DROID Turbo Lollipop Problems & Fixes

Published

on

After months of waiting the Motorola DROID Turbo Android 5.1 Lollipop update is finally rolling out from Verizon Wireless delivering a number of new features, and a brand new look. The changelog details everything that’s new from Android 5.1 and the material design UI, but it also brought with it a few problems, not to mention some outstanding issues remain unsolved.

At the end of October last year the DROID Turbo was released just a week before Android 5.0 Lollipop debuted. This made the update take longer than many wanted, but it’s finally here. The device launched with a few bugs, many of which are still present after the Android 5.1 Lollipop update. Here we aim to address a few of them, look for others, and offer a few potential fixes.

Read: DROID Turbo Android 5.1 Update: What to Expect

For most the Motorola DROID Turbo Android 5.1 update has been a very smooth process, while others have been experiencing problems. It improved the overall look and feel, battery life, camera performance, and delivers Google’s material design, but there’s also some issues that will need to be fixed in future updates.

We’ve received multiple comments from DROID Turbo owners that are enjoying the update and have mostly positive comments, but there have also been complaints about installation problems, WiFi issues, poor battery life, slow data speeds, slow Turbo Charging, and some other small general problem.

With all Android updates the potential for issues is somewhat big, especially with such a huge visual and behind the scenes update like Android 5.1 Lollipop. The best advice would be to do a factory data reset and update with a fresh slate, but that’s not realistic for most as it completely wipes the smartphone and all apps, data, and information.

With that in mind, here’s a few details about the DROID Turbo Android 5.1 update, and a couple of problems that have been surfacing in forums and over at XDA Developers.

Turbo Android 5.1 Installation Problems

Some owners have reported problems when trying to actually accept, download, and install the Android 5.1 update. A few reports claimed the download never finished, and got stuck at a certain point. Verizon and Motorola both recommend downloading the software over a WiFi connection, which is owners first move.

Motorola recommends at least 50% battery life and a fast stable connection to complete the download. Users should reboot their device, charge it to at least 50% (we’d recommend 100%) and try installing the update again by going to settings > about phone > and tapping the check for updates button to begin the download again.

Alternatively, users can follow this guide to manually download and flash the DROID Turbo Android 5.1 Lollipop update, with a little know-how and some patience.

DROID Turbo WiFi Problems

Both before the update, and after, many owners have complained about WiFi issues, instability, drops and more. This has been an ongoing issue for the DROID Turbo, but should be fixed with Lollipop. There’s a few small changes that could improve the experience.

For one, owners should head into Settings > WiFi > and forget the network of choice. This will let you resign in, enter the password, and start with a clean slate for the connection, which should fix any drops and instabilities.

There is a single speaker on the front of the Droid Turbo, but that's powerful enough.

Users have also reported WiFi hangs, or slows down, which could be due to a setting where WiFi doesn’t stay on when the screen sleeps, to improve battery life. Go to Settings > WiFi then tap the menu option at the top. Navigate to Advanced and under the keep WiFi on during sleep option, make sure it’s set to Always.

Last but not least this could be a router issue with the home WiFi. Try unplugging your home router power cord for more than 10 seconds, or even a minute, then reconnect and let it reboot. Then re-sign into your WiFi on the DROID Turbo.

DROID Turbo Bluetooth Problems

While we’ve yet to experience any problems using Bluetooth on the DROID Turbo, even after Lollipop, this is another problem we’ve seen surface more than a few times. The first step is to toggle Bluetooth off and back on.

Many users have complained that while working out, running, or just general motion the Bluetooth seems to struggle and streaming audio cuts in and out, and other things. AndroidAuthority suggests turning off all Moto Active features, and make sure to turn off WiFi as well, as it could be interfering with Bluetooth.

Again, we’ve had no problems with Bluetooth so haven’t needed to find a solution, and most likely this is just a compatibility issue with some vehicles or Bluetooth devices.

Turbo Charging Slower After Lollipop

The DROID Turbo has a feature called turbo charging, or Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 that lets it charge quicker than most devices. Something we’ve seen from recent Samsung, LG, and other devices. However, users are claiming that after Android 5.1 the Turbo Charging doesn’t charge as fast.

