Back up strategy is regular copies to an external hard drive. I think of all the things I would hate to lose it would be our addresses and some key photos

External hard drive. And only occasionally…!!

I use acronis home with an external hard drive, although I don’t do it as religiously as I should on my multiple computers… the external drive is running out of space so this would be welcome!

Use my 30GB iPod as my backup disk

I back up only immediately after something has gone wrong, computer-wise, and then only to an external hard drive that failed a few weeks ago, taking a folder I don’t even know the contents of anymore (but many, many pictures) with it. (I’m still in denial, really, since I still get the ‘we recognize something new’ sound.) Possibly I’ll go back up what little I keep on my computer now. *scurries*

I only image my system after a clean installation. What I do is after a fresh install, install other software that I find necessary, then image the drive. When events call for it, I’d re-image my main drive, install updates, and image it again.

The answer: The presentation I put together for my mother’s funeral. Lots of pictures that I don’t know that I could find any more (in physical form). Instead I have the 100MB presentation backed up in about a dozen places. :)

I back up my work using SugarSync, then once a month I copy the SugarSync Magic Briefcase folder to a Western Digital Passport portable hard drive just in case!

I back up my stuff using O&O’s Imaging software, onto a 500GB External Drive. This way all my documents, images, music, movies and mostly my projects are all safe! It recently saved my life as well when my machine died and I had a project submission in 24 hours!!!!

i currently don’t have a backup. Looked into some online stuff but it is far too slow for me. i’d like to get an external but the $$ factor doesn’t allow it right now. So that is why i don’t backup–even thought i know i should

I use a shoddy combination of an old school external hard drive, and a hello kitty USB flash drive (hey, it exudes the coolest neon pink blinkie). I would love to be able to have some “backup power” to preserve all our photos and silly videos that the kids made, as they are scattered on everyone’s computers like the laundry on the kids floor!

Admittedly, my backup plan right now is using a couple Seagate drives I won through Notebooks.com a couple months ago (thank you by the way). If I won this I’d probably give it away to the school I work at.

My TPC doesn’t have a good backup strategy as I don’t really have anything to use to backup to. This would be great to add to my portable gear.

I currently have a 500 gig Nas My Book drive from western digital. This hard drive is the bane of my existence. The firmware on it or something is just horrible so I can only transfer about 4 gigs tops before it tells me I do not have permission. I can view the files but cannot make any changes to them. Then it will randomly loose connection to my router. I really need something more reliable!!! I have all of my pictures on this hard drive atm and need something else to put them on. My most recent pictures are from my wedding about 2 weeks ago.

    Thanks GTBM!

It has happened. Just yesterday my hard drive failed on my laptop. I use this computer daily (OneNote) to record all meeting notes as well as my phone messages. Unfortuanately my last backup was in Jan. This means almost 2 months of information was lost. I need to have a more regemened backup process and tools. Sounds like this is just what I need to make “on the fly” backups (more often!).

Backup? I don’t bother anymore. I know that the government has a copy of everything I do. I’ll just ask them for it if my computer breaks.

Ditto – I have a Western Digital Passport external drive to backup laptop and Maxtor external HD to back up the desktop but I rarely take the time to back up files (will do that this weekend). I desparately need to back up my music files from itunes AND most importantly need to back up my dissertation files and articles.

I don’t really have a strategy. I copy important files to flash drives and an ancient laptop that I mostly use to mirror important files.

I don’t have a back up system or plan :(
I know I need one and should have one because last year I lost the modem in my PC and when they fixed it they lost all my files and I had 4 years of precious files lost~! Every time I think of buying one the funds always end up spent on something else that has broke around here such as the hot water heater and the dryer. I just never seem to have the extra money. Thanks for the opportunity to try and enter to win one since I just was laid off a week ago it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to afford one for a while.

Windows Live Mesh on my Documents folder shared between my Vista tablet PC, Mac desktop, and the web. Daily I run a batch file the copies it all to my Dropbox, so every file that’s important to me (between 1 and 2 GB) is in 2 places on my tablet, one place on my desktop, on MS’s servers, and at dropbox. I’m working on a thesis and I’m not risking anything!

