Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 Breakdown (Final)

With the Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update rolling out and the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates on their way, it’s no surprise that the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 update is coming to a close. In our final breakdown we take a look at what’s left and take a look at what’s ahead for owners of Samsung’s older Galaxy smartphones.

For those that need a bit of a history lesson, the Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates were first announced all the way back in October. The company all but confirmed them for arrival on stage at the Galaxy Note 3’s launch event and a few days later, it outright confirmed their upcoming releases.

In late October, the Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update started pushing out for users in the United States and elsewhere. The update, like the ones for the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3, delivered not only Android 4.3 features but Galaxy Gear support and Samsung Knox, two powerful and important features.

In November, the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates began to roll out and since then they, along with the Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 update, have been landing for devices around the globe.

And believe or not the Galaxy Nexus Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update is still active as well. The Galaxy Nexus Android 4.3 update started rolling out last July and in the past few weeks, we’ve seen some new developments emerge.

We’ve been taking detailed looks at the Galaxy Android 4.3 update progress and today, we will break the release down for a final time. With Android 4.4 KitKat on the way for the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 (the Galaxy Nexus won’t get it), we take one last look at Android 4.3 Jelly Bean for Samsung’s four popular Galaxy smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update release isn’t going to move much further. At most, it might have one last roll out left in the tank but even then, nothing is guaranteed.

Last week, we saw a stunning development with this update. Vodafone Australia, a carrier that tested the Galaxy Nexus Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update and had said that it was just awaiting an FOTA, announced that Samsung had cancelled the update and that it would remain on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

The news came as a shock to Galaxy Nexus owners and as a shock to us. This isn’t the news that Verizon Galaxy Nexus users, who are still missing the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update, wanted to hear.

The Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.3 update remains missing in action and there is no guarantee that it will ever roll out. Verizon told us last year that it was still planned for release but it’s almost April and we haven’t seen anything emerge.

We’d start tempering our expectations and perhaps, start looking at the Android 4.3 and Android 4.4 KitKat ROMs that are available amongst the development community.

It also looks like some users on Telstra, an Australian carrier that supposedly pushed the Galaxy Nexus Android 4.3 update weeks ago, are still waiting for the update.

Samsung Galaxy S4

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update roll out is in full swing which makes these remaining Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates look pretty silly.

From what we can tell, there are only a few updates left. Optus still owes one to its Galaxy S4 4G Plus users and it looks like that update is currently in testing and will roll out later on this month or in early April. It all depends on how testing goes.

Telstra still says that its Galaxy S4 Cat 4 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update is in testing but there are users who have reportedly been able to pull the update through Samsung Kies. Several of them claim to have it on board their device despite Telstra’s reluctance to confirm an official release of the software. Look for this situation to be resolved in the coming days.

Vodafone Australia issued a new update timeline for its users today and the carrier now says that the Galaxy S4 Cat 4 Android 4.3 update is in testing. That should mean that it will roll out within the next few weeks, that is, unless it’s cancelled. Joking aside, it looks like users many not have to wait long for Android 4.4 KitKat once the update is deployed.

Vodafone says that it has Android 4.4 KitKat testing scheduled for both the Cat 4 Galaxy S4 and the regular old Galaxy S4. So, in other words, we could see rapid deployment for some Galaxy S4 users.

Samsung Galaxy S3

The Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update release still has a few updates left to go. Optus is still working to get the update out to its 3G and 4G variants and says that the updates are currently slated for late March or early April.

Telstra is one of the only other carriers that we can find with Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 update information and it says that it will be deploying the update in April. That’s a target which means that it could arrive later than that. We expect these three Android 4.3 updates to push out in the next few weeks.

The future for the Galaxy S3 is unclear. The 2GB model in the United States will be getting the update but Samsung Poland has said that the 1GB Galaxy S3 will not be getting Android 4.3. It’s a situation that remains unresolved. Look for these carriers to confirm something either way in the weeks ahead.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

We are currently unable to find any information for upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates. While there still may be lingering updates, we can’t find them. And that’s a good sign because it means that most updates have probably rolled out to Samsung Galaxy Note 2 owners.

Up next for the Galaxy Note 2 is Android 4.4 KitKat. Samsung USA, Samsung Poland, Sprint, Optus, and now Vodafone Australia have all confirmed the update for arrival and we should see those updates emerge starting in April.