There’s no solution to this at the moment, and we’ve reached out to Verizon and Motorola for additional details, and will report back once we know more. Are you experiencing slower charging speeds since updating to Android 5.1 Lollipop?

DROID Turbo Performance

The DROID Turbo has a fast powerful processor and plenty of RAM, and along with the efficient Android 5.1 Lollipop it should run incredible fast and smooth. Overall most reports are positive, but with any big update like this problems are likely to arise.

Updating the entire system to something like Android 5.1 Lollipop could leave some remnants of the older software, apps, junk and more. As a result, our best advise before a full system factory reset would be to clear the cache on the device. This can be done two ways. Users can also clear app cache, and then system cache using a more advanced method.

Beginners can download an app called Clean Master. This will clear all update and random files that are not only taking up space, but fragmenting your device storage and slowing down performance.

However the best route is to actually boot the device into a safe area called the recovery, and clear the system cache. Instructions for this are available from Motorola, or follow the instructions below.

  • With the phone powered off, press the VOL DOWN KEY for 2-3 seconds then POWER key then release.
  • The device will display different BOOT OPTIONS
  • Use the VOL DOWN Key to SCROLL to Recovery and POWER Key to select

If the device reboots, you may have waited to long to make a selection, you will need to begin the process again.

  • The device will display the Motorola logo and then the Android in distress ( logo with Exclamation mark)
  • Press and hold the VOL UP key for 10-15 seconds. While still holding the VOL UP key tap and release the POWER key
  • Use the VOL DOWN Key to scroll to wipe cache partition and the POWER Key to select this option

After this the device will wipe and clear the entire cache partition and clear all those update files and other system files. It will reboot and power up as normal. Be extremely careful not to hit the wipe all data and factory reset, as this will erase the entire device. We only want to wipe the cache partition.

Factory Data Reset

With big updates such as Android 5.1 Lollipop, I usually do a factory data reset so the device starts with a clean and clear slate. This will erase all user data, and put the device in a “factory” out of box state. As a result users will want to backup all their data first, then proceed. This is a last resort of the problems are enough to warrant a full wipe.

Read: How to Backup Android in 5 Easy Steps

To factory reset the DROID Turbo head into Settings > Backup & Reset > Factory Data Reset > and tap Reset Phone. This will completely erase everything, reboot, and start fresh. Users can then use the new Android 5.0 Lollipop restore function to download all previously used apps. The new Tap n Go restore works great, if you have another device to restore from, or hit the drop-down option and select your DROID Turbo, and restore all apps from your Google sync account.

So far we’re hearing mostly positive comments about the DROID Turbo Android 5.1 Lollipop update. However, if you’re experiencing issues try some of the fixes above, or drop us a comment below with the problems you may be having.

Just got the Turbo a week ago, and was hesitant because of the lack of update. To my surprise, it was out sooner than I thought I would have to wait! I guess for me, I dont know any different, since I had just barely gotten things set up on the phone to begin with. But so far, I love the phone and have not had any issues with the installation, wifi or any of the other issues mentioned here.

Wrong instructions for wiping cache partition. Correct instructions found here. https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-117345/

The instructions differ in how to proceed AFTER you select “Recovery Options” from the boot menu.
In this article it tells you to “Press and hold the VOL UP key for 10-15 seconds. While still holding the VOL UP key tap and release the POWER key”

In the verizon article Martin French linked it says “From the ‘Android system recovery’ screen (Android figure lying on his back), press and hold the Power button then press and release the Volume Up button to display the menu options.”

The difference being which buttons you press to proceed. I believe it depends on what Android version you have because I remember needing to do the prior (holding Vol Up, then pressing Power) while still running KitKat, but then now I need to hold Power then press Vol Up after I have upgraded to Lollipop.

So if you are not able to get to the Wipe Cache Partition part, try both ways.

Thank you for your post. The instructions in the latter part of your last paragraph were spot-on; even the instructions on Verizon’s website seemed to incorrect….tried them about 6 separate times.

After you’ve upgraded to Lollipop, you do indeed need to hold the Power button, then tap the Vol Up button to unlock the “blue” menu where “clear partition cache” is an option.

When I downloaded the 5.1 update the was nothing but problems. First the internet tabs being with the app tabs when I have over 80 internet tabs makes it hard to find a surtin tab. Also all of the internet video players now require flash player 9 so I can watch my videos like I always could.

