Galaxy Note 5 Fast Wireless Charging: What to Know

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 has been available for nearly 8 months, and millions of users love all it has to offer. With a big 5.7-inch display and improved features over last years model, not to mention a features called Fast Wireless Charging. Here we’ll be going over everything owners need to know about it.

The new Galaxy S7 is here with the same technology, and its something all users should consider. Wireless charging is nothing new, but the fast wireless charging technology is much better, and here are some more details.

Read: 10 Exciting Galaxy Note 5 Accessories

The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge from April of 2015 along with the new Galaxy Note 5 and Edge Plus have a premium all glass and aluminum design, but that means no replaceable battery like earlier Galaxy and Note devices. This upset many buyers, but Samsung delivered a compromise by adding wireless charging to both phones. Read on for more details about how it works, and Fast Wireless Charging on the Note 5.

Fast-charger

Wireless charging is nothing new, however there are two different types of wireless charging. If you buy the wrong charging pad or your new car doesn’t support the right type, it won’t work with your wireless-enabled device, like the Nexus 6. This is done via a few different charging types. Like Ford vs Chevy, there’s Qi Wireless Charging, and the PMA Wireless Charging Standard. With the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, Note 5, S6 Edge and even the new Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Samsung implemented both versions.

Meaning either wireless charging type works with your phone. Taking the guesswork out of this convenient option and any wireless charging device will charge a users new phone. Many Starbuck locations have PMA chargers, which will charge these phones while users sip their sugary drink.

How it Works

Essentially users buy a pad and instead of plugging in a smartphone or tablet to charge it, all you need to do is drop it on the charging pad and it will automatically start charging. In a sense this is wireless, as you can grab it and go and not worry about wires, but the pad is plugged in via a typical micro-USB cable.

Read: 5 Quick Chargers for the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus

Drop it on the wireless charging pad and it recharges, pick it up and go and you have a full battery. However, wireless charging is slow and takes nearly 3-4 hours to fully charge a device. Wireless charging pads have 10w output. A regular wired charger (like the charger included in the box) will completely charge your device to 100% in less than 90 minutes. Basically almost twice as fast. So while wireless charging is nice, it’s not ideal because it takes too long.

Samsung Fast Wireless Charging

With the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus the company introduced fast wireless charging. An option that will be coming to more charging pads and more devices in the near future, like the S7 and the upcoming Galaxy Note 6. This promises to increase the speed by 1.4x and now Qi Wireless charging pads will output 15w of charging power. This should make wireless charging an actual feature owners will want, not just something that’s convenient that hardly anyone will use.

Now users won’t have to choose between charging their smartphone quick with the wired charging that came in the box, or the easy wireless charging that takes forever. Fast Wireless charging promises to recharge the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge 50 minutes faster than typical wireless charging. Here’s our quick hands-on video showing the Note 5 and the Fast Wireless Charger in action, along with the neat animation and on-screen effect Samsung’s added.

As you can see above it’s extremely easy. All you do is walk up and drop your Note 5 on the charger and that’s it. Fast Wireless charging kicks on and starts wirelessly charging your smartphone. Buyers will still get a faster charge using the included wall charger, but this is a nice addition that will make wireless charging actually useful, instead of just a convenience.

Samsung released a few Fast Wireless Charging Pads, and the best one retails for $69.99. This will charge any Qi capable device, and is backwards compatible with regular wireless charging phones like the Galaxy S6, Nexus 6, and many other devices available today with wireless charging.

This isn’t an extreme leap or revolutionary new feature by any means, but it’s one more way that Samsung is pushing the bar with the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. I’ll still be using a wired charger to power up my phone, but being able to have a fast wireless charger on my nightstand by the bed is certainly more appealing now. Samsung has continued to add this to each new phone, and it will likely appear on the new Galaxy Note 6 later in 2016 as well.

The fast wireless charger for Note 5 is amazing but there is no official announcement related to its date of release. The price is bit expansive though but will definitely try at once. Just afraid if at such a fast charging rate, device might be getting busted.

The best wireless charger out there at the moment is Samsung Fast Charge Qi Wireless Charging Pad! I have been using it for several months and I’m very happy with it https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Fast-Charge-Wireless-Charging/dp/B012AWBN9C/?t%61g=d%61nerds-20

This is my first fast charger and I don’t think it’s all that fast. I just got the Note 5 a few days ago and needed to charge my battery. I set my phone on the fast charger last night at 9:10p, when I went to bed at 11p it was still charging, I woke up at about 2a and noticed the light was blinking blue, I picked up the phone and looked at it and it was only at 88%, that was after like 5hrs! I awoke again a few hours later and now the charger was blinking a really fast blue, phone only at 95%. Picked it up and put it back down and the flashing stopped, dropped back off to sleep until my alarm went off at 6a and the charger was finally green. I don’t call that all that fast and I don’t really know what all the flashing was about as there are no details in box when you get it.

