Firefox 3.6 gets pen-friendlier with TIP support

Published

on

Been procrastinating with upgrading Firefox to 3.6. Seems I should have gotten on it right away because it’s got support for the Tablet PC floating TIP baked right in.

Got the scoop on the forum from segalsegal. Been working pretty well with my testing tonight, including writing my last blog post. Previously, tapping on a text box would not bring up the floating TIP without an add-on, GeckoTIP for XP and Gesso for Vista. Couldn’t quite get either to work in Windows 7, but now I don’t have to sweat it.

For the most pen-friendly Firefox, I suggest bolstering it with two add-ons: FireGestures and Grab and Drag. FireGestures makes it easy to open and close tabs, throw links where you want them, toggle with fullscreen, and more with a few strokes across the screen. Grab and Drag lets you throw the screen around without bothering with scrollbars. Adds up to the best web browsing experience I know.

Something else to keep in mind is that you don’t need Grab and Drag if you have Windows 7 and a touchscreen supported by its APIs.

Touch panning lets you scroll with your finger without any additional addons. Of course, that doesn’t work if you want to scroll with the pen.

Or if you have non Windows Logo’ed hardware.

Which is why I said a touchscreen supported by the API. :p