How do I uninstall 5.1 and go back to the previous operating system?

      • Spikoli

        01/09/2016 at 9:19 pm

Easy, do a factory reset. Of course, after a short while of doing that, the system will want to update you again to 5.1 – no way around that. You’ll need to ignore the request to update if you do not want 5.1 to be installed again.

I just installed 5.1 and it absolutely sucks! How do I uninstall 5.1 and go back to the previous operating system?

      07/25/2015 at 12:12 pm

Eric, I feel your frustration about the new windows tab. However, try and limit your internet viewing to only a few pages. This way you don’t have 80 open along with apps which can be a nightmare. Sorry about the update needed for videos. Maybe you could stay away from the adult sites and that will cut down on the pages you have open, the videos of crazy things, and your battery can take a break.

Gavriel, Once you update to a new OS (lollipop), you cannot go back to the old Operating System. Unless you “break” your phone which severely limits the help that you can receive from the support desk.

After lollipop 5.1 update on my Droid Turbo, the Moto Approach feature no longer works. I’ve ensured it’s checked in the Moto settings. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

For the slow charge. I’ve had that problem until I discovered that if you turn it off and changing, let it charge for a little bit and then turn it back on, it should be back to normal. It worked for me. See if that works for anyone else. And no I didn’t use the charger it came with.

My problem is that when I’m on the phone people on the other end can’t hear me. The phone call starts out fine then my voice gets cut off. I need to cycle the mute option on and off for the other person to hear me again.

I also have this issue, I can’t hear caller but they can hear me. Happens after call established, time it happens after varies. For me, mostly in vehicle or in building. VZW signal always shows good…

Since my update I can no longer get to any hotel or even McDonald’s WiFi if I have to login through the website. I’m getting annoyed because my work and school were always a breeze to connect now I can’t.

    • Brad

      07/10/2015 at 4:33 am

I’m having the same issue. WiFi networks that originally redirected me to a login page aren’t doing so. Pretty annoying seeing as how I’m staying at a hotel the next couple weeks for work.

My battery life is now awful. I get 3 hours maximum before I have to recharge, I have turned on all the battery savers etc. it was great before. I want to uninstall and go back to the last version. Any ideas?

    • rbwork Word

      07/10/2015 at 7:08 am

My issue is the same as Samantha and my Droid Turbo since Android 5.1 update stays warm to hot all the time. I work a job that provides me with a company provided Samsung S5 with Android 5.0, and my droid turbo sits in my desk draw most of the day. By the end of the day with me using the S5 all day I still have 70% of battery left, but my Droid Turbo with no use battery level is down to 48% and its warm to touch. I already did a cache cleaning from boot, uninstalled all downloaded apps, and even disable bloatware but no success so far so I’m ready to do a factory reset but am still looking for answers before doing so, because of reading others have done this but still have the issue. Motorola! we need some help…

I’m having the same problem. No fixes have worked. Don’t like change in keyboard, either. Or the changed auto words when typing. This upgrade appears to be a disaster. Good way to send folks to iPhone. I’m sorry I changed to Droid Turbo. Thing I liked the most was fast charging & long battery life! They couldn’t just leave a good thing alone!

I’m with you Lawyer! My wife talks on her phone 12 hours a day, it used to go 12 hours before needing a charge. Now it’s about 1/2. Her voice commands no longer work. 5.1 is total Crap!

My issue is with Chrome’s start up page. The page where it displays your 6 most visited sites. When I click one of them to navigate to the site, Chrome loads the name in the address bar and then does nothing. If I long press and select open in new tab it works. Very frustrating to be forced to use that many tabs for no reason.

I can barely get mine to charge….been docked for 2 hours and I am only at 26%…..I am not sure it will ever be back to 100%. Up until Thursday (when I did the update). My charge would last all day and usually still have 20-30% by bedtime. Yesterday, it was dead by 7pm. This really has me concerned and wishing I had not installed the update. I don’t have anywhere to plug in and charge up except at bedtime.

