8 Common Note 4 Lollipop Problems & How to Fix Them

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.0 Lollipop update delivers a number of big changes including Google’s new Material Design. The update’s also brought some features that aren’t listed on the change log: Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop problems. With Android 5.0 problems mounting, we want to take a look at some potential fixes for these issues.

In the last month of 2014, Samsung started rolling out the Galaxy S5 Lollipop update. In the weeks since, Samsung’s started rolling out several other Galaxy Lollipop updates including the Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update, the device’s first major software upgrade.

The Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update, like the Galaxy S5 Lollipop update, brings a ton of big time features to the flagship Galaxy Note. And while the Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade is working out fine for some users, we’ve also started to hear about Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop problems. And because the update isn’t widespread, complaints about Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop problems have only just begun.

We’ve spoken to some Galaxy Note 4 owners who are running into Android 5.0 Lollipop problems after moving to Samsung’s latest update. We’ve pointed out a number of these Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop issues already though the list continues to grow as more and more Galaxy Note 4 users receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

We’re still not sure when Samsung or carriers like Sprint will roll out their first Android 5.0 Lollipop bug fix update so we want to do our part and help try and solve some of these issues ahead these releases.

Here, we take a look at some of the Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop problems that have popped up for users in recent weeks and offer some possible fixes for these issues. These will help Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop users and they should prove beneficial to AT&T, U.S. Cellular, Verizon, and T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 users as well.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop Installation Problems

Now that the Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update is rolling out in the United States, we’re starting to get some feedback from U.S. Galaxy Note 4 users. One of the problems that they’ve apparently run into are some installation problems that prevent the download and installation process from completing. Fortunately, there are some fixes that should help move things along.

Samsung outlines a number of steps to take if the download process is unable to complete. Here are the steps that Samsung recommends if Android 5.0 Lollipop doesn’t install properly the first time around.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 users that have enough storage available, will want to ensure that the device is charged up to at least 50% before the download and installation process begins. If that still doesn’t work, try downloading and installing over a fast Wi-Fi connection. If there are still issues after that, let the phone die, recharge to 100% and try installing again.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop Battery Life Problems

Battery life problems are among the most common smartphone problems. That’s why it hasn’t been surprising to see Galaxy Note 4 users complain about abnormal battery drain after its first major Android update. These complaints don’t come as too much of a surprise given how poorly the Lollipop update is performing on some Galaxy S5 models.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Lollipop battery life problems are among the biggest problems effecting Galaxy S5 users and it looks like these same issues are affecting the Galaxy Note 4’s firmware. While there is no guaranteed fix, there are certainly a few things to try before taking the phone into a store.

In our experience, third-party apps are the cause of most post-release Android battery life problems. Apps are the first place we would look if the Galaxy Note 4 starts exhibiting bad battery life after the move up to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Best Galaxy Note 4 Apps - 1

First, we recommend booting into Safe Mode. Booting the Galaxy Note 4 into Safe Mode will disable third-party applications which will allow users to identify potential culprits. Isolating applications will take a lot of time (you’ll need to do some uninstalling) but it’s worth a shot if the Galaxy Note 4’s battery isn’t holding up after Lollipop.

Here’s how to boot the Galaxy Note 4 into Safe Mode:

  1. Power down the device. Then, press & hold the Power button and volume down key.
  2. Once it boots up, you can let go of the power button but keep the volume key held down.
  3. When you have successfully entered into Safe Mode, you will notice the text ‘Safe Mode’ at the bottom left corner of the screen.

We recommend keeping the Galaxy Note 4’s applications updated with the latest bug fixes and enhancements. Make sure to gather feedback from fellow users before doing so.

It’s also worth restarting the Galaxy Note 4 to see if that gets rid of the problem. This quick reboot will clear the cache and kill off services that might be eating away at the battery.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 users might also try disabling NFC and Bluetooth. We also suggest getting rid of live wallpapers. Live wallpapers have the potential to chew through battery in the background.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop Wi-Fi Problems

Complaints about Wi-Fi connectivity after a major Android update are common and while we haven’t seen widespread complaints about Galaxy Note 4 Wi-Fi issues, there’s a very good chance some users will run into problems down the road. Typically, problems range from slow connections to lost connectivity when the device is in a strong signal area.

The first thing to do is reboot the Galaxy Note 4. Users will also want to try rebooting the local router if that hasn’t been done in awhile. We recommend unplugging the router for a good 30 seconds and then plugging it back in. Users can do the same for your modem as well. If that doesn’t work, Galaxy Note 4 owners experiencing Wi-Fi problems might also consider updating the routers firmware. If those simple fixes do not work, it’s now time to head into the device’s settings.

