Should I Buy the Galaxy S3 or the iPhone 5?

Published

on

“Should I Buy the Galaxy S3 or the iPhone 5?” is one of the most asked questions in our inboxes. One has to imagine workers at Verizon, Sprint and AT&T stores constantly have to answer the same question. The iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S3 are two of the most popular smartphones available, and shoppers can choose either without switching carriers.

A year ago it was easier to tell many shoppers to pick the iPhone over the latest Samsung Galaxy S smartphone. But with the new Galaxy S3 shoppers face a much tougher decision, one that comes with a two-year commitment.

If you already own an iPhone or an Android device, it’s important to consider the cost of switching to the iPhone or Android. Apps and accessories are not normally compatible with each system, so many current smartphone owners may want to just stick with the type of phone they already own. But if you are trying to choose between the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 on any U.S. carrier, here’s what you need to know about each device.

Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 5 Display

The Samsung Galaxy S3 features a 4.8-inch display, compared to the iPhone 5’s 4-inch display. Despite the larger display, the Galaxy S3 itself is not significantly larger than the iPhone 5.

The screen size and quality are two of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a smartphone because all the interaction takes place here.

iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3 Display

The Galaxy S3 boasts a larger screen, but both phones deliver a great viewing experience.

The larger display on the Galaxy S3 is better suited for watching movies and mobile gaming, providing a more immersive experience than the iPhone 5.

The Galaxy S3 will also soon be able to use a multi-window mode that places two apps on the screen at once, so it’s possible to watch a video and check email at the same time without switching between apps. This is in the form of a Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean update that does not have a U.S. release date yet.

The Galaxy S3’s 1280 x 720 display is one of the best available on a smartphone. We called it “gorgeous” in our Galaxy S3 review, calling out the, “vivid and bright” display. The video below compares it to several screens, though not to the iPhone 5, as it was not released at the time of filming.

The iPhone 5’s 4-inch display is an upgrade from the iPhone 4S, and includes a higher 1136 x 640 resolution. The new 16 x 9 aspect ratio does help with watching videos, but it’s still noticeably smaller than the Galaxy S3’s display.

The iPhone 5’s display is rated at 326 ppi, slightly higher than the Galaxy S3’s 306 ppi rating. The higher the ppi (pixels per inch), the better text and photos look on a phone.

Display quality is too close to pick a winner, but users that plan to watch a lot of video content and want a larger canvas to compose and view photos should lean towards the Galaxy S3.

Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 5 Design

Apple designed the iPhone 5 with anodized aluminum and glass, focusing on beveled edges and straight edges while Samsung opted for a plastic design with curves and flowing lines.

Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5

Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 side-shot showing thickness.

The iPhone 5 is a definitive upgrade from the iPhone 4S, shrinking to 7.6mm thick and replacing a glass back with metal to improve durability. The iPhone 5 doesn’t offer a user replaceable battery or a additional storage because of the unibody design. This design choice limits expandability, but delivers a solid phone that feels more high-end than the Galaxy S3.

Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5

The Galaxy S3 back comes off to offer access to the battery and MicroSD card.

The Galaxy S3 features a Gorilla Glass covered display for added strength. The sides and back of the Galaxy S3 are made of plastic, not metal like the iPhone 5. The Galaxy S3 is nice to hold, but it’s not as nice as the iPhone 5 in this area.

The Galaxy S3 is not a unibody smartphone, which means users can take the plastic back off to access the battery and a Micro SD card slot. Some shoppers will appreciate the ability to carry a spare battery or a larger battery and to expand the storage with an affordable Micro SD card later.

iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3

The iPhone 5 features a single button, to the Galaxy S3’s three.

The iPhone 5 features a home button to control multiple features with a tap, hold or double press. The Galaxy S3 includes a physical home button as well as two capacitive buttons to control the Android operating system.  Both phones include physical volume and power buttons, and the iPhone 5 features a mute switch on the left side.

iphone 5 vs Galaxy S3 bottom

The Galaxy S3’s MicroUSB port is more common than the iPhone 5’s lightning port.

