8 Common Galaxy S5 Lollipop Problems & How to Fix Them

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop update delivers a number of big changes including Google’s new Material Design. The update’s also brought some features that weren’t listed on the change log: Samsung Galaxy S5 Lollipop problems. With Android 5.0 problems mounting, we want to take a look at some potential fixes for these issues.

In December, Samsung started rolling out the Galaxy S5 Lollipop update. The update represents the device’s first major Android update and as expected, it brings some huge changes to the Galaxy S5. Samsung’s loaded up this update performance enhancements, design changes, new features, and more. Carriers have also done their part and service providers like Sprint and Verizon have tacked on their own improvements.

For some Galaxy S5 users, Lollipop is working out just fine. We’ve spoken to several that are experiencing solid performance after making the jump from Android 4.4 KitKat. There’s another side of the coin though.

We’ve also spoken to some Galaxy S5 owners who are running into Android 5.0 Lollipop problems after moving to Samsung’s latest update. We’ve pointed out a number of these Galaxy S5 Lollipop issues and the list continues to grow as more and more Galaxy S5 users receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. With plenty of updates to go, we expect the list to expand even further as the year goes on.

We’re still not sure when Samsung or carriers like Sprint and Verizon will roll out their first Android 5.0 Lollipop bug fix updates so we want to do our part and help try and solve some of these issues ahead these releases.

Here, we take a look at some of the Galaxy S5 Lollipop problems that have popped up for users in recent weeks and offer some possible fixes for these issues. These will help Sprint and Verizon Galaxy S5 Lollipop users and they should prove beneficial to AT&T, U.S. Cellular, and T-Mobile Galaxy S5 users as well.

How to Fix Galaxy S5 Lollipop Battery Life Problems

Battery life problems are among the most common smartphone afflictions. That’s why it hasn’t been surprising to see Galaxy S5 users in the United States and elsewhere complain about abnormal battery drain after its first major Android update.

As we’ve pointed out, Galaxy S5 Lollipop battery life problems are among the biggest problems effecting Galaxy S5 users. Users on Sprint and Verizon are complaining about bad battery life in the days after the update’s release and many users are becoming frustrated by the whole experience. While there is no guaranteed fix, there are certainly a few things to try before taking the phone into a store.

In our experience, third-party apps are the cause of most post-release Android battery life problems. Apps are the first place we would look if the Galaxy S5 starts exhibiting bad battery life after getting Android 5.0 Lollipop on board.

Galaxy-S5-Review-12-620x413

First, we recommend booting into Safe Mode. Booting the Galaxy S5 into Safe Mode will disable third-party applications which will allow users to identify potential culprits. Isolating applications will take a lot of your time (you’ll need to do some uninstalling) but it’s worth a shot if the Galaxy S5’s battery isn’t holding up.

Here’s how to boot the Galaxy S5 into Safe Mode:

  1. Power down the device. Then, press & hold the Power button and volume down key.
  2. Once it boots up, you can let go of the power button but keep the volume key held down.
  3. When you have successfully entered into Safe Mode, you will notice the text ‘Safe Mode’ at the bottom left corner of the screen.

We recommend keeping the Galaxy S5’s applications updated with the latest bug fixes and enhancements. Make sure to gather feedback from fellow users before doing so.

It’s also worth restarting the Galaxy S5 to see if that gets rid of the problem. This quick reboot will clear the cache and kill off services that might be eating away at the battery. Galaxy S5 users might also try disabling NFC and Bluetooth. We also suggest getting rid of live wallpapers. Live wallpapers have the potential to chew through battery in the background.

How to Fix Galaxy S5 Lollipop Wi-Fi Problems

Complaints about smartphone Wi-Fi are also extremely common so it hasn’t been shocking to see Samsung Galaxy S5 users report poor connectivity after getting the update on board. We’ve seen complaints about slow connections, about connections abruptly dropping and more. Fortunately, there are a few potential solutions.

The first thing to do is reboot the Galaxy S5. Users will also want to try rebooting the local router if that hasn’t been done in awhile. We recommend unplugging the router for a good 30 seconds and then plugging it back in. Users can do the same for your modem as well. If that doesn’t work, Galaxy S5 owners experiencing Wi-Fi problems might also consider updating the routers firmware. If those simple fixes do not work, it’s now time to head into the device’s settings.