First, try forcing the device to forget the Wi-Fi network that’s posing problems. Head to the desired connection in Settings and select the Forget Network option. Once that’s done, users will then need to reconnect to the Wi-Fi network with the password so make sure that it’s readily available.

It’s also worth going into Power Saving Mode to see if Wi-Fi restrictions are in place. To access Power Saving Mode, head into Settings and then into the Power Saving Mode option. This is a known fix for Wi-Fi issues.

If none of those fixes dislodge the Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop Wi-Fi problems, we recommend updating applications. Users can also try booting into safe mode to see if apps are really the issue. If apps aren’t causing the problem then it’s probably worth trying another router to see if it’s a hardware problem.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop Bluetooth Problems

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 users that encounter Bluetooth problems should try shifting Bluetooth on and off. To do this, head into Settings and then Bluetooth and toggle the service off and then back on again after a few moments. If that doesn’t fix the problem, it’s time to forget Bluetooth connections. Head into Bluetooth and forget the problem device or devices. Then, reconnect.

Users trying to connect to a car, will need to consult the car’s manual to reset the car’s Bluetooth.The process is going to be different for each make and model, that’s why we recommend consulting the car’s manual. Once that connection has been reset and the connection’s been forgotten on the Galaxy Note 4, try reconnecting to see if it works.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop Overheating Problems

Some Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop users say that the device has started running extremely hot after the arrival of Android 5.0 Lollipop. This can happen when playing an intense game for a few hours straight but many users are saying that it’s happening without much provocation. Thankfully, there are a few fixes to try if the Galaxy Note 4 starts getting hot for no reason.

First, try restarting the Galaxy Note 4. Leave it off for a minute or so and then boot it back up. If that doesn’t work, power it down again and this time, remove the battery and microSD card from the microSD card slot if there is one. Pop the battery back in without the microSD card in and see if that works. This has worked for us in the past.

If none of that works, we suggest booting into Safe Mode to see if it’s an app that’s causing problems. A rogue app could be overworking itself so it’s important to check to see if that’s what might be occurring.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop Performance Problems

We’ve also been hearing about drops in performance after the arrival of Android 5.0 Lollipop. This is common after a major Android update and over the years we’ve picked up on a few potential fixes that seem to work.

Galaxy Note 4 users experiencing abnormal lag or sluggishness will be happy to know that there are an array of fixes to try and help stabilize the performance of Android. The first potential fix that we recommend is a process that will clear the Galaxy Note 4’s cache partition. To clear the cache partition on the device, follow these steps:

  • Turn the Galaxy Note 4 off.
  • Press and hold Home, Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the device vibrates.
  • When the Samsung logo appears, release them.
  • Tap Volume Down repeatedly until you Wipe Cache Partition. Select it with the power button. Select Yes.
  • Wait for the process to complete. It could take awhile.
  • Reboot your Galaxy Note 4.

We also recommend halting the use of live wallpapers, they can negatively impact performance. Users can also try toggling NFC off when it’s not in use because this often provides useful gains in performance.

Note 4 users can also try turning off animations if performance really starts taking a tumble. To do this, hold down on a blank space on the screen, go to the Home Screen Settings then Transition effect and select None. Users can also try disabling some applications through Application Manager in device settings.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop App Problems

Samsung notes that app issues are extremely common after big releases like Lollipop. Samsung Galaxy Note 4 users experiencing issues with applications can try a few things to jumpstart performance. First, try updating the problem app. There’s a good chance that the developer’s rolled out a bug fix so users be wise to give that a shot first.

We also recommend reinstalling the application. We’ve seen success with this method several times in the past and it could resolve issues with app performance after Lollipop. If the problems continue, reach out to the developer and alert them to the problem. This will help them identify the problem and potentially fix it in a later update. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Touch More options
  2. Touch My apps > All
  3. Touch the application with the issues
  4. Scroll down to Developer
  5. Touch Send email to report the issue with the application developers

How to Fix Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop Problems If Nothing Else Works

If nothing here works, it’s probably time to revert back to Android 4.4 KitKat. Or if that doesn’t sound appealing, factory reset the device.

Those looking to factory reset should note that it’s a time consuming process and Note 4 users will need to ensure that key files are backed up before starting. This process erases the entire phone and brings it back to the state that it was in when it first came out of the box.

To do this, go into SettingsUser & Backup, and select Backup and Reset. From there, select Factory Data Reset. From there, select Reset Device and then Delete All.

If for whatever reason that doesn’t work, users can also factory reset using the hardware keys on the phone. Here’s how to do that. It’s a far more difficult process. We recommend the above route if possible.