      04/12/2016 at 4:23 pm

I feel your pain. Nothing but regular, sloooooow charging since the update. Motorola just pretends it doesn’t exist. I begged them to look into their files and see what happened with others that reported the same issue and they refused. Wouldn’t even let me talk to a supervisor. Just a note: It’s not the charger. I just bought a brand new one and that’s not the problem.

I found a solution to the WiFi Disconnect problem. I switched my router to manual Channel selection. I only use my 5G connection. I set the channel to 165.
I was disconnecting 6 plus times a day or night. Now I’m disconnecting 1 or 2 times a week. So very improved but still not a total fix.

This is a terrible article designed to draw to ads! And all of these comments are so misleading. I did the upgrade and everything is great! If it is not great, do a complete reset of course. But I’ve had zero problems, and the phone is amazing. I’ve had Samsung phones for years and they seem to crawl after a few days of usage. Loving the turbo! Very “snappy”. Loving the lollipop. I dot a notification that Google app has crashed periodically. But it does not seem to affect anything… Lots of crybabies posting here.

I hate the droid lollipop update….it took key features away on my email widget such as the search icon, it also will not allow me to silence my phone any more it either rings or vibrates but i can no longer get it to NOT do either like i could before.

I also cant restart my phone i can only power it off…..

    this update sucks

I am having same problem with my email widget — no search icon — no search ability.
Also – on loudest, can’t hear phone ring in my handbag.
Also – airplane switch, etc. now all in settings rather than on handset — so to turn off the phone for a flight, you first have to turn it on and then the flight attendants scream at you.

You all need to back everything up , and do a factory reset. My phone was so slow battery performance, ect… I backed up and factory reset. Then went to cloud and restored everything. Now it’s back blazing fast with extremely long battery life. No guarantee but it did work for me.

I installed the update and now it won’t let me type in the code to unlock my phone (not the sim card which is a different screen — my phone is encrypted as required by using google something or other). it doesn’t seem to recognize that there’s even a keyboard pulled up. NOTHING registers. And I can’t get the other steps to work on the phone..

I held off as long as I could and then it just did it automatically one night at 3am.
*People cant hear me when I answer the phone this is happening over and over.
*The phone goes to sleep no when I’m using headset which never used to happen and its a major annoyance. when i’m on phone and it sleeps there is no way to turn it back to use apps while talking until I end the call.
*when I unlock the phone it automatically takes me to the dialer which I cant stand
*battery life seems to be cut in half.
*turbo has never alerted me when I have a voicemail message – horrific!now what seems to be an alert is a prompt to trigger visual voicemail which affects my data allowance.
have to say this is the best worst phone I’ve ever owned. the quirks and problems I had early on led to months of frustrations and the constant dropping of the wifi network when i’m at my desk near it is preposterous.I dont get it. It hadn’t happened for months, then yesterday, two days after the forced install, it happened again…please address the problems Ive outlines Im sure there are many more, but thats all in just two days of operations. thanks!

Not sure if the system update did this or if this was on my phone all a long and I bumped something but, if I touch the lower right side of my screen I get flipped up corners showing multiple pages that are stacked. I don’t like this. Can it be removed.

    Droid Turbo lollipop issues #2
Now that I’ve had this for a longer period of time I’ve discovered more issues and annoyances:
*The phone thinks I’m on blue tooth half the time when I’m not and the phones volume is affected and the Speaker doesn’t work. If I disable blue tooth it works normally. The problem is if I’m not using my headset and am on a call and the phone is asleep THERE IS NO WAY I’ve found to get to the unlock screen and disable blue tooth without terminating the phone call.
*The phone should not sleep when using my blue tooth period…OR it should have an option to set that up like the old kitkat. I cant check an address, go to a website on phone or do anything if using headset and phone has gone to sleep during a call. Changing settings for sleep after 5 minutes is a security issue and drains battery.
*Im getting numerous complaints of calls not received and texts not going through since the upgrade.

Luckily still within the 14day trial period. Taking this $600 POS back. Work mandates using Good for Enterprise and Lync apps. Neither works properly along with most of the other issues already chronicled. Going to have to pay another $35 restocking fee on top of the $65 taxes and activation fees just to get back to my old GZone. Pitiful!

