Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 Released

image If you like living on the edge of your browser, head over to Mozilla.com and grab the beta 1 release of Firefox 3.1. New features include:

  • Web standards improvements in the Gecko layout engine
  • Added support for CSS 2.1 and CSS 3 properties
  • A new tab-switching shortcut that shows previews of the tab you’re switching to
  • Improved control over the Smart Location Bar using special characters to restrict your search
  • Support for new web technologies such as the <video> and <audio> elements, the W3C Geolocation API, JavaScript query selectors, web worker threads, SVG transforms and offline applications.

      Hey, Rob!

      Thanks for the info on the new Beta,but I have to say, I really didn’t understand a word you said. I’m just a user, one who tries to keep up, but not what you would call a techie or a programmer. What does CSS do? How would I use the new features of the awesome bar? What are these new web technologies, and why do I want support for them?

      I know you just posted a quick bit on a piece of news, but I hope that somebody at GBM will check out the Beta and give us a full and layperson-friendly report.

      Hey, Sharon – those were features I grabbed straight from the firefox site. I just forgot to italicize them.

      The big thing for users: the big user thing is a nice ctrl-tab that lets you flip through your open tabs. they display a nice preview of each tab. All of the other features are more internals based and focused on developers writing apps for websites.