  • First, you’ll need to turn the Galaxy Note 4 off.
  • Once its off, press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power buttons together until you see an Android appear on the screen.
  • Once you see this, use the Volume down key to highlight the Wipe Data/Factory Reset option. Use the Power button to select it.
  • Use the Volume down key to select Yes – delete all user data and then use the Power button again to select it.
  • When you see the Reboot System Now option, you’ll know you’re on track. Use the Power button to select that option.
  • This will erase everything on the Galaxy Note 4 bringing it back to the state it was in when you first bought it. It also might fix the problems you’re having.

Sometimes, unorthodox fixes will work where common fixes fail. We also recommend taking a look at Android Central’s forums, one of our favorite Android-centric forums. For those still unable to fix Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop problems, we suggest getting in touch with the device’s service provider. If there isn’t one, get in contact with Samsung itself.

Your abnormal concern with getting your articles included in search engines by including the name of the devices you are writting about 30 or more times in the article is so annoying that most people just stop reading after the first few paragraphs.

    To make matters worse 95% of your articles are usually worthless in that they contain no new or relevant information.

        I appreciate your help and don’t listen to negative comments, for those of us who need step by step instructions, your articles are very helpful. I personally don’t like how the new update changed my font and ability to increase the font size of the application name beneath the icons and throughout the overall menus. I need a larger font and can’t figure out how to do that now. I had it all looking perfect before. Ugh!!

    You forgot a huge problem. The horribly UGLY NON CHANGEABLE DISPLAY COLORS you get forced to endure. It hurts my eyes looking at it. They are great if you’re an 11 year old girl and 80s retro neon pastel is your thing. At least give the user the option to change it. I thought android was supposed to be all about personalization.

      Android is about personalization, 100%. It’s Samsung’s TouchWiz that gets in the way here.

      This is worked around by installing a third-party launcher; I use Nova myself.

    Ever since the lollipop update all my music on the sd card is unreadable on my note 4. The card works on other devices. I have formatted another card and added new music. When i try to play it says that the files are unrecognizable. I’ve been in contact with samsung with sprint even got a replacement phone. Please any help would be appreciated

    Youre instructions clearing the cache are wrong, it’s the volume up button you’re supposed to hold, not the down one. Volume down does something different that I will apparently discover the results of sometime in the future.

      Ah, I wish I’d seen this before posting myself. Thanks! And for those who try this and see your phone telling you it’s updating the system, don’t panic. You’ll soon get a menu page that allows you to select different actions or to simply power down or reboot, thereby abandoning the process. It does look frightening at first, though.

    When I do this, the Samsung logo never appears. I just get a warning of the dangers of downloading a custom OS with an option to continue or to cancel the download of a custom OS. My phone is totally standard, no OS or ROM customization. It’s not even rooted. Any idea what’s going wrong?

    Another way to get into safe mode is to, with the phone powered on, hold the power button to bring up the power menu. Then long press the “Power off” button and when the safe mode menu pops up, press “Restart” to reboot into safe mode.

    Hi there, i had the same issue for 2 days after the lollipop update. i did something rather cunning that worked for me and restored my note 4 experience back to how i loved it, before the update. I realised that mainly google play services was the culprit here. Maybe the new environment the app found itself in after the update caused it. but i merely think after this quick heal everyone should leave their device alone and active for at least half a day or a full day and everything will be okay. (please remember to put your device on airplane mode when idling device.
    1. Go to google services setting (the little gray gear icon with a white G in the middle)
    2. find connected apps
    3. at the top you should find your email address, and below “All apps and devices”. You’d not that you can toggle that drop down menu to show “Apps with Google+ Sign in” and “Google fit apps & devices” also showing.
    4. for users like me who has multiple gmail address on your device you should be able to toggle between you address from the drop down menu provided.
    5. for the option you point 3, look in list and you should find apps that you probably connected before and have stopped using. but google services has kept the connection and this is increasing your processor and battery activity in the wake of an OS upgrade.
    6. You need to look at all the apps critically and disconnect all connections that are not necessary or you could simple kill all apps and reconnect them when you use them again on your pc or on the device and google apps will reconnect them.
    7. Killing them is also a good way to be sure you are leaving only the relevant apps connected.

    after this activity just restart the device and leave it to rest on charge and you’d notice the fast charging working like a charm again.

    anyways, this worked for me. Try it yourselves and lets see. I’d appreciate anyone who has this working for them to let me know.

    another thing though, there is an app collection called apus battery boost, booster+ and apus power+. this collection properly utilised works wonders on android devices. makes my device to need a charge after a minimum of 12 hours usage. they’ve done some really nifty updates that has made it even better. check it out.

    Thanks for the article. Looking for a Wi-Fi issue under the “power savings” category, was not where I would’ve begun looking. But it helped.

    Hi….I have note 4 nd I update 5.0.1 after installation phone get stuck nd get switch off and switch on 10 to 15 times last show the display automatically similarly same thing happened again nd again