The iPhone 5’s headphone jack is on the bottom next to the Lightning adapter. The new Lightning adapter means it is difficult to find a charger at a friend’s house or in an airport, but this should improve shortly. The Galaxy S3’s headphone jack is at the top, and a Micro USB port sits at the bottom for charging and syncing. This common connector is found almost anywhere.

The video below shows the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 in a drop test to illustrate the phone’s ability to survive drops from multiple heights.

The winner here comes down to personal preference, so head to a local store and hold each phone, but keep in mind the inability to swap batteries and add extra memory to the iPhone.

Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 5 Features

The iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 are well matched on features, but each phone handles some tasks better than others. The Galaxy S3 offers more software control of the camera and allows users to customize Android with new launchers, widgets and themes. The iPhone 5 is in the lead when it comes to Siri and camera quality.

Cameras

The Galaxy S3 offers many more shooting modes than the iPhone 5, including Burst Shot and Best Photo, which can take multiple photos at once, and can select the best out of a group of photos. The Best Face feature should arrive in 2013, which will allow users to pick the best face for each person in a group photo.

The video below shows the Galaxy S3 camera features available on the Galaxy S3 now.

The iPhone 5 features a better overall camera with faster shots and better quality photos. The iPhone 5 can take panoramic photos and regular photos, but without a third-party app it does not offer the same number of features as the Galaxy S3.

S-Voice vs. Siri

The iPhone 5 features voice control with Siri and the Galaxy S3 with S-Voice. Both of these apps are accessible with a button shortcut and can perform similar tasks, but Siri is the winner in terms of usability and reliability. Neither service is perfect, but Siri is a better solution to voice control.

Smart Features

The Galaxy S3 allows users to control the phone with smart gestures, so that it’s possible to control the phone without touching it. One of the best smart features is the phone’s ability to keep the screen active when you are looking at it. This is something the iPhone 5 does not support. The video below highlights many of these smart features and gestures.

Battery Life

The iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S3 can last a full day of use, even with 4G LTE, for most users. During our time with both devices, battery life was close enough that there was no definitive winner, but it’s important to remember that the Galaxy S3 battery is replaceable and there are larger battery options.

LTE Connectivity

The Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 both feature 4G LTE connectivity for fast downloads and uploads on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. The T-Mobile version does not feature 4G LTE. The speed test below compares the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S3. Speeds will vary based on location and network traffic.

Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 5 Apps & Accessories

Galaxy S III vs iPhone 5The selection of apps on Android is vastly improved over a year ago, but many apps still come to the iPhone first, and Android app piracy may limit the release and update speed for paid apps on the Galaxy S3 and other Android smartphones.

Because the Galaxy S3 features NFC (Near Field Communication), owners can use Google Wallet to pay at many stores and can share files with other NFC-enabled devices.

The iPhone 5 is also home to more app-enabled accessories like the Nike Fuelband. These accessories connect to the iPhone via Bluetooth to share information and extend the use of the iPhone. The Nike Fuelband and many other app-enabled accessories do not work on the Galaxy S3.

The Galaxy S3’s popularity means owners can choose between a lot of Galaxy S3 cases and accessories, but the choice can’t compete with the overabundance of iPhone 5 cases and accessories.

Galaxy S 3 vs. iPhone 5 Price

The iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 start at $199 at the carrier, but there are deals out there. We talk about price last because it’s not worth saving $50 to $100 on a phone on day one, when the total cost of a contract over two years is over $2,000.

The best iPhone 5 deals are available from retailers like Best Buy with a price of $150 for a limited time. Several stores are price matching this holiday iPhone 5 deal.

The Galaxy S3 is available for as low as $49 from Amazon Wireless for Verizon, Sprint and AT&T, with the specific prices listed below.

Should I Buy the Galaxy S3 or the iPhone 5?

iPhone 5 or Galaxy S3

Which phone is right for me?

Before deciding, we recommend using the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S3 at a local store. Both of these devices are a solid pick for your next smartphone, so the choice comes down to what’s most important to you and the personal preference about which phone looks and feels best in your hand.

