Going Mobile in India

Published

on

I landed in Mumbai last night for my brother-in-law’s wedding and will be in India for a couple of weeks. Getting online was quite an ordeal, but I was finally able to get online with a Reliance 3G modem tonight. I’ve got quite a few stories to tell about the journey over here and how I’m staying connected. I brought quite a few gadgets along for the trip that I plan on sharing here on GBM and on Notebooks.com. I’m going to spend a lot of time shooting and editing photos. I apologize in advance if I flood the front page of GBM with stories related to my trip, but I have a backlog after being offline for almost two days.

Xavier, if you’ve not already, Get a Perpaid SIM for your mobile as well, as the Calling, charges even back to the US are Stupid Cheap (Rs.6 /US$0.10 minute and no incoming charges).

Also, Airtel, and I think Vodafone as well also offer Data on prepaid, though it is usually limited EDGE or GPRS, but at approximately Rs. 15-20 (US$0.40) a Day for unlimited usage its a great way to keep online all day and everywhere in the country. I did that the last time I was in India, and was able to get online almost everywhere, though at a pretty slow speed.

If you need more speed or bandwidth, it might be worth going to a Reliance center and checking if they’ll let you plug you laptop in. They usually have a Ton of Bandwidth, and have pretty reasonable rates. Or Just look for a TATA Indicom Wireless hotspot and Buy a few days pass, though if you have Boingo, I believe they are a included in the global unlimited plan.

@BBusyB Thanks for the info on the prepaid phones. My wife’s uncle gave me a prepaid SIM card for my Blackberry, but it doesn’t have a data plan so I’ll need to fix that situation asap.

I’ve been using a USB modem from Reliance and I’m pretty happy with it so far.