Among other problems, adding new entries to my phone directory is screwed up. The new entries do not show up alphabetically as they used to but are now placed randomly somewhere in the directory. I should not have to do a “search” for a listing each time I want to make a call.
I am also having problems with the blue tooth streamer for my hearing aids. Calls drop and randomly switch between the streamer and my phone. Verizon passed me off to Motorola, Motorola said it is the fault of the Google developers.
I have wonder why software updates are issued that introduce many annoying UI and functionality changes but offer no practical value for the consumer. Oh, I know, the software developers need a job.

I’m no techie and never expect to be…but I can’t even silence the phone???? I can’t take it to the movies without turning it OFF???? What the hell is wrong with the idiots who made this update???? Key board is harder to see in the bright light, than ever! Total, TOTAL idiots; yet so typical of our times, that this could happen! I’m afraid to go back to Verizon with this, because the waiting line will be out the door!!

I agree with you Bill. When I got my Droid Turbo in April, I was beyond impressed with the speed and functionality.
If I had gotten my phone with the current software version, I would have returned the phone immediately.
Verizon really dropped the ball by allowing this crap to be released and continues to fail by not expediting appropriate fixes or providing a means for those of us that wish to revert back to the previous version.
I haven’t seen one change that enhanced my user experience but have experienced many that make the use of the phone more frustrating. For example, why would one have to do three “button” presses to get to the keypad to dial a phone number? Isn’t the primary function of the device to make a phone call?
Verizon also needs to provide a better user forum with the opportunity to report and see reported complaints with proposed fixes and expected dates of repair. In my opinion, it is customer abuse to force us to either stand in line at a Verizon store or deal with less-than-adequate phone support when trying to identify and resolve performance issues related to a new software release.
Does Verizon even care about customer comments being made on forums like this one?

I have a Droid Turbo (Ballistic Nylon), and I am on Kit Kat. I have been getting notifications since Late July/Now (August) to get my Droid Turbo updated to Lollipop. I am a bit concerned if something will happen with my Droid Turbo when I get it updated to Lollipop. Like Slower Speeds, Wi-Fi issues, Camera, Battery, Call Quality. If you get the Lollipop on Droid Turbo, please let me know on feedback. Thanks. My version for Lollipop (didn’t install yet) says 23.11.39.en.US. Should I take it to Verizon or do it at home. I have Wi-Fi at home.
I am just concerned if something happens to my Droid Turbo phone when I get Lollipop. Did you have to reset the phone after installing Lollipop. Do I have to reinstall my apps. I backed up on the Verizon Cloud. If I have calendar events do I need to re-add the events.

My advice? Do not accept this upgrade until Motorola and Verizon fix it. I have had major issues, mostly with not being able to hear my business calls on blue tooth, or off, and battery power. Horrendous. I’m hoping for an update desperately or I am going after Verizon for a change to Samsung. My son has no issues. This droid has been the worst phone ivevever owned even before lolli. It worked great for two months aftwr 3 montbs of frustration and fixes, then came lollicrap.

I changed from my old Verizon droid (which kitkats update ladt year killed too by the way), to the new droid turbo. I struggled fro months with intermittent phone issues; not getting messages, hearing it ring and most frustrating of all…when using WiFi at home it regularly would not send emails and say searching for network when I was right next to my wifi. Nothing worked until one day these all magically went away. This was about April of 2015. Then, came the increasing prompts in may to change to lollipop. Eventually I was not able to operate the phone without the messages to download and one day I awoke to a new os. Since then its been just awful. Lately while using my nav. Other mobile apps will not function and early on while on calls I was unable to use the web to look up information addresses etc. Then the phone issues began…customers unable to hear me until I shut off blue tooth and restart then shut off and call back. My battery life no longer makes it through a day. It’s noon I’ve made 3 calls and I’m already at 55%.? Often my phone does not recognize my Bluetooth device(top of the line by the way), and unless I shut Bluetooth down won’t let me talk on the phone itself when I switch off the earpiece. IRS messed up. A factory reset is always the Verizon answer and sometimes it works sometimes not. It took me over a week to get my droid wher I wantbit for usability and I don’t want to go through that again without a guarantee that it will work.

My wife and I both got new turbos from Verizon. Fresh out of the box, both phones were TERRIBLE. Mine lagged, over heated, wouldn’t charge. Hers was worse. Screen would lock, open random apps, call random people, just generally unreliable. Verizon has been no help. Just wants to do resets over and over. Pretty much the worst phones we ever had. Will likely be returning them this weekend.

