Facebook App for iPad Launching Next Week?

Published

on

A short time ago we had heard that Facebook was primed and ready to release its long awaited application for Apple’s tablet, the iPad. Well, it appears that the wait for anxious iPad owners might be over as Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has told Reuters that the company is going to be “launching something awesome” next week.

iPad 2

The application reportedly was in the final stages of testing a few weeks ago and was described like this by people who had seen it:

People who have seen the application said it has a slick design that has been tailored for the iPad and its touchscreen interface. Facebook developers and designers have also overhauled the Facebook Chat and Facebook Groups features for the application. And the app will go beyond the features available on the Facebook Web site by allowing users to shoot and upload photos and videos directly from the iPad’s built-in cameras.

Of course, it could be any number of things but the timing of it all makes the iPad app a pretty good horse to bet on. There are a couple of other possibilities though. It could very well be the launch of Facebook’s ‘Project Spartan’ which is an HTML5 App Store for iOS and there is also a chance that it could be Facebook’s photo-sharing software. And, there is always a chance that the announcement could be more than one of these.

Whatever the company is cooking up, it was developed at Facebook’s 40 person Seattle office which is the “only major engineering center outside of its Palo Alto, California headquarters.”

We’ll just have to wait until next week to find out what it is for sure.

How predictable. Google+ launches, mostly to positive comments and lots of eyeballs, and a couple of days later, you have the attention seeker Zuckerberg coming up with his “awesome” announcement. He has done it enough times now. Just for the sake of competition, I hope plus takes off vertically. Just like Bing keeps Google on its toes, Android keeps Apple on its toes(or now both keep each other on their toes), we need a facebook competitor. I hate how features are pushed onto me with opt-in, very hard to sit and control what goes to whom(doable, but its a pain), and something about facebook just feels slimy. In any case, competition is good for us.
