Getting Error 3200 When Upgrading to iOS 5? You’re Not Alone

Published

on

Just a short time ago, I told you about the issues I was having with upgrading my iPhone 3GS and my iPad 2 to the latest piece of Apple software, iOS 5. I kept trying and each time, I was greeted with an error called ‘Error 3200’. At first, I figured that it had to be something on my end because I saw a bunch of people talking about how they had just got iOS 5 up and running.

Well, now I know that I am not alone. Error 3200Error 3200 is trending on Twitter right now which means that I, along with tons of other iPhone, iPhone and iPod touch users are receiving this cryptic message. The message appears after Apple’s servers try to verify and activate the installation process.

Apple’s knowledge base is no help error 3200 apparently doesn’t exist, but Jay Freeman aka Saurik is. In a tweet, the creator of Cydia explains that Apple’s servers are getting hammered with traffic and that the Error 3200 is a direct cause of that:

To anyone getting “An internal error occurred.” (3200) while installing iOS 5.0, Apple’s servers are swamped, and failing half the requests.

What’s the remedy? Your best bet is to wait. Or you can drive yourself to the brink of insanity by attempting to install over and over again. I’ve actually seen a few people say they got it to work after trying to install iOS 5 dozens of times.

Either way, it’s not an issue with your device and you should be able to get iOS 5 once things die down.

Update: You can fix this by manually updating according to GDGT. It didn’t work for everyone I talked to but it worked for most.

Thanks!  The irony is that I only bought the Ipad 2 after reading about IOS  5, which has a couple features I greatly desire.  I almost joined the developer program to get it in beta earlier, and now…..aarghh.

I have a 3GS and originally I received an error 17??.  After rebooting my PC, restarting my phone, it changed to an error 3200.  Now I don’t get that error, I just get a message that the iphone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable.  Please try again later.  Have tried about a dozen times so far.
Annoyingly, I can’t restore the backup to a previous state with iOS4.  I have a dead phone (no phone) until I can connect.  That leaves me without a work phone / e-mail / SMS for tomorrow and who knows how long.
Stupidly, I assumed that ‘restore’ meant that I could select a previous version from a backup with a date etc.
iTunes has to be updated to iTunes 10.5 before you can update and perhaps that process has removed all my restore options.  When I select the iPhone device in iTunes, I have only the summary tab with just one button, showing ‘Restore’.  My advice is to not bother doing this upgrade if you will be relying on having a phone the same day or next day for anything important like work.  Chances are that you will only see this post though, when you’ve got no working phone!

Unplug you phone, Close iTunes, Restart your computer. Plug back in your iDevice, iTunes will identify there is a new update for it, click update and it should go through. Worked for me.

You probably have the *.ipsw file on your harddrive (under (this is from memory) C:Users[yourusername]AppDataRoamingApple Computer(then something about software updates)). In iTunes Shift+Click on the Restore button and pick that file. This skips the verification step which was failing.

Note that the name of the file has a version number that is off by 1 for iPhones, compared to what you expect. What I mean is that I have a iPhone 4 and the filename had 3,1.5.0…. in the name instead of 4,0.5.0…
