Has T-Mobile Managed to Make the G2x Situation Worse?

Published

on

I love smartphones, I really do and I apologize if a lot of my posts lately are focusing on the negatives of them but it’s truly hard to sit here and watch people pour tons of money into smartphones that don’t work as advertised. Verizon’s HTC ThunderBolt gets the most press but there is another phone that is causing major problems for its owners, a device called the LG G2x.

LG G2x

You see, the G2x is bogged down by problems that are as bad if not worse than the issues that ThunderBolt owners are dealing with. And while Verizon continues to market and sell the phone while T-Mobile has stopped selling the G2x completely and retailers like Amazon are currently out of stock. Nice of T-Mobile to save unwitting customers from buying a phone that shouldn’t have even been sold in the first place. Current G2x owners have had no such luck.

After signing a contract and plunking down money for a device that they thought was going to be fantastic experience – dual-core processor, 4G speeds – the LG G2x is currently suffering from a multitude of issues including reboots, backlight bleeding and overheating. T-Mobile admitted that the G2x had problems and promised to get a fix out for the device.

That was about a month ago and now, somehow someway, things have gotten worse.

According to Android Community, T-Mobile is refusing to exchange the G2x for the issues that I just mentioned. The rebooting, the overheating, the backlight bleeding, the last of which can’t be fixed with software. This policy apparently will be in place Android 2.3 Gingerbread arrives. Unfortunately, we have no idea when that software is rolling out so G2x owners are left with a device that is essentially as good as a paper weight.

T-Mobile certainly has a lot of explaining to do especially because it stated that the G2x’s issues were because of inventory problems, an excuse that is almost laughable at this point.  Something to think twice about when deciding between a T-Mobile smartphone and one on another carrier, that’s for sure.

T-Mobile has not responded to a request for comment at this time.

My G2X has been mostly useable, though my wife has exchanged hers twice and I exchanged mine once.  We thought we were buying top of the line phones, but they still reboot about once per day.  I guess I’m used to getting taken though, since our previous phones were Motorola CLIQs.

I absolutely love my g2x! However, the known kinks are somewhat annoying. Wondering why you’re babysitter never texted you back only to realize your phone powered itself off is very nerve racking to say the least. It’s an awesome phone, but T-Mobile and LG are going to have thousands of angry customers if they don’t do something ASAP. This phone is the only reason I decided to stay with T-Mobile and their shitty service. Ugh.. should have followed my instincts!!!

SO YOU TELL ME WHO ENDED UP ON TOP , SURE WASNT ME.. T MOBILE SCREWED ME W NO K.Y… ( I DID IT SO MY HUSBAND COULD GET A NEW PHONE) … OTHER THAN PAYING THE FULL 500.00 FOR THE PHONE … SORRY I DID SO

cyanogenmod7 is out in release candidate form for the cliq xt..flashed it the other day, difference was like night and day.  was running another 2.1 rom based on the cliq’s firmware (deblurred, i think), which was decent as well.  it’s just remarkable to me that the cm7 guys can make this rom work across so many devices, while the actual device manufacturers can’t..

I’ve had my G2x since 5/2 and I have had absolutely 0 problems or even any concerns about it. If someone were to ask me I’d say it is one of the best phones EVER! I just WANT Gingerbread ASAP.

      Take care,

I felt like i was the only one in the world that got a g2x problem free. It has gotten to the point where (as a mobile sales rep) People are asking me what phone I have and are impressed by the specs I detail to them about the phone. I bought the phone at launch and can honestly say that if it’s working cleanly, it is easily the best phone out there right now. A gingerbread update would only solidify that for me.

Don’t do the Gingerbread update.  If your phone is working like a champ, don’t do the upgrade.

Finally!!! I am so happy I am not the ony person problem free.  I got the G2X for me and my boyfriend and we have not had any problems with it.  I mean, I think it has froze once, but that is about it.  I love love love this phone, and would never give it up.

