Google Nexus 7 Release Date In Limbo

Published

on

While we had thought that the Google Nexus 7 might launch tomorrow, July 12th, it appears that that date may not be the Nexus 7 release date after all.

Yesterday, an internal document from Office Depot emerged which indicated that the Nexus 7 might launch tomorrow, at least at Office Depot.

However, a new document that has surfaced at Droid-Life, again from Office Depot, indicates that the retailer has delayed the device’s launch for unknown reasons.

The Google Nexus 7 release date remains unclear.

Read: Why I Pre-Ordered a Google Nexus 7 Tablet.

Stores that have received shipments of the device are not supposed to display or sell the device until further notice which leaves the Nexus 7 release date in the shadows once again.

It’s still possible that it could launch elsewhere tomorrow, and just not at Office Depot, but it would be strange to see the retailer launch after the official launch date, especially if devices are already trickling in.

There is no word as to why Office Depot won’t be sticking to its original Nexus 7 launch plans and we doubt the retailer, or Google, reveals why the “delay” occurred.

In any event, the Nexus 7 release date appears to be close as Google’s own store lists the device as shipping out in 1-2 weeks, a sign that a launch is imminent.

Google has yet to provide consumers with a specific release date but it has said that the device would hit shelves with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board in the middle of the month which means it still has a few days to make good on its promise.

Keep an eye out for an official release date soon.

The Nexus 7 features a 7-inch display that will feature 1280×800 resolution. It will feature a Tegra 3 quad-core processor from NVIDIA. It also features a front-facing camera for video chatting purposes, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth support, and up to 9 hours of HD video.

When it goes on sale, the Nexus 7 will be available in two variants including a 8GB Nexus 7 for $199 and a larger 16GB Nexus 7 for $249.

It also has a hidden feature in that it has support for a magnetic smart cover, something that Google did not unveil at Google I/O or in the device’s listed specs.

It’s unclear if Google’s Nexus 7 cases will support the hidden feature.

The “Delay” is simply because these tablets are already at retail shops. But people like me, who purchased from the play store haven’t even gotten any confirmation.

They want to make sure the play store people get the tablet first. So that we are not pissed off that we payed an insane amount for shipping, when you can get free shipping from the retailers, or just pick it up in store and just pay tax.

And that is why my gamestop has the Nexus 7 in the back room just waiting. And we can’t do anything about it.

If his store didn’t receive any it’s because he’s A: Not a tablet store yet, and B: Didn’t get an pre-orders on the tablet.

Allison they are indeed sitting in the back office at GameStop. But I agree with both of you. 13.99 isn’t bad for shipping. But when you compare free shipping to GameStop it’s a rip off. Everything Sper said is true. I’ve read the email from google myself. They ate waiting for the people who ordered from google to get theirs first.

I hope this is the case because, like you, I purchased from the PLAY store and they charged my credit card immediately. Which, to my understanding, is against the Federal Trade Commission rules – no billing until shipped (unless it’s a deposit, which it was not). So, I’m expecting mine to arrive tomorrow if I paid for two-day shipping and they billed me yesterday. We’ll see…..

      Ordered one on 6/28.
Received a single confirmation in email, along with the note that card would not be billed until shipment. My card has not been charged as of today, and the order does not contain any updates beyond being received.

I ordered mine from the PLAY store last night 7/11. They billed me today. I even called Google to see if they had shipped it and they said that they did’t know when it would be shipped. The rep said that it could be as soon as mid-month so I should just hold tight. He even went as far as to say that he had pre-ordered his as well and he didn’t even know when he would get his.

@Kendra, do you get email confirmation and/or something in order status?
I placed an order, I saw Google charged $1 on my credit card, probably for verification, but I don’t get any other confirmation, I don’t see it in order status of my google play account. I don’t even know if the transaction went through, and tried to contact customer service, no response.

I preordered one on the 6th. Google charged my account but did not say anything about when it would ship. I checked my account again this morning (7/12) and the charge had been taken off. The order status on my Google account only notes that the order was received.

Same as me, the charge on my credit card is gone. But the Google Wallet order still there… what is really happening???

Preordered mine here somewhere in northern socal. My connection does confirm they have been in store since the afternoon of 07/11. But they’re trying to get in contact with Google to see when they can begin distribution. Staples says they’ll ship to your house beginning 07/12- 07/17. So I expect them to start releasing the preorders then. But they (gamestop) did say they were not going to release them till early august. Who knows. Maybe Google is keeping it all hush to build excitement. Whatever , mine is paid for and my buddies is the manager so I’m good. Good luck guys.

Sams club says 3-8 days shiping, and will start shipping on the 07/17. Staples says they’ll start shipping tomorrow same basic shipping time. Based on that staples preordersshould be received at earliest on 07/15, Sams club 07/20. I think I read somewhere that Costco will start selling them in their wharehouses starting on 07/12 or 07/13. I think if other stores are gonna start shipping, they should start releasing the preorders, especially at gamestop. Where it is ” Power to the Players”. Will update as soon as Google responds to my buddies gamestop.