Galaxy-S5-Review-11-620x413

First, try forcing the Galaxy S5 to forget the Wi-Fi network that’s posing problems. Head to the desired connection in Settings and select the Forget Network option. Once that’s done, users will then need to reconnect to the Wi-Fi network with the password so make sure that it’s readily available.

It’s also worth going into Power Saving Mode to see if Wi-Fi restrictions are in place. To access Power Saving Mode, head into Settings and then into the Power Saving Mode option. This is a known fix for Wi-Fi issues.

If none of those fixes dislodge the Galaxy S5 Lollipop Wi-Fi problems, we recommend updating applications. Users can also try booting into safe mode to see if apps are really the issue. If apps aren’t causing the problem then it’s probably worth trying another router to see if it’s a hardware problem.

How to Fix Galaxy S5 Lollipop Bluetooth Problems

Bluetooth issues are common after major Android updates and the Galaxy S5 Lollipop update is no different. We’re seeing a number of complaints about broken Bluetooth connections after the Lollipop upgrade and we expect complaints to continue for as long as Lollipop is around. There are a few things to try if the Galaxy S5 Bluetooth starts acting up.

Galaxy S5 users that encounter problems should try shifting Bluetooth on and off. To do this, head into Settings and then Bluetooth and toggle the service off and then back on again after a few moments. If that doesn’t fix the problem, it’s time to forget Bluetooth connections. Head into Bluetooth and forget the problem device or devices. Then, reconnect.

How-to-use-the-Galaxy-S5-Camera-620x361

Users trying to connect to a car, will need to consult the car’s manual to reset the car’s Bluetooth. The process is going to be different for each make and model, that’s why we recommend consulting the car’s manual. Once that connection has been reset and the connection’s been forgotten on the Galaxy S5, try reconnecting to see if it works.

If none of that works, we also recommend booting into Safe Mode (the instructions can be found above) which will disable third-party applications. This will allow users to check and see if apps are causing the Wi-Fi problems.

How to Fix Galaxy S5 Lollipop Overheating Problems

Some Galaxy S5 Lollipop users say that the device has started running extremely hot after the arrival of Android 5.0 Lollipop. This can happen when playing an intense game for a few hours straight but many users are saying that it’s happening without much provocation. Thankfully, there are a few fixes to try if the Galaxy S5 gives off abnormal heat with Android 5.0 on board.

First, try restarting the Galaxy S5. Leave it off for a minute or so and then boot it back up. If that doesn’t work, power it down again and this time, remove the battery and microSD card from the microSD card slot if there is one. Pop the battery back in without the microSD card in and see if that works. This has worked for us in the past.

If none of that works, we suggest booting into Safe Mode to see if it’s an app that’s causing problems. A rogue app could be overworking itself so it’s important to check to see if that’s what might be occurring.

How to Fix Galaxy S5 Lollipop Performance Problems

We’ve seen some complaints about performance post-Android 5.0 Lollipop release with users reporting random freezing and lag after moving from Android 4.4 KitKat. Galaxy S5 users experiencing abnormal lag or sluggishness will be happy to know that there are an array of fixes to try and help stabilize the performance of Android.

The first potential fix that we recommend is a process that will clear the Galaxy S5’s cache partition. To clear the cache partition on the Galaxy S5, follow these steps:

  • Turn the Galaxy S5 off.
  • Press and hold Home, Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the device vibrates.
  • When the Samsung logo appears, release them.
  • Tap Volume Down repeatedly until you Wipe Cache Partition. Select it with the power button. Select Yes.
  • Wait for the process to complete. It could take awhile.
  • Reboot your Galaxy S5.

We also recommend halting the use of live wallpapers, they can negatively impact performance. You can also try toggling NFC off when it’s not in use because this often provides useful gains in performance.

Galaxy S5 users can also try turning off animations if performance really starts taking a tumble. To do this, hold down on a blank space on the screen, go to the Home Screen Settings then Transition effect and select None. Users can also try disabling some applications through Application Manager in device settings.

