DSLR, iPhone App Help Man Survive Haiti Quake

Published

on

I’ve been tracking the news out of Haiti quite closely. There are many heartbreaking stories, but every once in a while there’s one that puts a smile on my face. The TODAY Show interviewed Dan Woolley, a filmmaker from Colorado that used his DSLR and iPhone to survive for over 65 hours until he was rescued.

From MSNBC.com:

…by using the focusing light on his camera and taking pictures, he was able to figure out where he was and where to go. And thanks to the iPhone first-aid app he’d downloaded, he knew how to fashion a bandage and tourniquet for his leg and to stop the bleeding from his head wound. The app also warned him not to fall asleep if he felt he was going into shock, so he set his cell phone’s alarm clock to go off every 20 minutes.

Mr. Woolley is a deeply religious man. I’m not sure how he managed to make his iPhone’s battery last for 65 hours, but according to him his prayers were answered.

There are still millions of people in need in Haiti. Please contribute to the Red Cross or your favorite aid organization and tell us about it. Tech bloggers and tech companies have teamed up to match SMS donations.

I believe Dan works with Compassion International, which is right up the street from my office. I have lots of friends that know Dan, and his story is an amazing one.

Compassion has a HUGE presence in Haiti.