G2X since launch date and not a problem one. Battery life has since gotten much better after a few full run downs and not a reboot one that I’m aware of. T-Mobile is hands down the best carrier I’ve ever experienced and I’ve been thru most all major carriers. Its too bad those who are having the issues haven’t gotten to experience the awesomeness this phone has provided me. Waiting for GB is making me impatient but that’s ok. I’m 32 yrs old and have waited much longer for other things in life. Lol. I’m a power user when it comes to cell phones and although I miss my htc nexus one, the g2x has easily fulfilled its place. That’s something a Samsung phone could never do IMO. I wish all of u best of luck and hope ur g2x’s make a speedy recovery. Meanwhile ill keep on recommending this phone to my fellow employees.

No problems here either. I did have to replace the first one, but that was because of a bad root and a bad ROM. I am very happy with the G2x. I held mine up to a co-worker’s iPhone 4, and the screen was brighter, sharper, and more vibrant, despite the “retina” display on the iPhone. I never even noticed the screen bleed issue until I read about it. I’m running the latest CM7 nightly, and loving my new phone!

If gingerbread and an LG fix don’t come soon I’ll be raising hell with T-Mobile. This phone was such a promising piece of tech that I was excited to walk out if the store with one within a week if it going on sale. Unfortunately I’ve already traded in one handset and I wolff like to trade in it’s replacement our get a Sensation. Can’t believe LG/T-Mobile are shafting customers like this and refuse to grow a pair and admit it’s a bust and even give us a real release date on when to expect paperweights to become phones again. I’ve been tempted to just use an old crappy slide phone just because it died what it’s supposed to!

Good luck, I’m a 10 year customer of T-Mobile and all they’ll do for me is send me another LG G2X.  The first replacement phone was a POS.  I Phone 5 is looking pretty good right now.

I just found out after calling t mobile 5 times a day for a week complaining about my G2X that the exchanges are going through LG and LG isnt taking any exchanges for the “known Issues”. So what you have to do is say there is another issue with the phone outside of the known issue even if there isnt. When they ask if there are 3rd party apps tell them no. Say you have done a factory reset on it multiple times and it does not resolve the issue. Bad news is you have to do this 3 times and on the 4th they will allow you to switch it out for a different phone. I would recommend first calling and adding the insurance coverage for warranty and accidental damage then call back and request an exchange due to no signal, or the phone shutting down every time it falls asleep. Also mention that it has the random restarts but this is not the issue you are complaining about. The 3 exchanges have to be through the warranty process. Because my first exchange was with 14 days and i did it through the retail store it did not count and i had to do 4 exchanges before they gave me a different model phone. They will try to swap you out with a My touch4G which obviously is not comparable phone prior to 3 exchanges. Don’t take it. Keep exchanging until they offer you something better like the HTC Sensation.

To be honest I don’ t know if this is rare or not, but the day I got my G2X I rooted, I was about to install the early leaked gingerbread rom, but I decided to try and hold out for the official, during the time it was rooted, I experienced the freezing, reboots, overheating alot. So I decided to start fresh unroot and go back to stock following the unlocker tutorial, that was last friday and I have not had one issue at all for some reason battery life is better then ever, no freezing, no reboots and on stock rom. I never did have any backlight leaking though maybe this is strange but I like it better on stock now.

Can I withhold payment on my phone?  I purchased it via the installment plan and only put down $150.00.  I still owe $300.00, but if T-Mobile won’t address the phone’s less than sound performance, I feel I am entitled to a new phone or I should be able to return it for a refund.  What do you think?

This type of corporate irresponsibility is unacceptable. Especially on Verizon’s part for continuing to sell the Thunderbolt. If people are held to a two year contract then they should be provide a device or comparable device that works properly for that period. Otherwise they need to be held accountable by class action lawsuits.

I had a lot of random reboots at beginning. After doing a factory reset and delete all applications i dont use , my phone runs smoothly and dont have reboots of freezing states. This phone is super fast and have a lot of capabilities. Just go ahead and unistall applications you dont use  and you will notice the change.

I bought one of the G2X on Saturday June 30, had all the problems mentioned above. I called customer care and they told me to exchange it, by the time I got to the store today to do it, July 7th, they informed me that all the G2X’s were being shipped back that Tmobile has recalled all of them from stores. I was allowed to switch the the HTC Sensation with no issues and recieved a $50 refund. I asked what they where going to do for the people that were ourside 14day buyers remorse and they said the corporate had not told them yet.

