DSLR, iPhone App Help Man Survive Haiti Quake

I’ve been tracking the news out of Haiti quite closely. There are many heartbreaking stories, but every once in a while there’s one that puts a smile on my face. The TODAY Show interviewed Dan Woolley, a filmmaker from Colorado that used his DSLR and iPhone to survive for over 65 hours until he was rescued.

…by using the focusing light on his camera and taking pictures, he was able to figure out where he was and where to go. And thanks to the iPhone first-aid app he’d downloaded, he knew how to fashion a bandage and tourniquet for his leg and to stop the bleeding from his head wound. The app also warned him not to fall asleep if he felt he was going into shock, so he set his cell phone’s alarm clock to go off every 20 minutes.

Mr. Woolley is a deeply religious man. I’m not sure how he managed to make his iPhone’s battery last for 65 hours, but according to him his prayers were answered.
