.

All I have to say is that us as consumers have many more choices available and to keep sending us to offshore call centers and giving us the run around is not a solution that we will take kindly too. Motorola take note, Netflix loss almost a million customers in a month are you prepared to lose a significant market share to Apple, Samsung and HTC?

Well this is day 7 since I did the update followed by a Factory (hard) reset. I just wanted to report my Razar maxx has had zero issues since I did that.. all my app’s work fine an the battery life is as good if not better than before. with minimal data usage its still on 50% after 23 hours. I totally understand the frustration most of you are going through. I am a little confused as to why you are blaming Motorola however ICS isn’t there operating system. That’s like blaming HP because something on Windows crashed.. Just my opnion

Curious what you want them to fix ? My flash player works fine. have you researched it at all to see if anyone else has your problem and fixed it? Personally I don’t want them fixing something that isn’t broken on my phone. day 8 ICS still rocks

Ok I went to both sites everything worked perfect. I know I sound like a broken record but did you do a factory reset after you loaded the ICS update? I had issues like everyone else till I did that..now i have none of them so far..my battery life is as good if not better than before ..all my apps run .. etc. etc.

I have to agree with Mike.
We can’t blame Verizon or Motorola. This is a Google update. Verizon and Motorola I’m sure are working desperately to fix any bugs. I have the Razr and fortunately have had nothing but a pleasant experience with ICS, and I am truly sorry for those having issues but let’s put the blame where it lies. Google hypes us all up for a new updates. The carriers and manufactures feel pressured to roll it out to the consumers as quickly as possible. Then when something goes wrong , everyone freaks out at the wrong people. How about Google starts keeping this hush hush and then surprise us with something that works.

I have a Droid Razr and had been putting the ICS update off for about a week, simply because whenever the “push” came to my phone, I wasn’t in a position to allow it. I finally let it upgrade Saturday and after nearly 48 hours, I’ve not noticed any issues. Everything seems to work just fine and I like the new features I’ve encounterd this far. Maybe I’m just lucky or maybe I’m not using many of the features that some of you are.

Since the ICS update I am unable to add events to my calender by touching the date and then selecting add event. My monthly calendar does not resond to any touch. Anyone else having calendar issues? I don’t want to have to hand input the date ever time I want to add an event. It works on “week view”…however when I have it set to week view it doesn’t open to the current week…opens to the first week of the month and then have to click the calendar icon in the other corner to get to the current week! If I set it to open to “day view” it opens to July 1st and I have to click the calendar icon for the current day!!! Any suggestions???

Finally gave up on the Razr. I upgraded to the Razr almost exactly 2 weeks before the ICS release, so Verizon will not let me return it for another “working” phone. However, it is worth the hundreds I spent on an iPhone (my first choice anyway) to get something reliable NOW.

Thanks, Motorola/Verizon. You have my assurance I will never consider Motorola again and will actually shop around when my Verizon contract is up. Nice work!

      07/26/2012 at 9:28 am

droid. Just wondering what your opinion is on the subject. Who is to blame here? Google, Motorola or Verizon. Or the end user for updating the phone?

      • droid

        07/26/2012 at 10:28 am

I blame Google to be honest. Listen I came from sprint which I despise for their lack of knowledgeable customer service agents to their poor cell phone service as a whole. They were last to update any phone. I believe all carriers push out as fast as they can because they want to satisfy us impatient customers. So we blame Motorola, why because they are trying to make their customers happy by giving us the update we are all whining for? Why should we? Maybe we shouldn’t whine and let them take their time and make sure its going to work with a particular phone. But no we jump ship and change carriers out of frustration or return our phone for one we think is perfect. ….gee like 3he nexus line, the Google line of phones, go figure. In all actuality, its blame between Google for mass pushing out an upgrade to hundreds of different styles of phones that it may or may not work with, and that’s the only advantage apple has with their iPhone, and the consumer for always needing the best of the best, forcing manufactures and cell phone companies to push something out that may not be ready. If we would all relax, look at the fact we have awesome working phones that do their job, so what if don’t have the latest and greatest os ? I’m sure not complaining. And so what if my phone doesn’t run jelly bean. I have this phone for the next 2 years. I’m not going to run out and trade it in every 6 months because my phone is now considered outdated. If you have a phone that isn’t responding to an update, call your carrier. See if they have reverse the update or give you a phone you can run on gingerbread again. Why hoot and holler at Motorola that you’ll never buy a phone from then again. Makes me laugh, last time I checked, they weren’t responsible for creating the new os ,just responsible for trying to get it to us spoiled customers. If they didn’t release it we’d moan, if they do and it doesn’t work,we moan. Get over it people and be glad you own a cell phone. Geez, what did you all do back in the day without them?

          07/26/2012 at 4:38 pm

droid, Thank you for that response. I unfortunately am on the receiving end of, “I upgraded my phone and now it doesn’t work, fix it now!” I am impacted as well, but I can live without having 24×7 access to my Corporate email.

            07/26/2012 at 5:10 pm

Al, can totally understand your frustration there. Obviously we download these updates and trust that they will work when they are installed. I’m also inclined to believe that some are having issues because ics somehow has a bad interaction with an app we have on our phones. THink about it. My husband and I have had the same identical phones. We had our share of apps on them. When we updated last year to gingerbread, his whacked out and mine was fine. He also had twice as many apps on his phone as mine. Also he was able to run one app perfectly on his phone and it always forced closed on mine. Again, probably having a bad reaction with some other app on my phone. Have you tried wiping the honey clean, and seeing how it works? Could be an app that doesn’t like Ics. Had to factory reset my old phone and add each app back with trail NFL error.

I am very concerned about the update Ice Cream sandwich. I use my phone all the time for work. This has made it very difficult because of all the errors. I dont have good cell phone coverage. I have horrible battery life and it does a horrible job with email
It doesnt seperate work to personal emails as it did before. The key board is horrible and doesnt type well and has a mind of its own. Plus the color scheme used throughout the program is god awful. At this point i would rather use my old phone that wasnt a smart phone. I am a business man I understand that you were pressured to release something for end of Q2 results but you are making your customers suffer for the irresponsible release of Ice cream sandwich. Please fix issues ASAP. I apologize for all the typos but you can Thank Ice cream sandwich for that. I was anti Iphone before the release of Ice cream sandwich but starting to feel that might be the best option Sincerely concerned customer.