Galaxy S6 & Galaxy Note Wireless Charging: The Solution
In the end I found a solution on a forum somewhere (sorry – can’t find it now!), the solution is to prevent your phone from going completely ‘to sleep’ while charging by enabling the Daydream feature specifically when charging, to do this:

      Go To ‘Settings’
      Go to ‘Display’
      Go to ‘Daydream’
Ensure the Daydream option is turned on
Select your preferred Daydream visual (I opted for the ‘Colours’ screensaver)
Select ‘More’ in the top right corner of the Daydream screen
      Select ‘Select when to daydream’
Ensure either ‘While Charging’ or ‘Both’ is selected

This was a perfect tip. I thought that something was wrong with my wireless charger because I would put my phone on and and it would charge for 10 seconds and stop. Well, setting my phone to daydream, works perfectly. Not as fast, but it works and I will take that.
        Thanks so much.

I got my Note 5 a couple of days ago and I believe there is a problem with the fast charger. Similar to Cheryl’s comment the charging was not fast. Mine was slowly going up and then I left it over night and it actually had discharged down to 5%. My wife also got a Note 5 so I used her charger and it worked. I brought my charger back for a replacement and the first time it charged to 100% no problem. Next morning both my wife’s Note 5 and mine were at 50% or less so I guess it wasn’t a random problem. Since it is new I haven’t seen other comments on it.

I’m glad that the wireless charging pad was included for free with my Galaxy Note 5 because I will say…..I’m glad I didn’t pay for it. The damn thing keeps disconnecting on me. It’s honestly a hit or a miss when it comes to charging with the pad. It’s like as if the charging pad is bi-polar.

I bought my Note 5 a week ago with the recommended wireless round charger. So far, 1 to 1..I have left it at roughly 220 on the pad, gone to bed to find it dead when I woke up.I tried turning the phone off. The assumption here is..it would charge faster without the extra drain of it being on..to find no charge at all.Durring the day i lay it down, on, and see the contact Circle animation. 5 hours later only 15 % xharge added. OFF.. no charge at all.I am dissappounted. It is unreliable..to the point of useless. The SamSung fast Charge mobile battery charger..however is awesomely fast..and reliable.what a dissappointment to spend so much.mfor nothing at all.Care to school me on the Why..this isnt working ?

From a post on android central

Samsung charger EPPG920IBUGUS is not the correct charger for Note 5. It will not charge my phone above 52%. According to Samsung they have a new charger for Note 5 “coming soon” model EP-PN920TBEGUS. Here is the new webpage for this product: samsung[dot]com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EP-PN920TBEGUS. Samsung has refused to send me the new charger in return for the incorrect one.

I was told by the Samsung rep today that in order for the charger that they gave for free w the Note 5 orders to work, the phone must have the ‘Daydream’ setting turned on. She said they’ve found that the phone goes into took deep a sleep to recover that it’s on a charger. To turn ‘Daydream’ on, go to settings, type in Daydream in the search and then select it and turn the switch on. I’m going to try it out tonight and will report my findings tomm as to whether it helps this wireless charger or not.
I am also going to contact her to see if she will switch out the charger for the correct one once it’s available if this does not work.

When you are on the daydream screen there is the option of “More” in the upper right corner which takes you options on when to daydream. Docked or on Charger. Since I’m not docked, to be safe I picked the option “Both”

      • Paul Primmer

        09/07/2015 at 7:20 am

Tried this on 2 Note 5s and neither one got fully charged so the daydream workaround doesn’t work for me.

          09/07/2015 at 9:25 am

Yeah, I tried it last night, didn’t work. I’m just going to keep in touch w the Samsung rep that I’ve been talking to and hopefully she’ll be willing to swap out the wireless chgr they gave w the phone purchase w the correct one once it comes out.

I got a reply from Best Buy that the chargers they gave me were the correct ones and I should replace them. Since I had already replaced one of them without success, I didn’t think this would work. But I replaced mine and my wife’s yesterday. Mine has a case and hers does not. Over night charging yielded mine at 52% and hers at 32%. So that is 5 chargers that all do not work. Conclusion: the Samsung charger is crap which is why they are giving them away. I guess I will buy the Tylt vu charger which is $40 on Amazon. The “new charger” from Samsung not released will sell for $70 but why buy from a company that makes crap.

My final post on the charger. After 5 bad Samsung chargers I bought a Pleson charger on Amazon for $13.00 and it works great. There are other models to pick from. On Android Central web site people are reporting that this is a problem with the black Samsung chargers (the white one works). Seems like Samsung has a quality control issue.