How to Fix Galaxy S5 Lollipop App Problems

Samsung Galaxy S5 users experiencing issues with applications can try a few things to jumpstart performance. First, try updating the problem app. There’s a good chance that the developer’s rolled out a bug fix so users be wise to give that a shot first.

We also recommend reinstalling the application. We’ve seen success with this method several times in the past and it could resolve issues with app performance after Lollipop.

Galaxy-S5-Review-2-620x413

If the problems continue, reach out to the developer and alert them to the problem. This will help them identify the problem and potentially fix it in a later update.

How to Fix Galaxy S5 Lollipop GPS Problems

Some Galaxy S5 users are experiencing GPS issues after the move to Android 5.0 Lollipop. There are a few fixes to try before giving up and spending the time to go to a store for help.

The first thing to do is to go into Settings, Location and then make sure Mode is set to High Accuracy. If that doesn’t solve the issue, it’s time to boot the phone into safe mode to see if a third-party application is causing the problem. We’ve had success with this in the past and it’s worth a shot if GPS starts acting up.

How to Fix Galaxy S5 Lollipop Problems If Nothing Else Works

If nothing here works, it’s probably time to revert back to Android 4.4 KitKat. Or if that doesn’t sound appealing, factory reset the device. For help with reverting back to Android 4.4 KitKat, Galaxy S5 users will want to head here.

5.5-inch iPhone 6 vs Galaxy S5

Those looking to factory reset should note that it’s a time consuming process and Galaxy S5 users will need to ensure that key files are backed up before starting. This process erases the entire phone and brings it back to the state that it was in when it first came out of the box.

To do this, go into SettingsUser & Backup, and select Backup and Reset. From there, select Factory Data Reset. From there, select Reset Device and then Delete All.

If for whatever reason that doesn’t work, users can also factory reset using the hardware keys on the phone. Here’s how to do that. It’s a far more difficult process. We recommend the above route if possible.

  • First, you’ll need to turn the Galaxy S5 off.
  • Once its off, press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power buttons together until you see an Android appear on the screen.
  • Once you see this, use the Volume down key to highlight the Wipe Data/Factory Reset option. Use the Power button to select it.
  • Use the Volume down key to select Yes – delete all user data and then use the Power button again to select it.
  • When you see the Reboot System Now option, you’ll know you’re on track. Use the Power button to select that option.
  • This will erase everything on the Galaxy S5 bringing it back to the state it was in when you first bought it. It also might fix the problems you’re having.

Sometimes, unorthodox fixes will work where common fixes fail. We also recommend taking a look at Android Central’s forums, one of our favorite Android-centric forums. For those still unable to fix Galaxy S5 Lollipop problems, we suggest getting in touch with the device’s service provider. If there isn’t one, get in contact with Samsung itself.

UPDATE- ended up having to go to reset mode, wipe cache, clean and reinstall lollipop. Yes, his very last step. Now phone works great

Lollipop is absolute garbage on my verizon S5. The new priority notifications functionality is both stupid and broken. I had to uninstall my 3rd party sound profile apps because the phone would unmute itself at times when I have to be on vibrate! So I decided to use the stupid new priority notifications and guess what? Even though I specified that I must be on vibrate from 9-5, the volume magically turned up to MAX around midday. Google, fix your piece of excrement!

Made my S5 feel like Windows Milennium or something. Extremely buggy and slow.

Besides the phone being way slower, jumping in and out of WiFi constantly, battery dying alot faster, heating up and getting hot for no reason, not picking up a charge fast enough there also is something I noticed that I’m disappointed about and that’s the settings …..you can’t change the vibration setting when you get texts anymore why did you guys disable that? I liked being able to set apart my texts from my emails and phone calls and now it’s all just a long drawn out vibration for everything but calls. Super irritating ….liked when I could customize that stuff . .

I hate when they take away features. Biggest issue is car mode. It sucked on the s2 ics. S5 KK worked great. Now lollipop ruined it again. No option to turn off blue tooth, which I don’t use. I use wired earphones. Which I just lay on my shoulder because I have kids in the car, and or listen to radio. Then when I hear my ringer/alert I put in earbud and listen to text. Now it no longer alerts through phone, only through earbud so I don’t hear it. Without earbud plugged in, it also only comes through earpiece not speaker like I’m holding the phone to my ear to use car mode. So again can’t hear alerts.
Takes forever to exit car mode, no longer to hit back button our home screen and multi task. Aka so light, step out of car for a second.

