Halo: The Master Chief Collection Release Problem Solved

Published

on

Microsoft and 343 Industries, the company in charge of delivering Halo: The Master Chief Collection to waiting Xbox One users across the world beginning November 11th, has adverted what could have been a very big crisis for release day buyers. That Halo: The Master Chief Collection release date patch that two companies warned users about won’t be nearly disruptive as first believed.

Earlier today, 343 Industries revealed that when Halo: The Master Chief Collection buyers get the game home next week they’ll need to download a 15GB patch. Certainly, not having to download a software update for the game at all would have been the most ideal, but users are saving 5GB of downloads. For those on metered internet plans that’s big savings. For everyone else who isn’t it that means they’ll be able to play the game a lot faster.

In revealing the smaller patch, 343 Industries and Microsoft also revealed that those who’ve already pre-ordered digital copies of Halo: The Master Chief Collection can download the update beginning today. What that means is that users won’t have to fuss with downloading the update on Halo: The Master Chief Collection release night. Microsoft didn’t originally share that information, leading some to think that even though they’d pre-ordered and downloaded the game to their Xbox One, they’d need to do another update before they could play on November 11th.

That Microsoft shrunk the download and is now making the release update available to Halo: The Master Chief Collection buyers is great on a few levels.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is a pretty robust game. The base title itself was already going to take up roughly 45GB of storage space. The Xbox One comes with 500GB of storage space, but it’s used for games, apps and the operating system on the Xbox One itself. With the original update size, digital buyers were looking at a whopping 65GB of storage space going towards just Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Second, it helps build trust with buying digital games. Convincing Xbox One Owners to purchase Halo: The Master Chief Collection — or any game — digitally is pretty hard. Those who do are able to switch to that game whenever they feel like it and potentially share that game with family and friends using Xbox Live Gold Home. That being said, they’re also giving up any chance of loaning that game to a friend the way they used to. Also, digital games can’t be resold to places like GameStop and Wal-Mart. Letting players patch their games early is another big perk that adds to the digital games puzzle.

With the day one update for Halo: The Master Chief Collection now going out to those who’ve pre-ordered, the only thing left is for users to sit and wait. The game is expected to be the highlight of the Xbox One holiday line-up. It’s one of the exclusive titles Microsoft is hoping will lure Xbox 360 users into purchasing an Xbox One instead of a PS4.

For $60 Halo: The Master Chief Collection buyers are getting an awful lot of game. First there’s the Halo 2 Anniversary. It’s included in the collection, and has remastered music, cut scenes and a graphics engine that lets players switch between the old Halo 2 graphics from the original Xbox and HD graphics for the Xbox One. Halo: Combat Evolved will also let users do this.

Halo 3 and Halo 4 are both included in Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Campaign and multiplayer elements of each game are included. Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be the only way Xbox One owners are able to participate in the Halo 5: The Guardians beta when it arrives in December too.