My problem is when I send emails to the trash folder, they self delete after a few minutes. Don’t know if it’s a setting or the 5.1 update . Started this a couple days ago. I have Droid Turbo.

I’m on my THIRD Turbo. All of them can’t connect reliably to my car. And when it does, the audio continues to come out of the phone instead of the speakers in the car. Unbelievable. Tried every fix. Verizon and Motorola have been little help. Factory resets, replacements, turning various functions off don’t seem to help either. What’s weird is sometimes the phone works fine in the car, but if I turn the car off, suddenly it’s connecting but audio goes back to the phone. I’m pretty sure, after three phones, that there’s something wrong with either bluetooth software or a physical component within the phone. Either way, I can’t continue like this. I have a year left but I think I’ll buy another phone at full price.

I have the ballistic nylon/kevlar version and was very happy with the high performance and quality of this device as I mainly use it for top end gaming which demands alot like Marvel champions, Mortal Kombat…well list goes and you get the idea. I actually still run games nicely especially taking into account where I live outside the city (far enuff that NO ONE will make broad band accessible… only slow @ss hughsnet using satellite). As far as the phone’s connection, if I walk inside my house it’s over and I drop calls, having only walked inside a few feet. I can deal with the spotty signal mess, but my issue is mainly the highly acclaimed so called “top notch 48 hour battery” that always makes the device feel like its going to literally combust into flames or melt internal components…well if it were actually holding a fraction of the charge as advertised then whatever, its not hurting my hands but has to be bad for the turbo itself. This phone pulls up websites randomly while I’m doing something totally different and the power button goes through phases where it won’t work at all. I was told this phone could easily handle any CPU/RAM hungry apps or games out there. This battery won’t let me go unplugged any longer than 45min to 1hr TOPS regardless of how easy I use this almighty piece of wasted technology… sure the process speed and display is nice, but the rest of the thing is less than stellar, my HTC incredible was my first smart phone and is still kicking fine…I don’t feel this sham of a product will make it near as long without total electronic meltdown… I also will never do business with the scamming money trap company “VERIZON WIRELESS” ever again. Not only have they broken trust and lied to me after 20+ yrs business and ridiculous shady contract imprisonment.. I recently had back surgery and they cut my services off anyway costing more fees and feelings of betrayal… This phone was broken before its release due to VERIZON’s tramp stamp on it making it exclusively their b!tc#!!!!.. I should have went with my instinct and went with a phone I can actually use where I please, saving me so many regrets. Considering all the money thrown away and headaches dealing with all the lack of customer support or compassion even satan would give a dog… I won’t be using Verizon for anything…pathetic phone with insane costs..

I have lost the ability to turbo charge since the update. I thought it was an issue with the charger itself and purchased a new identical one. Same issue. The phone charges at the normal, slow speed. I did some research on line and found that this issue was to do with the lollipop update…..so I contacted Motorola and they were of no help. They didn’t have a clue about what I was talking about and only wanted me to wipe the phone (which I am not willing to do until it is the absolute last resort), or REPLACE my phone (which isn’t even a year old yet) with a refurbished device, for a fee of $24.99. NO. I am not paying for something that is not of my doing! Can they not do an update to this update with a fix???? Ughhh. Totally frustrated.

Just an update… I did end up resetting my phone bacj to factory settings against my better judgment. Needless to say, this did NOT fix the problem (as I thought).

    Hi

Thanks for sharing this article with us. Nice post.

Speaker of the phone is considered to be one of the most vital parts of your phone, and if you are getting speaker problems in your mobile, then you will neither be able to hear everything on call or you will be able to listen to music or watch videos on your phone, but, it will only be good for text purpose. Therefore if you are going through mobile speaker issue then you would definitely want to resolve it in the first place before it gets any worst.

    Hi

Thanks for sharing this article with us. Nice Post.

A good number of Moto users have reported the random reboot / restart issue in their Moto, and the critical thing is that it can occur at any time. This is surely not an application issue, as this thing happens at any time even if the Moto is placed idle. But now, we can’t be certain, as sometimes even when the application is closed it keeps on running at the back end and it might be making such types of issues.