In addition yes battery life is worse, absolutely hate the ugly orange, and the white backgroundin the messaging app. Phone seems more sluggish.

This is horrible! I have absolutely NO sound anymore. Can’t play music, alarm doesn’t work, Bluetooth only works for calls in my car, otherwise just keeps disconnecting. Wtf is this piece of crap update??
and the only solutions I can find is to factory reset? Seriously? I have to start all over jist because of a stupid update? Ugh I’m almost tempted to switch to apple, god forbid!

Seems most of the solutions were to reboot the phone with differences in how long you leave it off for. Waste of 5 minutes. reading.

Since the update im having several different problems… Firstly it keeps coming up contact has stopped when iv not even been to my contacts . People have been sending me texts that I never received and when they ring it goes to answer phone. So they resort to wats Appin me so I restart my phone then all of my messages have completely gone with no evidence of any txts being there! They only come back when I take the battery out and restart that way and even then the txts I never received still don’t come through! My screen is constantly hot and my brightness is set to auto and never had the problem before. My battery rarely lasts until tea time and it used to lat me the whole day. I’m not doin anyway different to i did before the update. I’m seriously fuming with this update

This is a little late, but I was having the same problem with crashing apps. Just found a fix that has been working for me so far.

Power off your Samsung Galaxy S5 by long pressing the Power On/ Off button. Wait until the device is completely shut down. Now you have to press the following keys at the same time to turn on the phone again:

        • Power On / Off
        • Volume up
        • Home button

If the Samsung Galaxy S5 vibrates once, release the power on/ off button, but keep the other two keys from the key combination pressed until a menu appears on the display.
Now mark the entry “Wipe cache partition” with the volume down key. With the power on / off button, the entry can be selected and the process will start.
This usually takes only a few seconds. Then the previously displayed menu appears again. Now select the first entry “Reboot system now” and run the command again with pressing the power button.

I had the WiFi issue also but somehow after many restarts that has stopped. Magic.
My phone is sluggish and freezes quite a lot so I tried the Clearing Cache instructions in the article and they didn’t work. Never got to that screen. The phone warns that changing the OS system could be damaging and asks if that is what I’d like to do. Answering No just took me to a restart.
My email also is excruciatingly slow. I know I have too many emails in there but it was not an issue before the upgrade. It’s painful how slow it is and how often it freezes. I can’t really use it at all.
Lastly, I have yet to come across anything working better now that I have the upgrade. But I’m sure there’s got to be something…

Had a few problems, but clearing caches in all programs plus clearing Data in Google play
Toughest one to figure out was removing all updates from Google Apps then re-updating.

After updating to Lollipop, I had a the typical bug issues, especially battery drain (20% per halls hour) and overheating while sitting idle with the screen off.

After clearing the partition cache, it worked a lot better for a couple of days. But, the problems returned.

Finally, I did a factory reset. That was the cure. Now I run proper battery life and temps.

My guess is that there must be some residual applications from Kit Kat that are causing the problem. The factory reset gets rid of them.

Note: factory reset is drastic. You are wiping all info off the phone and leaving only the new OS & phone carrier bloatware they built into their Lollipop variant.

After being very frustrated by the Lollipop update I started exploring some of the settings on my S5 (Verizon)m I found what looks like Process monitor which I am familiar with from PC systems under the Developer Options area. By looking through programs running in background I noticed that I had various Kindle and Amazon Apps that were very high in use time on 6 and 12 hour settings. Since I have never used any Amazon based app or Kindle App I was quite surprised by this and initiated a force stop on all Amazon or Kindle apps I found running. The difference in performance was noticeable as soon as I returned to my home screen and started using my regular apps. I encourage other people to look and see what is running in background and post items they have done a forced shut down on to make a difference in performance. I hope this helps, I don’t know if these apps will be the same culprits for other people but it may be a good starting point.

At first it was just that contacts would stop working and I had lag. I dealt with it, waiting tIL April 10th for the S6.

