GTA 5 on PS4 and Xbox One: Rockstar Playing it By Ear

Published

GTA 5 on PS4 and Xbox One remains a question many gamers want answered, and in a recent interview Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies talks briefly about the future of GTA 5.

In a long and revealing interview about Grand Theft Auto Online, the GTA 5 multiplayer component that launches on October 1st, Benzies addresses two questions about the larger role of GTA Online, though he doesn’t go as far to announce GTA 5 on PS4 or GTA 5 for Xbox One, he doesn’t rule them out and leaves room for some hope.

The details come from an interview with Computer And Videogames, which delivers a lot of good new information about the GTA 5 Online multiplayer component.

Specifically, they ask what will happen to this dynamic and ever-growing world when gamers shift to the Xbox One and PS4 in November and in the months after.

Right now the in-game demos, like the video below show the GTA 5 world on a PS3, but according to Rockstar there is no major benefit on the PS3 or the Xbox 360.

Obviously we’ve seen the game running on current gen systems, but in three months we’ll be in a situation where next gen consoles will be arriving. How do you plan to develop GTA Online as the audience migrates over the next year or so?

We already have plans for what the next world holds in terms of missions, new content, clothes, apartments, for the next while. But we really want to see what people are playing, and we’re putting a lot of effort into the back end, so we can keep an eye on exactly how long people are spending in deathmatches, races, and all the other modes – just to see what they’re doing. And if we see any peaks anywhere, then we know where to concentrate our efforts. There’s not a lot of data out there for us. There’s very few games like GTA Online – so we’ll play it by ear and see what the consumers want.

This is a positive note, from Rockstar, as the company isn’t coming out and saying there will be no GTA 5 on Xbox One and PS4. If anything it sounds like the company is waiting to see what gamers are playing and doing in the world before announcing any major plans.

If Rockstar is planning GTA 5 on PS4, it’s possible someone in the company is already experimenting or working on it. The big problem is that the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as the PS3 and PS4 are different enough that neither can play a previous generation game. For a more detailed version of why you can’t play GTA 5 for the PS3 on a PS4, read this article that explores backwards compatibility and emulation.

Rockstar is working on a system that will keep your online identity from GTA 5 available across platforms and consoles, which is good news for gamers looking to upgrade to a PS4 or Xbox One.

Combine this with Rockstar’s plans to make Grand Theft Auto Online a growing and dynamic world with new places and there’s hope for more. Benzies said, “The only limitation is the size of the disc and how much memory we’ve got. We could, if we wanted, simulate the entire world, different countries, whatever.”

Gamers eagerly await news of GTA 5 on PS4 or Xbox 360.

Gamers eagerly await news of GTA 5 on PS4 or Xbox 360.

In a followup CVG asks, if new consoles, like the Xbox One and PS4 will help with this, only to get a rebuff from Benzies who states,

“We’ll get the current gen version out first and see what happens in the future.”

Even though Rockstar refuses to talk about GTA 5 on PS4 or Xbox One, the large scale and long term outlook for Grand Theft Auto Online is a good sign. Given the timing of the release of this and many other games, current console owners will likely keep an Xbox 360 or PS3 around to play games like Grand Theft Auto 5 and others for a while, but eventually a new console takes over the entertainment center for the average consumer, and at that point Rockstar will likely want to have GTA Online for PS4 and Xbox One available, and with that could come GTA 5 on PS4 and Xbox One.

Rockstar would be insane not to port to the next gen. Considering how little effort it would take – it just makes sense!!

“Little effort”? You obviously have no idea what you are talking about, or are trying to be funny…

Rockstar please bring this to next gen!!!! No matter how awesome gta5 will be, there will be some limitations on current gen systems. I would gladly buy the game again if it meant I could play an even slightly better next gen version. Even if its just slightly improved graphics n framerates. Its like san andreas….great game but I could not play it now coz the graphics are just too obsolete. Gta5 on next gen would seriously extend its replay value!

Already cancelled my preorder of gta5 for ps3, not any sense in spending 65 dollars on a ps3 version playing it for about a month and then getting my ps4 and never getting on the ps3 again, waist of money. I will wait until it is released for the ps4.

Efff that. Gta 5 is how I’m gonna keep my anxiety down while waiting for my ps4.

That’s funny, I did the exact opposite, I canceled my amazon pre-order for PS4 since GTA5 will keep me occupied for so long. By the time I’m ready for the PS4, it will probably have better hardware for less cost.

San Andreas was not released on the next gen what makes you think gta 5 would be different? Thanks for looking out for people who can’t afford a next gen system when it launches.. Imagine if it was a next gen exclusive…..

Well San Andreas release date : October 26, 2004
      PS3 release date : November 11, 2006,
      Xbox 360 release date : November 22, 2005

Time gap between San Andreas and XBOX360/PS3??
      Ans: Whole 1 year
Time gap between GTA5 and PS4/XBOX One??
      Ans: 2-3 months……..

Son,now u can see the time difference between the release dates (assuming u r not a retard who wants to argue till the ends of the earth).
And why the hell would ppl buy a previous gen console just to play this game??
No doubt gta 5 will be awesome but some ppl really care that much cause there will be other games to play which are next gen friendly.
Also obviously ppl who cant afford the new console would sell their previous console for the next gen and the game would not even be played for more than 2-3 months lawl.
Now why would ppl buy this game on the first place?? To go in a loss??ppl would rather buy better gen console and buy the games compatible with it.
If ppl can afford good android phones and Iphones then ppl would definately be able to afford these new consoles lol……

I wasn’t saying people will never have a ps4 or the new x box, I clearly said when it launches… I didnt have an android when it first came out, I really dont see why you replied with so much detail when my point was, I want gta 5 now and dont want to wait till next year when a ps4 is in my budget. Maybe you’re rich or just have no responsibilities! the San Andreas version for ps3 was the ps2 version! Graphics were not better and noo benefit of playing on ps3..
Son, now you know that reading is fundamental, everyone doesn’t go out and buy next gen systems when they launch, gta 5 will be old news next year when I get ps4! Do you understand now… Son… Lol

Think about it, They went to the max on making gta4 to the point of having no money until the game dropped. And when it did it was huge huge huge. It made a killing on what it could show. Although they put it all to the graphics as we could all see they lacked in overall gameplay. You could only have so much money before it felt worthless. Point being they have been working a lot on this game since the last. Im sure their bank is sitting low right now and they probably dont have the money to produce any next gen systems right now. Plus if everyone knew they were coming out on next gens they would just wait. Rockstar has already made the 360 games and they need to get as many sold as possible without the world knowing they will be dropping the next gens to. Gotta get the money. Think about it lol they make games where that is the objective get to the scrilla hahaha . Hold your horses guys, it will come out for next gens just look at it from their perspective and do a lil bit of history looking up about the last game. They got to a point where they had to kinda start making shit up half way through the last game because they were running low on money. They managed to kill it tho still . So congrats to rockstar north. Bad ass game. Have fun guys