I pre-ordered the G2X and it arrived 1 day prior to the official in-store release. From the very start, I was plagued by random reboots and shut downs. Upon contacting T-mobile, I was told that a software update would be pushed out over the air which would fix the glitches. Thus I waited beyond the 14 day “buyer’s remorse” window in which I could have returned the device. I continued to have issues several times a day and could no longer wait around for the software update, so I spent countless hours speak with various T-Mobile departments (Customer Service, Tech Support, Customer Loyalty, etc.). In hindsight it I find it shameful that depending who I spoke with withing the various departments I was told different stories about what was going on with the device, often times contradicting each other. The mis-information within the company that was being disseminated to customers is not something I wouldn’t have expected from T-mobile. They’ve always have superb customer service in my opinion.

When I was told that after going through 3 manufacturer warranty replacements, I would qualify for a different, comparable phone. Once I got to the point of qualifying for a different phone I was told that the MyTouch 4G was my only option. I thought they were joking, but they were serious. Upon escalating my call to a supervisor, they informed me that T-mobile reserves the right to determine how it defines “comparable”. I advised that the Sensation 4G is clearly their only rational alternative to the G2X in terms of features, specs, and price-point. I escalated the call again and they stood their ground and stated that if I didn’t want the MyTouch, I would need to keep the G2X.

This didn’t sit well with me and it seemed unjust. The sold me a defective product and refused to rectify their mistake. Even if it was LGs who was responsible for rushing the phone to market before it was ready, T-mobile is the point-of-sale and who I bought the phone from. The following day I contacted T-mobile’s Corporate Office and left a voice message. I was contacted by someone who basically said the same thing as the Supervisors in Loyalty. I was stuck with the G2X..

The key to getting the Sensation 4G as a replacement device right now is to ask them if they would offer this as a “comparable” replacement if you the customer pay the difference in the price of the two phones. Coincidence that the G2X is supposedly by T-Mobile’s definition an inferior device to the Sensation 4G but costs $50 more? Haha. I offered to lay the difference and they agreed. Note: They at no point mentioned this as an option.. seems like the customer must initiate this compromise.

In the end, I love the Sensation 4G! Gingerbread is impressive and the phone actually has an LED Indicator Light which I still can’t believe the G2X lacks. The Sensation also ships with an 8GB SD Card. For an additional $50, it’s well worth it even just for peace of mind.

Too bad you had to go through that. This phone should have arrived with Gingerbread from the start. I am having many of the problems reported such as the backlight leakage, random reboots, and software issues. After reading what folks are going through to get compensated, I have decided to let it go and assume T-Mobile and LG either will not update this device and/or update it much later than the “very soon” originally promised. Either way, T-Mobile’s past history with updating Android phones (regardless if they’re stock or not), seems to be tainiting the image of the G2X. Oh well. Onward ho to Sprint/Nextel for either the Motorola Photon 4G or Samsung Within!

my phone did the reboot after i did an update..i reset to factory settings and then all was fine..love my g2x ..i believe most of the problems will be fixed with gingerbread update..i flashed cyanmod and it is fantastic but not for everyday until everything functions..so for now i will stick with stock..hopefully gingerbread will be out soon : )

I’ve been with T-Mobile for 7 years and they really dissapointed me with all the problems on the g2x and than refusing to give ne a new phone for it I even offered to pay 2year+mail in rebate cost I’m not paying 600$ for another phone that might ultimately do the same thing g2x did. T-Mobile you are about to lose 7 contracts just cause u didn’t treat one customer the right way. A holes. LG also has a civil lawsuit coming their way lookkit up its already in the works.

I’ve had my g2x since the beginning of May. No serious probs. I haven 3 email accts and can’t update signature on the 2 non-gmail accts. That is annoying. Occasional freezing that I attribute to third party apps. Now I only download from the market. Installed gingerbread yesterday. Love it battery life increased. I can have different signatures for each email account.

would you recommend a g2x once it is running on gingerbread? or would another phone be a better choice?
