Ex-Engadgeteers Move to SB Nation

Published

on

You knew, you just knew something was up. Last week a wave of Engadget’s talent followed Joshua Topolsky and Nilay Patel out the door shortly after those top two members of the team left the popular gadget site. Turns out the exodus wasn’t so much of an exodus as it was a change in locale. Quite a few members of the editorial and tech teams at Engadget have now landed with SB Nation to form a new technology site. SB Nation is a federation of sports sites, so adding a technology site will be an interesting addition to the mix. Of course many think that covering the tech and gadget scene is a contact sport these days.

There’s some ins and outs to the parentage and incestuous relationships between the now departed Engadget folks an SB Nation chronicled in the New York Times, as well as a piece written about the move by Topolsky himself on his blog. Coming after the much ballyhooed and quite controversial purchase of the Huffington Post by AOL, Engadget’s owner, this has some interesting back story to it that maybe we’ll hear more about someday. Topolsky says we’ll be seeing the debut of what comes next sometime this fall.

In the meantime this is going to be very interesting to watch.

On the one SB Nation site I semi-regularly read, the threaded commenting system is very nice, nicer than any other blog I regularly read. It makes it very easy to find new unread comments in very long threads, multiple-thousand comments for an event isn’t unusual. Still not up to the best Usenet newsreaders of the past. I suspect the system is used by the other SB Nation sites.