Basically I’m seeing that the Google store preorders haven’t been shipped yet. Google doesn’t want to piss off their customers who paid 13 extra bucks to get it shipped. If I can buy it at a store when its in stock . HE HE HE.Google should of sent their PLAY preorders out early. Because ur still pissimg people off by holding back their units based on their crappy shipping infrastructure. Maybe they didn’t realize people who bought the nexus 7 at retailers will also be buying stuff at their PLAY store, so either way you are pissing off their PLAY customers. Thoes of us who put out extra effort to physically go to the store should be given our tablets. They should treat it like game midnight release events…… preorders ship at midnight, then let us buy the unit or pick up the preorders the following morning in store. Seems fair to me. If ur lazy u will wait for shipping, everyone else who didn’t get it shipped to their house shouldn’t have to wait for shipping. That’s bs.

Uh, if you place a preorder, even if it is online, you should get it before people who buy one at the store. Why? Guaranteed income. A preorder is a bird in the hand, so to speak, so they should be catering more to these people. Preordering online isn’t lazy, it just guarantees that you get one in case of stock shortages and you don’t have to deal with a-holes lining up at the stores at midnight. Its bs that you think a company should treat the same as preorders because you “might” go to the store on release and buy one.

I agree , I did indeed preorder mine on the 6th . Traded on 170.00 worth of ps2 hardware and ps3 games. Think I had to pay 120.00 actual cash to pay off my preorder . So yes I do agree about your preorder statement. I was simply stating that a preorder is a preorder, whether its from gamestop or google. So if google wants to ship preorders before everyone else gets one , I should be able to get my gamestop preorder the same time. It’s a miscalculation by Google. It should be available one blanket date, preorders that is.

Google did not charge anyone’s credit card. They simply authorized that amount which went away in 5 days or so depending on your bank’s policy when the actual charge did not come in for processing. This gives them higher confidence the charge will go through when they do post it upon shipment, even though it is not guaranteed since the auth. code they got the day you ordered is no longer valid. Hard to say if they will re-authorize just prior to shipping or just post the charge. I wish they would so I could see the auth on my bank’s website near real-time giving indication it is likely on the way.

Just a comment to anyone who thinks $13.95 for second day air shipment is outrageous, they must not have shipped anything lately. Both FedEX and UPS websites quote $29.51 for a 2 lb. next-day air package

    • Patti

      07/13/2012 at 4:58 am

Oh come on! Shipping at $13.95 hurts a bit when you are used to free shipping from Amazon. That said, I preordered my Nexus 7 on June 27, got a confirmation email and nothing since. You’d think Google would at least update the Wallet account and give a tenative shipping date. When I ordered, it was 2 to 3 weeks so it’s getting close.

If they’re in stores before my pre order is delivered to my home, I will simply buy one in the store. Then whenever UPS puts the note on my door attempting to deliver, I will tell them to return it to Google.

That way I get the tablet quicker and save the shipping charge. Win. Win. For me.

Probably not gonna find one in.store. they seen sold out everywhere.

    07/12/2012 at 12:32 pm

That’s next day. For second day air, UPS quotes around $17 for a Nexus 7 sized package. That $17 is for one package. They’ll give me a big discount if I ship a few hundred thousand packages at a time.

A preorder is a preorder no matter where it is from. If Google ships their preorders today and staples is shipping today with a delivery date no earlier than tomorrow. Then why shouldn’t gamestop start distributing preorders today or tomorrow. As to response from ” shut up” above, I simply said and maybe u misunderstood but if a preorder is ordered during the same time as another preorder. One shipping for an extended time shouldn’t affect the distribution of other preorders already at the store. There should be a.blanket release date, and google should take.the.blame for.not.shipping.their.preorders.out.early.enough.to.get.them.in.the.hands.of.their.customers.before.the.blanket.retail.release.date. Like I said a preorder is a preorder regardless of retailer.

Ricky W. Um, yes the did charge my card and it cleared. I have $227.37 less in my bank account as of yesterday. My order just says that google received my order, the order number, the amount charged. The email from google for the order confirmation says the same thing. There is no ship date. I would be EXTREMELY upset if people could just go into the store and buy it when I pre-ordered it and am out the money until they decide to ship it. Had I known that, I might have 1. just gone to a local retailer and purchased it or 2. not purchased it until the new Kindle Fire comes out and compared the two. Pre-ordering is guaranteed income for businesses and guaranteed priority receipt for the buyers. But not this time.

    07/12/2012 at 6:13 pm

@YD – it’s not a $1 charge, it’s $227.37 and did not “get taken off 5 days later”, it’s still gone out of my account and no word from google stating anything at all about what’s going on. This is the first time I’ve used google wallet, other than buying $1.00 apps from the PLAY store. I don’t think I’ll be using google wallet again. Maybe I’m spoiled by Amazon’s quick service and only having to pay $4 for overnight shipping or nothing for 2 day, constantly being updated on my order status and the ability to check the shipping status. I’m surprised a company like google isn’t doing a better job with this.

Pre Ordered two here in UK and first time ever using Google Play Store. Me and better half looking forward to receiving them, but we wont pre-order anything again via Google. Jeeezz, their customer care team approach is appauling, according to care advisor we spoke to – ours is shipping now, oh no sorry its not, and then it is?!?… no update emails, no tracking info. Google – hope your Nexus 7 better than your customer care lol Google just pay advisors to answer the phone and follow a script that goes along the lines of “I don’t know” and “no we can’t cancel your pre-order so you can go and buy it down the high street”… what?? I “can’t” cancel an order which has not shipped???
Compete with Apple?? Used/bought/pre-ordered via Apple many years, yup you pay premium, but the customer care is second to none in my book..
