Galaxy S6 Edge Plus vs Galaxy S6: What We Know So Far

Published

on

Rumor has it, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will soon be joined by a new Galaxy phone not called Galaxy Note 5. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, or Galaxy S6 Edge+, has leaked out numerous times and today we want to take a look at what Galaxy S6 buyers and owners need to know as we push towards launch.

In April, Samsung replaced the Galaxy S5 with two flagship smartphones dubbed Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. The Galaxy S6 is a regular model while the Galaxy S6 Edge is a curved version of the Galaxy S6. It comes with a display that wraps down over the right and left edges of the phone.

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge have been positioned as flagships alongside the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge though they’re expected to be joined by two replacements for the Galaxy Note models in the days ahead.

One device is the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, a phone that’s leaked out numerous times this summer. The other is a larger version of the Galaxy S6 Edge that’s currently dubbed Galaxy S6 Edge Plus or Galaxy S6 Edge+. The device is expected to be called Galaxy S6 Edge+ when it hits the market.

While the spotlight has been focused on the Galaxy Note 5, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is shaping up to be an interesting phone in its own right.

With a launch rumored to be just around the corner, we want to take a look at the most important things current and prospective Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus owners need to know about their similarities and differences.

Nothing is confirmed until Samsung makes its announcements on stage but these represent the most credible Galaxy S6 Edge Plus details to date.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Launch Date

Samsung recently sent out media invites for an Unpacked event in New York City on August 13th. The company hasn’t said what it will be announcing there but the company always saves Unpacked events for big smartphone launches.

Not only has the company begun promoting its Galaxy Note line ahead of August 13th, rumors have also pointed to the arrival of three devices: A Galaxy Note 5, a new Gear A smartwatch, and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus.

Samsung also says that “new premium smartphone models” and that it will be launching a new Galaxy S6 model with “a larger screen.”

Unpacked-Note

We don’t know of any other big Samsung launch dates coming up so there’s a very good chance that August 13th will serve as the coming out party for the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus.

If you’re interested in the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4, or really any Samsung device, we recommend waiting for August 13th. Samsung will be live streaming the event and you’ll be able to catch all of the details as they happen live. The event starts at 11AM EST.

Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Release Date

We’ve heard that Samsung will be releasing the Galaxy Note 5 much earlier than usual. Historically, the company’s Galaxy Note 5 release window has stretched from late September to November. So, you can see why a Galaxy Note 5 release in August is a big deal.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge Plus release date will reportedly mirror the Galaxy Note 5’s. The Galaxy S6 Edge release is heavily rumored for August 21st. We’re still not sure where either device will land on August 21st. Samsung’s know for staggering its release dates so there’s a chance that only some regions/carriers will get the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus that day.

Like the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will be available in the United States. We’ve already spotted the AT&T, Sprint and Verizon models cruising through the FCC and there’s a good chance that we’ll see other variants pass through the FCC’s clutches before August 13th.

The fact that the device has already cleared the FCC means that there’s a good chance the U.S. will be among the first regions to get the phone. We typically don’t see FCC filings emerge until launch day or weeks after the announcement.

Galaxy S6 Edge Plus vs. Galaxy S6 Specs (Rumored)

Now for the devices themselves.

For weeks, we’ve seen Galaxy S6 Edge Plus details emerge and they suggest that the device will, on a very basic level, be a larger version of the Galaxy S6 Edge. If you’re not familiar with the Galaxy S6 Edge and now it looks, here’s a photo of it.

To compare, here’s a photo of the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus (on the right) next to the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Note that it does actually resemble a larger version of Samsung’s current flagship phone.

Photos don’t tell us much about the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus specs but rumors do and we’ve seen plenty of Galaxy S6 Edge Plus specs emerge alongside Galaxy Note 5 rumors. None of these specs are final but here’s what we’ve seen emerge thus far. Compare them to the specs found on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

Galaxy S6 & Galaxy S6 Edge

  • 5.1-inch Quad HD display – 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution at 577 PPI.
  • 5.1-inch Galaxy S6 Edge variant with curved display
  • 16MP rear camera / 5MP front-facing camera
  • Exynos 7420 octa-core processor
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 32GB / 64GB / 128GB internal storage
  • 2,550 mAh battery (Galaxy S6) / 2,600 mAh (Galaxy S6 Edge)
  • Android 5.1.1 Lollipop

Galaxy S6 Edge Plus

It’s still not clear how souped up the phone will be compared to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Rumors have been back and forth about the amount of RAM on board though they’ve been adamant about the CPU being the same 7420 SoC that’s found in the current models.

The biggest difference will be the bigger display that’s more in line with the size of the Galaxy Note’s display. The Galaxy Note 5 is expected to feature a 5.7-inch Quad HD display.

Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Price

According to SamMobile, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus price will be 800 euro for the 32GB version of the phone. The Galaxy S6 Edge has been at 850 euro and that’s precisely why the company recently dropped the prices of both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

We’ve started to see the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge receive price cuts in several regions including the United States where T-Mobile has cut the price on both phones. We expect more retailers and carriers to join T-Mobile as the weeks go on.

Galaxy-S6-3 3.37.21 PM

The Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will be more expensive than the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. There’s something else you’ll want to keep in mind though.

AT&T recently bumped its activation fee on two year contracts from $40 to $45. It also recently added a new $15 upgrade fee for those upgrading on AT&T Next plans. These affect the prices of the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus on AT&T. Keep them in mind as we progress towards the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus release date.

Galaxy Note 5 Release (U.S.): 10 Important Details

Samsung Note 5 Launch Date Confirmed

Samsung Note 5 Launch Date Confirmed

If you're thinking about buying a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 in the United States, the first thing you need to know is that the Galaxy Note 5 launch date is all but confirmed for August. As we mentioned, this is much earlier than IFA 2015.

Samsung is reportedly worried about the impact the iPhone could have on the Galaxy Note 5's success so it's launching it a little earlier this year. How early? August 13th early

The company recently sent out invites for an Unpacked launch event for August 13th in New York City. The company hasn't outlined what it will be announcing there but it saves Unpacked events for its biggest launches. And that means that we'll probably see the Galaxy Note 5, and all of its details, arrive there.

With less than two weeks to go, we expect Galaxy Note 5 rumors to continue as Samsung's plans for the phone's release firm up behind the scenes.