Yesterday, suddenly I got a pop up every 5 seconds that “phone stopped working.” Message would pop up, I’d press ok, and literally seconds later it would pop up again. I was luck if I could press a single button or scroll at all.

No choice but a hard reset. It reset in lollipop, and performance had been so much better. No lag, no pop up advertisements after closing an app. Did get the contacts stopped pop up a few times.

Still can’t wait to trade up to S6.

My phone has been updated tonight to Lollipop 5…who do I throw my formerly loved phone at first?
It now looks like a circus with bawdy color schemes and tiny (ugly) icons…if I had really wanted all this, I would’ve purchased an iPhone in the first place.

This update has killed my battery life and is ao laggy.
I tried the clear cache thing but when I restart my phone that way, (holding the 3 buttons with the phone off) it warns me that installing a custom OS will ruin the phone then starts saying “downloading”… any ideas.

My bluetooth connection in my car is unusable after the lollipop upgrade. it just keeps connecting and disconnecting the phone. This is dangerous and making it illegal for me to do my job without bluetooth. My husband has the same phone and did not upgrade and his phone works great still with my car. Neither verizon or dealership can fix. I need a fix NOW!

I think it’s ridiculous to have to do all this work to a phone that was working perfectly fine before this update. They need to fix the software, it’s been out long enough and too many people are having issues. At least if it were Apple they would have addressed the issues by now.

Wish I’d never upgraded! Hate it! Liked my phone just the way it was – now it looks cheap & tacky, can’t seem to personalise it away from that look either, & worst of all coz it reset everything, and signed me into Google+ I lost my whole (recently refreshed 4GB!) month’s worth of mobile data when it (without my permission) uploaded all my photos (approx 2000!) off my SD card! Really not happy! May go back to Nokia! Scoff!

This lollipop update does more than drain the battery, use up data off of WiFi, even when I directed to only update apps on WiFi, does not integrate with google maps, and when it does it ‘assumes’ it knows where I want to go. Google has clearly made a deal with the major carriers to follow everything I do from emailing to web searching. Just because I search for Glenn on my web search, doesn’t mean I want to go to Dr. Glenn when I use my map. Don’t even get me started on the backwards, grammatically incorrect “only/always/never interrupt for priority notifications” for 1 hr, 2 hrs, 4 hrs, or hrs….and if I sleep for 6 or 7? Then what? I miss my alarm and am late for work, that’s what! Being forced to download this update is coercion and not having the ability to disregard it is unacceptable. The battery is being drained and the phone is getting hot because Google is following every tap you make. Think about what that means…it means we are paying our carrier to allow Google to track everything, use our data and cause us to go over our data allowance, and we can’t control it. Minority report was ahead of its time. I’m afraid for where this is going next.

This new Galaxy S5 Verizon wireless update has caused more than a few issues with my phone. This is shit for an update how could they release and almost force a phone to be updated and not know the issues that would be caused by it.

I went for the nuclear option and did a factory reset. Before it ran hot and the battery life was, of course, low (it doesn’t get hot because it’s capturing cosmic rays, that only comes from battery power), lots of things weren’t quite right. After the factory reset I spent an evening re-installing only the things I actually need or want, not the things I used once. Now it works great… except for the music player deciding it needs to run every time the phone connects to the car, which I find extremely irritating.

Samsung S5 – I think I know what the “S” stands for! Arguably the worst phone I’ve used, constantly dropping calls on EE network, freezes constantly, struggles with texts, emails etc. which are pretty essential for business users, let alone the apps which the phone can barely handle. Took phone back to EE who said it was a manufacturer’s problem not theirs; have performed two factory resets, losing key contacts in the process (yes, Samsung Kies is just as shit as the hardware ) DON’T waste time and money on this junk, get an iPhone -I’ve got 21 months left on my Samsung contract but it’s such a crap product I’d rather write it off and start again with something that works. Most of my business colleagues have drawn the same conclusion…ask the audience, it’s usually right. ..

Worked fine before update. Why couldn’t have Samsung just have left it alone. And can’t create new contact while on the line and I need that option, this is 2015 not the 1960s pen and paper crap

Anyone having a problem placing calls? It doesn’t matter if I use a number from contact, the log or keypad, or a number on a Web page. The first time I try to make the call, the number disappears when I hit the connect button. If I try again, the call goes through. This I s on EVERY call I’m msking. Any ideas?