New Note 5 not even a week old and my fast charger will not work. The reboot function with pressing the power key and down volume button doesn’t seem toverwhelming worknow great. I bought to Note 5s. The one I have charges fine with the Galaxy charger, an old gas station charger, and one at work. My wife’s phone is not not charging. The Galaxy charger is not working, and I unplugged my phone to plug hers in. My phone was charging fine, but hers has not charged.

People report that the Samsung wireless charging pad switches to a flashing BLUE light and the phone says, “Charging Paused” ….during charging sometimes. I am having the same problem with a new Note 5 and Samsung wireless charger base. Because…. (1) It only happens *sometimes*… but when it happens, it happens consistently. (2) People report that sometimes notifications cause it to happen, and clearing those notifications fixes it. (3) Powering the phone off fixes it. (4) A Sony model wireless charger reportedly works fine. ….. I CONCLUDE that the problem is causes by SOFTWARE. It has to be something software related… and something in the communication between the phone and the charger base. Some bug in the sleep mode, or notification interruption, or sleep screen, or apps that force the phone to not sleep, or something like that. It has to be… THE GOOD NEWS is that this should be relatively easy for Samsung to research and fix it… without changing any hardware.

Have the note 5 and wireless charger, and must say it works very well. No issues as of yet, granted it has only been a few days, The wireless charger is very fast at doing its job, and at the end of the day you still have a fast charger and cable, if you decide you don’t like the charge pad.

Eventually Samsung brought it’s advance feature with new Galaxy note 5. Most people thought that whatever the Samsung promise and show is true but its not my friend. Some time they lie and deceive us. So it make me think before dwelling into the products. You always know that Samsung phones always have been sluggish in services after some time and so are batteries, even new one get hang some time. So always look for review before cashing on products.

Lesson on ohms law here people.. If you are unaware,If you are trying to charge Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge/ S6 Edge Plus… you have to have the “Fast” $70 wireless Samsung charger, NOT the standard $50 Samsung wireless charger. The standard Wireless , and the wall charger for previous models charged phones at 10 watts(5 volts x 2 Amps). Standard USB voltage is 5 volts, however older chargers, and USB ports on a computer only put out 5 volts at 0.5 amps. Volts x Amps=Watts So plugging your older Samsung phone(i.e. Galaxy S4) into your computer would yield only 2.5 charging watts (5 volts x 0.5 Amps=2.5 Watts)… Which is 1/4 of the 10 watts it is meant to charge at. The newer Phones( Galaxy Note 5, Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge/ S6 Edge Plus…) Charge at 15 Watts( 9 volts x 1.67 Amps(read the fine print on the side of the charger that came with the phone) Using a charger with much lower charging watts would possibly work, but would charge very very slowly, if the charge rate(watts) is lower than the discharge rate of the phone(the powering that is being used by the phone), than the battery will continue to discharge. If it is the only charging source available consider powering off the phone to avoid this issue. At only 2.5 watts like your computer puts out, It would only charge a Note 5 at 1/6 of the charging watts. The cheaper Samsung charger has a 10 watt wall adapter, so if 100% of that power got to your newer phone, you are still only charging it at 2/3 of the charging capability..Moral to the story…..

    USE THE CORRECT CHARGER!

      04/16/2016 at 11:34 am

There is SOMETHING wireless about it. The wireless part is between the phone and the charger; not between the charger and the wall. Even Samsung website says you still have to plug the pad into the wall. Maybe read a little closer before spending cash money next time.

When is Samsung going to fix this issue? I am on my third charger all fast charger units, the most recent being a stand up model. It still pauses after only a few seconds. I’ve tried numerous settings, different cords, different chargers. I have tried a Pleason $18 charger and it works at times. I’m certain this is a software issue. Please fix this Samsung. These phones are expensive. We need options…..please.

I dunno. I have 4 Choetech wireless chargers through Amazon. Both of my Note 5s charge fine through Otterbox Defender cases. They stay at 100% after charging even over night sitting on the charger and/or at the office. Couldn’t be happier. Just lucky I guess.

I’ve had my note 5 since March ’16.. within weeks of purchase the charging port was glitching like crazy.. constantly binking & boinking like it does when you initially plug in the charger.. i was able to send it into samsung under the manufacturers warranty for repair.. now less than 8 months since they repaired the port it is again glitching when i plug in the fast charging cable.. ive decided to just use a charging pad & forgo the drama of a glitchy charging port.. i would suggest to anyone using a galaxy note 5 with a fast charging cable to look into buying ba charging pad to decrease the amount of usage (wear & tear) on the charging port & risking it becoming permanently damaged.. good luck