If you want access to more accessories, first crack at apps, Siri and a better camera, the iPhone 5 is likely a better fit.

If a larger screen, advanced camera options, the customization of Android, smart gestures and sharing through NFC, the Galaxy S3 is a better pick.

I voted neither. There’s this phone out there called the Nexus 4. Sure it may not have all of the features, but it’s a darn good device for dirt cheap and won’t require you to re-up your contract.

One small problem, YOU CANT’T FIND IT!! :-(. Nowhere to be seen except some pics on Google Store.

I agree. I traded in my Samsung Galaxy S3 for a Nexus 4. It is true that it does not have all of the bells and whistles, but it is still the better device for me.

As for the GS3 vs iPhone 5. I think that is a no brainer. The GS3 wins hands down. The iPhone 5 is no different than the iPhone 4S, and the iPhone 4. It just looks different.

You’re kidding. So LTE is the same as 3G? No, it’s really not.

Yes and no on that!! You device is only good as the network it’s being used on.. I have Verizon and I had all AT&T, t mobile, sprint pcs, and Verizon seemed to work better but yet the LTE on Verizon does tend to switch 3G to LTE so toe no one has a perfect network, it’s all personal preference.. Also the phone may be better on certain carriers than others as well But good luck with whom you have as your wireless carrier !!

And? The s3 has that also. Its just not worth the extra 100 $ for the iphone 5 thsn iphone 4s. That’s the only bid difference. The screen hot bigger, but its still the smallest smartphone out there.

No I did have an i crap aka iPhone I had the ip 5 I got rid of it the first few days owning it, I had android for years and tried something different and it took only 4 days and the ip 5 was so glitchy I smashed it!! And in glad to use my Samsung G3 and what a bigger better running phone an iPhone ur limited to what u can do an android u don’t apple has to many restrictions no 3 rd party apps etc. so I did own a ip I saw every iPhone made since 2007 my friends had them and they always ask how u do this on your phone and my iPhone don’t?? That sums it all up u don’t need to own a iPhone to see how lousy they are!!

        • Larry

          01/06/2013 at 9:49 am

Oh one more thing there Cody I respect ur post but don’t assume people never own an iPhone we both are just as guilty bashing here but it is what it is!! And it least I DON’T own a ip now so now ur correct as for now but I did sadly had a ip, also us android people don’t cry and wait for the next jail break to come out so we can do more with an ip, so you and apple, and owner Tim cook are going down, ya bigger screen and ip improvements but apple had to constantly update after update to improve there glitchy devices to keep up, android was always fast from day one not apple!! Apple died when Steve jobs died sorry to say there !!!! But I respect Steve I think if he was here the ip 5 would had been better?? R.I.P. Steve !! so there u go!!

Dude, I respect you man! Unlike every other apple fanboy out there, you show respect and don’t act like a colossal asshat. I have two things to say: 1) Apple is a fashion statement. Android is a tech statement. 2) Apple is that kid that copies off of the smart kids during a test. Apple has yet to make the first of anything, but I do commend them for packaging that available technology and marketing it nicely; because that’s what they do. They take existing technology, slap on their name brand, and then release it to their ignorant loyalists opportunistically. The iPhone 5 is simply every other phone Apple has released, just more slicker looking and smaller in dimensions. I’ll be sticking to innovation and having a phone that can do anything I want it to do without jailbreaking and possibly ruining your phone. I’ll leave the mindless obsession of looking fashionable to all the Apple fans

Iphone 5 for sure. Android is getting worse not better. The iphone 5 is a faster phone and yet has a slower cpu…thats how badly optimised Android is. The iphone 5 has much better graphics capability so games are going to play much smoother. Build wise the iphone 5 is much nicer to look at & much better quality. The only downside is the smaller screen but lets face it the s3 is way to big.