Worst article I have ever read. Blames every issue on router, apps or cache not the lollipop update. If my other 10 device in my home have no wifi issues except the android phone with lollipop then it can’t be the router? Wasted 10 minutes of my life reading this garbage.

There is a way to upgrade your S5 to latest Lollipop released by your carrier without having most of those issues. This method requires some effort by user. Factory reset must be done prior to update, not other way around.

Few notes before doing the update:

    1.      This is a safe method to update any android/Apple OS to avoid most bugs and lags caused by latest update.

    2.      This is not a “solution” if you have already updated OS of your device and experiencing problems.

    3.      Forget about updating your OS over the air.

    4.      Forget about updating your OS while your device is loaded with 1000 random apps

    5.      Make sure device battery is charged more than 70 percent.

    6.      Do not unplug or shut down your device while updating OS or doing a Factory reset

Steps (this is a fresh and clean OS update process):

    1.      Backup your mobile contents (music, photos, videos, documents etc) on your PC whether they are on your device storage and/or on SD card.

    2.      Sync all your accounts (application data, games, contacts, calendar etc) with your itunes account if iPhone, or with Google account if Android (you can do it over wifi)

    3.      Remove SD card if Android, format your SD card

    4.      Do a Factory Reset which will erase all settings and contents

    5.      When your device boots up, skip setup.

    6.      Plugin your device to your PC.

    7.      To update new OS, use appropriate manufacturer PC software of your device while connected to PC. For example, use iTunes in iPhone or use Samsung Kies if Samsung Android. For S4 use Kies3.

    8.      Once your device reboots after new OS update, do another Factory Reset.

    9.      Once your device reboots after 2nd Factory Reset, proceed with phone setup with your iTunes account or Google account. Your apps, contacts, calendar etc will be synced to your device. Allow your device to apply latest updates for all your applications (device may get hot during this process; installing 100 apps from app store. This is okay, your device is working at max level, downloading and installing update for each app one after another)

    10.  If iPhone, do a fresh restore of your mobile content backup on PC; or if Android, simply copy backup contents to Device Storage or SD card (most preferable).

While your friends are whining about their Lollipop update on their S4, S5; you will be enjoying your new Lollipop update.

WOW…the solution always seems to be “reboot.” How about “repurchase an iPhone if you want stability

Never again will I get an android phone. How ruthless that so many people have complaints about this stupid update and yet they are still offering it without fixing the glitches. An update that actually makes the phone worse is stupid and irresponsible. They don’t even care to respond to the issues and then this supposed quick fix is not working for me. I’ve tried seven or eight times and I’m past passed off. Why would it disable the damn home button? How stupid are the techs down at , Android that they can’t fix this seemingly simple problem. Idiots. Thanks for informing me of why iPhones are so popular…

I figured out how to fix all this Lollipop stuff.

I am.getting an I phone tomorrow. SAMSUNG IS A TOTAL CRAP COMPANY. For what people pay for there phones plus service it is worth a good physical beating to the people who ruined what was a FABULOUS phone when I bought it. I am so sick of dropped calls, texts that wont send, changing wallpaper, continuous activation of My magazine and other changes I never conducted

It’s as if the assholes think they need to run your phone for you.

To read all this schidt you have to do to attempt a remedy? Kiss my ham hocks. I didn’t buy a phone so I could spend all my time fixing it.

    SAMSUNG is a garbage company.

why did it delete almost all of my music and the rest is crap to try to find and play? Really pissed off about this and also all the icons look different and different places on my phone. What a piece of shit update!!!! I think it’s a down date as nothing works, not an update. You need to fix this piece of crap update, so everyone doesn’t have to do all the long drawn out crap to fix something that you think is so good, but is pure piles of crap.My phone is horrible now also, and it was good before. Way to go saying it would make everything better and it sure went in reverse. Back to prehistoric times. Loved my Samsung S5 before, not it’s fault, just the idiots that devised the crappy update. You all should be ashamed of yourselves saying that it’s a step up, I think it’s more like 100 steps back. Give everyone a link to click on to take phone back to settings before this damn update!!!!!!!!!!
