Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Note 2 Android 4.3 Update Breakdown (2014)

Published

on

In October and November, Samsung started rolling out Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates. And while many of those updates have rolled out, there are still some major updates that have yet to emerge, even as Android 4.4 KitKat update rumors continue to swirl. Here, we breakdown the current Samsung Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update situation.

Back in April, the Samsung Galaxy S4 hit shelves with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on board. At the time, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean was Google’s most current version of Android. Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 owners figured they would be next in line to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It didn’t turn out that way. Instead, Samsung skipped Android 4.2 Jelly Bean in favor of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean was announced in July, just weeks after the arrival of the Galaxy S4. And while it rolled out to Nexus devices in July, it didn’t start hitting Samsung’s smartphones until late 2013, something that rumors accurately predicted months prior to the official announcements.

The Galaxy Note 3 design could feature thinner bezels like the Galaxy S4 to stay with a similar size.

In October, Samsung confirmed Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates. A few days later, the Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 update rolled out. In November, the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 updates started rolling out and since then, carriers have been pushing out updates to their customers.

As expected, the Android 4.3 updates are much more than Android 4.3. They bring Galaxy S4 software features to the Galaxy S3 and they also bring the Galaxy Note 3’s brand new Multi-Window View to the Galaxy Note 2.

We’re now in 2014 and the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates are still rolling out. We’ve been tracking what’s left of these updates and here, we take at look at Samsung’s progress as these roll outs wind down.

Samsung Galaxy S4

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean roll out has wound down in the United States but that doesn’t mean that the roll out is completely done. Updates continue to emerge for carriers around the world, most recently in Venezuela and on Australian carrier Telstra, the latter of which just saw the update become available through Samsung Kies.

Telstra was one of the few major carriers left that hadn’t updated the Galaxy S4 with Android 4.3 so it’s pretty clear that the Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 update is extremely close to completion. Those who have yet to see the update should see it emerge in the near future.

French carrier SFR has said that it will roll out the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update in late January or early February and it would be extremely odd to see the Android 4.3 roll out collide with Android 4.4 KitKat.

Samsung’s Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update roll out continues as well, weeks after the roll out finished up in the United States. The update, most recently, hit carriers in Singapore and it’s scheduled to land for the Galaxy S3 LTE on French carrier SFR sometime this month after a slight delay.

Australian carrier Telstra remains one of the last major carriers without a Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update and the carrier is still not sure when the update will be deployed. Recently, the carrier pushed out an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update right as some Galaxy S3 variants were receiving Android 4.3. It’s still not clear if the company will follow suit.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 update, which starting rolling out last, remains active and there are still several major updates remaining in action. The update recently landed for the 3G version of SFR’s Galaxy Note 2 and we’ve also heard that it hit Taiwan within the last couple of days as well.

Still, there are two major updates missing. French carrier SFR still hasn’t rolled out its Galaxy Note 2 LTE Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update though it claims that the update should land sometime this month. Galaxy Note 2 customers on Australian carrier Telstra are in even worse shape it seems thanks to an unforeseen delay.

The carrier originally promised to roll out the update by December 23rd, though, thanks to user complaints, we know that this hasn’t happened. The carrier has apologized and says that it’s working to figure out the source of the delay. It has not, however, provided any kind of time frame for its users.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is still without its Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update and it’s still not clear when the update will be arriving. AT&T, the carrier the Galaxy S4 Active calls home, has yet to announce anything in terms of timing and likely won’t. With an Android 4.4 KitKat update on the way for the Galaxy S4, owners will be wondering whether they’ll be getting Android 4.3 or moving straight to Android 4.4.

Why do you never talk about unlocked devices? Logically, unlocked devices should have updates well before the phones provided by operators… For the s3,that’s not the case, still no 4.3 for international version… Maybe they’ll skip 4.3 for 4.4 ;-)

I just got the 4.3 update on my international unlocked S3. And I think Kit Kat is not supposed to roll out for S3 until April/May. So I’m guessing there will be a previous 4.3 update, to make the devices Galaxy Gear compatible.

Does any one know what thw software is like? I’ve seen many reports of it being incredibly laggy, unreliable and the device will not wake up after seconds, sonetimes minutes of waiting after pressing the home/lock button. Could someone please tell me their encounters with 4.3 (Galaxy S3) are like please? Like every other GS3 user, I’ve waited a long time for this update!

I live in the United States and have a Galaxy S3. I wouldn’t wish the update on my worst enemy! It’s terrible. The phone locks up, apps either won’t stop running or won’t open at all. My music won’t play and when it does it stops every 5 seconds. I’ve tried everything to try to fix it myself but no luck. I can’t even turn the phone off when I want to. The battery drains very fast too. I really hope they fix this soon!