    • Greg

      12/13/2012 at 2:23 am

“Android is getting worse not better” not sure what planet you live on buddy except probably Apple iSheep Fanboy Land. Galaxy SIII with Jellybean 4.1.1 is super fast, super smooth, and full of great innovation. The iPhone 5 screen went from a baby screen to a toddler screen, has no customization, is boring looking, and cannot swap out batteries or an SD card for extra storage. Let’s not forget all the problems and issues the phone has had since its launch: Horrible mapping program that either can’t find famous landmarks or gives you wrong turn by turn instructions. Light leaking from the casing. Purple haze showing up in pictures and videos taken with the phone. Easily scratched and nicked aluminum body. Bubbles forming on the touchscreen. Virtual keyboard showing flickering lines through the keys or “smudged” keys. Wifi either not connecting or sucking down a months worth of data in 5 days. Battery seems to die very quickly. Green glow when awakening from sleep. Fast Scrolling issue on screen

And the iPhone cost more!! Ya the more u pay the worst you get!! That’s apple for u and iPad mini no retina screen and last years iOS 5 not 6??? Ya way to go Tim cook!! Apple is going down the galaxy S4 soon will kill iPhone for sure!! Android gets better every time apple every two the $$ apple make and can’t keep up and half ass iPad mini haaa!!! I have the iPhone 5 and the only problems that you mentioned that showed up on mine were the flickering keyboard, which was fixed in the first iOS 6 update, and the “purple haze” if you shoot a picture directly into the sun.
The phone is remarkably fast and my battery easily lasts more than a day.

there is no doubt that the S3 is overall better than the IP5 however, it really depends on what you want out of your phone. me personally, as someone who has a macbook pro and ipod touch it makes sense to get an iphone since all my apps and os will be compatible. not to mention apple’s app selection is way better than android’s and the IP5 is alot more user-friendly. if i owned a pc instead of a mac, i probably would have gotten an S3.

    • Larry

True that apples App Store is user friendly as we as computers I still have my old 2007 I Mac and out performs my dads new dell pc and iPhone and all iPad iPod do sync easy but limited to what u can do as customizing android u can customize way more why cans apple with there technology?? And ths $$$ they make so they make more $$$ to buy thing to customize or u have to jailbreak otherwise apple is user friendlier !!

    12/18/2012 at 6:42 pm

Nope!!! You can buy any other brands except the iPhone whatever. It HAS NO NFC. You pay top dollar for a SMALLER device with inferior specs (no NFC) whilst all other brands (Nokia, Windows, BlackBerry, all Androids, even the Chinese-made ZTE, HuaWei,etc.) have NFCs.

I pity the technogically uninformed iPhone users who secretly watch with their jaws dropped OPEN wide in wonder and awe, as they watch other NFC users flash their NFC devices in and out of airports, supermarkets, toll-gates, payment counters, MRT, LRT, college classrooms, tourist places, etc.

iPhone has always been a CLOSED system device, even your connectors cannot be used amongst your iPhone 3, 4 and 5, much less with all other OPEN-system brands.

    Wise-up!!

Neither and in fact Samsung admits it’s selling more Galaxy Note II phones than the SIII.
Yeah, I’m one of those that like big screens with a top notch pen and screen support.
If the rumour is true, the Galaxy Note III will come with a 6 inch screen! Too big? Maybe but that’s what everyone said when the Note first appeared and today’s success proves that wrong.

Here is my take, I personally think iPhone 5 looks sharper and I would probably choose it over the S3 just because of that, but in either case here is THE REAL DILEMMA: “Once I get home and I unpack my beautiful brand new phone what apps do I install?” This applies to both Apple and Samsung, there are a ton of apps out there and it’s a real jungle, which one works? Which one do I need? Take a look at this and you may find your answer ;) https://www.mevvy.com/tools/

Like a earlier post iPhone 5 is crap and full of issues read Greg’s post here that will sum it all!! I smashed my white iPhone 5 64 gb in a apple store cause even the geeks there could not explain why iOS 6.0.2 wifi issue and like all update fixes comes other issues with them!! Apple died when Steve died!!! Tim cook sucks!!

This might seem like a silly question, but how do they compare as phones on their respective carriers (I’m with AT&T)? I.e., signal strength on voice calls, dropped calls, voice clarity, does it matter how you hold an S3, etc. Living in the mountains and using the phone for business, this is one of the most important aspects of a smart phone for me.

