Published

on

Fujitsu announced today that the Stylistic Q550 Slate PC is now shipping. Starting at just $729, the Fujitsu tablet is an affordable tablet designed for businesses that need to run full Windows apps.

The Stylistic Q550 slate is quite different from the Apple iPad, BlackBerry PlayBook and Android Honeycomb tablets. The first and most important difference is that it runs Windows 7. While Windows 7 is not designed specifically for slates, it is the only operating system that allows business users to run the same applications on their tablets as their laptops and dekstops. An anti-glare, high-brightness display is standard with the Stylistic Q550.

They Stylistic Q550 is designed with the clumsy businessman is mind and meets military specifications against dust, debris, temperature, vibration and drops.

The Stylistic Q550 starts at $729 with an Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, 4-hour battery and 30GB SSD. There’s also an $849 configuration available that comes with a 62GB SSD, enhanced security, and an extended battery that’s rated to last up to 8 hours and 10 minutes.

I would like to know who is getting one. I preorded mine over a month ago and just received word from Fujitsu that my new delivery date is July 11, 2011. You might want to verify that customers are actually receiving them now. If there are resellers that have them in stock right now, the readers would like to know that as well. Thanks.

Well, mine shows July 13 delivery. The “Now Shipping” press release is probably premature.

Mine shows shipped Yesterday..  (I had ordered the day after they announced Pre-Orders).
and the tracker shows it’s moved from China to  Memphis today… I’m just a few states away, so I’m hoping it gets to me by Mon. or Tues.

Hopefully Fujitsu isn’t lying about ship dates the way that HP did with their Slate 500.

This device looks great and I would love to buy one, but there’s no slot for the pen.  It may sound trivial but that’s a deal breaker for me.  A kick stand would be nice too.

I have my Q550 up and running.  Used it all day yesterday and this morning.  I have the T580  and had the P1630 so I am a Fujitsu small tablet fan.  My basic uses are Onenote, Email, Web, Word, Excel and Powerpoint.  I have used the Q550 with all.  It works great is an acceptable weight and feels like it has good build quality.  Would like more storage 62gb is ok but…  Less weight would be nice but not at the expense of build quality.  Not sure yet how this fits into my work flow vis a vis the T580 which has been my everything computer since I left the 1630.

Congratulations on the new machine Mike!  My usage is pretty much the same as yours.  I use a Lenovo X61.  I’d love to get a windows slate with touch and ink.  How do you find inking on the n-trig digitizer?

Handwriting recognition for word email etc and document markup is great. Touch is fine although not as ghood as an ipad or android tab

I also got the 64 gig ss drive model.  Onenote is the main draw for the  windows slate.  I have used a Toshiba m200 for 7 years and loved it.  Office 2010 offers the Livemesh sync with Skydrive which really negates any issues of the small ss drive.  The touch interphase is a little annoying sometimes.  A wacom digitizer would have been better – I like the eraser on the pen.  You can turn off the touch during heavy Onenote use, which I prefer.  The virtual keyboard is subpar and I have been unable to turn off the predictive type, even when I uncheck the “predictive type” box.  Hopefully this annoyance is fixed.  The hardware is good.  Beware that you will need a usb/vga converter if you need  to hook up with a projector that does not have an hdmi input.  There is only one usb so that limits other peripheral.

Overall  a very good slate for those who wish to use it to present and create content, not just watch netflix. I am hoping it will get a lot better when Window 8 is ready.
