GBM Shortcut: The Ford Escape Hybrid Arrives

Published

on

fordescape Ford just delivered the Escape Hybrid for me to review, and my girls are already planning everything they want me to do with it.   Here is a quick 4-minute look at the car and technology I’ll be testing out for the next week.

By the way, after I shot this video, I plugged in our Zune and I was immediately able to navigate our music library. The SYNC process was very simple. I’ll test this out with my son’s iPod Touch, too. I have yet to open an owners manual. I’ll post that video up tomorrow.

Rob, thanks for the look. It’s nice to see Maggie smiling and happy. The girls are cute.
I have owned a hybrid (Prius) since they came out (tablets are not the only thing I am an early adopter of). Make sure you have plenty of gas in it. When you’re used to watching the needle move on the fuel gauage, and then it doesn’t, You can forget to check.
I am not as impressed with Ford’s overall effort, in that the drive train in aquired from Toyota and they didn’t make any attempt to innovate on the human interface, as Toyota did on the Prius and Yaris. The gauges are all fairly routine (no HUD), and located in the traditional place with the veiw obstructed by the steering wheel. It strikes me the shift would be bumping into whatever you had plugged into the USB or power ports. And it still requires a key, no RFID fob alternate.Go with the Prius, they’re made in Tennessee now.

I have a Prius too, but the interior electronics leave a lot to be desired. Try replacing the head unit – not! I had to buy an after market device to get my iPod working on the screen, and another aftermarket device for my XM connection. All usable from the steering wheel and LCD. I did not go with the $3000 option for a poor implementation of GPS. There is no inverter built in to give 110v and yet the car has electric motors and a huge battery? Love my Prius but wish it looked like a Mustang and wish it had some of the newer tech toys Ford is implementing. And yea Ford, get the keyless option already. I love just walking up to my Prius and the door unlocks because I have the fob in my pocket and then I just push the start button.

Very nice Rob, glad to see you get to review the Escape. Keep us posted on how well the iPod Touch sync’s. Good to see Maggie is doing good.