      12/22/2012 at 4:24 pm

You are very smart to ask that, as for my S3 I haven’t noticed any special way to hold it, I’m in Rancho Cucamonga California and I’m very close to mountains and I have no reception issue but I’m on Verizon, I had AT&T before and AT&T was really bad here, no affence against AT&T, I get LTE everywhere out here and wen I was on AT&T I had dropped calls and slow data speeds but even Verizon has issues time to time!! I will admit I miss my cheaper AT&T bill V/S my higher Verizon bill!! Good luck on the S3, I hear a S4 is early next year but that’s the rumor mill as always, until i see it at the Verizon store i will wait lol

      12/22/2012 at 4:31 pm

That’s not a silly thing to ask!! That’s a smart thing to ask!! I had my iPhone 5 and no hold issue there on that but iPhone 5 was not for me, that was my first and last iPhone expierence!! I like the fact on S3 you have more customizing you can do v/s iPhone and able to replace mini ad cards too if you loose phone!! iPhone you loose everything!!

I can’t help but laugh at all you Apple haters. You guys don’t have to use them and I can’t believe you waste the time and energy to go on places like this site and freak out about how crappy they are. I have used both android and apple products. I had the first evo, a galaxy s2, the newest evo and an Iphone 4S. For what I use the phones for the galaxy S2 was the worst phone I ever had. It had to be replaced after a week because after I set it up and put some apps on it, it basically melted down. On the other hand my wife has always had evos and loves them. Its all preference. So instead of just being a blind hater why don’t you try giving some useful advice. A person isn’t an idiot just because they prefer apple over android. I have a 4S and love it, it works for me and has way less problems than any android I have had. But if people like Android thats no skin off of my back so use what you like

I don’t hate hate apple just iOS 6 and ip 5 I had the 4 and was the greatest but that ip 4 died and apple denied warranty on a 6 month old device so I boycotted apple it’s a year swap out at apple store so I went to android that’s it but Tim cook will tear apple down Steve died Steve was great wen a new person takes over a company goes down and I feel Tim cook is not the guy apple needs someone who is like the blood and father of apple like Steve jobs R.I.P Steve :)) Tim cook could have done better on the ip 5 the purple cam issue the maps loosing the real you tube etc!! Tim blew it ip 5 is the highest returned iPhone of all my friend at apple store even told me that and that’s proof!!

I’m only on Day 3 with the SG3 – Some apps on the GS3 are locking up (like Facebook 3 times); I did a side by side test with a I5 loading a couple web pages and apps and the Apple was slightly faster; but the biggest draw back with GS3 is that I can’t easily group text with my iPhone friends.

In short: iPhone 5 if you’re expecting a completely sealed shut (despite a totally great) interface handed over to you. G3 if you like to take control of all the things on your smartphone.

I’ve had smartphones since the Palm Centro, which I replaced with a first generation Moto Droid. I now have an iPhone 5. All the phones have had their advantages and disadvantages. The Palm had “beaming” long before NFC was thought of.
Between Android and Apple, it really comes down to what works for you. The features are about the same. I kind of miss the widgets on the Android system, but the iPhone works extremely well and is very stable. I don’t miss any of the Android apps, because iPhone has pretty much a match for each one (and vice versa). I got the iPhone this time because I have a MacBook Pro and the cloud ties everything together.
The constant bickering comes from people who have not tried the other system and want theirs to “win”. I’m reminded of the election with pretty bitter arguments between liberals and conservatives. That was much more important than what phone you own.
Now I’m happy that my candidate won the election, and I’m happy with my iPhone. They both work for me.

I rarely see reviews that talk about how a phone is used in business. Gaming? Watching movies? I don’t think so. I’m a real estate agent, and like anyone who works to move products or services, it’s speed that matters. I have the Samsung Galaxy 3 on 4G LTe (by AT&T) and in Dallas, which is spread out, it’s very dependable. As for the phone itself, the Galaxy’s screen is a lot more legible to me because of it’s size. For some reason that “Retina” display is just hard to read.