I had an external LaCie HD, but it is not working correctly anymore, making a clanky noise likes its going to crash any minute now. So, all I have left is back up to a couple of 8GB SD cards and DVDs.
Its all manual and switching cards, so I have not been keeping up with it.

Well, the fact that I’m finally on track (somewhat) after the crash of this very computer on Friday (the 13th of all days)last week.

My friend bought me a quick external hard drive that I’m using now, but I’m afraid of my husbands computer doing it now too (very soon). So, please count me in. I’m doing back up’s to an external I just got, but the hubby needs one badly!

I use Synctoy to back up pics and documents to a hard drive. It’s a bit manual, I’d prefer something more automated.

Frankly, I don’t back up because I lack the hardware to do it right. :-)

This drive sounds like its very good.
I currently do not have a backup solution but have been doing some research. I hope to be able to backup soon but don’t have the money at this time.

Right now, we have a Seagate external hard drive that we use, but t is about a year and a half old, so I would love to back it up and have a portable solution for backing up my tabletPC.

Thanks for all these offers, by the way.

    03/20/2009 at 12:24 pm

I currently back up my desktop pc with a large external hard drive but am not yet using a backup strategy for my Notebook or Netbook. This would provide a good solution to back up those devices also.

I use macrium reflect to image my hdd to a network external drive. Wifi is slow and the computer the drive connects to has only USB 1.1, so I usually have to unplug it from the mess of wires behind my desk and physically connect it to my laptop. It would be nice to reserve that 500GB drive for holding things, and have a second smaller one for easy backup.

Still burn DVD mostly… but a few folders are synchronized using Live Mesh.

I am planning to buy some backup software after I recently had to deal with a corrupted OS. Genie Backup Manager looks good for that task but a 3.5 hard drive that is hard to carry around is not the ideal place to backup

  52. Anusha

    03/20/2009 at 2:28 pm

No backup strategy except burning onto DVDs which are not always reliable.

I’ve tried recently to do a ghost partition of my 2 main OS on one of my internal HDD. However, I don’t have any backup of all my media files (movies, pictures and songs).

I’ve been using Carbonite, but I’ve already lost my wedding video due to failure of Carbonite to back it up. Apparently they backed up videos when I opened the account, but silently stopped doing so. I didn’t find out till my hard drive crash and I restored from carbonite, and noticed videos missing. I’ll be changing solutions shortly. This would really help.

On my desktop, I’ve been using the backup utility that comes with Vista, onto an external USB HDD. I have not yet figured out a strategy for my new ASUS eee PC 1000HE.

I do not backup ANYTHING, the things I really need…like my resume or my class notes are saved in my flash drive but nothing else ever seemed backup worthy…I am not that important, therefore my stuff isn’t that important–> there is no reason to back my stuff up! I don’t even wanna win this…I don’t know why I’m entering, it’s a terrible habit!

My current backup solution is my Windows Home Server which backs up my computers when I need to and stores my large amount of media files.

This Clickfree Portable Backup Drive would allow me to transport my files anywhere I want to without relying on an internet connection.

I don’t back up because I currently don’t have an automated system for backing up my files. I do an occasional backup to multiple DVD’s of photos and images but otherwise it’s all up in the air. :(

  76. Michael

    03/22/2009 at 2:57 pm

I use an 8 gig usb stick for most of my backups. Beyond that I use dvd’s (duplicates of pictures). I would to get a full size portable backup again.

    Files daily on thumbdrive.

System on two external drives: one in fire safe and one pocketable. Also kept the original hardrive (complete OS, drivers, etc) when I swapped up to a larger one. This way I know I can get the thing turned on and functioning (assuming the harddrive is the thing that goes, of course).

Currently, I use time machine on my unibody MBP. The MBP is connected to an eSATA capable Rosewill enclosure. Its such a great treat to use time machine, since it automatically backs-up the system and the backups are accurate to the second! In fact, I had recently gotten my MBP exchanged due to a defect and when I got the new system, all I had to do was connect my time machine HD, and the Mac OS automatically transferred all my data!

I am still looking for a reliable back up solution for my windows system. If there is a time machine equivalent for windows, that would be amazing!

I have an external backup that I backup to every 2 weeks or so. It’s not really a portable setup however, which would be nice.