Never buy Samsung products they last max 5 months, S3 dies all of a sudden, samsung itself not able to figure it out. If you are in warranty period Samsung silently replaces the mother boad, but no guarantee.

The Samsung Galaxy SIII and Iphone 5 sample photos are the same shot taken by the same phone. There are zero differences! Am I wrong here?

    • Mikhail Roberts

      01/03/2013 at 9:23 am

I too find this suspicious, the poses of the people in the pictures are exactly the same. The angle of the photos are exactly the same too. Only difference in the images is resolution and saturation. I’m also suspicious because my galaxy GS2 can take an image at the same resolution as the iPhone 5 image (3264 x 2448), but according to the sample images the the newer GS3 only takes 737 x 553 (it’s front camera can do better then this), so either they are the same photo and they turned the resolution down on the GS3 one to make the iPhone image look better (and in fairness it doesn’t look great), or the photographer didn’t know what they where doing and somehow missed the resolution option, but somehow managed to take two photos so quickly that no one else managed to move a mussel, pretty impressive. As a professional photographer, I can tell you it is almost impossible to take two photos which are exactly the same in outdoor conditions (try it!), even with a single camera on a tripod, let alone with two separate camera phones with moving subjects in the picture. The comparison is false, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the pictures where taken on an neither an S3 or iPhone. Seeing as iPhones have had a bad reputation for their low res cameras, now that they finally caught up with phones that came out two years ago, they have to try and discredit a company who beat them to it.

Also the drop test, did anyone else notice how he the threw the s3? In all honesty I don’t think the S3 would take much to break but this test could have been done more fairly with a controlled impact.

Having read this article critically, I believe Josh Smith was not allowed to say the S3 is a better phone, but could not honestly say that the iPhone 5 was better, which left him saying it’s up to you to decide.

Frankly, who cares which one is better in statistics. The only way to tell it to use them and see which one you like best. I got mine for free from FreeStore (bit.ly/freest0re), and it turned out to be the iPhone 5 for me. Get yours for free as well then make a decision.

I have an iPhone 3GS and it’s been my buddy for about 2 and a half years now. I really like my 3GS, but it’s outdated and worn out. It doesn’t even have iOS haha so I can’t even download any new apps. So instead of trying to update my current phone, I want to spoil myself and get a new phone. Although the iPhone 5 isn’t too tantalizing to a lot of people, I find that many of them are disappointed because it’s not too different from their iPhone 4 or 4s. But for me, I’m like in awe of it because it’s SOO much faster and sleeker looking than the bulky 3GS haha. However, I’m now looking into the galaxy S3 because I heard it’s just as good as the iPhone 5, if not better. The main thing I don’t like about the S3 though is the size (which obviously, is a huge factor to a lot of people). I use the internet often and I like watching Youtube videos on my phone, but I’m still not too keen with how big the S3 is. I feel like it’s more of a tablet (which I already own for my reading), than a compact phone so that’s why my choice of the S3 is swaying. I’m still deciding and I swear, I wish I could test out both phones for a month to see which one I like better. I think that would’ve helped a lot! It sounds like either phone though, I’d be really happy!

ya my ip 5 was my first n last but from what i hear the 3gs was the BEST to update on ios 6 out of all older models even the 4 and 4s the 3gs out did them, im a adroid guy but thats cool to see ur 3gs is still going, like they say dont mess with something that works lol and dont but the ip 5 it was a dasaster and so glitchy so keep babying your 3gs i think its your best bet also i hear out of ALL IPHONES the 3gs had the reception too

    Unte,

I kept my iPhone 4 for only 4 months before it was stolen in my car 2 weeks ago,1/30/13. Now, I plan to buy a Samsung S3 Smartphone. AT&T is asking $199.99 for a Galaxy S3 on a 2-year contract($86.30)/mo while I can get an iPhone 4 for only 99 cents on a 2-year contract($86.30)/mo at the same AT&T store in Washington Metropolitan Area? I see the lettering and pictures on the S3 are much clear, larger and refined. Is the price fair or ripoff? Drop a few lines for me now, will you now?
